10 things you probably didn’t know about Brad Binder

1. If Binder was going to trade places with a fellow athlete for a day, who would it be? Sticking with a profession Binder has become a world-beater in, the South African, if given the opportunity, would like to become F1 World Champion and fellow Red Bull star Max Verstappen for a day. A very good choice in the eyes of many.

2022 Ducati XDiavel Nera First Look Preview

The XDiavel Nera’s Siam Red saddle.

A mere re-skinning of an existing streetbike model is usually met with both raised eyebrows and eye rolls. But Italian design is more than skin deep. And even when it isn’t, it’s still…well, Italian.

Limited to just 500 examples, Ducati’s XDiavel Nera is a made-in-Italy design collaboration between Poltrona Frau and the House of Ducati. Poltrona Frau’s Interiors in Motion division, which works with upholstery, seating, and other leather-wrapped details, has done design work on the insides of McLarens, Porsches, and Lamborghinis. Now it lends its sensibilities to the black-on-black livery and seat design of Ducati’s newest XDiavel limited offering.

The Nera’s reworked saddle is slightly wider and comes with an optional backrest. It’s also made of Pelle Frau, a proprietary handcrafted leather. Five different saddle colors are available: Siam Red, Steel Blue, Cemento, India, and Selva. Each color saddle is accented by “X” motifs engraved throughout via laser. Buyers also get an exclusive key ring and documentation, both made of Pelle Frau leather in the color of their choice. An exclusive helmet is also available.

As a machine, the XDiavel itself is much the same beastly Bolognan cruiser you’ve known since 2011. Mechanically it’s identical to the XDiavel S and XDiavel Dark. Pricing in the US will start at $29,795 and go up from there. But lest you think the XDiavel Nera is just a conspicuous design exercise intended to show off the buyer’s disposable income, consider this new seat.

Despite the same size, the passenger seat padding seems more generous. And that backrest? Ducati and Poltrona Frau were clearly thinking of that other very Italian exercise: Bringing your campagna, or compagno, along for the ride.

BREITLING TOP TIME TRIUMPH CHRONOGRAPHS

  • An eye-catching ice-blue dial references both the Speed Twin’s Polychromatic Blue and a rare, blue-dialed Breitling Top Time from the 1970s

PREMIUM

  • A high-precision chronograph for reading time, timekeeping and tracking speed, the movement is a COSC-certified chronometer, the marker of superior accuracy

INDIVIDUAL

  • Two distinct versions of the Top Time Triumph chronograph released, with one reserved for Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition owners and individuallynumbered to match the edition number of the bike

Stylish design detailing

In the mid-1960s, inspired by motor-racing and café-racer culture, Willy Breitling set out to capture the speed-driven style of the day with a completely new take on the timekeeper. The result was the Breitling Top Time, an unconventional chronograph that quickly became the watch of choice for a sporty in-crowd of men and women equally drawn to the watch’s bold proportions.

Today that spirit is back in two distinct versions of the Top Time Triumph chronograph, with one reserved specifically for those who purchase a Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition. The core-collection version features an opalescent, vertically brushed dial. The owners-only version has a radiant sunray-finished dial. Speed Twin owners who place their watch order with Triumph by August 22, 2022, will have the privileged opportunity to obtain this made-to-order watch engraved with the number of their bike.

The highlight of both watch versions is the ice blue of their dials. This unique color has, as references, both the Polychromatic Blue Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951 and a rare, blue-dialled Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s.

Features include a subdued racing-themed calfskin leather strap that lets the hero dial shine. Breitling and Triumph logos sit subtly at 12 and 6 o’clock. Oversized mushroom pushers allow for easy control over the chronograph’s stop-start and reset functions, and a high-contrast tachymeter scale provides clear legibility of speed readings. The watches are powered by the Breitling Caliber 23, a COSC-certified chronometer with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

Another feature collectors will love: The watches’ casebacks are etched with a detailed design sketch of the iconic Triumph parallel twin engine. The positioning of this sketch is very deliberate. It demonstrates the deep layering of details on the motorcycles themselves, some of it only apparent to those who have the close association of ownership or a deep knowledge of the original motorcycles.

Dates Confirmed for 2022 Yokohama Sonora Rally

There’s still time to train for the 2022 Sonora Rally!

Begin Press Release:

The Changing Tides

With Another Wave of Safety Concerns Hitting Sonora, It’s Time to Make a Move

In 2020, the world came to a screeching halt, right as the last race bike rolled under the Yokohama Sonora Rally archway. The celebrations were muted as we all struggled to reach our respective borders before the metaphorical gates slammed shut. Flash forward two years, and what most thought would be behind us is still doing some damage – if only it were to our calendars alone. But when you’ve had 24 months to learn fluidity, how to adapt better… Survive and conquer, as it might be, then every hurdle coming your way doesn’t seem quite as high. In fact, it’s these obstacles where we find our stride and, in the case of Sonora Rally’s new 2022 schedule, where the organizers found the upside.

