2024 BMW R 18 Roctane | First Look Review

2024 BMW R 18 Roctane

BMW Motorrad has announced details on the 2024 BMW R 18 Roctane, the fifth member of the R 18 family and a bike the company calls “a cruiser, a bagger, and everything in between.” 

The Roctane joins the R 18, R 18 Classic, R 18 B, and R 18 Transcontinental but borrows styling cues from other past BMW models, such as the 1936 BMW R 5, where the iconic air/oil-cooled Boxer engine is the epicenter of the “streamliner” design. Other key design features drawn from the past include the double-loop frame, exposed drive shaft, and rigid-style rear. 

What Makes the BMW R 18 Roctane Rock? 

The heart of the new BMW R 18 Roctane is the 1,802cc “Big Boxer” opposed Twin, mated to a 6-speed transmission and a single-plate dry slipper clutch and a nickel-plated driveshaft.

When we put the 2021 BMW R 18 on Jett Tuning’s dyno, it sent 80 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and 109 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheel at 2,900 rpm.

The new R 18 Roctane can be equipped with optional Reverse Assist and Hill Start Control, and the bike comes standard with keyless start and the same three ride modes R 18 riders are familiar with: Rain, Roll, and Rock, with distinct throttle maps and settings for Automatic Stability Control and Engine Drag Control in each mode.

The R 18 Roctane stands apart from its siblings with a blacked-out engine and drivetrain and a Dark Chrome exhaust system. The larger 21-inch front and 18-inch rear alloy wheels, combined with the mid-rise, black-coated handlebar give the Roctane what BMW calls “a more purposeful look.”

The 3.5-inch-wide front wheel is shod with a 120/70 B21 tire, while a 180/55 B18 tire wraps around the 5.5-inch rear wheel. The 21-inch front wheel extends the trail to 7.3 inches on the R 18 Roctane (vs. 5.9 inches on the standard R 18) for better straight-line stability. 

Braking comes from 4-piston fixed calipers biting dual 300mm discs up front and a single 300mm disc in the rear, and BMW Motorrad Integral ABS is standard. The R 18 Roctane has a 49mm telescopic fork and a central rear shock with travel-dependent damping and adjustable spring preload, providing the same 4.7-inch/3.5-inch front/rear travel as the R 18.

Also inspired by the 1936 BMW R 5 – and almost all BMW motorcycles until the early 1970s – the R 18 Roctane’s round instrument cluster is integrated into the metal LED headlight housing and includes information such as engine rpm, gear indicator, status inquiry, and trip computer details. An adaptive headlight is still optional and works by activating separate LED elements in the main headlight depending on the lean angle.

The R 18 Roctane features a slim two-level seat that tapers towards the rear, with rear passenger straps, and is equipped with footboards and a heel-toe shifter. The 28.3-inch seat height puts the R 18 Roctane an inch higher than the standard R 18 but right about on par with the R 18 B.

The R 18 Roctane is also equipped with body-color painted saddlebags with integrated LED taillights. They offer 27 liters of storage capacity on each side and optional removable liners are available. The “filler stripes” that cover the space between the bags and the bike can be selected from the available accessories. The original BMW Motorrad Accessories range also offers soft luggage options such as the rear bag or frame bag made of waxed canvas with leather trim.

The bike has a 4.2-gal fuel tank and a claimed wet weight of 825 lb. 

The 2024 BMW R 18 Roctane will come in Black Storm Metallic, Mineral Grey Metallic Matte, and Manhattan Metallic Matte starting at $18,695. It’s expected to launch in the third quarter of 2023, but Rider will be heading to Germany in late May for a first ride, so we’ll share our impressions soon.

Big news out of Harley-Davidson today with the release of two new Harley-Davidson CVO models that feature significant styling updates for the popular Street Glide and Road Glide models. Just as significant, if not more so, is the debut of a new 121ci Milwaukee-Eight motor that includes a new variable-valve-timing system.  

H-D’s premium CVO line regularly features new components that eventually make their way into the MoCo’s regular product portfolio. These mid-2023 models will have their public reveal at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming extravaganza in July.

“With the introduction of the all-new CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide, we’ve completely reimagined two of Harley-Davidson’s most iconic motorcycles and redefined the boundaries of CVO in the process,” said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. 

Full details of the new bikes won’t be released until their official premiere on June 7, but here’s what we know so far.  

The Street Glide’s iconic batwing fairing has been resculpted into an edgier design, with an undercut headlight panel that vaguely resembles the LiveWire One. The windscreen is laid back for a faster profile, and it’s likely that it now includes electric adjustability. Turnsignals are now integrated into the fairing rather than using unsightly external signals.

The Road Glide’s sharknose fairing also receives a freshened treatment with added creases in its design to create a more modern look. The LED headlamp has been styled to emulate the twin headlights of earlier designs, and turnsignal lamps are integrated within the outer portions of the fairing. An electric adjustment for the windshield is also probable here.

