Having recently celebrated my 50th birthday, I’ve already slipped into the old guy pastime of nostalgia, feeling wistful about days gone by. Seems like just yesterday that I was the know-nothing FNG on Rider’s staff, having just crawled out of the post-Hurricane Katrina, post-divorce wilderness, desperate to turn my life around. Within my first two months, still just a clueless oaf who won the dream-job lottery, I had not only reveled in the glory of being featured on the cover of the magazine but also suffered the humiliation of crashing two test bikes.

Perhaps to get me out of his hair while he decided if I was worth the trouble, former EIC Mark Tuttle handed me the key to a 2008 Can-Am Spyder and told me to get lost. Rather than being in the doghouse, my leash was unclipped. I packed my gear, hit the road, and returned one week and 2,600 miles later.

I’d like to think I’ve grown not only older but a little wiser since then. While that last part is debatable, the Spyder has certainly come a long way since my first ride. What started out as a single model introduced in 2007 – the Spyder RS roadster – has evolved into three model families: the playful Can-Am Ryker, the cruiser-like Spyder F3, and the touring-ready Spyder RT, with a total of 10 models between them. All share what parent company BRP calls “Y-architecture,” with two wheels in front and one in the back.

As three-wheeled vehicles (3WVs), Can-Am Rykers and Spyders don’t lean like two-wheelers do. Many motorcyclists dismiss them outright because of that, but their inherent stability is what the buyers of over 282,000 Can-Am 3WVs sold over the past 16 years love most about them.

I like anything on which I can go fast and have fun. Two wheels, three wheels, no wheels – doesn’t matter. Over Labor Day weekend, my brother-in-law and I bombed around on a pair of Sea-Doo watercraft (also made by BRP) at speeds up to 55 mph on the Intercoastal Waterway in Jacksonville, Florida, roosting spray and jumping waves with huge grins on our sunburned faces. So it felt perfectly natural to come home to California and hoon around on backroads and dirt byways on a Ryker Rally.

The Ryker’s 82-hp inline-Triple runs smoothly and delivers linear power, but its dull character doesn’t match the Rally’s rowdy nature.

Introduced in 2019, the Can-Am Ryker is the youngest member of the company’s 3WV tribe, and it was designed to attract new riders. All Spyder F3 and Spyder RT models are powered by a 115-hp, 1,330cc Rotax ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) inline-Triple, and their model-year 2023 prices range from $18,499 to $30,999. The Ryker provides a more accessible entry point in terms of power and price. The base model is available with a 50-hp 600cc Rotax ACE parallel-Twin for $8,999 or an 82-hp 900cc Rotax ACE inline-Triple for $10,699.

Like their Spyder brethren, Rykers are equipped with a Bosch-engineered Vehicle Stability System, which includes stability control, traction control, hill-hold control, and ABS. Spyders have Dynamic Power Steering, but Rykers do not, which gives them a more direct and natural handling feel. Rykers also have a driveshaft (Spyders are belt-driven), fully automatic CVT transmissions with reverse, and the UFit system, enabling handlebar and footpeg position to be adjusted without tools. Accessory body panels available in a wide range of colors allow Ryker owners to personalize their machines.

On the street, the Ryker Rally is quick and responsive, but it requires muscle and aggressive body positioning when tackling curves at speed.

The Can-Am Ryker 900 has a standard ride mode, as well as Eco, which softens throttle response for better fuel economy, and Sport, which has more aggressive throttle response, turns off traction control at the rear wheel, and reduces VSS intervention to allow greater slip angles (slides).

The Ryker’s two-wheels-in-front “Y-architecture” makes it inherently stable, and VSS adds a reassuring safety net. With an overall width of 5 feet and less than 5 inches of ground clearance, the Rally is best suited for wide, fairly smooth unpaved roads.

Can-Am also offers two up-spec 900cc models: the Ryker Sport ($11,899) and the Ryker Rally ($13,899), both of which add cruise control and a MAX mount behind the rider’s seat for an accessory top trunk or passenger seat. The Sport adds a sport comfort seat, a full rear fender, and sport-style trim and finishes.

