BMW has released details on two models that will replace the BMW R nineT: the BMW R 12 nineT and the new cruiser-styled R 12. The “12” in the names of these two models comes from their 1,170cc boxer Twin, and both bikes feature a new frame, new technology, and other updates.

The R 12 nineT “classic roadster” carries on in the tradition of the R nineT with suitability for urban riding and a dynamic ride, while the R 12 features some different components and ergonomics designed for comfortable cruising.

The two new models are powered by an air/oil-cooled 1,170cc flat-opposed Twin with DOHC, the same engine found in the R nineT. In the R 12 nineT, BMW claims 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and 85 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. For the R 12, it claims 95 hp at 6,5000 rpm and 81 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm. The engine redliens at 8,500 rpm.

Different from the R nineT, the 2024 R 12 models get a new airbox that is now integrated under the seat. Also new is the twin pipe exhaust system. The two rear mufflers on the left-hand side feature a reverse-cone cap design. On the R 12 nineT, the front muffler is chrome-plated, and the rear muffler is electro-polished. On the R 12, the front muffler is electro-polished while the rear muffler has a brushed finish.

Another big update from the previous R nineT is the new one-piece trellis steel main frame to replace the previous two-piece frame. BMW claims that this new frame weighs less and gives the R 12 models a cleaner look.

Both models feature cast light-alloy wheels, with 17-inch front and rear wheels on the R 12 nineT and 19-inch front with 16-inch rear wheels on the R 12. Both bikes also get dual 310mm brake discs up front with radially mounted 4-piston monoblock calipers and a single 265mm disc in the rear with a 2-piston caliper, and BMW Motorrad ABS Pro comes standard.

The R 12 nineT has a wheelbase of 59.5 inches, a rake of 27.7 degrees, a trail of 4.4 inches, and a seat height of 31.3 inches. The R 12 features a wheelbase of 59.8 inches, a rake of 29.3 degrees, a trail of 5.2 inches, and a lower seat height of 29.7 inches.

Both new models also feature a new 45mm inverted telescopic fork, which is fully adjustable on the R 12 nineT. Rear suspension is provided by a Paralever swingarm with a linked shock with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Suspension travel front and rear is 4.7 inches on the R 12 nineT and 3.5 inches on the R 12.

These two new models also come equipped with plenty of tech and electronic rider aids. The R 12 nineT has three ride modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), and the R 12 gets two ride modes (Roll and Rock). These ride modes adjust throttle response and the equipped Dynamic Traction Control and Engine Drag Torque Control. Engine Drag Control works to prevent rear wheel slip when abruptly releasing the throttle or downshifting.

These models also come standard with a Keyless Ride function, with the key now only being needed for the steering lock and fuel cap. BMW’s Intelligent Emergency Call, which calls for help in case of an accident, is also included as standard on both models.

Adding to the list of technology available on the BMW R 12 models is new instrumentation. The R 12 nineT is equipped with two round analog gauges (speedometer and tachometer), a USB-C charging port, and a 12V socket. The R 12 gets only the speedometer. Control lights and a digital display are integrated into the speedometer on both models. The display functions as a scrollable menu on the R 12 nineT and displays gear and ride mode on the R 12. Riders can also choose to purchase the option Digital Display, which replaces the round analog units with a 3.5-inch TFT display. Both models also come with full LED lighting.

In addition to many standard electronic elements, the BMW R 12 nineT and R 12 offer several optional rider aids. The optional Shift Assistant Pro allows for clutchless shifting, and Hill Start Assist Pro holds the brakes when on a hill and releases the brakes when starting from a stop. Another option is Connected Ride Control, which allows for Bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone. From the BMW Motorrad Connected app, the rider can find vehicle data, riding dynamics data, weather info for the current location, and map navigation. The MotoMount is available as an option to allow for mounting a smartphone to the handlebar.

The BMW R 12 models will each come in three color options. The standard color for both models is Blackstorm Metallic. The R 12 nineT will also come in an optional San Remo Green Metallic, while the R 12 will be available in an optional Aventurine Red Metallic. Both models will be available in Option 719 colors. Pricing has not yet been announced, but BMW expects these models to arrive in dealerships during the first quarter of 2024.

2024 Indian Lineup and Brand Collaboration Announced

2024 Indian Lineup Indian Challenger Elite

Indian Motorcycle has announced its 2024 model year lineup, as well as a brand collaboration with the popular American motocross brand 100%. As part of this collaboration, Indian is releasing a limited-edition FTR x 100% R Carbon. Other highlights of the 2024 Indian lineup include a new Indian Challenger Elite, a completely redesigned PowerBand Audio system, and color updates across the entire line.  

“It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in developing and expanding our lineup of motorcycles, delivering a wide range of new models and trim offerings in a variety of styles to meet the diverse tastes and needs of our global riding community,” said Mike Dougherty, president of Indian Motorcycle. “We’ve received incredible rider feedback and continue to refine, enhance, and fine-tune our lineup and accessories based off this feedback.”