“These all-new designs bring a cohesive and dynamic flow from the front fenders to the saddlebags,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Design and Creative Director. “Achieving a greater degree of visual change than any generation prior, the design of these CVO models are revolutionary takes on the historical art of evolution. Like all Harley-Davidson motorcycles, these new models are meant to instill a sense of timeless desire.”

Both models feature a new inverted fork and Brembo radial-mount brake calipers, along with a new wire-spoke wheel design that will allow for tubeless tires. Two paint/finish options will be available, but we’ve only seen the gray colorway in these photos. New infotainment systems are also teased but not seen. We expect a large TFT screen, perhaps around 10 inches, to navigate the controls and settings. A 6-axis IMU will likely be included to inform electronic rider aids like cornering ABS and traction control.  

The most interesting item in these new CVOs is the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine, a step up in displacement from the 117ci power units that were once the exclusive domain of CVOs but have now migrated to regular Harleys. H-D has thus far provided no details about the new V-Twin, but certification filings in Australia reveal that it displaces 1,923cc and has a peak output of 103 hp. Its variable valve timing is intended to broaden the motor’s range of power to pull strongly from down low and also rev out on top. It may also serve as a way to extend the life of the air-cooled V-Twins in the face of stricter emissions regulations. 

“By rethinking these two models from the ground up,” Zeitz added, “we are ushering in a new era of innovation, design, engineering, and technology, while expanding the definition of Harley-Davidson CVO and taking the Grand American Touring experience to another level. The new CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide break the mold and reset the bar for the pinnacle Harley-Davidson riding experience.”  

Pricing for the new CVOs has yet to be announced, but they’ll surely carry MSRPs higher than the $42,000 of last year’s CVO Street/Road Glides.

2023 Indian Pursuit Elite and Chieftain Elite | First Look Review

Following the announcement last November of the 2023 Challenger Elite, Indian Motorcycle recently announced the release of the new Indian Pursuit Elite and the return of the Chieftain Elite. Like other bikes in the Elite lineup, both bikes will be limited in production and feature premium options. These new bikes in the 2023 Indian Motorcycle lineup will begin shipping to dealers in spring 2023.

The Chieftain Elite was the first bike in Indian’s Elite program, introduced for the 2018 model year. Aaron Jax, vice president of Indian Motorcycle, said the idea was to create an offering that was “not just limited in quantity, but exclusive in nature with custom details straight from the factory.”

“Today, with jewel-like finishes, our Elite line of baggers and touring models truly represent the best-of-the-best and deliver a statement like nothing else on the road,” Jax said.

There will be only 150 units available worldwide of the Indian Pursuit Elite, a touring bike that Indian says is “designed for riders who value the journey as much as the destination.”  

The Indian Pursuit Elite has electronically adjustable rear suspension preload from Fox that is managed from the bike’s infotainment system. Braking comes from radially mounted Brembo 4-piston calipers biting dual semi-floating 320mm discs up front and a 2-piston caliper and floating 298mm disc in the rear.

The bike rides on 5-spoke precision-cut wheels (19 inches in the front, 16 in the rear) with tire pressure monitoring and wrapped in Metzeler Cruisetec tires. It’s powered by a liquid-cooled 108ci PowerPlus V-Twin making a claimed 122 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm and mated to a 6-speed gearbox and slip/assist clutch.

The Indian Pursuit Elite offers Smart Lean Technology using a Bosch IMU to manage traction control, ABS, and torque. Backlit switch cubes improve the rider’s ability to see the bike’s controls at night, and the Pathfinder Adaptive LED headlight combined with Pathfinder S LED driving lights and saddlebag lights deliver improved visibility. Both rider and passenger get a heated seat with adjustable controls on the seat and infotainment system.

The Indian Pursuit Elite is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen powered by Ride Command and offers Apple CarPlay integration, turn-by-turn navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, one year of Ride Command+ connected features, and more. The bike’s Powerband Audio includes built-in amplifiers, a nine-band equalizer, and 16 speakers.

Offering more than 35 gallons of remote-locking storage, riders can keep all cargo protected inside weatherproof saddlebags and trunk, and for those looking to achieve further customization, a quick-release low-profile trunk is available as a color-matched accessory.

The 2023 Indian Pursuit Elite comes in premium Super Graphite Metallic and Black Metallic paint with Shadow Bronze Chrome accents. Color-matched Elite badging and premium components complete the bike’s design. Pricing starts at $39,999.

Limited to only 175 units globally, the 2023 Indian Chieftain Elite features what the company says is “meaner and more aggressive styling with custom-inspired details straight from the factory.”