The Rally, which is designed to be ridden off-road, has reinforced wheels with rally tires, front grille protection, a rally handlebar with handguards, large cleated footpegs, an aluminum skid plate, a pre-filter for the air intake, mud flaps, auxiliary LED lights, and an Akrapovič exhaust. Instead of Sport mode, it has a Rally mode calibrated for low-traction surfaces.

Spinning the rear tire is easy off-road, but executing a big power slide requires some finesse. Thankfully, the Ryker Rally suffers fools gladly.

Our Ryker Rally test machine was clad in all-black bodywork with a white handlebar and white wheels. (For 2024, Rally models will come with Hyper Silver wheels.) Since most of the Ryker is covered in matte-black plastic, we brightened it up by replacing the standard Intense Black front and side accent panels with the racier Heritage White IV set ($399.99), which has yellow and red stripes on a white background. The body panel kit, however, doesn’t extend to the accessory Mono Seat Cowl ($114.99) fitted on our test unit’s MAX mount, which would have rounded out the go-fast aesthetic.

With its twist-and-go CVT, peppy engine, Rally mode, wide handlebar, low seat, and feet-forward riding position, the 2023 Can-Am Ryker Rally is what Dr. Frankenstein would get if he stitched together a scooter, a cruiser, a go-kart, and an ATV. That may sound a little weird, but the result is a riding experience like no other.

GEAR UP

At a stop light, take your foot off the brake pedal and pin the throttle, and the Ryker will light up the rear tire for a moment before the electro-nanny, er, VSS kicks in and the rubber hooks up. According to the owner’s manual, Rally mode is only intended for unpaved roads, but in the interest of thorough evaluation, I tested it on pavement and had a fair amount of fun. But with an 82-hp engine powering a 668-lb (dry) machine, we’re not talking Dodge Hellcat-like smoky burnouts or drifts.

Get the Rally on dirt or gravel, however, and it parties like it’s 1999. A quick flick of the wrist gets the rear wheel spinning, and if you keep giving the Ryker throttle, it will slide around until your arm gets tired. The tricky bit is correct steering input. Kick the tail out and steer to match the rear, and you’re treated to a sweet crossed-up powerslide. But kick the tail out with the handlebar turned in the other direction, and the front end will push sideways. Or you can go totally gonzo and pin the throttle, crank the bar, and whip the Ryker around in a donut while kicking up a giant cloud of dust.

Since I’m not an expert off-road rider or rally car driver, it took me a while to get the hang of things. But, like sex and pizza, even when it was bad it was still pretty good, and I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun raising hell on wheels.

The Rally likes to get dirty, so sometimes it needs a bath. When hitting a water crossing hard, the front tires hydroplane a bit, but it’s easy to control.

The Ryker was very forgiving of my mistakes, and even a few close calls were handled with minimal drama thanks to the stability of the two front wheels and the VSS, even with intervention reduced. Had I tried half the antics I did on the Ryker on an adventure bike, I would have been on my butt many times over.

Street Wise

As with adventure bikes, most Rykers will spend the majority of their time on pavement. Of the hundreds of miles I logged on the Ryker Rally, only a few dozen were off-road. On the street, the Ryker is engaging and responsive. Between the continuously variable transmission and shaft drive, there’s a bit of driveline lash when first rolling on the throttle from a stop and at low speeds, but I quickly got used to it.

Response from the throttle-by-wire is direct with no delays or snatchiness, and power builds steadily with no apparent dips. The ACE inline-Triple, however, lacks character. Smoothness is a virtue on a touring machine such as a Spyder RT, but for a vehicle Can-Am says is “designed for fun,” I wanted more liveliness, more audible rumble. Even though the Rally has a racy-looking carbon-tipped Akrapovič exhaust, it emits only the mellowest of burbles.

Riding a Ryker at a sporting pace can be quite a workout. What a 3WV gives in terms of stability, it takes away in terms of graceful agility. Whereas a motorcycle rolls into and out of turns, the Ryker must fight against body roll, with weight pushing against the outside front wheel and lightening the inside wheel. As a motorcycle leans into a corner, centrifugal force pushes the rider down into the seat. Because the Ryker doesn’t lean into turns, the rider must brace themselves against the outside peg and actively lean their body to the inside. Keeping the Ryker on a steady line through a corner while keeping its 5-foot width between the mustard and the mayo also requires muscle at the handlebar. With no hand brake lever, all braking force goes through the foot pedal, which engages the calipers on all three wheels simultaneously. It took a while to adapt, but there’s plenty of stopping power at the ready.