Any rally lover in North America probably already heard the soft announcement on Social Media that the 8th Annual Yokohama Sonora Rally, presented by Method Race Wheels, will now take place October 17th – 22nd, 2022. The dramatic shift from March to October was a strategic reaction in order to secure the future of Sonora Rally for the years to come. As a matter of keeping the locals and participants of the event, alike, shielded from current unknowns, the necessary step put a dim situation into the light. For starters, more time means more training, preparation, saving – anything which an extended deadline can relieve. And it’s perhaps serendipitous that with the new dates, our good friends from the Dakar Rally have an opportunity to reclaim their rigs from the boat, refresh and ready them for the next, then one after and finally, in the Fall, the Sonora Rally.

“Although we are disappointed to have to move from our traditional spring dates, we felt it was the correct decision based on our desire to put on the type of high-quality event our racers have come to expect. Moving to October allows us to work to secure the rally for the years to come and maintain its position as North America’s premier Rally Raid” – Darren Skilton, Sonora Rally Race Director

Whether they attend in-person, or in spirit, the rally’s many friends who have found success at the top of the Factory food chain still give their support to an intimate competition with the sole intention of elevating and inspiring North Americans (Canadians, Americans and Mexicans together) to show the international rally raid circuit what we’re made of. If historic Dakar 2020 winner Ricky Brabec, Jack-of-all-trades Andrew Short or newly appointed Husky star Skyler Howes isn’t evidence enough, then let’s put the microscope on DKR 2022 Rookie class champ, Top Ten finisher and 20-year-old Mason Klein. He, like a couple others on this list, broke into rally in Sonora’s Altar Desert, and all the many great regions that followed. This year’s event will start in the historic town of Caborca, finishing in grand tradition at the US-Mex border in San Luis Rio Colorado. Caborca and the surrounding areas of Pitiquito, Puerto Lobos and Puerto Libertad provide diverse terrain and amazing vistas. The support of the Municipios of Caborca and Pitiquito have long been instrumental in the growth of the Sonora Rally, and once again welcomes all with open arms.

Buzzing from another momentous American win in the SSV class, the four-wheel class is likely to fill up fast. At 25, the youngest-ever Dakar victor, Austin “AJ” Jones has become an unwitting Pied Piper for growing pilots in the UTV space and beyond. Humble and down to earth, like so many of our local athletes, Jones hardly has a clue at the impact he will have in this scene, let alone if he wins the T4 World Championship for a second time (in a three-year career!). It’s no wonder Desert racing kings and queens, like the Matlocks, Pelayos, Eddys Prices and Curries, have made the leap into a new arena to hunt glory by way of roadbook. Gaining so much momentum, you could hardly stop them from plowing through their adversaries. There’s just so much to look forward to over the remaining nine months – with a bit more time to work up the excitement and, for some, the courage to take on the ROAD TO DAKAR challenge which offers riders in the Moto class chance at free entry to the 2023 Dakar Rally. But don’t dust off your boots too soon! The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) has made a point to mention this subevent is not open to everyone. One important rule clarification for 2022: no previous factory riders will be eligible for the Road To Dakar prize. This includes factory riders from US desert racing, motocross and enduro racing. The Road To Dakar is meant to encourage amateur riders to follow their Dakar dream, a cause the Sonora Rally team can fully support.

Whether it’ll be the first time, the fifth time or the only time, what the organization is planning south of the border is an experience. A chance to discover your best self or face your worst. This is a competition which provides tough love for those seeking to sharpen their skills, a podium for those fighting to rise up and not one but a gallery full of memories for those trying to really live in an era so enveloped in the fear of death.

Review: Harley-Davidson Fat Bob S

Harley fans thought the world was coming to an end in 2017 when Harley-Davidson axed the popular Dyna family and married those models with the new Softail family.

They loved the handling of the twin-shock models and enjoyed the comical shaking character character of the unbalanced engine that vibrated madly on its rubber mounts.

Some may miss that. I certainly don’t.

Not since the new-era Fat Bob with its slick 107 and 114 Milwaukee engines, stiffer frame, lighter weight, plus single shock and upside fork suspension.

It is now smoother, more sophisticated, more powerful and better handling with more cornering clearance.

Quite simply the world did not come to an end!

For 2022 the only change to the Fat Bob is a “waterslide” fuel tank graphic in an oval shape with “H-D” on the lower edge and the absence of the 107 model, leaving just the Fat Bob S with the whopping 114 torque monster drivetrain.