The Chieftain Elite bagger features Indian’s most powerful air-cooled engine, the Thunderstroke 116, which delivers a claimed 126 lb-ft of torque. While this is the same mill as the 2022 Chieftain Elite, the standard Chieftain is powered by a 111ci engine making a claimed 119 lb-ft of torque. The 2023 Chieftain Elite’s open fender showcases a new 10-spoke precision machined front wheel. Similar to the Indian Pursuit Elite, the wheels are 19-inches in the front and 16-inches in the rear with tire pressure monitoring and shod in Metzeler Cruisetec tires.

Like other Chieftain models, rear cylinder deactivation improves rider comfort when riding through slower traffic, while three selectable ride modes – Tour, Standard, and Sport – allow riders to adjust the bike’s throttle response to match their riding style.

The 2023 Chieftain Elite has a 46mm inverted fork and air-adjustable single rear shock. Stopping power comes from dual 4-piston calipers and 300mm floating discs up front, with a 2-piston caliper and 300mm floating disc in the rear. ABS is standard.

From a style perspective, the Adaptive Pathfinder LED headlight and rear saddlebag LED lights on the 2023 Chieftain Elite provide good visibility at night, as well as some head turns. An adjustable tinted flare windscreen raises or lowers to the rider’s preferred position with the push of a handlebar-mounted button.

Like the Indian Pursuit Elite, the 2023 Indian Chieftain Elite features the 7-inch touchscreen display powered by Ride Command with Apple CarPlay, GPS with navigation, and Ride Command+ features, like live traffic and weather overlays, and a vehicle locator feature. The bike has backlit switch cubes, an integrated PowerBand audio system, keyless ignition, and weatherproof and remote-locking saddlebags with more than 18 gallons of storage. For riders looking to personalize their ride, color matched accessories are available, including a quick-release low-profile trunk, as well as lower fairings.

Harley-Davidson kicked off its yearlong 120th anniversary celebration with the announcement of the first release of new models in the 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle lineup. Included in the announcement are the CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model and six additional limited-edition motorcycles featuring exclusive 120th Anniversary commemorative paint, finishes, and details, as well as a refreshed Harley-Davidson Breakout cruiser and the new Nightster Special middleweight sport motorcycle. In the three-wheeled department, Harley-Davidson announced the new 2023 Road Glide 3 trike as well as a restyled and blacked-out Freewheeler trike.

Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Models 

The limited-edition, premium CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model celebrates 120 years of craftsmanship with what the company says is “one of the most intricate paint schemes ever offered by Harley-Davidson.” 

Panels of Heirloom Red are applied over a base coat of Anniversary Black, each outlined with a bright red pinstripe and a hand-applied gold paint scallop. Subtle details added within the panels portray the head and wings of a soaring eagle. The gold-plated tank medallion depicts an Art Deco rendition of the eagle, an iconic Harley-Davidson design element.

Additional details include Alcantara seat surfaces with gold and red contrast stitching accents, gold-tone powertrain inserts, and bright red rocker boxes and pushrod tube collars. Only 1,500 examples of the CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model will be produced for global distribution, each serialized with a laser-etched panel on the fuel tank console.

The 2023 CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary starts at $51,999.

Special 120th Anniversary paint in a different scheme will be offered on six additional limited-production Harley-Davidson models, with color and design combinations inspired by early Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Each features a classic paneled paint scheme with gleaming Heirloom Red as the base color. Panels are outlined with a bright-red pinstripe and filled with a darker Midnight Crimson fade. Additional details include an Art Deco eagle tank medallion, seat covers with red side panels and gold embroidered Harley-Davidson logo, and red fade powertrain inserts. 

This commemorative design will be offered on the following serialized models: 

  • Ultra Limited Anniversary (production limited to 1,300 motorcycles globally) 
  • Tri Glide Ultra Anniversary (1,100 motorcycles) 
  • Street Glide Special Anniversary (1,600 motorcycles)

Harley-Davidson Breakout is Back

After being taken off the U.S. market in 2020, the Harley-Davidson Breakout model will return to the North America model line, powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twin engine making a claimed 101 hp at 4,750 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm.  

Other features of the Breakout include a 5-gallon fuel tank topped with a low-profile chrome console shaped to lengthen the motorcycle profile, a new handlebar riser and stainless steel handlebar that is 0.75 inch taller than the previous model, and a chrome finish applied to the rear fender supports, side covers, muffler shields, turn signals, mirrors, Heavy Breather intake, and new 26-spoke cast-aluminum wheels (26-inchers in the front, 18 in the rear), which are finished in gloss black with machined details.  

The 2023 Harley-Davidson Breakout starts at $20,999 and comes in Vivid Black or, for an additional $525, Black Denim, Baja Orange, or Atlas Silver Metallic. (see photo gallery at end)

This new middleweight Nightster features the liquid-cooled Revolution Max 975T V-Twin engine. Harley says the engine is tuned to make tremendous torque at low RPM (claimed 70 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm), adding that its integration into the bike as the central member of the chassis also minimizes overall motorcycle weight.