2024 Indian Challenger Elite

Indian’s newest addition to its Elite line, first introduced with the 2018 Chieftain Elite, is the 2024 Indian Challenger Elite. Like other bikes in the Elite lineup, the Challenger Elite will be limited in production – only 325 units available worldwide – and feature premium options.

The first Challenger Elite, limited to 200 units, came out for 2022 and featured Stealth Gray and Black Metallic paint with Indy Red accents, inspired by American muscle cars. For the 2023 model year, Indian offered 150 units of the Challenger Elite in Sapphire Blue Smoke Paint with Black Smoke and Titanium Metallic Smoke accents. The 2024 Challenger Elite will feature a custom-inspired Charcoal Candy paint scheme starting at $38,499. 

The Challenger Elite is still powered by the liquid-cooled PowerPlus 108ci V-Twin making a claimed 122 hp and 128 ft-lb of torque. Stopping power comes from Brembo 4-piston radial-mount calipers biting dual 320mm semi-floating discs up front and a 2-piston caliper and 298mm floating disc in the back. ABS is standard. Front suspension is provided by a 43mm inverted telescopic fork that offers 5.1 inches of travel, and in the back is a Fox monoshock with 4.5 inches of travel and electronically adjustable preload.

Other premium features include Smart Lean Technology, an adaptive LED headlight, LED driving lights, an adjustable flare windscreen, rider and passenger Headdress footboards, heated grips, saddlebag lights, saddlebag closeouts, an all-new, custom-stitched seat for all-day riding comfort, and three selectable ride modes: Tour, Standard, and Sport.

2024 Indian Lineup Indian Challenger Elite

The 2024 Challenger Elite also comes standard with Indian Motorcycle’s all-new PowerBand Audio system completely redesigned for Indian baggers and touring models. The next-generation of the system features powerful sound, all-new styling, and factory-backed quality. 

The system features four 100-watt speakers, two fairing speakers, and two saddlebag speakers. Each speaker touts UnderGlow lighting, which uses soft-white LED rings to accent speakers that are further highlighted by a chiseled, modern look with titanium-plated domes.

The speakers deliver an increase in volume and clarity over the standard 50-watt speakers, and the system’s new Bass Boost Tune makes the music come alive with deeper bass responses, which result in 50% more bass when compared to previous PowerBand Audio offerings, according to Indian. New Dynamic EQ auto-optimizes for the highest quality audio as speed and conditions change. Speakers are durable, water-resistant, and designed to “cut through road, wind, and throttle noise to deliver an immersive listening experience.”

Select Indian Motorcycle baggers and touring models will be available straight off the dealership floor with PowerBand Audio pre-installed at the factory. The new PowerBand Audio system is also compatible with 2020-2024 models with seamless installation – no wire cutting, extra amps, or brackets are required.  

Once installed, the bike’s 7-inch touchscreen display, powered by Ride Command, automatically recognizes PowerBand Audio speakers and immediately upgrades the bike’s audio menu, and riders receive a nine-band equalizer to fully customize settings and dial-in levels for any music genre. The Power Supply Temperature Protection actively monitors circuit temperature and adjusts to prevent internal damage or system shutdown in extreme heat conditions. The rugged design is water-resistant with an Ultra Coat sealing that provides protection from water, dirt, and debris. PowerBand Audio is designed and engineered in the U.S. and is backed by the factory warranty.

Riders can take their audio system up to 800 watts, including 200 watts in the upper fairing, 200 watts in the lower fairings, 200 watts in the saddlebags, and 200 watts in the touring trunk. Riders can also update their PowerBand Audio system in their 2020-2023 baggers and touring models with the Bass Boost Tune software upgrade at their local dealership. All 2024 motorcycles will come standard with the Bass Boost Tune, which will automatically come alive once PowerBand Audio speakers are installed.  

FTR x 100% R Carbon  

Indian Motorcycle said the intent of the brand collaboration with 100% is to celebrate riders who dare to carve their own path.

“With 100% linked to iconic moments that have built today’s modern motocross and Indian Motorcycle’s celebrated 123-year history in motorcycling,” Indian reps said, “these two American brands have helped shape the rich fabric of motorcycling with their respective trailblazing spirts.”   

Pulling styling cues from 100%’s roots in action sports, the FTR x 100% R Carbon has been designed for the performance-minded rider who wants to stand out from the crowd. The bike features a Blue Candy carbon fiber tank, headlight nacelle, seat cowl, and front fender. It has a bright white powdercoated frame, with gloss paint finishes and red accents throughout.

Built on Indian’s top-of-the-line FTR model, the R Carbon, the limited-edition FTR x 100% R Carbon is also powered by a liquid-cooled 73ci V-Twin making a claimed 120 hp and 87 ft-lb of torque. It has radially mounted dual-disc Brembo monoblock brakes, a 4-inch touchscreen display powered by Ride Command with turn-by-turn navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and three selectable ride modes: Rain, Standard, and Sport.

