We test the all-new 2023 Triumph Tiger 1200, which is available in five variants: GT, GT Pro, GT Explorer, Rally Pro, and Rally Explorer. The GT models are geared toward street adventures, while the Rally models are designed to get dirty. We rode all but the base-model GT at the Tiger 1200 world press launch in Portugal.

The updated Tiger 1200 adventure bike is both slimmer and stronger. It lost 55 lbs and gained serious grunt with the 1,160cc inline-Triple adapted from the Speed Triple 1200 RS, which makes 148 hp at 9,000 rpm and 96 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm. Reworked from nose to tail and crown to sole, the new Tiger 1200 platform also has a new lightweight trellis frame, a cast-aluminum Tri-Link swingarm with shaft final drive, Showa semi-active suspension, a full electronics suite and much more.

2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660 | Video Review

We test the 2022 Triumph Tiger Sport 660, an all-new middleweight sport-tourer based on the Trident 660. With a base price of $9,295, it goes head-to-head with value-priced stalwarts like the Honda NC750X ($8,699) and Kawasaki Versys 650 ($8,899).

Although much of the Trident 660’s underpinnings carry over to the Tiger Sport 660, including the liquid-cooled, 12-valve, 660cc inline-Triple, which produces 80 horsepower at 10,250 rpm and 47 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm (claimed at the crank), as well as ride modes (Road and Rain), switchable traction control, and ABS, the sport-tourer gets steeper rake, more suspension travel, a small fairing, and a one-hand-adjustable windscreen. The rider triangle is more open and the seating position is more upright.

At 454 pounds, the Tiger Sport 660 is light, agile, and user-friendly. Although clearly built to a price (for example, the only suspension adjustability is rear preload), it has good build quality and doesn’t feel cheap. Triumph’s new sport-tourer is one of those bikes that hits the sweet spot – it’s the right price, it’s the right size, it has the right amount of fun and versatility, it has the right features (except for cruise control), and it can be outfitted with hard saddlebags, a top case, heated grips, and more.

2022 Honda Navi | Video Review

We test the 2022 Honda Navi, the latest addition to Honda’s miniMOTO lineup. Toeing the line between a twist-and-go scooter and step-over motorcycle, the latest mini borrows the fan-cooled, 109cc Single and CVT transmission from the Activa 6G and the Grom’s popular design language. And with an MSRP of just $1,807, it fits within any budget.

We spent a day cruising around Costa Mesa, California, on the Navi and found it to be a fun, user-friendly machine, the perfect gateway to the world of motorcycling.

2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660 | Video Review

We test the 2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660, a new adventure bike with a 659cc parallel-Twin derived from Aprilia’s RS 660 and Tuono 600 sportbikes. Tuned for a broad spread of torque, in the Tuareg 660 the engine makes 80 horsepower at 9,250 rpm and 51.6 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. MSRP is $11,999.

The engine is carried in a lightweight tubular-steel trellis frame and wheelbase is 59 inches. Aprilia claims a 449-pound wet weight and 275 miles of range from the 4.75-gallon fuel tank.

As with other bikes in Aprilia’s lineup, the Tuareg 660 gets the Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) electronics suite with selectable engine maps and settings for traction control and engine braking. ABS can be switched off entirely or just at the rear wheel. Standard equipment also includes cruise control and a 5-inch TFT color display with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation via the Aprilia MIA app. The bike also has full LED lighting

The Tuareg 660 has fully adjustable suspension with 9.4 inches of front/rear travel, with a 43mm inverted fork and a rear shock with progressive linkage. There’s 9.5 inches of ground clearance for off-road riding, and the Tuareg 660 rolls on 21-inch front/18-inch rear spoked wheels with tubeless tires.

Aprilia hosted a press launch for the Tuareg 660 in Sardinia, Italy, and the test route included paved roads, dirt, gravel, and mud. Contributor Peter Jones found the Tuareg 660 user-friendly, fun to ride, and highly capable. “It is reasonably comfortable, has seamless power, shifting, and mode selections, and provides confidence-inspiring agility. The brakes provide consistent feedback, the suspension, though fully tunable, should match most riders needs as is, and the electronics are dang smart. It’s one of the easiest and friendliest motorcycles to ride while being more than up to the task of being ridden hard.”

2022 Husqvarna Norden 901 | Video Review

We test the 2022 Husqvarna Norden 901, a new adventure bike based on the KTM 890 Adventure platform. It’s powered by a 890cc parallel-Twin that makes 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 74 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm at the crank (claimed). MSRP is $13,999.

With styling nearly identical to the popular concept Husqvarna showed at EICMA in 2019, the Norden 901 has a rally-style fairing with a round headlight and integrated fog lights. Positioned between the KTM 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R, the Norden 901 is aimed at adventure riders who want to travel long distances but not sacrifice off-road capability.

The Norden 901 is equipped with ride modes (Street, Offroad, Urban, and optional Explorer), ABS (Road and Offroad modes), lean-angle-sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control, an up/down quickshifter (Easy Shift), and cruise control. The wide, flat seat height adjustable (33.6/34.4 in.). It’s equipped with adjustable WP Apex suspension, with 8.7/8.5 inches of front rear travel, and its 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tubeless wheels are shod with Pirelli Scorpion Rally FTR tires.