The Nightster Special has four ride modes (Road, Sport, Rain, or user-customized), traction control, drag-torque slip control, and cruise control. Stopping power comes from a Brembo axial-mount 4-piston caliper biting a 320mm disc in the front and a single-piston caliper and 260mm disc in the rear. ABS is standard, as is cruise control. 

Other features include a passenger pillion and footpegs, cast aluminum wheels with tire pressure monitoring, and full LED lighting. The handlebar and 5-inch handlebar riser move hand controls 2 inches up and 1 inch back to put the rider in a commanding position on the motorcycle, and the 3.1-gallon fuel cell is located below the seat to move the weight of fuel low in the chassis, which lowers the center of gravity for reportedly improved handling and easier lift off the side stand. The fuel fill is reached by lifting the hinged locking seat.

A 4-inch round TFT screen displays all instrumentation and infotainment functions managed using buttons on the hand control array. The display supports infotainment generated by the rider’s Bluetooth-equipped mobile device. Most infotainment functions also require a Bluetooth headset and speakers worn within a helmet. 

Using voice commands through the headset, the rider can receive or place calls through a mobile device. Navigation is supplied by the Harley-Davidson App for iOS or Android downloaded into the rider’s mobile device. When navigation is enabled, the rider may select a moving map display or turn-by-turn map displayed on the screen, assisted by audio instructions through the headset. 

The 2023 Harley-Davidson Nightster Special starts at $14,999 and comes in Vivid Black or, for an additional $450, Black Denim, Bright Billiard Blue, or Industrial Yellow. (see photo gallery at end)

The all-new Road Glide 3 model is a first for Harley-Davidson, and the company says the trike combines “the advantages of three wheels and a load of hot rod attitude with the comfort, convenience and style of the frame-mounted Road Glide fairing.” 

The Road Glide 3 features the Milwaukee-Eight 114, electric reverse gear, and trike-specific rider safety enhancements, including electronic linked braking, ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control – all of which are cornering enhanced. 

A frame-mounted fairing features triple splitstream vents to help reduce rider helmet buffeting, dual Daymaker LED headlamps, a low-profile windscreen, and a weather-proof rear trunk with top-mounted door and 2 cubic feet of capacity. The trike has Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels with machined details with exposed lug nuts on rear wheels and bobtail rear fenders. Choose black or chrome finish in each color.

The Boom! Box GTS 6.5-inch color TFT touch screen navigation/infotainment system powers two 5.25-inch fairing speakers, and supports standard Bluetooth connectivity to a mobile device that enables hands-free calling (requires Bluetooth headset).  

The 2023 Road Glide 3 starts at $32,999 and comes in Vivid Black. For a bump in the MSRP, you can get Gray Haze (+$900), Bright Billiard Blue (+$900), Vivid Black w/Black Finish (+$1,100), Gray Haze w/Black Finish (+$2,000), or Bright Billiard Blue w/Black Finish (+$2,000). (see photo gallery at end)

The Freewheeler cruiser-inspired trike still has a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine and electric reverse gear, but it gets a blacked-out restyle for 2023. The front end, headlamp nacelle, tank console, hand and foot controls, powertrain, and exhaust all have black finishes in place of previous bright finishes. 

New Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels feature exposed rear-wheel lug nuts, and rear 18-inch wheels replace the previous 15-inchers. 

Other features of the 2023 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler include trike-specific rider safety enhancements, including electronic linked braking, ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control – all of which are cornering enhanced. The trike has a mini-ape handlebar, custom bobtail rear fenders, dual mufflers with slash-down tips, and a weather-proof rear trunk with top-mounted door and 2 cubic feet of capacity.

The 2023 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler starts at $29,999 for Vivid Black. For an extra $750 on MSRP, you can get White Sand Pearl, or add $1,500 for Bright Billiard Blue/Billiard Gray. (see photo gallery at end)

Harley-Davidson Offers More Cruise Control and Traction Control 

In addition to the new bikes, Harley announced that electronic cruise control will be a standard feature for the Fat Boy, Fat Bob, Breakout, and Low Rider S models, and it remains standard on Low Rider ST and Heritage Classic models.  

The switchable Traction Control System will be offered as a new option for the Breakout, Low Rider S and Low Rider ST models.

Suzuki Announces More Returning 2023 Models

Suzuki has announced additional models to its 2023 product line, including the sport-touring Suzuki GSX-S1000GT/GT+ models, plus three Boulevard models: the M109R B.O.S.S. muscle cruiser and the C50 and C50T. The announcement comes on the tail of Suzuki’s unveiling of an all-new 776cc DOHC parallel-Twin engine at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy, in November. The new engine will power the 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 800DE (and Adventure variant) and the 2023 Suzuki GSX-8S.

