Kawasaki Announces More New and Updated 2023 Models

Kawasaki has announced a slew of new and updated models to its 2023 lineup. New models include three additions to the KLX230 family and the new KLR650 S. Updated models include the Ninja 650, the Z650, and the KX450SR.

New for 2023 is the dual-purpose KLX230. Designed to be lightweight and easily maneuverable for both trail and street riding, the KLX230 features a 4-stroke 233cc air-cooled engine with electric start and compact steel perimeter frame. The short 54.3-inch wheelbase along with the high 10.4-inch ground clearance adds to the maneuverability of the bike. The KLX230 also features front and rear disc brakes, a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, a front fork with 8.7 inches of travel suspension, and a rear suspension with 8.8 inches of wheel travel. The 2023 KLX230 S is a more approachable version of the KLX230 and features a lower seat height of 32.7 inches (compared to 34.8 inches on the KLX230). The lower seat height is due to the shorter wheel travel, with 6.2 inches of travel in the front and 6.6 inches of travel in the rear.

ABS is optional, and riders have the ability to turn the ABS function on and off. The non-ABS option is available for $4,999 in Lime Green and Battle Gray while the ABS option is available for $5,299 in Battle Gray.

The KLX230 family grows with the new KLX230SM supermoto, designed for a more comfortable ride on pavement. Featuring the same 233cc air-cooled engine and electric start as the KLX230 and KLX230 S, the KLX230SM comes with 17-inch front and rear wheels that are wider than the wheels on the KLX230. The 37mm inverted forks add front-end rigidity and give the bike a sportier look.

Following the release of the all-new KLR650 last year, Kawasaki adds the KLR650 S to the 2023 lineup. It shares the 652cc single-cylinder engine, the digital instrumentation panel, high-tensile double-cradle frame, and the LED headlight with last year’s KLR650. New to the KLR650 S is the model configurations for added versatility.

The KLR650 S also features a lower front and rear suspension. The 41mm fork offer 6.7 inches of suspension travel while the rear suspension sits at 7.0 inches of travel. The 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheels allow riders to enjoy this bike both on and off the roads. The standard KLR650 S is available for $6,899 in Pearl Storm Gray and Candy Lime Green, and the KLR650 S with ABS is available in Pearl Storm Gray for $7,199.

The Ninja 650 has been updated for model year 2023. Like previous models, the 2023 Ninja 650 features a 649cc parallel-Twin engine, a 4.3 -inch TFT display, twin LED headlights, and smartphone connectivity.

What sets the 2023 model apart from past iterations is the Kawasaki TRaction Control (KTRC). The KTRC assesses several parameters to get a real-time picture of the riding conditions. It also allows riders to select between two modes. Mode 1 facilitates acceleration out of corners by maximizing forward drive from the rear wheel, making it ideal for sport riding. Mode 2 reduces engine output when excessive wheel-spin is detected to help riders navigate wet pavement. Riders also have the option to turn the system off.

The race-ready KX450SR returns in 2023 with new Showa front and rear suspension components. The KX450 debuted in 2022 with a 449cc engine with electric start, a close-ratio 5-speed transmission, and a slim aluminum perimeter frame. The new Showa front and rear suspension components on the 2023 KX450SR feature a titanium-oxide inner fork tube that improves wear resistance and reduces friction. The rear shock offers dual compression adjustability so that high speed and low speed damping can be tuned separately. The handlebar can also be adjusted in 12 different positions for rider customization.

The 2023 KX450SR will be available in late fall in Lime Green for $12,699.

No Time To Die Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE Sold at 60 Years of James Bond Charity Auction

A Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE stunt bike used in the filming of No Time To Die sold for £138,600 GBP ($154,317 USD) to benefit the Severn Hospice in a charity auction held at Christie’s to celebrate 60 years of James Bond films.

Among the items auctioned, Triumph Motorcycles provided the Scrambler 1200 XE that was ridden by Daniel Craig as James Bond and also ridden by stunt riders Paul Edmondson and Martin Craven during production of the latest 007 film, No Time To Die. With an estimated value of £20,000-£30,000 ($22,000-$33,500 USD), the Scrambler 1200 XE was sold to an online bidder for £138,600 ($154,317 USD).