However, improved factory settings and fine-tuning seems to have made the bike even better.

The suspension feels a little better suited to our conditions and the drivetrain is slightly slicker with less mechanical noise and neutral easier to find.

The new-era FXFBS Softail Fat Bob S cost $A30,250 when it was launched and dropped to $29,995 last year. For 2022 it’s up to $31,750.

It’s my pick of the new Softails for its menacing looks and performance.

Dyna fans may bemoan the loss of the unbalanced engine, but they will love the fact that the Fat Bob S is now a much improved performer and handler.

In fact, I have taken a previous Fat Bob to Lakeside Raceway in Brisbane’s north and startled many track-day riders as I passed them thundering out of corners on the massive 160Nm of torque that had that 180mm rear Dunlop leaving thick black lines on the track.

Harley-Davidson Fat Bob and Low Rider S at Champions Race Day Lakeside Park track day
Fat Bob at Lakeside

I sheepishly retired the bike by lunchtime as I had simply run out of rubber!

Somehow the upside-down 43mm forks, slanted single hand-adjustable shock and high-profile rubber works just fine on this bike while a similar configuration on the new Sportster S doesn’t.

Of course, cornering clearance is an issue on all cruisers, but this is a little better with upswept single-sided dual exhaust pipes and lean angles of 31 degrees on the right and 32 on the left.

Upswept pipes

You can tip in with confidence, too, because the stiffer frame means there is no wallowing in corners, even when you hit corrugations.

It also changes direction more nimbly than the tyre specs would suggest thanks to sharper steering geometry.

And the Fat Bob S rides the crusty back roads of Australia better with only a shudder rather than an earthquake shock.

I find it a comfortable riding position with a firm but well-shaped saddle although the reach to the drag bears might be a bit far for shorter riders.

Apart from being slicker, the powerful 114 engine is also more economical and cooler which is handy in slow-moving commuter traffic on a hot summer’s day.

Interestingly, Harley never used to provide power figures, only torque. But now that they have water-cooled engines on their new Revolution models, they are providing power figures for all their models.

It might be a relatively modest 71kW, but it comes in at 4750 revs and tears at your arm sockets under hard acceleration.

The hard-mounted engine also feels smoother thanks to it being 100% balanced with a secondary balancer.

The most confronting element in the Fat Bob’s styling over the past few years has been the move from twin circular headlights to a horizontal rectangular shape with rounded edges.

I’m now starting to warm to the unique LED headlight tucked inside a neat, gloss-black pillar-box nacelle.

However, I’m not such a fan of the bronzed header pipe covers and the silver “rattle-can” painted mufflers.

Like all new Softails, it comes with new keyless ignition, more comfortable seats and new wheel designs.

2022 Indian Pursuit Limited and Dark Horse | First Look Review

2022 Indian Pursuit

Indian Motorcycle defied the bagger status quo when it released the liquid-cooled Challenger in 2020. The firm wasted little time proving the PowerPlus V-Twin’s performance potential with a victory at the inaugural King of the Baggers Invitational. In 2022, Indian is back for a second helping, but this time, the company takes the Challenger’s winning formula and adds a dash of grand-touring pedigree with its new Indian Pursuit models for 2022.

Powered by the same 108 cubic-inch, liquid-cooled PowerPlus V-Twin found in the Challenger, the new Pursuit Limited and Pursuit Dark Horse pump out 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque (at the crank). While the Pursuit and Challenger share the same power figures, Indian engineers have refined the power delivery for improved low-speed drivability.

2022 Indian Pursuit

The similarities don’t end there though. The Pursuit’s frame-mounted fairing carries over the same blocky design language that made the Challenger such an eye-catcher. However, Indian’s design team adds extra wind protection to the new long-distance tourer in the form of lower leg fairings and a tall, adjustable windscreen. The team further enhances that cushy cockpit with a Touring Comfort seat and heated grips. Combined with the Pursuit’s new power-locking cargo trunk, total storage capacity (with saddlebags) increases to 35 gallons of capacity, enabling  long-haul travelers to embark on far-flung adventures.

Tech also improves cockpit accommodations, with a 7-inch TFT display and Indian’s Ride Command+ system putting Apple CarPlay and turn-by-turn GPS navigation at riders’ fingertips. Both the Pursuit Dark Horse and Pursuit Limited come with complimentary one-year Ride Command+ access, including live traffic and weather map overlays, and the brand’s new vehicle locator.

2022 Indian Pursuit

For customers fully committed to pounding the pavement, Indian also offers a Premium Package for both Pursuit variants. The top-of-the-line trim adds an electronically adjustable Fox rear shock, enabling riders to adapt the suspension to various loads directly from the infotainment control system. The electronic preload system is standard on all Premium-trim Pursuits, and the feature can be added as an upgrade to any Challenger from Indian’s parts and accessories catalog.