This new limited-edition model features even more upgrades and details that set it apart. Indian Motorcycle and 100% co-branding highlight each tank side, the rear seat cowl, and the chin fairing. The fully adjustable Öhlins fork and rear shock get custom blacked-out treatment for “100% more attitude” and a black-finished titanium Akrapovič exhaust. Carbon fiber components – engine covers, chain guard, and exhaust heat shield – add additional custom detailing, and Gilles Tooling parts, including bar-end weights, and the oil cap and radiator cap, complete the look. 

The FTR x 100% R Carbon will start at $18,999, with only 400 units available around the world.

Riders purchasing the FTR x 100% R Carbon will receive a complimentary pair of Indian Motorcycle x 100% sunglasses, which are part of the exclusive Indian Motorcycle x 100% apparel collection that is being launched alongside the bike. Offering a diverse mix of men’s and women’s lifestyle pieces, the collection includes long- and short-sleeved tops, hoodies, hats, beanies, and sunglasses. The co-branded apparel collection is available in men’s sizes S-3XL and women’s sizes XS-2XL. Pricing for the Indian Motorcycle x 100% apparel collection ranges from $29.99 to $185.00 and will be available at select dealerships and at the Indian Motorcycle website.   

2024 Indian Lineup  

With the exception of the FTR Rally, FTR Championship Edition, and the 2023 Elite models, all of the 2023 Indian lineup will be returning for 2024 with a variety of new paint colors. In addition to the new colors, Indian Motorcycle says it has improved the fit and finish on its baggers and touring models, with a gloss paint finish across the dash visor, storage door, dash trim, and gauge bezel.

To celebrate its centennial, BMW Motorrad created 100 Years editions of its R nineT roadster and R 18 cruiser. Like the first BMW motorcycle built in 1923, both are powered by boxer Twin engines and painted black with white double pinstripes.

The BMW R nineT (“ninety”) was introduced in 2013 to celebrate BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary. That’s the same year the “water boxer” R 1200 GS debuted, marking a shift from air/oil cooling to air/liquid cooling. The same engine in various states of tune made its way to other R-series models, but as the first model in BMW’s new Heritage line, the R nineT retained the air/oil-cooled version of the boxer.

Designed as a modular platform that would not only allow multiple model variants but also customization by owners, the R nineT’s chassis consisted of BMW’s Paralever single-sided swingarm with shaft drive and a conventional inverted telescopic fork instead of the Telelever setup used on other R-series models. The R nineT was stylish in a classic sense, with gloss black paint that honored BMW’s long history of building black bikes, brushed aluminum tank sides and tail cowl, and spoked wheels.

The first BMW R nineT was followed by a succession of cool retro-inspired models: the stripped-down Pure, the cafe-styled Racer, the high-piped Scrambler, and the ’80s throwback Urban G/S. Each one was a sweet piece of German eye candy, fun to ogle and fun to ride, though the stretched-out riding position of the Racer brought to mind a medieval torture rack (Ja, you vill tell us vhat ve vant to know!).

Rider received an R nineT Pure test bike in 2017, and its simplicity appealed to me. I threw a bag on the tank and another on the passenger seat, bungee-corded a tent on top, and hit the road for a couple of days. As I wrote in my review, “From the first time I started it until the last mile I rode it, the R nineT Pure reminded me of why I fell in love with motorcycling. It’s not about what brand you ride or a bike’s horsepower or specs. It’s about the freedom to get away, to be out in the world.”

In 2019, BMW unveiled the R nineT /5, with its tank and front fender finished in Lupine Blue with white double pinstripes, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “slash five” series. Two years later, to celebrate 40 years of the GS line, BMW revealed a stunning yellow-and-black version of the Urban G/S that was inspired by the R 100 GS.

GEAR UP

It’s fitting, then, that for its centennial this year, BMW Motorrad created a 100 Years Edition of the R nineT, along with a similar commemorative edition of the R 18 cruiser. Production of both models is limited to 1,923 units worldwide to honor the year BMW started manufacturing motorcycles.

As with other R nineT models, the 100 Years Edition is powered by the classic air/oil-cooled 1,170cc opposed flat-Twin with a longitudinal crankshaft, a 6-speed transmission with a hydraulically actuated single-plate dry clutch, and shaft final drive. Claimed output for the engine is 109 hp and 85.5 lb-ft of torque – enough to push the 487-lb motorcycle down the road with gusto.

Inside the classic round headlight nacelle are LEDs with a lean-sensitive function that projects light into corners. Bridgestone Battlax T31 sport-touring tires provide confident grip when leaned over.

To appropriately honor such a signficant milestone, the R nineT 100 Years Edition is dripping with factory-custom details. Since BMW Motorrad’s earliest days, code number 719 has represented special customer requests that were fulfilled at the factory using top craftsmanship. Today, Option 719 parts are upgrades over stock items and are made of high-end materials or created using small-batch processes. The 100 Years Edition features the Option 719 Shadow and Shadow II Billet packs, a set of black anodized parts with milled surfaces, including the cylinder head covers, front engine cover, oil filler plug, seat holders, hand levers, rider and passenger footpegs, bar-end mirrors, and hydraulic reservoir covers.