“Riding the Scrambler in No Time To Die was a privilege and certainly brought a smile to my face every time I rode it,” Paul Edmonson said.

Martin Craven agreed, calling the Scrambler “an incredible beast.”

“The Scrambler did everything we threw at it,” Craven said. “We raced it to an inch of its life.”

The proceeds raised from the auction of the Scrambler 1200 XE will go to the independent charity Severn Hospice, which gives specialist care and support free of charge to families across Shropshire, Telford annd Wrekin, and Mid Wales who are living with an incurable illness.

The live auction featured 25 lots comprising vehicles, watches, costumes, and props, many of which related to No Time To Die, with the final six lots offered representing each of the six actors who have played Bond. An online sale featuring 35 lots spanning the 25 films continues until James Bond Day on Oct. 5, 2022 – the 60th anniversary of the world premiere of the first James Bond film, Dr. No, in 1962.

LiveWire Goes Public, Now Taking S2 Del Mar Reservations

Last month, a new business combination was approved between Harley-Davidson Inc. and AEA-Bridges Impact Corp., a special purpose acquisition company with a dedicated sustainability focus. The new public group, LiveWire Inc., became the first publicly traded EV motorcycle company in the U.S., marking the occasion by ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Sept. 27.

That same day, LiveWire announced it was opening reservations for the production version of the all-electric S2 Del Mar motorcycle, the first LiveWire model to feature the new Arrow architecture and the second to join the lineup next to the LiveWire ONE, the company’s flagship electric motorcycle.

Jochen Zeitz, who is chairman, president, and CEO of Harley-Davidson, as well as chairman and CEO of LiveWire, said the merging of the two companies represents a “proud and exciting milestone for LiveWire towards its ambition to become the most desirable electric motorcycle brand in the world.”

“We believe LiveWire is well positioned to define the two-wheel EV market,” Zietz said, “and we’re excited about the future.”

According to a press statement announcing the opening of reservations for the S2 Del Mar, performance highlights of the bike include expected outcomes of 80 hp, 184 lb-ft of torque, 75-minute recharge time from 20% to 80% using Level 2 charging, and 431 lb of weight, delivering projected 0-to-60 mph times of 3.1 seconds. These specs are better than those sent out in May, when the company was only saying “less than 440 pounds” for the weight and a 0-to-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

The claimed city riding range of the Del Mar has also been bumped up 100 to 110 miles. The media statement reported that range estimates are based on “expected performance on a fully-charged battery and are derived from SAE J2982 Riding Range Test Procedure data on a sample motorcycle under ideal laboratory conditions.” Actual range will likely vary depending on a variety of factors, including personal riding habits, road and driving conditions, ambient weather, vehicle condition and maintenance, tire pressure, vehicle configuration (parts and accessories), and vehicle loading (cargo, rider and passenger weight).

The production S2 Del Mar debuts with an MSRP of $16,999 in three colors: Pacific Gray, Nightfall Blue, and Asphalt Black. Delivery of the production version is planned to follow the Launch Edition, with an expected timeline set for the spring of 2023. Priority delivery will be given to customers with confirmed reservations, which can be placed now online.

When the top-of-the-range Ducati Multistrada platform adopted the 170-hp V4 Granturismo engine for 2021, fans of the powerful, high-tech adventure bike waited with anticipation as additional models were rolled out.

Following the release of the V4 S in 2021 (read our review here), Ducati introduced the race-inspired 2022 Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak (read our review here).

2023 Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally

For 2023, Ducati has introduced the Multistrada V4 Rally, which fills the gap left by the departure of the Multistrada 1260 Enduro. Like the Enduro, the V4 Rally comes standard with spoked tubeless wheels in 19-/17-inch sizes, additional suspension travel (7.9 inches front/rear), and a larger 7.9-gallon fuel tank (up from 5.8 gallons on other Multistrada models).

2023 Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally

Among the models in the Multistrada family, the V4 Rally is best suited for long-distance, two-up travel. Its additional fuel capacity gives it more range, its windscreen is 1.6 inches taller and 0.8 inch wider than the one on the V4 S, its longer tailsection provide more spacious passenger accommodations, and its rubber-mounted passenger footpegs reduce vibration. A centerstand is standard equipment, which facilitates loading/unloading luggage and performing basic checks and maintenance.

