McQueen would wear this NEXX helmet

The new NEXX X.G10 Saloon open-face helmet is a vintage motocross style that resembles helmets worn by the legendary Hollywood actor and bike fan Steve McQueen.

He was an accomplished motocrosser who represented America in the international six-day enduro trials in 1964 where he rode with a Bell Jet helmet that looked very much like this NEXX X.G10 Saloon.

The entire production process of NEXX helmets is done in Portugal and not outsourced to other countries as many other helmet manufacturers do.

They boast a team of more than 160 workers skilled in helmet shell sculpture, leather manipulation, stitching, paintwork and engineering. Every helmet has to pass more than 50 control steps.

The NEXX X.G10 Saloon also has a cool interior thanks to their X-Mart Dry technology that provides a soft, breathable and water absorbent liner.

NEXX claims it dries twice as fast as cotton while also providing extra warmth.

The interior pieces are removable to be washed and are anti-allergic and anti-sweat.NEXX X.G10 Saloon open-face helmet

It features a rear leather clip holder for goggles, the traditional D-ring chin strap, PC Lexan flat-shield and comes in three shell sizes (XS-L, XL, and XXL-XXXL).

There is no word yet on prices in Australia, but they are available overseas for €242 (about $A395).

Patent promises better tyre grip

Italian company Directa Plus has received a patent through the Chinese Patent Office for tyre technology that they say will lower rolling resistance as well as increase grip.

In most motorcycle and automobile tyres, rolling resistance and grip are at odds. Tyre companies usually improve one quality at the sake of the other.

However, Directa Plus says the patent will cover the formula which unlocks the potential of the G+ technology for the tread component, enabling manufacturers to balance the conflicting properties of rolling resistance and grip while enhancing both.

That will allow companies to choose how much rolling resistance they want to improve fuel economy and also grip for safety.

Directa Plus Founder and CEO Giulio Cesareo says their G+ graphene technology also has “a lower carbon footprint than existing technologies as a result of our sustainable and non-toxic production process”.

It can be used on motorcycles, bicycles, cars, truck and bus radial tyres.

The patent is their sixth with the Chinese Patent Office.

“The grant of a Chinese patent for our G+ technology in tyres is a first step towards exploiting China’s large and growing market for elastomeric compounds for tyres,” Giulio says.

Global market research and consulting company TechSci Research estimated China’s tyre market was worth about $A40 billion ($US28b) in 2018 and forecast the market to grow at a compound annual rate of over 10% to reach $A75b ($US52b) by 2023.

Indian develops ClimaCommand seat

Indian Motorcycle is looking after your backside with its patent-pending ClimaCommand thermoelectric technology that both heats and cools the seat.

Indian says the seat costs $A1995 ($US1199.99) and is available for their 2014-2019 Thunderstroke-powered models and 2020 models without Ride Command.

Many luxury cars have heated and cooled seats and there are motorcycles with heated seats, but none has yet introduced a cool seat to their production bikes.

Honda has also applied for a patent for a seat that blows cool air on to the rider’s derriere, but it has not yet added it to their fleet.

The Indian seat is a lot more elaborate with a surface that is actually cold to the touch, rather than just pumping cool air through perforations in the surface.

That would be great when you hop on your bike after it’s been sitting in the sun while you’ve been sipping your latte.

And it would look much nicer than an ugly lambs wool cover.

The ClimaCommand Classic Seat has temperature controls on the side and has three key elements:

ClimaCommand hot cold seatTemperature controls

  • A proprietary thermoelectric module that pumps heat away from the rider
  • A patent-pending ducting system for cooling the thermoelectric module
  • Graphene, a highly conductive and flexible material that optimizes the distribution of heating or cooling while maintaining superior comfort

Indian Motorcycle spokesman Ross Clifford says the thermoelectric technology paired with graphene material is “truly a game-changer”.

How it worksIndian Motorcycle develops hot/cold seat

Here is the official statement from Indian which explains how it works:

To accomplish conduction heating and cooling, a thermoelectric module located within the seat directly regulates the temperature. Electricity is applied by a thermoelectric module to the graphene material, causing one side of the material to absorb heat and the opposing side to dissipate heat. By reversing electrical flow, the hot and cold temperatures alternate sides. A graphene material, which is a nanomaterial created from 100% carbon atoms, is then used to ensure the heating and cooling is dispersed throughout the entire seat.