A low center of gravity, double A-arms with an anti-roll bar, and adjustable KYB high-pressure gas shocks keep the Ryker stable, and the VSS applies braking to the outside wheel as needed to maintain control, but if you go into a corner too hot, it will understeer and push sideways. The front suspension does a good job of isolating and damping hard hits, and overall, the chassis provides a smooth, steady ride. With three separate wheel tracks, though, it can be difficult to dodge potholes or debris in the road. The situation was even more challenging off-road when trying to avoid big, sharp rocks. With only 4.8 inches of ground clearance, care must be taken to avoid high-centering the Ryker on rises, ridges, and ruts.

Dial it back, however, and the Ryker settles into comfortable docility. Thanks to its 26.6-inch seat height and adjustable ergonomics, it fits a wide range of riders. The wide, soft seat is comfortable but lacks the support needed for a full day in the saddle. (Can-Am’s accessories list includes comfort seats for the rider and passenger, along with windscreens, luggage, audio, heated grips, and much more.) The steady thrum of the engine becomes an asset on the freeway, with the three automobile-sized contact patches and two front wheels keeping the Ryker steady in crosswinds.

Amenities on the Ryker Rally include cruise control, dual USB ports, LED lights on the front fenders, and a 7-liter lockable glovebox that will hold an extra pair of gloves and a couple of water bottles but not much else. When the ignition is turned off, the Ryker beeps until you engage the parking brake (at a stop the CVT is always in neutral). Instrumentation consists of a small orange-backlit LCD display that, by today’s standards, looks outdated. Information is limited to speedometer, tachometer, odometer, A/B tripmeters, clock, ride mode, fuel level, and distance to empty. Like other Can-Am 3WVs we’ve tested, a heavy throttle hand combined with a low power-to-weight ratio on the Ryker Rally returned poor fuel mileage – just 30.3 mpg, or about 160 miles per tank.

The Kids Are Alright

When I tested the original Spyder in 2008, it was a novelty, something futuristic and intriguing to everyone from teenagers and their soccer moms to members of the Peacemakers MC when I rode it to their bikini bike wash fundraiser in Utah. A decade and a half later, the Spyder is all grown up, having become an established, tax-paying member of the powersports community. The Can-Am Ryker, on the other hand, is young and brash, more interested in fun than respectability. And the Rally is the most mischievous one of the bunch.

Since 2008, Can-Am has provided a unique way to experience the open road with its Spyder 3-wheelers. In 2019, Can-Am, a brand of BRP Inc., launched a lighter, more affordable 3-wheeled platform called the Can-Am Ryker, which was aimed at a younger, more diverse audience. More than half of Ryker owners are new to riding, and nearly 35% of Ryker owners are women.

Also, the limited run of custom-crafted shoes match the vehicles and borrow design cues from the Can-Am Ryker, including different lines and visual cues. The shoes are purpose-built for riding with an over-the-ankle design, reinforced material, reflective surfaces, and a nonslip sole.

Harley-Davidson kicked off its yearlong 120th anniversary celebration with the announcement of the first release of new models in the 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle lineup. Included in the announcement are the CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model and six additional limited-edition motorcycles featuring exclusive 120th Anniversary commemorative paint, finishes, and details, as well as a refreshed Harley-Davidson Breakout cruiser and the new Nightster Special middleweight sport motorcycle. In the three-wheeled department, Harley-Davidson announced the new 2023 Road Glide 3 trike as well as a restyled and blacked-out Freewheeler trike.

Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Models 

The limited-edition, premium CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model celebrates 120 years of craftsmanship with what the company says is “one of the most intricate paint schemes ever offered by Harley-Davidson.” 

Panels of Heirloom Red are applied over a base coat of Anniversary Black, each outlined with a bright red pinstripe and a hand-applied gold paint scallop. Subtle details added within the panels portray the head and wings of a soaring eagle. 2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary

Additional details include Alcantara seat surfaces with gold and red contrast stitching accents, gold-tone powertrain inserts, and bright red rocker boxes and pushrod tube collars. Only 1,500 examples of the CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary model will be produced for global distribution, each serialized with a laser-etched panel on the fuel tank console.