There was no doubt that a motorcycle commemorating BMW Motorrad’s 100th anniversary would be painted black with white double pinstripes, and the front fender, tank, and rear seat cover are finished in a special Avus Black. BMW motorcycles are not known for lots of chrome, but one of the company’s most iconic models – the R 75/5 with the “Toaster” tank – had chrome-plated tank panels and side covers.

The R nineT’s tank and rear seat cover feature Classic Chrome, a “paint on chrome” process that uses Chromium III, which is REACH compliant (an EU health standard). The parts are polished to a high gloss, immersed in a series of electoplating baths (copper, nickel, and chromium), painted in multiple layers, and finished in a clear coat. The result is a stunning mirror finish that fades into the black paint that surrounds it. The exhaust manifolds are also chrome plated, while the twin silencers have a brushed aluminum finish.

Continuing the black aesthetic are Option 719 Classic spoked tubeless wheels with black anodized rims that pair well with the black on the tank knee pads, tubular steel frame, swingarm, fork tubes, and air intake snorkels. There’s a splash of color, albeit a dark one, on the two-tone black/oxblood red seat.

All those details add up to a head-turner of a motorcycle whose beauty is more than the sum of its parts. Frankly, the R nineT 100 Years Edition made me a little nervous. I was afraid of scratching it or, heaven forbid, tipping it over. But this motorcycle isn’t a showpiece – it’s meant to be ridden, and I’m happy to report that I got my jollies scraping down the peg feelers and narrowing the chicken strips without incident.

Those familiar – or in some cases obsessed – with the R-series air/oil-cooled boxer Twin already know its sound and feel are unmistakable: the raspy burble upon start-up, the deep bass chug-a-lug at idle, the crankshaft twist when revving it at a stop, the steady lope at cruising speeds, and the authoritative bark under acceleration. The one-two, one-two cadence of the boxer, with both pistons pushing outward and pulling inward simultaneously, each 360 degrees from the other on the suck-squeeze-bang-blow cycle, is like a heartbeat: lup-dup, lup-dup, lup-dup. No wonder rolling on the throttle feels so invigorating!

As a roadster, the R nineT has an agreeable seating position, with a modest reach to a wide, upright handlebar, a reasonable amount of bend in the knee, and a flat saddle. The thinly padded seat will encourage most riders to take a break well before the 4.5-gallon tank’s low-fuel light comes on. In standard trim, the 100 Years lacks a passenger seat, though it does have passenger footpegs, and a pillion seat is available as an accessory.

From the bodywork to the frame and components, black is the dominant theme on the R nineT 100 Years Edition.

With a wet weight well below 500 lb and roughly 100 hp reaching the rear wheel, the R nineT scoots along briskly when asked to do so. Its compact dimensions, taut suspension, and strong brakes are perfect for a sporting pace, allowing it to bend into corners eagerly and rewarding the rider with a satisfying rush upon exit.

Despite its classic styling, the R nineT 100 Years Edition is thoroughly modern. It doesn’t have BMW’s latest air/liquid-cooled 1,254cc boxer with ShiftCam variable-valve technology because the radiator and attendant plumbing would detract from the styling, but it’s equipped with Ride Modes Pro (Dynamic, Road, and Rain), ABS Pro, Automatic Stability Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Engine Brake Control, and LED lighting with an Adaptive turning headlight. As with most contemporary motorcycles, these electronic aids operate behind the scenes and don’t interfere with the riding experience.

Instrumentation is appropriately subdued, with a pair of round analog gauges – speedometer on the left, tachometer on the right – with white type on a black background. Inset at the bottom of each gauge is a digital display for various settings and information. The bike is also equipped with cruise control, heated grips, and a USB charging port.

Atop the R nineT 100 Years Edition’s tank is a chrome badge engraved with “1 of 1,923” and the “100 Years BMW Motorrad / Make Life a Ride” logo. The badge marks this as a special bike, not just because it’s built in limited numbers and adorned with custom parts and finishes but also because of what it stands for. It represents a century of hard work and innovation, highs and lows, successes and failures. It connects the past to the present, and it is a symbol of BMW’s values, capabilities, and ambitions. And for that, it’s worthy of respect and admiration.

The 2025 Thruxton Final Edition marks the end of production for Triumph’s legendary cafe racer.

The Thruxton is dead, long live the Thruxton! The legendary Triumph Thruxton cafe racer, with a pedigree that goes back to the 1960s, will soon have its swan song: the 2025 Triumph Thruxton Final Edition marks the end of an icon.

At a press conference about the Thruxton Final Edition, James Wood, Triumph’s global marketing manager, said, “This decision [to end production of the Thruxton] was not taken lightly,” adding that the Speed Twin “has taken over the mantle as the sports classic in our lineup with its less over-the-bars ergonomics and its own aggressive poise and good looks.”