2022 Indian Pursuit
2022 Indian Pursuit Limited

Along with the up-spec Fox monoshock, the Premium Package includes a Bosch six-axis IMU that manages cornering traction control and lean-sensitive ABS, as well as a heated seat and integrated lower fairing driver lights.

With chrome finishes, the Pursuit Limited retails for $29,999, while the Pursuit Dark Horse’s satin black accents raise the MSRP to $30,999. In Premium Package form, the Pursuit Limited jumps to $32,999, while the Pursuit Dark Horse’s sticker price increases to $33,999.

2022 Indian Pursuit
2022 Indian Pursuit Dark Horse

Of course, Indian’s after-purchase catalog includes a wealth of Pursuit accessories such as storage and audio options for the lower fairings, various Spirit Lake Luggage pieces, LED lighting upgrades, and mid-rise handlebars.

2022 KTM 890 Duke GP | First Look Review

2022 KTM 890 DUKE GP

Earlier this month KTM announced a new look for the 890 Duke R – is known as “The Super Scalpel” – for the new model year. Both the 2022 KTM 890 Duke R and 2022 KTM 1290 Super Duke R Evo are being offered in a new Atlantic Blue colorway inspired by the KTM RC16 GP racebike. Now our friends in Austria have announced the 2022 KTM 890 Duke GP.

RELATED: 2022 Motorcycle Buyers Guide: New Street Models

As the name implies, it too gets MotoGP-inspired livery, this time in an orange-and-black combo with KTM’s “Ready to Race” motto just below the 3.7-gallon fuel tank. What makes the 890 Duke GP stand out is the orange bodywork replacing the normally all-black panels covering the subframe, which also includes logos for industry partners Motorex, Pankl, and WP.

2022 KTM 890 DUKE GP

There’s also a special orange passenger seat cover with special “890 Duke GP” graphics. The orange treatment continues with orange powdercoated wheels and orange highlights on the front fender and headlight frame.

Beneath the GP-inspired livery, the rest of the 890 Duke GP is the same as the standard 890 Duke. It features adjustable WP Apex suspension, a PASC slip/assist clutch, Continental ContiRoad tires, and a state-of-the-art electronics package that includes cornering ABS with Supermoto mode, lean-angle-sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control, and selectable ride modes (Sport, Street, and Rain). An optional Track mode adds sharper throttle response along with on-the-fly TC adjustability over nine levels.

2022 KTM 890 DUKE GP

The 890 Duke R’s 889cc parallel-Twin engine has DOHC with four valves per cylinder, and it is tuned to deliver a claimed 114 horsepower at the crank. When we tested the 2021 KTM 890 Duke, it sent 111 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 67 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm to the rear wheel.

2022 KTM 890 DUKE GP

A full-color TFT display provides a wealth of information for the rider, and it allows for convenient navigation of the various menus and settings. An LED headlight is paired with an LED daytime running light for eye-catching visibility and excellent illumination. The flat, tapered aluminum handlebar can be adjusted to four positions within the triple clamp and rotated among three positions. Seat height is 32.8 inches, fuel capacity is 3.7 gallons, and dry weight is 373 pounds (curb weight with all fluids was 405 pounds for our 2020 test bike).

Pricing and availability for the 2022 KTM 890 Duke GP have not yet been announced. For more information or to find a KTM dealer near you, visit ktm.com.

Grand Prix Commision change red-flagged race result rules

The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Paul Duparc (FIM), Herve Poncharal (IRTA), and Biense Bierma (MSMA), in an electronic meeting held on 4 February 2022 made the following decision:

Sporting Regulations Race Classification in an Interrupted Race

Previously, if a race was red-flagged and a final result declared, the result was taken from the lap on which all riders had last crossed the finish line. If a rider or several riders were half a lap or more behind the race leader, this caused the race classification to be taken from the previous lap, even when the race leader and the majority of the field had completed the next lap. In these cases, any position changes or crashes on the race leader’s final lap were rendered moot.

Effective immediately, the result of a red-flagged race will now be taken from the last time the race leader crosses the finish line before the red flag is shown. All riders who cross the finish line on the same lap as the leader before the red flag will be classified in that order, as a partial classification. Any riders who do not cross the finish line on the same lap as the leader before the red flag is shown will be classified based on where they crossed the finish line on the previous lap. These two partial classifications will be combined to provide the final race result.

This system previously applied to races that were red-flagged after the race leader had taken the chequered flag, and will now apply to all red-flagged races for which a final result is declared.