Special 120th Anniversary paint in a different scheme will be offered on six additional limited-production Harley-Davidson models, with color and design combinations inspired by early Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Each features a classic paneled paint scheme with gleaming Heirloom Red as the base color. Panels are outlined with a bright-red pinstripe and filled with a darker Midnight Crimson fade. Additional details include an Art Deco eagle tank medallion, seat covers with red side panels and gold embroidered Harley-Davidson logo, and red fade powertrain inserts. 

This commemorative design will be offered on the following serialized models:

After being taken off the U.S. market in 2020, the Harley-Davidson Breakout model will return to the North America model line, powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-Twin engine making a claimed 101 hp at 4,750 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm.  

Other features of the Breakout include a 5-gallon fuel tank topped with a low-profile chrome console shaped to lengthen the motorcycle profile, a new handlebar riser and stainless steel handlebar that is 0.75 inch taller than the previous model, and a chrome finish applied to the rear fender supports, side covers, muffler shields, turn signals, mirrors, Heavy Breather intake, and new 26-spoke cast-aluminum wheels (26-inchers in the front, 18 in the rear), which are finished in gloss black with machined details.  

The 2023 Harley-Davidson Breakout starts at $20,999 and comes in Vivid Black or, for an additional $525, Black Denim, Baja Orange, or Atlas Silver Metallic. (see photo gallery at end)

This new middleweight Nightster features the liquid-cooled Revolution Max 975T V-Twin engine. Harley says the engine is tuned to make tremendous torque at low RPM (claimed 70 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm), adding that its integration into the bike as the central member of the chassis also minimizes overall motorcycle weight.

The Nightster Special has four ride modes (Road, Sport, Rain, or user-customized), traction control, drag-torque slip control, and cruise control. Stopping power comes from a Brembo axial-mount 4-piston caliper biting a 320mm disc in the front and a single-piston caliper and 260mm disc in the rear. ABS is standard, as is cruise control. 

Other features include a passenger pillion and footpegs, cast aluminum wheels with tire pressure monitoring, and full LED lighting. The handlebar and 5-inch handlebar riser move hand controls 2 inches up and 1 inch back to put the rider in a commanding position on the motorcycle, and the 3.1-gallon fuel cell is located below the seat to move the weight of fuel low in the chassis, which lowers the center of gravity for reportedly improved handling and easier lift off the side stand. The fuel fill is reached by lifting the hinged locking seat. 

2023 Harley-Davidson

A 4-inch round TFT screen displays all instrumentation and infotainment functions managed using buttons on the hand control array. The display supports infotainment generated by the rider’s Bluetooth-equipped mobile device. Most infotainment functions also require a Bluetooth headset and speakers worn within a helmet. 

Using voice commands through the headset, the rider can receive or place calls through a mobile device. Navigation is supplied by the Harley-Davidson App for iOS or Android downloaded into the rider’s mobile device. When navigation is enabled, the rider may select a moving map display or turn-by-turn map displayed on the screen, assisted by audio instructions through the headset. 

The 2023 Harley-Davidson Nightster Special starts at $14,999 and comes in Vivid Black or, for an additional $450, Black Denim, Bright Billiard Blue, or Industrial Yellow. (see photo gallery at end)

2023 Harley-Davidson Road Glide 3 Trike

The all-new Road Glide 3 model is a first for Harley-Davidson, and the company says the trike combines “the advantages of three wheels and a load of hot rod attitude with the comfort, convenience and style of the frame-mounted Road Glide fairing.” 

The Road Glide 3 features the Milwaukee-Eight 114, electric reverse gear, and trike-specific rider safety enhancements, including electronic linked braking, ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control – all of which are cornering enhanced. 

A frame-mounted fairing features triple splitstream vents to help reduce rider helmet buffeting, dual Daymaker LED headlamps, a low-profile windscreen, and a weather-proof rear trunk with top-mounted door and 2 cubic feet of capacity. The trike has Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels with machined details with exposed lug nuts on rear wheels and bobtail rear fenders. Choose black or chrome finish in each color.