2023 Suzuki GSX-S1000GT/GT+

Announced as Rider’s 2022 Motorcycle of the Year, the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+ (the ‘+’ denoting the model with standard saddlebags, whereas the base GT model goes without) returns for 2023 with all the features that merit its MOTY status and a new color choice for the GT+.

Both the GSX-S1000GT and GT+ have throttle-by-wire enabling the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System, which is monitored on the 6.5-inch TFT display and includes three ride modes (Active, Basic, and Comfort) that adjust throttle response and power delivery, 5-level traction control, cruise control, and Suzuki’s Easy Start, Low RPM Assist, and Bi-Directional Quick Shift systems.

The GSX-S1000GT+ returns in Glass Sparkle Black and a new Metallic Triton Blue starting at $14,099. The GSX-S1000GT continues for 2023 in Metallic Reflective Blue starting at $13,349.

The 2023 Suzuki M109R B.O.S.S. features a liquid-cooled 1,783cc, 8-valve DOHC, 54-degree V-Twin engine with 120mm bore and 90.5mm stroke. In Rider’s Road Test Review of the 2015 M109R, the reviewer said the bike had a “dual-personality motor; a typically torquey cruiser initially, it then morphs into a heckuva strong sport mount.”

The M109R has a 46mm inverted fork with 5.1 inches of travel, a hidden single-shock rear suspension, Twin floating disc-brakes with dual-piston calipers in the front and a single-disc rear brake with a single dual-piston caliper, and a low-profile 240/40 x 18 rear tire, the widest ever used on a Suzuki motorcycle.

The M109R’s engine is wrapped with aggressive blacked-out styling with slash-cut mufflers, drag-style bars, a supplied solo seat cowl with a 27.8-inch height, a headlight nacelle that’s uniquely Suzuki, and a 5.2-gallon fuel tank. The bike comes in at 764-lb wet weight. 

The 2023 Suzuki M109R comes in a deep red and black or bright blue and black paint scheme starting at $15,599.

The 2023 Suzuki Boulevard C50 and C50T feature a liquid-cooled 805cc 45-degree V-Twin with the Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) electronic fuel-injection system and a 5-speed gearbox with shaft drive.

Link-type rear suspension is shaped to mimic the hard-tail lines of a traditional cruiser, connecting a truss-style swingarm and a single shock absorber with seven-way spring preload adjustability, providing 4.1 inches of smooth and responsive suspension travel, and a telescopic front fork delivers 5.5 inches of travel.

Both bikes have wide, buckhorn-style handlebars, 27.6-inch seat height, and spoke-style chrome wheels with large valance fenders. The C50T offering white-wall tires, leather-texture saddlebags with chrome studs, and a removable, height-adjustable windshield.

Both the Boulevard C50 and C50T have a 4.1-gal tank, and the C50 comes in with a wet weight of 611 lb (644 lb for the C50T).

The 2023 Suzuki Boulevard C50 comes in Candy Daring Red or Solid Iron Gray starting at $8,909. The C50T comes in Pearl Brilliant White paint with subtle blue graphics starting at $15,599.

At the EICMA show this week in Milan, Italy, Royal Enfield unveiled a new tourer: The Super Meteor 650. Following in the tradition of the Meteor 350, the Super Meteor sits in an all-new chassis and comes in an array of color options with two optional accessory packages.

The Super Meteor features the 648cc air-cooled parallel-Twin also found in Royal Enfield’s Continental GT and the INT650, all producing a claimed 38 lb-ft of torque and 47 hp.

However, the chassis of the Super Meteor 650 is new. Created in conjunction with Harris Performance, it’s said to have a low center of gravity for stability and confidence for all levels of rider. Royal Enfield reports that the new chassis is built with long-distance riding in mind.

The Super Meteor features a steel tubular spine frame and a 43mm inverted fork with 120mm of travel, along with twin shocks in the rear with 101mm of travel. Twin-piston caliper brakes will be standard.

Also included as standard on the Super Meteor are LED headlights, a TBT navigation system, and redesigned engine covers.

There are two accessory kits available for the Super Meteor: The Solo Tourer Genuine Motorcycle and the Grand Tourer. At EICMA, Royal Enfield showed one of each, along with a standard variant.

The 2023 Honda lineup is in, including 11 returning models from five categories and the new “bagger” Rebel 1100 trim level. 

In 2023, we’ll see the return of sportbikes like the CBR1000RR, the touring-focused NC750X, the classic Shadow Aero and Shadow Phantom, miniMOTOs like the Super Cub and Monkey, and more. 

The highlight of Honda’s 2023 lineup is the “bagger” Rebel, the 2023 Rebel 1100T DCT. With a dual-clutch transmission, wind protection, and extra cargo space offered in the new hard-shell saddlebags, this model puts a different spin on Honda’s new-school cruiser platform.