The well-cushioned ClimaCommand Classic Seat delivers unprecedented comfort with Thunderstroke models. Independent rider and passenger controls (low, medium, high) allow the rider and passenger to remain in command of their heating and cooling levels. With no perforations, the seat’s vinyl cover is highly-durable and water and UV-resistant. Passengers can add more comfort with Armrest Pads and a Trunk Backrest Pad, both designed and developed to seamlessly pair with the new ClimaCommand Classic Seat.ClimaCommand hot cold seat

It’s important to note that the ClimaCommand Classic Seat is not Ride Command-integrated. However, Ride Command-integrated versions of the ClimaCommand Seat will be available for the 2020 Chieftain and Roadmaster later this year.

The ClimaCommand Classic Seat is now shipping to dealers and available at IndianMotorcycle.com.

In addition to the all-new ClimaCommand Classic Seat, Indian Motorcycle is introducing an array of new parts and accessories for Scout and FTR 1200 models. New Semi-Rigid Scout Saddlebags allow Scout riders to pack for the long haul, while FTR 1200 riders can select from high or low mount carbon-fiber Akrapovič exhaust options, several new airbox tank cover options, new billet aluminum Rizoma mirrors, and a carbon fiber nacelle to enhance the high-performance design of the FTR 1200.

How to Choose a Motorcycle Helmet

When choosing the best motorcycle helmets, attention to detail matters. Deciding on the ideal helmet for your head has always been an uphill task. There are several factors that you need to pay attention to when buying a motorcycle helmet.

What type of helmet do you need?

The six main types of helmets are: Full faced, Modular (flip-up chin bar), Half shell, Open-Faced, Off-road, and Dual-Sport helmets.

A full-face helmet shields the whole head and features a fixed chin bar to protect your jaw.

An open face helmet leaves your face open. They cover the sides, top, and back of your head. Open face helmets are deprived of the chin bar. Scooter riders often open-face helmets.

The modular helmet is a hybrid of the full and free face helmets. The visor and the chin bar can flip up, opening the front.

The half shell helmet (or half helmet) only shields the forehead and the top part of your head. With these helmets, you are assured of excellent airflow.

Off-road helmets are engineered for dirt use i.e., motocross and dirt bikes.

Dual Sport helmets are a hybrid of full face and off-road helmets. Examples include the ADV, Enduro, and Crossover. Akin to the off-road helmet, the dual-sport offers a large visor but enhanced padding on the interior.

Safety Features

Before buying a helmet, acquaint yourself with its safety ratings and certifications, if any. Snell, DOT, and ECE rated helmets offer more excellent protection to your head and chin. Rated helmets are often expensive, but guarantee you ultimate safety.

The material forming the helmet’s shell also contributes to its safety performance. Is the shell made of fiber or polycarbonate? A hard shell is desired to provide maximum protection. The best motorcycle helmets are often safety certified by Snell or ECE.

Cost of Motorcycle Helmets

The cost of a helmet solely depends on its materials and design. Should buying a helmet leave a big hole in your pocket? No! There are affordable yet high-quality helmets you can choose from.

The price of the helmet also depends on its size. X-Large and XX-Large helmets are often dearer. For a harder shell and better interior fabric, you’ll need to invest more.

Ventilation

There’s nothing as unpleasant as riding in a stuffy helmet. When selecting a helmet, scrutinize the type of vents available thoroughly. Does the helmet have top, brow, and rear exhaust vents? If so, proceed and get your hands on it. Probe thoroughly on the vents, especially the top vents. Some designers just fix aesthetic vents that run nowhere.

A visor that can be rolled up a few inches comes in handy in ventilating you as you ride.

Size and Fitting

You don’t need an under-sized helmet just to save a few bucks. A helmet should fit on your head precisely, with minimal coercion. To get the right fit for your head, measure the circumference on your head, and find a suitable match. An over-sized helmet could be lethal in the case of an accident. The cheek pads and chin bar will not optimally protect you from fracture.

An extra-taut helmet, on the other hand, imposes undue pressure on your skull. Therefore, it’s best to fit out the different helmets at the store before making a purchase.

Usage

What will you use the helmet for? Is it riding for leisure? Track racing? Dirt riding? For bike racing purposes, you might need to consider a full face crash helmet. The full face helmets are often padded and made up of hard outer shells. For leisure riding, the open face helmets will do the magic. As you cruise around, you’ll need to enjoy nature’s beauty as well as some relaxing air, hence the need for the open face helmets.