Introduced in 1964 as a limited-edition racebike, the Triumph Thruxton found early success in endurance races, claimed all three podium places at the 1969 Thruxton 500-mile race, and became the first production motorcycle to lap the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course at more than 100 mph. With a unique blend of style, handling, and performance, the Thruxton was beloved by sport-minded “ton-up” riders the world over.

In 2004, after Triumph was resurrected and found success under the direction of John Bloor, the modern Thruxton 900 made its debut, powered by a 69-hp air/oil-cooled parallel-Twin. But the performance potential of the legendary cafe racer got a boost in 2016 with the Thruxton R, with a “high power” variant of the 1,200cc parallel-Twin that boasted a peak of 96 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque.

2025 Triumph Thruxton Final Edition

The Triumph Thruxton Final Edition is based on the Thruxton RS and uses Triumph’s High Power 1,200cc parallel-Twin that produces a claimed 104 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque. Its 270-degree crankshaft layout emits a deep V-Twin-like exhaust note.

The most striking feature of the Thuxton Final Edition is its exclusive Competition Green paint scheme with hand-painted gold pinstripes. A special touch is that each bike is signed by the artist who painted it.

“This gold lining really is an expert skill with only a small handful of artists in our world-leading paint facilities trained to apply this detail,” said Wood. “Each line is hand-painted using specially developed paint applied in long continuous strokes to get that gorgeous finish.”

Each Thruxton Final Edition comes with a certificate of authenticity featuring the bike’s VIN number, which is signed by members of the Thruxton 1200 design team and Triumph CEO Nick Bloor. A unique Final Edition engine badge will also be supplied with each motorcycle, with a gold-finished surround and “Final Edition” graphic infill.

“This really is the final chapter in this incredible story,” said Wood, “and a motorcycle that provides an exclusive opportunity for riders to own a piece of history as part of the one last final production run.”

Fully adjustable suspension includes a Showa Big Piston inverted fork and Öhlins piggyback shocks. Lightweight 17-inch aluminum 32-spoke wheels are fitted with grippy Metzeler Racetec RR tires. Up front, Brembo M50 radial monoblock calipers provide high-performance braking backed up by ABS.

The Thruxton’s classic styling includes two round analog gauges with LCD insets that provide at-a-glance information including riding mode setting, gear-position indicator, fuel level, and odometer. Three ride modes (Sport, Road, and Rain) adjust throttle response and traction control to suit conditions. A USB charging port is standard.

In addition to the Competition Green metallic paint scheme and gold pinstripes, the Thruxton Final Edition has contrasting black side panels and fenders, a gold Heritage Triumph logo on the tank, and Thruxton Final Edition branding.

Exclusive to the Final Edition, a dedicated accessory cockpit fairing is also available, color-matched to blend perfectly with the limited-edition Competition Green paint scheme.

Kawasaki Announces Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS Electric Motorcycles, Other Updated Models

Kawasaki has announced more new and updated models for 2024, including two all-new electric motorcycles – the Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS. The retro Z650RS ABS has been updated, and the Ninja ZX-4R ABS and Ninja ZX-4RR ABS join Kawasaki’s small-displacement sportbike lineup.

This announcement follows previous unveilings of several new and updated models for 2024, including the new Eliminator cruiser, the updated KLX300 dual-sport and KLX300SM supermoto, and the updated Ninja ZX-6R.

The all-new 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS are all about convenience and urban commuting. They’re powered by a 5.0kW electric motor, which generates a claimed 29.7 lb-ft of torque and a top speed of 55 mph. They come with two lithium-ion battery packs with a range of 41 miles and a 0-100% charge time of 3.7 hours. The removable batteries can be charged either on or off the bike.

Thanks to electric power, these bikes are quiet to run, have none of the vibrations and emissions of gas-powered motorcycles, and have no clutch or gears.

The Ninja e-1 ABS and Z e-1 ABS ride on a trellis frame and have a 41mm fork, a Uni-Trak shock with adjustable spring preload, and single 290mm discs with dual-piston calipers front and rear. The seat height on both is 30.9 inches. The Ninja e-1 weighs in at 308.7 lb, and the Z e-1 weighs 297.7 lb. In terms of styling and ergonomics, the Ninja e-1 adopts sporty Ninja styling, while the Ninja Z e-1 resembles the Z family.

In addition to Road and Eco ride modes, these two new electric motorcycles also come with an e-boost function to tap into extra power as well as a Walk mode with reverse that will help riders maneuver the bike at a walking pace. They also feature TFT instrumentation with smartphone connectivity and a 4.9-liter storage box in the space normally used for a fuel tank.

Both bikes come in a Metallic Bright Silver / Metallic Matte Lime Green / Ebony colorway. The 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 ABS has an MSRP of $7,599, while the 2024 Kawasaki Z e-1 ABS is priced at $7,299. Both are available for purchase starting October 3, 2023.