And for those who love the Rebel just as it is, the Rebel 1100 will still be available in its non-bagger form, in both manual and dual-clutch transmission versions.

Honda introduced the Rebel 1100 two years ago, a bigger-displacement cruiser modeled after the successful Rebel 300 and 500. It’s a capable and comfortable all-around cruiser featuring a liquid-cooled, 1083cc, parallel-Twin engine available with either a manual transmission or DCT (dual-clutch transmission).

The new “T” trim marks the beginning of the “bagger” Rebel, only available with DCT. The Rebel 1100T DCT comes standard with a windscreen and hard-shell saddlebags with a combined 35 liters of space, making it even more practical for longer rides.

The Rebel 500 and 300 return as Honda’s most approachable and affordable entry-level cruiser models. The 500 comes with a 471cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-Twin engine, while the 300 has a 286cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. These models provide a relaxed riding position with a classic-meets-modern aesthetic.

The 4.8-gallon fuel tank is centered and low in the frame, allowing for a compact design and making the bike more responsive to rider input.

2023 Indian Motorcycle Lineup | First Look Review

Indian Motorcycles has announced updates to its 2023 lineup, including a new FTR model and other FTR revisions, plus details about the premium Challenger Elite model, and other upgrades across the board. Here’s a first look at the 2023 Indian models and new upgrades.

2023 Indian FTR Lineup

New for 2023 is the FTR Sport, a model that replaces the FTR S. This FTR sits just below the premium FTR R Carbon but above the FTR and FTR Rally. The FTR Sport features a new tank-panel design, a sporty chin fairing, and a seat cowl. It will be available in Black Metallic with Indy Red accents for $15,749 and White Lightning with Indy Red and Black Metallic accents for $15,999.

The FTR Sport will share a new 4-inch round touchscreen display with the FTR R Carbon model, offering navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. Both bikes will come standard with three ride modes (Sport, Standard, and Rain), lean-angle-sensitive ABS, stability control, traction control, wheelie and rear-lift mitigation, a USB charge port, and cruise control. The FTR and FTR Rally come standard with ABS and cruise control.

The FTR R Carbon separates itself from the rest of the FTR lineup with carbon fiber components, a premium seat, fully adjustable Öhlins gold front forks, and a gold piggyback shock. It is also the only model with the Indian script logo tank panels and finished with Cloud Siler and Championship Gold pinstriping.

All four FTR models will feature a sportier muffler and a retuned front braking system. The speedometer has been moved up on all FTRs for easier viewing, and a new clutch has been implemented, which Indian says provides improved feel and performance.

2023 Indian Challenger Elite

The 2023 Challenger Elite in Sapphire Blue Smoke Paint with Black Smoke and Titanium Metallic Smoke accents will be limited to 150 units with an MSRP of $35,999.

Indian began its Elite program in 2017 with the Chieftain Elite. Since then, Indian’s Elite motorcycles, limited to 150-200 units for each bike, feature all the premium options available along with a unique look. In 2022, we saw the first Challenger Elite, limited to 200 units. The 2022 Challenger Elite featured Stealth Gray and Black Metallic paint with Indy Red accents, inspired by American muscle cars.

For 2023, Indian has announced it will be offering 150 units of the 2023 Challenger Elite in Sapphire Blue Smoke Paint with Black Smoke and Titanium Metallic Smoke accents. For this premium bike with a unique look, you’re looking at $35,999.

The Challenger Elite will have the same PowerPlus 108ci engine with 122 hp and 128 ft-lb of torque that you’ll find in other Challengers, but the Elite is packed with all the top-notch options and extras. Those extras include three ride modes, Fox adjustable rear suspension, smart lean technology, an LED headlight and driving lights, an adjustable flare windscreen, select footboards, heated grips, a new precision-cut five-spoke wheel, and Powerband audio with saddlebag speakers.

At $10,000 over the price of a regular Challenger, the 2023 Challenger Elite is packed to the gills with premium features, a marketing strategy similar to Harley-Davidson’s CVO line.

Other Updates Across the Board

The 2023 lineup will feature a host of upgrades and paint colors across the board.

All Thunderstroke and PowerPlus models will receive a new clutch, said the reduce engine drag and provide a smoother down shift. The new clutch has a larger friction zone and decreased lever effort for reduced clutch fatigue.

The PowerPlus models will get integrated buttons on the heated seats, and Thunderstroke models will feature haptics, allowing riders to feel the button’s response when wearing gloves. The Springfield, Chieftain, Challenger, Roadmaster, and Pursuit models will get a redesigned LED headlight with a larger reach and spread.

All models with the 4-inch round touchscreen display will now be able to tie their Ride Command account from the Indian Motorcycle app or website to their bike. This will give riders access to features like vehicle health, vehicle locator, and ride tracking.