Helmet Addons

If you are going the open helmet way, look out for the three pushbuttons. These three buttons at the front aid in hooking up a visor at a later time. Peruse through for other features such as Bluetooth compatibility, microphone hookup, dash camera slot, and pin-lock peaks.

In case you need to wear earplugs, survey for a helmet with a recessed façade around the ears. A cap clasp is also vital to deter your cap from blowing off. You should also audit whether the inner EPS liner and cheek pads are washable and moisture-wicking.

Helmet Weight

A lightweight helmet favors aerodynamics such as thrust, drag, and lift. A helmet should not impose a substantial loading on your head. You should be able to move your head optimally with zero strain. The scantiest of the shift of gravity would have lethal effects on your spine and cervical vertebrae.

Helmet Interior

What material is the interior of the helmet made from? A good helmet should be padded with a washable liner. The EPS liner and cheek pads should also wick moisture. The helmet’s interior ought to be comfortable and relaxing to the skull.

The top vents should also be waterproof. The fastener type should never create strain around your neck.

Warranty and Aesthetics

Any helmet should have an agreement that spells out the terms and conditions of aftersales service in case of malfunction. When dissecting the warranty, be keen to scrutinize the scope and maintenance policy.

Matters color, bright helmets make more sales due to ease of visibility at night. Themed helmets are more expensive than their ugly twins.

Conclusion

Helmets not only provide safety to your skull but also protect you from excessive wind. Burn rubber, not your soul. We hope you found the perfect product for you in this roundup of the best motorcycle helmets. Before purchasing a helmet, scrutinize it meticulously against the above checklist. Safety comes first!

MotoCAP ratings for more than 200 items

Australia’s internationally awarded MotoCAP safety and thermal comfort ratings system for motorcycle clothing has added 15 jackets to its list of more than 200 tested items.

The safety intitiative, launched in September 2018, is the first of its type in the world.

It has now rated 202 items of clothing, including  105 jackets, 50 pairs of pants and 47 pairs of gloves.

Latest MotoCAP testing

In the latest round of testing, MotoCAP has added 15 textile and leather jackets.

The RST Adventure III textile jacket shares the equal highest safety rating awarded to a textile jacket yet, having received three out of five stars.MotoCAP now rates more than 200 items

The Ixon Frantic leather jacket adds to the range of high performing leather jackets, having received four out of five stars for safety.MotoCAP now rates more than 200 items

Click here for all the MotoCAP jackets ratings.

International award

Last year, MotoCAP won a Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) road safety award.

MotoCAP gives clothing two separate star ratings – one for protection and one for heat management or comfort.

Clothing manufacturers’ advertising is not an extremely useful resource for protection in a crash or from the extremes of an Australian summer.

Australian Motorcycle Council Protective Clothing sub-committee chair Brian Wood points out that MotoCAP tests the whole garment, unlike European Protective Clothing Standards which only tests samples of fabrics, fastenings and stitching.

“(It) gives the motorcycle community more information when they are making choices about the clothing they wear when riding,” he says.

MotoCAP is a partnership between Transport for NSW, State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), VicRoads, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), Lifetime Support Authority (LSA), Western Australian Police: Road Safety Commission, Department of State Growth, Insurance Australia Group (IAG), Australian Motorcycle Council and Accident Compensation Corporation in New Zealand.

Testing is carried out by the Deakin University Institute for Frontier Materials on behalf of the MotoCAP partners.

Best Spark Plugs for a Harley-Davidson

A spark plug is a device that delivers electric current from the ignition to the combustion chamber of an engine to ignite the compressed mixture of air and fuel.

All motorcycles, including those from the Harley-Davidson company, require a suitable spark plug for optimum starting as well as engine performance.

Below are the best spark plugs for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Best Spark Plugs for a Harley-Davidson

1. NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug

Spark plug

These are twin cam spark plugs, and when used, they give a gain of up to 3 HP. The NGK Iridium IX spark plug has an electrode of 25% smaller than that of platinum. It is a quarter size when compared to a conventional nickel electrode. It has an ultra-small diameter of the electrode at the center, which reduces the requirement of the voltage and extends the life of the ignition system.

With the new metal shell plating, there has been an enhancement of anticorrosion qualities. Still, these products come pre-gapped. This plug is recommended as one of the best spark plugs for Harley Davidson motorbikes.