The Boom! Box GTS 6.5-inch color TFT touch screen navigation/infotainment system powers two 5.25-inch fairing speakers, and supports standard Bluetooth connectivity to a mobile device that enables hands-free calling (requires Bluetooth headset).  

The 2023 Road Glide 3 starts at $32,999 and comes in Vivid Black. For a bump in the MSRP, you can get Gray Haze (+$900), Bright Billiard Blue (+$900), Vivid Black w/Black Finish (+$1,100), Gray Haze w/Black Finish (+$2,000), or Bright Billiard Blue w/Black Finish (+$2,000). (see photo gallery at end)

The Freewheeler cruiser-inspired trike still has a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine and electric reverse gear, but it gets a blacked-out restyle for 2023. The front end, headlamp nacelle, tank console, hand and foot controls, powertrain, and exhaust all have black finishes in place of previous bright finishes. 

New Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels feature exposed rear-wheel lug nuts, and rear 18-inch wheels replace the previous 15-inchers. 

Other features of the 2023 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler include trike-specific rider safety enhancements, including electronic linked braking, ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control – all of which are cornering enhanced. The trike has a mini-ape handlebar, custom bobtail rear fenders, dual mufflers with slash-down tips, and a weather-proof rear trunk with top-mounted door and 2 cubic feet of capacity.

Harley-Davidson Offers More Cruise Control and Traction Control 

In addition to the new bikes, Harley announced that electronic cruise control will be a standard feature for the Fat Boy, Fat Bob, Breakout, and Low Rider S models, and it remains standard on Low Rider ST and Heritage Classic models.  

The switchable Traction Control System will be offered as a new option for the Breakout, Low Rider S and Low Rider ST models.

In addition to its unveiling of two electric motorcycles slated for release in 2024, BRP has announced updates to its 2023 lineup of Can-Am Spyder and Ryker three-wheeled on-road models.

Can-Am also reiterated its commitment to growing the number and diversity of on-road riders through its “We Can All Ride” campaign. According to BRP:

  • 71% of Can-Am three-wheel owners are new to powersports
  • 40% of Can-Am riders are women, the highest percentage of female riders in any of BRP’s product lines
  • The Can-Am Women of On-Road community now has more than 15,000 female riders

Can-Am to Support International Female Ride Day

On Saturday, May 7, powersports manufacturer leader BRP and its Can-Am team will proudly take to the streets alongside female riders in more than 50 communities around the world as part of the 16th annual International Female Ride Day (IFRD). From the U.S. and Canada to Europe, Asia, and Latin America, Can-Am employees, ambassadors, dealers, and vehicle owners will ride together and celebrate the importance of female riders and their positive contributions to the industry.

This marks the third consecutive year that Can-Am will be an official supporter and partner of IFRD, and it will be the brand’s biggest push yet. The IFRD partnership is synonymous with Can-Am’s acclaimed Women of On-Road program, which addresses barriers-to-entry for female riders through rider education and mentorship. That program has been incredibly successful, resulting in nearly 38% of Can-Am owners being female, significantly outpacing the industry average of 22%.

  • In 28 other cities around the U.S., the US Spyder Ryders owners’ group is holding rides to mark the occasion.

  • In the UK, Can-Am ambassador Sophie Morgan will be riding her Can-Am Ryker with others to take part in the day’s efforts.
  • In Lausanne, Switzerland, the Can-Am team based out of the BRP office there will be taking to the streets to celebrate.
  • In Germany, the Ladies Riding Class community, which counts about 30 members, will also hit the road for the occasion.

APAC

  • In Sydney, Australia, Can-Am Ambassador Helen Chik editor of the popular lifestyle magazine Grazia will be riding her Ryker alongside others to celebrate the day.

LATAM

  • In Puerto Rico, singer-songwriter Calma Carmona will also participate in a “GRRRL Ride” event behind the handlebars of her Can-Am Ryker.

The Slingshot Signature LE is powered by a Prostar 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that delivers 178 hp at 8,500 rpm and 120 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. Polaris claims a power-to-weight ratio of 8.1 lbs per horsepower, and a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 125 mph. It’s available with either a manual or AutoDrive transmission, and final drive is via carbon-fiber-reinforced belt.