Despite concerns by some that Honda would be discontinuing its popular flagship Gold Wing motorcycle – perhaps precipitated by the announcement in July that the Gold Wing Road Riders Association was closing its doors – the company recently announced the return of the Gold Wing family for 2023.

Slated to be available in November, the new Gold Wings will comes in four different trims, three of which feature Honda’s exclusive Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT).

2023 Honda Gold Wing Family

With its hefty liquid-cooled 1,833cc horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, the 2023 Honda Gold Wing still boasts all the features touring riders have grown to love, including throttle-by-wire, four riding modes (Tour, Sport, Econ, and Rain), Honda Selectable Torque Control (Gold Wing Tour models only), Hill Start Assist, optimized cruise control, and electronically controlled combined braking system with ABS. Gold Wing DCT and Tour DCT models feature Walking Mode for creeping forward and backward and saving curb weight through the absence of a reverse idle shaft.

In 2021, a number of audio improvements were incorporated, including richer sound, optimized automatic volume-adjustment level, and a standard XM radio antenna, and Android Auto integration joined Apple CarPlay integration. Speakers that had been upgraded to 45 watts in 2021 were bumped again in 2022 to a 55-watt rating.

The Gold Wing’s trunk was also upgraded in 2021 and now holds 61 liters – enough for two full-face helmets – which makes for a combined 121 liters of storage including the saddlebags.

2022 Motorcycle of the Year

For the past 32 years, Rider has selected a Motorcycle of the Year. With the exception of two years when we made a People’s Choice selection by popular vote among readers (the Honda F6B in 2013 and the BMW R 1200 RT in 2014), it has been up to the Rider editorial team to choose a winner based on our collective experience with the year’s eligible contenders.

We ride as many of the new or significantly updated motorcycles released over the past year as possible, and we evaluate them within the context of their intended use.

Since we announced last year’s winner, we’ve tested cruisers, baggers, sportbikes, adventure bikes, naked bikes, minibikes, sport-tourers, luxury-tourers, cafe racers, standards, dual-sports, and even an electric dirtbike for kids.

Narrowing down such a diverse range of motorcycles into a single “best” isn’t easy. Our goal is to identify the one that best fulfills its intended purpose and advances the state of motorcycle design, performance, and function.

We haven’t always hit the mark. The BMW K1 we selected as our first MOTY in 1990 proved to be a flop, and the forkless Yamaha GTS1000 we selected in 1993 was the answer to a question no one asked.

Even if some of the selections we’ve made don’t stand the test of time, we stand by them because they were impressive motorcycles within the context of their eras. Others are easier to defend, like the 2001 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing, the 2002 Suzuki V-Strom 1000, the 2005 BMW R 1200 GS, and the 2017 Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight Touring lineup. 

For 2022, there were more than 60 eligible contenders. We narrowed them down to 10 finalists and one ultimate winner. 

2022 Motorcycle of the Year Finalists

1. BMW K 1600 GTL

Winner of Rider’s 2012 MOTY award, BMW’s top-of-the-line luxury-tourer got its most significant update yet for 2022. Its ultra-smooth 1,649cc inline-Six makes 160 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque, its full suite of electronic rider aids was upgraded, and it has a huge 10.25-inch TFT, an air-conditioned smartphone compartment, and other new comfort and convenience features. 

2. CFMOTO 650 ADVentura

Competing head-to-head with the Kawasaki Versys 650LT, the all-new 650 ADVentura is powered by a 649cc parallel-Twin that makes 60 hp and 41 lb-ft of torque. It has an adjustable windscreen, a TFT display, LED lighting, a slip/assist clutch, standard ABS, Pirelli Angel GT sport-touring tires, and hard-shell saddlebags. At $6,799, it undercuts the Kawasaki by $3,200.

3. Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak

The range-topping Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak’s 1,158cc Grandturismo V4 cranks out 170 hp and 92 lb-ft of torque, and its apex-strafing game gets elevated with a new Race mode and revised quickshifter. It’s equipped with a full electronics package (including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detection), Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension, Brembo Stylema calipers, and more.

4. Harley-Davidson Nightster

The spiritual successor to the air-cooled Evo-powered Sportster, the all-new Nightster is a performance cruiser built on Harley’s modular liquid-cooled Revolution Max engine platform, in this case with a 975cc V-Twin with variable valve timing that produces 90 hp. Classic styling cues include a peanut “tank” (actually an airbox cover), a round air intake cover, and exposed rear shocks.

5. Honda Navi

Toeing the line between a twist-and-go scooter and a step-over motorcycle, the all-new Honda Navi borrows the fan-cooled 109cc Single and CVT transmission from the Activa 6G scooter and the Grom’s popular design language. The 8-hp Navi weighs just 236 lb, has a 30-inch seat height, and is priced at just $1,807, making it an ideal gateway to the world of motorcycling.