2. E3 Spark Plugs

Power sports Spark plug

These types of plugs are efficient and have smooth acceleration. The E3 Spark Plug is a branded ground electrode module that provides more efficient burning fuel of your motorbike or vehicle, thereby having more pressure inside the cylinder.

The Diamond electrode extends this spark into the combustion chamber, which brings it closer to the robust fuel/air mixture.

The initial ignition wave leaves the spark zone at supersonic speed, and the lifted edge provides a chimney impact to allow the same procedure to occur more quickly in the next round. Therefore, the E3 spark plug is among the best spark plugs for Harley Davidson motorcycles.

3. Screamin’ Eagle Performance Spark Plug

Screamin Eagle spark plug

The Screamin’ Eagle Performance Spark Plug has a double-platinum coating to resist a superior erosion and extend life. It has a ‘V’ trimmed ground electrode that reduces the chances of covering the from the side of the flame. This promotes flame propagation.

The fine wire at the center of the electrode facilitates the startups as well as the ability to ignite. It is designed with some original equipment that suppresses noise and inhibits electrical interference with other devices such as radios.

Also, it is featured with Ribbed Core Technology, which is resistant to fouling. It works excellently in application races, which require rich fuel/air.

This design of the spark plug is a unique style and is sold in pairs. It is appropriate for the modified engines inclusive of the high flow air cleaner, performance carburetors, exhaust systems, camshafts as well as the ignition systems together with the compression ratios of the stock.

4. Harley Davidson Original Equipment Spark Plug

How often should you change spark plugs on a Harley Davidson?

Spark plugs are some of the things that you rarely think about when riding your motorbike. They do not appear in your standard checklist, such as turn signals and tires, among others. However, you should not ignore spark plugs completely because they need replacement at some points for the motorcycle to continue giving you the services you require appropriately.

Proper installation and maintenance of spark plugs is key for enjoying the top performance of the bike. The big question is, how often should you replace the spark plug of your motor vehicle?

In modern motorcycles, spark plugs should be replaced after every 15,000 to 16,000 miles of riding your motorbike. However, if your bike is sputtering, running rough, or even losing power, just think about inspecting and replacing the spark plug.

If you are buying a second-hand motorcycle, you should ask the seller the last time they changed the spark plug. If the previous owner does not remember or isn’t sure, consider replacing them immediately to ensure your safety.

It is worth noting that when replacing the spark plug, you need to check its compatibility. Make sure that your spark plug is well compatible with the model and the make of your motorbike and also the type of the engine. Also, you should consider its compatibility with your fuel.

Another consideration is the functionality of the spark plug and its improvement in engine performance with regard to power efficiency, ignition time and fuel economy.

Do iridium spark plugs increase performance?

Yes, iridium spark plugs increase performance in that they produce enough sparks to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the ignition system. Using a correctly gapped spark plug and a new one inhibits early combustion or even skipped firing, which may end up damaging the engine.

Iridium is not among the great conductors of electricity, but that does not limit it in performing as a spark plug. In fact, iridium outdoes the copper version and has a service life of around 60,000 miles.

Which is a better spark plug material, iridium or platinum?

There are several things to consider when it comes to determining which is a better spark plug, iridium or platinum. Some of these factors are durability, efficiency, and reliability, among others.

For instance, platinum may be harder than copper, but iridium is the hardest of them all. Therefore, an iridium spark plug can outdo a platinum spark plug.

Again, in terms of performance, iridium performs better than platinum. Still, iridium has a longer lifespan and is more durable than platinum.

The only downside of iridium is that it is expensive and difficult to find in the market, but once you find it, be sure of working with it for a long time without the demand for any replacement. Therefore, iridium is much better than platinum.

What is the benefit of iridium spark plugs?

Iridium spark plugs have the following benefits:

1. Improve Acceleration

Do you have a problem with accelerating your motorcycle? If so, then switch to iridium spark plugs because this will improve your acceleration. There is a fast response to strangulate operation, and you will automatically feel that difference compared to other plugs.

2. More Engine Power

Every driver wants to be able to climb hills comfortably. With an iridium spark plug, climbing any hill is not a problem. It helps in improving engine performance in regard to power. That extra power is apparent in different situations such as climbing hilly places, and this contributes to giving you a comfortable touring and as well as driving experience.

3. Improve Starting and Combustion Characteristics

Iridium spark plugs have an ultra-fine center electrode that ensures fast combustion and also improves the starting characteristics of the engine. There is little dispersion and more so at the position of the spark, which makes the motorcycle stable even at low speeds.