The Slingshot Signature LE rolls on three cast-aluminum wheels (two 18 x 7.5-inch front wheels and a 20 x 9-inch rear wheel) shod with Kenda tires. It offers 1.09 g of later grip. Each wheel has a single 298mm vented cast iron brake rotor squeezed by a 1-piston brake caliper, and ABS is standard. Curb weight is 1,657 lbs, fuel capacity is 9.8 gallons, and overall dimensions are 149.6 inches long and 77.9 inches wide.

The biggest news to come out of Milwaukee for the 2020 model year is the all-new LiveWire electric motorcycle, which we’ve already ridden and reviewed. Harley-Davidson has announced the wider availability of technological features that debuted on the LiveWire, as well as several new or updated models, including the Low Rider S, Road Glide Limited, Heritage Classic and three CVO models.

H-D Connect

H-D Connect
H-D Connect sends vehicle information and security alerts to your smartphone through the Harley-Davidson app.

First seen on the LiveWire, H-D Connect is a subscription-based
cellular service that allows riders to connect with their motorcycle using
their smartphone and the Harley-Davidson app. H-D Connect provides key vehicle information
(e.g., battery voltage, fuel level, available range, riding statistics and
more) as well as remote security monitoring, including tamper alerts and stolen
vehicle assistance. H-D Connect is a standard feature on 2020 Touring (except
Road King/S and Electra Glide Standard models), Tri Glide Ultra, CVO models and
LiveWire, and it includes free service for one year.

Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS)

Also seen on the LiveWire, Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) is a suite of electronic riding assistance features, including cornering enhanced linked braking, ABS, traction control and drag-torque slip control; hill hold control; and tire-pressure monitoring. All RDRS features are standard on CVO models (though on the CVO Tri Glide, nothing is “cornering enhanced”), and they are available as options on all Touring models except the Electra Glide Standard.

Chopper-style Low Rider models have been in Harley-Davidson’s lineup almost continuously since 1977. When Dyna models were rolled into the Softail family for 2018, the Low Rider got a new chassis and a Milwaukee-Eight 107ci V-twin. The last Low Rider S model, which we reviewed in 2016, was built around a 110-cubic-inch Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam V-twin. For 2020, the Softail-based Low Rider S flexes its muscles with a Milwaukee-Eight 114 that churns out 119 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm (claimed).

Radiate cast wheels (19-inch front, 16-inch rear) finished in Matte Dark Bronze, a 1-inch-diameter motocross-style handlebar on 4-inch straight risers, a color-matched mini-fairing, a high-back solo seat and black finishes on the powertrain and mufflers add plenty of attitude.

The Low Rider S also gets premium suspension components (including a 43mm USD fork) and triple-disc brakes with standard ABS. It’s available in Vivid Black and Barracuda Silver (shown above), and pricing starts at $17,999.

After the success of the Niken, the world’s first production Leaning Multi-Wheeled motorcycle introduced last year, Yamaha has launched a sport-touring version called the Niken GT, with a larger windscreen, heated grips, comfort seats, saddlebags, a centerstand and more. With neutral, natural steering feel and an incredible amount of front-end grip, the Niken must be experienced to be believed.

Following our first ride on the 2018 Niken at the press introduction in Europe, Yamaha pre-sold every one of the relatively few examples it brought to the States, and test units of the world’s first production Leaning Multi-Wheeled motorcycle were tough to come by. Although I was able to write a fairly comprehensive review of the two-front-wheeled bike based on the 140-mile intro ride, questions still remained. Namely, how does the Niken work on the wet, dirty, snotty, bumpy roads it was designed to tame, rather than just licked-clean, dry and perfectly surfaced twisties in the Austrian alpine sunshine? Fortunately we were able to get back on the LMW’s saddle recently at the launch of the 2019 Niken GT on some wonderfully varied roads in Central California. And not only did it rain all freakin’ day, I was able to abscond with a test bike to put on our scale and into the curious hands of the entire Rider staff.