6. Indian Pursuit Limited

Indian’s Challenger bagger, powered by the liquid-cooled PowerPlus 108 V-Twin that makes 108 hp and 113 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheel, was Rider’s 2020 MOTY. Touring capability gets a boost on the Pursuit Limited (or Dark Horse), which adds fairing lowers, a tall adjustable windscreen, a Touring Comfort seat, heated grips, and a trunk with an integrated passenger backrest.

7. KTM 1290 Super Duke R Evo

Known as “The Beast,” the 1290 Super Duke R added “Evo” to its name and was updated with WP Semi-Active Technology (SAT) suspension available with six modes and automatic preload adjustment, a revised throttle-by-wire system, and more. Its 1,301cc V-Twin cranks out 180 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque, and its electronics allow riders to tame or unleash The Beast as they see fit.

8. Royal Enfield Classic 350

The Classic 350 brings back the styling that made the Royal Enfield Bullet – built from 1931-2020 – such an iconic bike and pairs it with a 349cc air-/oil-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve, fuel-injected Single with a 5-speed gearbox. Available in nine color-style combinations and priced as low as $4,599, the Classic 350 is the embodiment of simple, fun, affordable motorcycling.

9. Triumph Tiger 1200

Triumph completely revamped its Tiger 1200 adventure bike platform for the 2023 model year, shaving off 55 lb of weight, bolting in a 147-hp Triple from the Speed Triple, and equipping it with a new chassis and upgraded electronics. Five variants are available: the street-focused GT, GT Pro, and GT Explorer and the off-road-ready Rally Pro and Rally Explorer.

10. Yamaha MT-10

At the top of Yamaha’s Hyper Naked pecking order is the MT-10, a descendent of the FZ1 that was Rider’s 2006 MOTY. This “Master of Torque” is powered by a 160-hp crossplane inline-Four derived from the YZF-R1. It was updated for 2022 with new R1-derived electronics, upgraded brakes, revised styling and ergonomics, a new TFT display, and more.


And the 2022 Motorcycle of the Year Winner is…

SUZUKI GSX-S1000GT+

Here at Rider, we’re big fans of performance. That’s an often overused and general term, but it encapsulates so much of what we love about motorcycles. Powerful, thrilling engines. Strong, responsive chassis – everything from the frame to the suspension, brakes, and tires. And these days, electronic rider aids that allow responses to be tailored to different conditions or rider preferences.

We’re street riders. We may do the occasional track day or school, but it’s usually to help us sharpen our skills so we can ride more confidently and safely on the street. We want performance that is exciting yet still manageable on public roads.

At the same time, we like to go the distance. Rider was started in 1974 just as the touring segment was taking off, and motorcycle travel has been one of the magazine’s hallmarks. We’ve tested thousands of motorcycles over the years, and we gravitate toward bikes that are comfortable, reliable, and versatile yet still get our performance juices flowing.

Our 2021 Motorcycle of the Year was the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, an adventure-style sport-tourer that’s lighter and more affordable than traditional heavyweight sport-tourers like the BMW R 1250 RT, Yamaha FJR1300, and Kawasaki Concours 14 – every one of which has worn Rider’s MOTY crown at some point. In fact, eight of our 32 previous MOTY winners have been sport-tourers.

And now, make that nine. The Suzuki GSX-S1000GT+ (the ‘+’ denoting the model with standard saddlebags, whereas the base GT model goes without) delivers all the performance a street rider needs in a refined, comfortable, sophisticated package at a reasonable MSRP of $13,799. It checks all the right performance boxes while also being practical and providing – as George Carlin would say – a place for our stuff.

The GSX-S’s 999cc inline-Four is adapted from the GSX-R1000 K5, a bulletproof, championship-winning engine. Tuned for street duty, it churned out 136 hp at 10,200 rpm and 73 lb-ft of torque at 9,300 rpm on Jett Tuning’s rear-wheel dyno.

As we said in our road test in the July issue, “The GSX-S engine is a gem with no rough edges. From cracking open the throttle above idle to twisting the grip to the stop, power comes on cleanly and predictably.”

The GSX-S1000GT+ is equipped with the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System, which includes three ride modes that adjust throttle response, power delivery, traction control, cruise control, and other systems. It has the best up/down quickshifter we’ve ever tested, and thanks to its street-tuned, sportbike-spec chassis, the GT+ offers predictable handling, unflappable stability, and impeccable smoothness.

Touring amenities include comfortable rider and passenger seating, 25.7-liter side cases that can accommodate most full-face helmets, and a 6.5-inch full-color TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity via Suzuki’s mySPIN smartphone app. With its angular sportbike styling, the GSX-S1000GT+ looks as fast as it goes, and the side cases can be easily removed for an even sportier look.

As we concluded in our road test, “The GSX-S1000GT+ strikes an excellent balance between performance, technology, weight, comfort, and price. Life is good when the scenery is a blur.”