4. Fuel Economy

Would you like to cut your fuel expenses? Iridium spark plugs have a better fuel economy. These plugs ensure there is a proper ignition, and this gives gasoline time to be burnt efficiently. These plugs do not only give you an economic benefit only, but they also provide environmental benefits.

How to Choose Motorcycle Gloves

If you are an experienced motorcycle rider, you will need to invest in a pair of motorcycle gloves for added comfort and protection. Motorcycle gloves can provide abrasion resistance, knuckle protection and act as one of the best forms of protective riding gear.

There are many factors to consider when choosing your next pair of motorcycle gloves. Some of these factors are a personal preference so you must fully look into each brand and style of the bike glove before choosing one.

Here are some of the main factors that you need to consider before purchasing your next pair of riding gloves.

1. Riding Style

One of the main factors to consider when looking for the perfect pair of gloves is what is the riding style of glove you want to have. For instance, if you want a cruiser glove you will likely be looking into a traditional style of glove, while if you are looking into a sport glove you will likely want a pair of gloves that have lots of color and even metal imprints.

2. Weather

Another thing that you need to consider when purchasing your next pair of gloves is what type of weather you typically ride in. Many motorcycle riders will only ride their bikes in nice weather to help prevent the risk of falls and accidents. Other riders may not have an option when they ride.

If you ride during wet and rainy conditions you will definitely want to consider getting a waterproof glove. If you ride during other, dry conditions you will likely want to get leather gloves for the added protection that they offer. For cold weather, choose some padded winter motorcycle gloves.

3. Size

To ensure that you are comfortable and confident when you ride, it is essential that your gloves fit properly. If you are going to buy a pair of gloves, they need to fit you properly in all areas.

Many gloves have an adjustable strap that allows for added security. You need to ensure that the gloves fit your fingers, hand and wrist. A snug fit will help ensure that you get a better grip on your bike.

4. Length of Glove

Another main factor to consider is the length of the glove you want. If you want to have a short glove that only goes to your wrist you should find a pair of gloves that offer this design style.

If you want to have added protection around your wrists in case of a fall or want to keep your hands and wrists warmer during a ride you may want to invest in long gloves. Both types of gloves are great, however, it is a personal preference of which type you choose.

5. Touchscreen Capability

If you like to use your phone while you ride, or while you take a short break, you may want to invest in a pair of gloves that have touchscreen capability. Once your gloves are on you will likely not want to take them off. It is difficult to get the perfect adjusted fit and then have to take the gloves off because you have an important call coming in.

If you use your phone while you ride you may want a pair of gloves that have touchscreen capabilities. This allows you to answer your phone while you ride.

6. Price

One last factor that every rider needs to consider before buying a pair of gloves is the price point that they want to stay within. All gloves are made and designed differently, however, there are great gloves at all price ranges. You need to find a glove that fits within your price range so that you feel comfortable spending the money to keep yourself safe and comfortable while riding.

You should decide which factors are the most important to you in a glove and find a glove within your price range that has all of the features that you care most about. This can help you find a glove you love for less than you expected.

HJC makes first retro flip-up helmet

The retro helmet fad has boomed in recent years, but this HJC V90 with bubble visor is the first we have seen in a modular or flip-up helmet.

These vintage-style helmets are usually worn by touring riders (and many BMW riders!) who are more interested in the flexibility of the practical design than in fashion or style.

That’s why most come in solid colours.

So does this. It is available in solid white, grey or black only.HJC vintage retro flip-up modular V90 helmet

The modular helmet costs €319 (about $A520) but there is no word yet on availability here.

HJC say the flip-up chin bar can be secured in the up position.

We don’t know if this means it was certified that way, but if it was, then you should be able to legally ride with the flip-up front open. Otherwise, it is illegal, even though many police officers ride with the front up!

Since it’s modular, it is practical and unlike many other retro helmet designs, it includes large air vents front and back.HJC vintage retro flip-up modular V90 helmet

Apart from retro styling and the practicality of the flip-up chin bar other features include an integrated anti-fog sunvisor, fibreglass composite shell, removable and washable cheek and forehead pads, plus Silvercool “moisture-wicking” liners with anti-bacterial fabric.

It is also suitable for the Smart HJC integrated bluetooth communication system.

Like all HJC helmets it comes with a five-year warranty which is the usable life of a helmet anyway.

The V90 comes in sizes XS (53-54cm) to XXL (63-64cm) with just two shell sizes covering the six sizes.