My riding impressions, the tech details and features of the Niken in my First Ride Review still hold true, but know this: Regardless of your feelings about its angry-robot looks, the 580-600-pound wet weight (depending on model) of the 3-cylinder, 847cc bike or insecurities about being seen on such a weird and groundbreaking motorcycle, I have never ridden faster around a corner in the rain on a machine that leans in my entire life. In the pouring rain on the tightest, slickest, bumpiest part of snaky Tepusquet Canyon Road, I repeatedly tried to break the Niken GT’s front end loose, and failed. There is so much grip front and rear that–while it takes some time to put your trust in the disconnected feeling common to alternative front ends–once you do the Niken will simply keep leaning farther and farther without a hint of looseness or instability, right up to the 43 degrees of lean when its footpeg feelers touch tarmac. With two tires up front, should one tire slip in some dirt or leaves the other takes over, during braking as well as cornering, and road irregularities like tar snakes and rain grooves simply disappear. The sense of effortless stability from the steering and suspension is unequaled by any normal motorcycle as well.

A hybrid frame with a cast steel headstock, tubular-steel main frame and cast aluminum swingarm pivot support and swingarm result in a much stronger arrangement than the all-aluminum frame of the Tracer 900 from which the Niken gets its engine.

Sure, a good sportbike can exceed 43 degrees of lean without trying hard, even the 45 degrees of which the Niken is capable before its parallel quadrilateral support arms bottom out. The Niken and Niken GT aren’t intended to push cornering extremes, but to add a level of confidence to everyday riding and safety to riding in poor road conditions. Since it’s a full-size motorcycle, not a scooter, doesn’t have a tilt lock and must be held up at stops and parked on its sidestand (or GT’s centerstand), the Nikens are intended for experienced riders, perhaps those looking for a little less worry or stress when riding in the rain or at a brisk pace. Most of all they’re a lot of fun to ride thanks to that riding-on-rails stability combined with sportbike-like agility–every time I ride one I’m reminded of the Speeder bikes in “Star Wars” zipping through the trees in the Endor forest. And yes, you can easily share or split lanes–the handlebar is the widest part of the bike, and it’s no wider than a typical adventure bike bar. I’d still like more bite from the front brakes–although there’s an opposed 4-piston caliper on each wheel, the discs are smallish at 266mm–and while the heated grips worked well on the low and medium settings, on our test bike they didn’t heat evenly on high.

The Niken is part of Yamaha’s sport-touring lineup, and well it should be, given its relaxed upright seating. Unlike the Tracer 900 it’s based upon, footpegs are underneath the rider rather than behind, and are low enough to allow plenty of legroom. There’s a natural reach to the high, wide handlebar, which doesn’t put any weight on your wrists, and comfortable weight distribution between your butt and feet. The Niken GT takes the touring equation several steps further by adding a wider, taller windscreen, heated grips, comfort rider and passenger seats, a passenger grab rail that is top-case ready, an additional 12-watt power outlet, a pair of quick-release 25-liter saddlebags and a centerstand. Although not quite big enough to hold a full-face helmet, the semi-soft, zippered clamshell saddlebags have a slick, lightweight design to help keep the GT’s load capacity above 400 pounds. Separate waterproof liners and small combination locks for the zippers keep you gear dry and secure, and both the bags and mounting racks lock to the bike but release easily so you can take just the bags with you or remove the entire setup, leaving just a small mounting stub on either side.

All told the GT package only adds 20 pounds, and all of its components work exceptionally well. The comfort seats are plush and cozy for long rides (though they do raise the rider’s seat height about an inch, which puts me on my tiptoes at stops), the windscreen provides good upper body coverage and the centerstand eases final drive-chain service (and lets you lift the front to show off the movement of the parallel fork support arms). For more wind protection a 2.4-inch-taller windscreen is available for the Niken GT, and Yamaha offers heated comfort seats as well.

With just 16.1 inches between tire centers, the Niken’s handlebar is the widest part of the bike, so sharing lanes is a snap.

As Yamaha’s and the world’s first production LMW motorcycle, given the small number of Nikens and Niken GTs the company is offering globally (and their premium pricing), I have to believe that it’s testing the waters in the real world not just to see how well its known performance parameters are accepted, but also its unknown ones–what sort of effect might the Niken have on a rider’s attitude about going back to a regular bike with “just” one wheel in front, for example? Given its testing of more extreme LMW variations and even self-balancing autonomous motorcycles, you have to believe that the Niken is just the first salvo in a separate line of LMWs if it shows promise. Imagine its front end on an FJR1300, for example, with tilt lock as an option. Sport touring would never be the same.