We subjected the 2022 Husqvarna Norden 901 to two days of on- and off-road testing on to São Miguel, a wet, foggy island in the North Atlantic Ocean that’s part of the Portuguese Azores archipelago and is crisscrossed with roads and tracks covered in pavement, cobblestones, gravel, mud, and sand.

VIDEO: IMS Rides – Riding the Central California Coast

We joined Progressive IMS Outdoors for a ride up the coast to Sonoma Raceway for the Northern California show. ⁠We cruised up U.S. Highway 101 to Santa Barbara, went over San Marcos Pass on Highway 154, and had lunch at the funky Madonna Inn.⁠

Then the fun really began on California Highway 1, riding past Morro Rock, checking out the elephant seals near San Simeon, and riding on the world famous stretch of Highway 1 from Ragged Point to Big Sur, for a night of camping at Fernwood Resort.⁠

Fort Bragg to Sonoma Raceway: IMS Outdoors Northern California Ride

Even though it was July, the rugged Big Sur coast was foggy and cold. We rolled over the iconic Bixby Bridge before arriving in Carmel-by-the-Sea.⁠

After hugging Monterey Bay on Highway 1, in Santa Cruz we turned onto tight, twisty Highway 9 and rode into the towering redwoods. We continued north on Highway 35 (aka Skyline Drive) and stopped for lunch at the legendary Alice’s Restaurant.⁠

Back on Highway 1 along the coast for a fantastic ride from Half Moon Bay to Pacifica, including a 4,000-ft Devils Slide Tunnel bored through the mountains.

In San Francisco, we stretched our legs at the Presidio before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and heading to Sonoma Raceway for the Progressive IMS Outdoors show.⁠

We test the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, which won Rider’s 2021 Motorcycle of the Year award. It’s a fully featured sport-tourer powered by an 890cc inline-Triple that makes 108 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 63 lb-ft of torque at 7,200 rpm at the rear wheel. MSRP is $14,899.

For 2021, the new Tracer 9 GT gets the larger crossplane Triple from the MT-09, which is lighter, more fuel efficient, and more powerful. An all-new aluminum frame is made using a controlled-fill diecast process that reduces mass and increases rigidity. A new aluminum swingarm is more rigid, and a new steel subframe increases load capacity and allows an accessory top trunk to be mounted along with the larger 30-liter saddlebags. New spinforged wheels reduce unsprung weight, and they’re shod with grippy Bridgestone Battlax T32 GT sport-touring tires.

In addition to updated throttle response modes and all-new KYB semi-active suspension, the Tracer 9 GT now has a 6-axis IMU that enables a suite of electronic rider aids adapted from the YZF-R1, including lean-angle-sensitive traction control, ABS, slide control, and lift control. It also has full LED lighting (including cornering lights) and a new dual-screen TFT display. The rider/passenger seats have been upgraded, and the rider’s ergonomics are adjustable.

We test the all-new 2022 BMW R 18 B “Bagger” and R 18 Transcontinental, two heavyweight touring cruisers powered by the 1,802cc Big Boxer that cranks out 116 lb-ft of torque at 3,000rpm. Based on the R 18 platform, they have traditional styling inspired by the 1930s-era R 5.

The R18B and R18 Transcontinental (TC) have a handlebar-mounted batwing-style fairing, a Marshall audio system, an infotainment system with a 10.25-inch TFT display, hard saddlebags, and a passenger seat. With its low windshield and slim seat, the R 18 B is suited for solo touring and boulevard cruising with the occasional passenger. Designed for two-up touring, the R 18 TC is equipped with a tall windshield, a wide seat, wind deflectors, driving lights, heated seats, highway bars, a large trunk, and a wrap-around passenger backrest.

We test the 2022 Kawasaki KLR650, which got only its second major update since the legendary dual-sport was introduced in 1987. After being out of Kawasaki’s lineup for a couple of years, it returns better than ever and is still one of the best deals on two wheels, starting at just $6,699.

Though still powered by a liquid-cooled 652cc Single, the KLR finally gets fuel injection, an updated battery and generator, and other upgrades. It also has upgraded brakes with optional ABS, increased load capacity and optional hard saddlebags, adjustable rear suspension, new styling with an adjustable windscreen, a new digital display with a fuel gauge, an accessories bar with power ports, and more.

2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 | Video Review

We test the all-new 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7, a 689cc sportbike based on the MT-07 platform. The R7 delivers track-ready performance within reach, with an MSRP of $8,999.

Since the new middleweight supersport will be part of the R-series family and slot between the YZF-R3 and YZF-R1, it’s only natural to call the new bike YZF-R7. Those with a long memory may recall the 1999 YZF-R7 (aka OW-02), a 500-unit race homologation special built to compete in World Superbike. That sort of unobtainium machine is exactly what Yamaha wanted to avoid with the MT-07-based R7.

We tested the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 on the track at Atlanta Motorsports Park. The R7’s easygoing nature was a boon, never threatening or overwhelming, which is the point. It’s accessible for any level of rider. It’s a supersport bike for the masses. More performance than an R3, but more accessible than an R6 or R1 on all fronts. The R7 could be the perfect bike for someone who wants to sharpen their skills on back roads or try their hand at track days or club racing. Less money spent on the bike means more money available for tires – and a sticky set will last a lot longer! Yamaha has done a fine job producing a motorcycle that’s the perfect blend of accessibility and capability.