The retro-styled Kawasaki Z650RS ABS returns with a 649cc parallel-Twin, a slip/assist clutch, a trellis frame, a telescopic front fork, a horizontal back-link rear shock, standard ABS, LCD dual-dial instrumentation, and an LED headlight.

For 2024, the model has been updated with the addition of Kawasaki TRaction Control (KTRC), a system that looks at several parameters to adjust TC and allows riders to choose between two modes. Mode 1 is the least intrusive and helps acceleration out of corners for maximum drive from the rear wheel. Mode 2 provides earlier traction control intervention and is helpful while riding on wet roads. Riders can also choose to turn KTRC off altogether.

The 2023 Ninja ZX-4RR KRT Edition was announced in February and features a unique 399cc inline-Four that can rev out to 16,000 rpm. We got to test the ZX-4RR at Thunderhill Raceway and had a blast revving the little screamer and throwing it around the track. For 2024, Kawasaki is adding the Ninja ZX-4R ABS and Ninja ZX-4RR ABS to the lineup.

Like the ZX-4RR, both models feature a trellis frame and dual 290mm front brake discs. Technology includes a 4.3-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity. The ZX-4R has a 37mm Showa SFF-BP fork and Showa shock adjustable for spring preload, and ZX-4RR version adds dual-direction Kawasaki Quick Shifter, a higher-grade Showa fork with adjustable spring preload, and a Showa BFRC Lite shock.

CFMOTO has announced some changes to its 2024 motorcycle lineup. The CFMOTO 800NK naked sportbike joins CFMOTO’s Ibex 800 S and T adventure bikes in the middleweight class. The 450NK is another new naked sportbike that joins the 450SS, and the Papio minibike lineup now includes two models, the Papio CL and Papio SS.

Models returning for 2024 include the 300NK, 300SS, 700CL-X, and 700CL-X Sport. The 650NK naked bike and 650 ADVentura street-adventure bike have been dropped from the lineup.

Similar to its adventure bike stablemates, the new CFMOTO 800NK features a liquid-cooled 799cc parallel-Twin with DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder that makes a claimed 100 hp at 9,500 rpm and 60 lb-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm. This is a previous-gen version of the KTM 790 engine that CFMOTO builds under a partnership agreement. The 800NK has a 6-speed gearbox, throttle-by-wire, and a slip/assist clutch. The 800NK adds a Street ride mode in addition to the Sport and Rain modes found on the Ibex 800 models. All three models have cruise control, but the Ibex 800 T is the only model that features a quickshifter.

The 800NK has fully adjustable KYB suspension, with an inverted fork and single shock, and for stopping power, all 800 models have J.Juan components, with radial-mount 4-piston calipers biting dual 320mm discs up front and a 2-piston floating caliper pinching a single 260mm disc in the rear. ABS is standard.

The naked sportbike rides on 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a 57.8-inch wheelbase. Seat height is 31.5 inches, and with a 4-gal. fuel tank, the bike comes in with a curb weight of 417 lb.

The 800NK has full LED lighting and a 5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth compatibility and device pairing via the CFMOTO Ride App.

The 2024 CFMOTO 800NK will come in Nebula Black or Zircon White starting at $8,499.

When we tested the 2023 CFMOTO 450SS in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, our reviewer said the bike “proved a trustworthy steed that allowed me to work on my cornering skills with a confidence-inspiring ride.” For 2024, CFMOTO has released the naked sportbike version of the platform, which features the same liquid-cooled 449cc parallel-Twin with DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder and a 270 crank, all working together for a claimed 50 hp at 9,500 rpm and 28.8 lb-ft of torque at 7,600 rpm and mated to a 6-speed gearbox and slip/assist clutch.

Both the 450NK and 450SS also share the same suspension, with an inverted fork and multi-link rear suspension, but for stopping power, the 450NK uses J.Juan components while the 450SS uses Brembo M40 front calipers. However, other braking specs are the same, with a 4-piston front caliper biting a 320mm disc and a single-piston floating caliper and 270mm disc in the rear. ABS is standard on both bikes.

Both bikes ride on 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. CFMOTO hasn’t specified the tires on the 2024 450SS – the 2023 model was shod with CST Adreno HS AS5 tires – but the 450NK has Maxxis Supermaxx ST tires.

The 450NK comes in with a slightly longer wheelbase than the SS (53.9 inches vs. 53.5), a slightly higher seat height (31.3 inches vs. 31.0), and at a trim 364 lb, it’s 6 pounds lighter than the SS.

Both bikes have full LED lighting and a 5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth compatibility and device pairing via the CFMOTO Ride App.

Both 2024 CFMOTO 450 models come in Nebula White, but the second option for the 450NK is Zephyr Blue, as opposed to Zircon Black for the 450SS. The 450NK starts at $5,399, and the 450SS starts at $5,699.

The CFMOTO Papio takes its name from the genus that includes baboons, and when our reviewer tested out a 2022 Papio at a CFMOTO launch in Minneapolis, he said the ride indeed was like a barrel of monkeys.