The V4 Rally is equipped with semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension EVO, and it features two comfort features. The Minimum Preload function allows the rider to “lower” the bike when stopping and riding at low speed by minimizing the preload of the shock absorber. The Easy Lift opens the suspension hydraulics at key “on” and reduces the effort required to lift the motorcycle from the sidestand thanks to the compression of the fork and shock absorber.

Other electronic rider aids include four ride modes (Sport, Touring, Urban, and Enduro), a quickshifter, radar-assisted adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection, and IMU-enabled features such as lean-sensitive ABS and traction control, wheelie control, and cornering lights. The 6.5-inch TFT display offers map navigation through the Ducati Connect app, which supports the use of a smartphone to answer calls or listen to music while using a helmet equipped with an intercom system.

The Multistrada V4 Rally also introduces a new strategy to extend the deactivation of the rear cylinder bank, which is available in all ride modes. In addition to switching off the rear cylinders at idle when stopped (a function already available on the Multistrada V4), the V4 Granturismo now keeps the rear cylinders deactivated in other operating conditions to optimize fuel consumption and emissions. Deactivation occurs even with the motorcycle in motion. As speed increases – or above a specific power request – the rear cylinders are reactivated, and the full performance of the V4 Granturismo is returned.

The 2023 Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally will be available in North America in one version: Adventure Travel & Radar, equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection, aluminum side cases, and heated grips and seats. Introduced in 1992, the Ducati M900 – which became more commonly known as the Ducati Monster – is the bike that many consider to be the establishing shot of the naked bike story.

The Monster has seen numerous iterations over the years, and Ducati says its newest addition to the lineup, the Ducati Monster SP, is “designed to enhance fun, thanks to technical equipment perfect for those who love sporty riding and embellish style with the Moto GP-inspired livery.”

The Monster SP shares the same 937cc 11-degree V-Twin as its stablemates, the Monster and Monster Plus, with all three claiming 111 hp at 9,250 rpm and 69 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. The Monster SP also shares the throttle-by-wire system, a 6-speed gearbox with a quickshifter, and an assist/slip clutch.

Also standard is Ducati Power Launch, traction control, wheelie control, and cornering ABS. Stopping power for the Monster SP has been upgraded up front to Brembo Stylema monoblock 4-piston calipers on two 320mm semi-floating discs. Braking in the rear comes from a 245mm disc and a Brembo 2-piston floating caliper. While the existing Monster models feature Pirelli Diablo Rosso III, the Monster SP wheels are shod in Pirelli Diablo Rosso IVs.

The 2023 Ducati Monster SP also adds on Öhlins NIX30 fork and Termignoni homologated silencer, steering damper, dynamic turn indicators, and a lithium-ion battery. The curb weight of the Monster SP also comes in at 410 lb, 4 pounds lighter than its stablemates. The SP also offers a slightly higher seat option, with the high seat accessory raising the height to 33.5 inches, as compared to the 32.3-inch top height of the Monster and Monster Plus.

Following BMW’s announcement in July of updates to select 2023 models, the company announced today an updated 2023 BMW S 1000 RR with enhancements to the chassis, suspension, aerodynamics, and electronic assist systems.

“With an advanced suspension and chassis, the new Brake Slide Assist and DTC Slide Control assistance systems as well as optimized aerodynamics with winglets and a redesigned rear end, we are able to raise the RR’s performance to a new level,” Wolfgang Wallner, project manager for the 2023 BMW S 1000 RR, said in a media statement.

The new BMW S 1000 RR still features a 999cc inline-Four with a 6-speed gearbox delivering a claimed 205 hp at 13,000 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm, as well as BMW’s variable valve timing and valve stroke ShiftCam technology, producing increased torque in the low- to mid-range and increased top-end power.

However, new to the 2023 model, increased rear wheel traction in all gears is provided by a shorter secondary gear ratio through the use of a sprocket with 46 instead of 45 teeth, and intake ducts and funnels have been redesigned, modeled on the M RR engine, in order to optimize the air charge and power generation, especially at higher engine speeds.