For 2024, CFMOTO now offers two Papio models that will appeal to different buyers. CFMOTO says the Papio CL has “scrambler roots” and is more geared toward playing the dirt, while the Papio SS has a retro racing look.

Both bikes feature an air-cooled fuel-injected 126cc Single making 9.4 hp, but the peak comes a little sooner than the 2023 model (8,250 rpm vs. 8,500), and the torque is slightly higher at 6.8 lb-ft compared to 6.5 lb-ft on the 2023 model. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox, which is a unique feature in this segment.

Suspension is still provided by an inverted telescopic fork (with lower covers on the CL for extra protection) and a central monoshock, and braking still comes from a 2-piston caliper and 210mm disc up front with a single-piston caliper and 190mm disc in the back. ABS is standard on both models.

Both bikes roll on 12-inch three-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, with the CL tires sporting a more chunky tread pattern than the SS. The CL also has a higher handlebar and lower footpegs to suit its purpose, while the SS has clip-on handlebars, a quarter fairing, and a lower belly pan. The sharper beak on the previous Papio has been softened for 2024 and now features dual round LED headlights.

Seat height has dropped a half-inch from the previous Papio, down to 30 inches on both 2024 models, and while the fuel tank capacity is one-tenth of a gallon less at 1.8 gal, the curb weight still comes in at 251 lb. The 2024 Papio CL comes in Nebula Black or Galaxy Grey starting at $3,299, and the Papio SS comes in Magma Red, Nebula White, or Moss Green, also at $3,299.

2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X and XE Review | First Look

2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X 1200 XE

Triumph recently unveiled two models in its 2024 Scrambler lineup: the new Triumph Scrambler 1200 X, which will replace the outgoing 1200 XC and is a bike the company is touting as more accessible in terms of both functionality and cost, and an updated Scrambler 1200 XE.

Both Scramblers feature the same liquid-cooled 1,200cc parallel-Twin with SOHC and a 270-degree crankshaft. Triumph says peak power and torque now arrive slightly earlier in the rev range than previous models, with a claimed 89 hp at 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 81 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm. A new single 50mm throttle body and revised exhaust headers deliver improved flow and a broader spread of torque through the upper rev range, from 5,000 rpm through to the redline. At the unveiling of the bikes, Alastair Fairgrieve, Triumph’s global product marketing manager, said the revisions to the header also reduce heat to the rider, “in addition to the significant improvements already introduced in that area in 2021.”

Both bikes have throttle-by-wire, a 6-speed gearbox, and a slip/assist clutch. Riders can choose between five ride modes – Sport, Road, Rain, Off-Road, and Rider Configurable – with the XE offering an additional Off-Road Pro mode.

For suspension, Triumph has moved away from the Showa and Öhlins suspension and is now using Marzocchi components on both bikes. The Triumph Scrambler 1200 X features a road-biased 45mm inverted fork and preload-adjustable twin rear shocks with piggy-back reservoirs. Travel is 6.7 inches front and back, down from 7.9 inches on the outgoing XC. The 1200 XE has a more off-road focused setup, with fully adjustable components front and back, including more compression and rebound increments, and offering 9.8 inches of travel.

Triumph’s Tiger 900 models also use Marzocchi, and Fairgrieve called the company “the go-to guys,” adding that Triumph was “really confident that they could deliver a great setup.”

Stuart Wood, Triumph’s chief engineer, echoed this sentiment later during the unveiling. “We had a really good experience working with Marzocchi on the Tiger 900s,” he said, adding that Triumph was similarly pleased with the outcome on the Scrambler 1200s. “The benefit is 100% for the rider and the owner in terms of value. It’s helping us maintain that price point.”

Beyond making the bikes accessible from a pricing standpoint – the Triumph Scrambler 1200 X is priced $1,150 less than the outgoing XC – another area where Triumph representatives said they received considerable customer feedback is in the area of seat height. While the XC had a 33.1-inch seat height, the new Scrambler 1200 X drops it almost an inch to 32.3 inches – or 31.3 inches with the accessory low seat.

Wood said this is a tradeoff for suspension travel on the X, but when combined with the XE, which has a 34.3-inch seat height, it actually creates more options.

“Somewhere between the ground, the footpegs, and the love of suspension travel, you get the seat height,” he said. “So now we’ve got choice, and that’s what it’s all about. It broadens that choice, and more people can choose to get involved [in riding].”

Fairgrieve added that it creates a “really nice walk across the range.”

“We start down at the 400 X in the scramble range, move up to the 900, and then we’ve got a really nice ladder up to the full 1200 low seat height [on the X] and then the XE if you really want to go off-road have fun.”

When it comes to stopping power, the XE boasts twin Brembo Stylema radial monoblock 4-piston front calipers clamping down on 320mm floating discs. The X has two 310mm discs and 2-piston axial calipers. Both bikes have a single-piston rear caliper and 255mm disc, as well as cornering ABS (switchable on the XE) and switchable cornering traction control.

Both bikes share the same tubular steel frame, as well as side-laced stainless steel wire-spoked wheels (21 inches in front, 17 in the rear) with aluminum rims shod with tubeless Metzeler tires: road-focused, dual-purpose Karoo Street on the X and Metzeler Tourance on the XE.

Some key ergonomic differences include different handlebar designs, with the XE measuring 2.56 inches wider than the X. The XE also has reversible risers as well a removable spacer for a 0.39-inch height adjustment. The XE also boasts adjustable foot controls to suit a variety of riding styles and footwear.

Both bikes feature a twin-sided, cast aluminum swingarm, with the XE’s swingarm coming in 1.26 inches longer than the X for more control and confidence on difficult off-road terrain. And for improved touring capability, Triumph offers an accessory high “Dakar” screen and rugged luggage system with tailbag accessory options offering 102 liters of total capacity.

The Scrambler 1200 X features a hybrid multifunction LCD/TFT display incorporated in an circular instrument dial, and the XE has an integrated and customizable full-color TFT display with two design layout themes, each with a further three options to change the level of information displayed.

From an aesthetics standpoint, both models feature a classic one-piece ribbed bench seat – black for the XE and brown for the X – and a variety of finishes and details, including sculpted side panels with a brushed aluminum Scrambler 1200 badge, the iconic Triumph triangle tank badge, a brushed aluminum Monza-style filler cap, and a brushed stainless tank strap. The XE is finished with brushed aluminum fenders, while the X features high quality painted fenders.

The 2024 Triumph Scrambler 1200 X will be available in Carnival Red, Ash Grey, or Sapphire Black starting at $13,595. The Scrambler 1200 XE will be available in Phantom Black & Storm Grey, which features red accents, the new Baja Orange & Phantom Black, or the popular Sapphire Black starting at $15,295. Orders can be placed now at Triumph dealers, with bikes expected to arrive in February 2024.

It’s been a few weeks since our test ride on the 2023 Honda SCL500, and we still have a smile on our face. The SCL500 doesn’t make much power (about 46 hp at the rear wheel) and it doesn’t have any fancy features, and that’s what we love about it. Like the ’60s-era Honda scramblers that inspired the SCL500, it’s a basic, cool-looking runabout that is ideal for cruising around town or taking short jaunts on backroads. Its simplicity is its virtue. Just pure, uncomplicated fun.

With its trademark “flying” V-Twin with air-cooled cylinder heads jutting outward from beneath the sculpted fuel tank and its classic styling, the Moto Guzzi V7 has been an iconic Italian motorcycle for nearly six decades.

Paul d’Orléans, founder of The Vintagent and curator of numerous motorcycle exhibits at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, chose a 1975 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport as part of the “Silver Shotgun” exhibit that highlighted Italian motorcycle design in the 1970s.

2024 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa

The latest iteration of this legendary model, the Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa, made a surprise debut during the 2023 Moto Guzzi Open House, captivating thousands of enthusiastic fans who gathered in Mandello del Lario, Italy, for this highly anticipated event, a favorite of Guzzisti worldwide.

The Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa represents a return to the V7’s classic sportiness with modern amenities, marked by its elegant lines that flow from the small fairing to the solo-style saddle (the passenger portion forms the cafe racer “hump”). These design elements evoke the thrilling ambiance of bygone racing eras, which was rekindled in 2019 with the Moto Guzzi Fast Endurance – a single-brand racing series that has allowed many riders to enjoy the thrill of racing on V7 machines.

2024 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Corsa

The V7 Stone Corsa has a vibrant two-tone livery, with a metallic gray color accentuated by a bold red stripe that runs vertically along the top fairing, extending to the lower part of the fuel tank and to the side panels. To complete the racing aesthetic, an optional color-matched cowl is available for the rear portion of the saddle, enhancing the single-seat configuration.

The equipment package further elevates the V7 Stone Corsa’s aesthetics and performance, with bar-end mirrors, a black anodized billet aluminum fuel cap, and a distinctive plate on the handlebar clamp denoting the Corsa’s special status. The fork gaiters found on the standard V7 Stone have been removed to give the V7 Stone Corsa a sleeker appearance.

Powering the V7 Stone Corsa is an air-cooled 853cc 90-degree V-Twin with 2 valves per cylinder that makes a claimed 65 hp at 6,800 rpm and 54 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm, and it has a 6-speed transmission. Suspension consists of a nonadjustable 40mm fork and dual preload-adjustable shocks. It rolls on cast wheels – 18-inch front, 17-inch rear – and has Brembo brakes, with a 4-piston caliper squeezing a 320mm disc in front and a 2-piston caliper squeezing a 260mm disc out back.

Standard features include ABS, traction control, and LED lighting. The V7 Stone Corsa has a 30.7-inch seat height, a 5.5-gallon fuel tank, and a wet weight of 481 lb (tank 90% full).