As with the previous model, the 2023 BMW S 1000 RR has four ride modes –  Rain, Road, Dynamic, and Race – with optional “Pro” race modes. Dynamic Traction Control is also standard, but new for 2023 is the Slide Control function that uses a steering angle sensor for drifts while accelerating. The new S 1000 RR also features two standard throttle maps that are linked to the ride modes and adjust throttle response and drive torque.

The optional “Pro” modes include DBC Dynamic Brake Control, but ABS Pro is now standard with the new model, preventing the wheels from locking even when braking hard in a leaning position. And the new Brake Slide Assist function acts in a similar way to the Slide Control function, using steering angle sensors to allow the rider to set a specific drift angle for so-called braking drifts while sliding into corners at a maintained speed. Stopping power is still provided by 320mm discs and two radially mounted 4-piston fixed calipers in the front and a 220mm disc and single-piston floating caliper in the rear.

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR also still features standard Hill Start Control (optional Hill Start Control Pro), Shift Assistant Pro, and Launch Control.

The S 1000 RR was not only improved in terms of overall performance but also with regard to the chassis and suspension. Introduced in 2020, the Flex Frame, designed to increase the load-bearing function of the engine, has been given more flex, as well several new openings in the side areas.

For the new chassis, rake was increased by 0.5 degree (23.6 degrees vs. 23.1 before) and the offset of the triple clamps has been reduced by 0.1 inch. Trail was increased from 3.7 inches to 3.9. At the same time, the wheelbase was extended by 0.7 inch to 57.4 inches.

As with before, rear wheel control is managed by a gravity diecast swingarm derived from racing. Suspension and damping are provided by a central spring and shock with adjustable spring base, damping, rebound, and compression. The rebound and compression can still be adjusted by means of a 10-click scaling. The shock is now height-adjustable for enhanced tuning. For easier removal and installation of the rear wheel, the axle bushings on the rear wheel on the right side are now mounted to prevent loss, and the brake pads and the brake anchor plate are chamfered. Rear suspension travel is 4.6 inches.

Also as in the predecessor model, the inverted fork with 45mm slide tubes offers a high degree of brake stability, as well as a stable response and feedback. The fork is fitted with closed-cartridge inserts and adjustment options for the spring rest as well as the damping rebound and compression stage. Front suspension travel is 4.7 inches.

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR can be equipped with an optional electronically controlled Dynamic Damping Control DDC suspension linked to the riding modes. Suspension tuning can be individualized in all riding modes.

The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR also has optimized aerodynamics with a new front section, winglets, a high windshield, and partitioning of the lower triple clamp.

As with the previous model, the 6.5-inch TFT instrument cluster of the S 1000 RR has four available screen layouts (Pure Ride with the main details and 3 Core screens) and riders can choose what is displayed to suit their needs. As a new comfort function, the last selected screen display is retained after turning off the ignition.

The design of the 2023 S 1200 RR features a color scheme with three individual characters: the basic variants of Blackstorm metallic, Style Passion in Racing Red non-metallic, and the racing-oriented Lightwhite non-metallic/BMW M. The covers for the alternator and clutch are now black and are featured in all three paintwork finishes.

Despite concerns by some that Honda would be discontinuing its popular flagship Gold Wing motorcycle – perhaps precipitated by the announcement in July that the Gold Wing Road Riders Association was closing its doors – the company recently announced the return of the Gold Wing family for 2023.

Slated to be available in November, the new Gold Wings will comes in four different trims, three of which feature Honda’s exclusive Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT).

With its hefty liquid-cooled 1,833cc horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine, the 2023 Honda Gold Wing still boasts all the features touring riders have grown to love, including throttle-by-wire, four riding modes (Tour, Sport, Econ, and Rain), Honda Selectable Torque Control (Gold Wing Tour models only), Hill Start Assist, optimized cruise control, and electronically controlled combined braking system with ABS. Gold Wing DCT and Tour DCT models feature Walking Mode for creeping forward and backward and saving curb weight through the absence of a reverse idle shaft.

In 2021, a number of audio improvements were incorporated, including richer sound, optimized automatic volume-adjustment level, and a standard XM radio antenna, and Android Auto integration joined Apple CarPlay integration. Speakers that had been upgraded to 45 watts in 2021 were bumped again in 2022 to a 55-watt rating.

The Gold Wing’s trunk was also upgraded in 2021 and now holds 61 liters – enough for two full-face helmets – which makes for a combined 121 liters of storage including the saddlebags.

KTM to Distribute MV Agusta Motorcycles in North America

KTM AG announced a collaboration with MV Agusta to start distributing MV Agusta motorcycles in the North American region. The motorcycles will be available at select KTM dealers as well as existing and new MV Agusta stores. For more information, read the press release below from KTM North America.


KTM AG, a subsidiary of Pierer Mobility AG, and MV Agusta have signed a commercial agreement for the distribution of the iconic Schiranna motorcycles in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The deal, extending over several years, focuses on the distribution, promotion, and customer service of the MV Agusta range of motorcycles by KTM AG’s North American subsidiary. The strength of the brand and the exclusivity of its motorcycles, a symbol of Italy’s design and engineering excellence, and KTM AG’s extensive and solid commercial organization will support the growth of MV Agusta in the North American region.

The agreement is part of MV Agusta’s strategic plan, which envisions significant growth in the coming years. The KTM AG group will create a dedicated U.S.-based legal entity that will be in charge of all MV Agusta operations in North America. Going forward, MV Agusta motorcycles will be distributed through both select KTM AG dealers as well as existing and new MV Agusta stores.

Timur Sardarov, CEO at MV Agusta Motor, said he was “thrilled” by the agreement between the two European motorcycle manufacturers.

“I am confident that KTM’s extensive and professional sales organization paired with the strong appeal of our brand in the region will bring great benefits to both companies,” Sardarov said. “Thanks to our cooperation, we will create synergies that will enable us to accelerate our growth strategy in North America.”

Hubert Trunkenpolz, member of the Executive Board at KTM AG, echoed the excitement about starting a new partnership with “such a historic motorcycle brand.”

Husqvarna’s new electric minicycle, the 2023 EE 3, follows in the footsteps of the Husqvarna EE 5. First produced in 2020, the EE 5 was Husqvarna’s first step into electric mobility, designed with a focus on competition and performance to rival 50cc gas-powered motorcycles. The EE 5’s new younger sibling, the EE 3, features much of the same high-quality technology but in a smaller and more manageable package for aspiring riders just getting started.

The EE 3 and EE 5 act as stepping stones for young riders, allowing them to get comfortable on a motorcycle without being overwhelmed. As electric bikes, there is no clutch or gearbox to master, simplifying the riding experience. Both bikes produce next to no noise, making them ideal for riding in areas sensitive to sound emissions.

The EE 5 is built to compete with 50cc gas-powered minicycles.

While the EE 5 produces a peak power of 5kW, making it competitive with gas-powered motorcycles, the EE 3 produces a less-intimidating 3.8kW of peak power. The electric motors for both bikes have a slim and compact design, making them well-suited for the frames. The EE 5’s 907Wh lithium-ion battery will run for a claimed two hours of general riding or 25 minutes of power-racing with a charge time of 70 minutes. Similarly, Husqvarna says the EE 3’s 648Wh lithium-ion battery will run for two hours of general riding and 30 minutes of fast-paced riding with a charge time of 60 minutes. The charger can be plugged into any 110- or 230-volt socket.

The slim design of the electric motor sits well-balanced in the EE 3’s frame.

Both the EE 3 and the EE 5 feature adjustable seat heights, so young riders can adjust their seat as they grow. With a seat height of 23.6 inches and the ability to lower the seat to 21.9 inches, the EE 3 will be more approachable for shorter riders than the EE 5, which sits at 26.2 inches and can be lowered to 24.2 inches. The EE 3 features 10-inch wheels front and back, while the EE 5 sports a 12-inch front wheel and 10-inch rear wheel.

The EE 3 has an adjustable seat height that ranges from 21.9 inches to 23.1 inches, while the EE 5’s seat height can be adjusted from 24.2 inches to 26.2 inches.

Both bikes come with six different ride modes, so parents can adjust the power level depending on the rider and the type of riding. A dongle under the seat allows parents to lock the ride mode so that riders can’t change to a more powerful ride mode in the middle of their ride. For added safety, both bikes have a roll-over sensor that immediately cuts power and a wrist lanyard key that cuts power in an uncontrollable riding situation.
