Oldest Aussie toy run returns

Many Australian toy runs were either cancelled, scaled ack or held virtually last year due to the pandemic restrictions.

The oldest, longest continually running and perhaps the biggest toy run, Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run in Newcastle, was restricted to just 50 motorcycles.

This year the 44th running of the event is back to full capacity on Sunday December 5 and organisers say they are planning for their biggest toy run yet.

Thousands of motorbikes of all shapes and sizes, laden with gifts and all dressed up for Christmas, will hit the road from Stockton at 10am led by Santa’s Sleigh.

They will head to Wickham Park for a family day out with Santa, face painting, kids’ rides, market stalls, live bands, food trucks and more.

COVID-19 has made life difficult for many Australians, especially those already facing hardship or struggling to put food on the table.

Organisers say that’s why it’s important for riders and pillions to donate more toys and raise more funds for The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal than ever.

Every toy donated ends up under the Christmas tree of a less fortunate child or teenager who would otherwise go without on Christmas morning.

There will also be a $5 raffle for a chance to win a SYM Classic 200i scooter.

Click here to register free for your chance to win some great prizes and to help organisers manage attendance.

The COVID-safe event will follow all health advice to keep everyone safe.

Bikers for Kids was established in 1990 by long-time motorcycle enthusiast and community figure, Big John Young.

Big John has been awarded an Order of Australia medal in 2015 for his work with the community for children.

He has now passed the reins of the Newcastle Toy Run to his son Daryn Young who hopes to grow the run into something bigger and better each year.

Toy runs

Many other toy runs are gearing up across the country.

One of the first toy runs is the Toy Run for Father Bob in South Melbourne on 24 November. That is not to be confused with the Melbourne Toy Run which so far does not appear to have a confirmed date yet.

In fact, several of the usual toy runs are yet to confirm dates, so I suggest you continue to check the Facebook pages in your local area to see if the events are returning.

Here is what we know so far:

Despite some restrictions last year the 42nd Annual MRA Toy Run in Tasmania still had 500 bikes and they are expecting a whole lot more bikes in Hobart this year on December 4.

In Queensland where there have been few restrictions, it seems most rides are back.

The Sunshine Coast Ulysses Branch and Salvation Army Christmas Toy Run is on 14 November, the Brisbane Santa Ride is at New farm Park on December 5, the Ipswich Toy Run is on Sunday 12 December and the Towoomba Toy Run is on 19 December.

South Australia’s MRASA Toy Run is on 12 December in Adelaide.

The Bendigo Motorcycle Toy Run is on November 28.

If your local area has a toy run, please leave details in the comments section below.

Another Toy Run falls to COVID

The Melbourne-based Toy Run For the Father Bob Maguire Foundation has been cancelled due the COVID restrictions of 50 people at outdoor events.

It follows the recent announcement that COVID travel restrictions had forced the 43rd Melbourne Toy Run to operate as a virtual event.

In NSW, the 43rd Newcastle Toy Run will collect gifts, but the ride is off, while the Motorcycle Riders’ Association 41st Toy Run in Tasmania will go ahead as a restricted, ticketed event with details sent to ticket holders soon.

Toy Run For the Father Bob Maguire Foundation organiser Cate Hughes says the “tough decision” was made not only because of COVID restrictions but also to protect Fr Bob “who is particularly vulnerable due to his rare illness and age”.

However, efforts to raise funds and gifts for the appeal are still going ahead.

Fr Bob or Foundation staff will be at Scotties Garage Toy Run After Party this Sunday afternoon and there are some “mystery rides” still on which will collect funds and gifts for the appeal.

There are now three drop-off points:

  • Morgan & Wacker Harley-Davidson® Melbourne, formerly Northside Harley-Davidson®, 370 Cooper Street, Epping – Monday-Friday: 9:00am-5:30pm & Saturday: 9:00am-3:00pm
  • Bad Boy Bobbers & Customs, 97 Warrigal Road, Hughesdale, Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-5:00pm & Saturday 9:00am-12:00pm
  • Scotties Garage, 71 Miles Grove, Seaford, Saturday 5th December 10:00am-5:00pm; Sunday 6th December 9:00am-7:00pm; and Tuesday 8th, Wednesday 9th & Thursday 10th December 9:00am-2:00pm

“Although very disappointing to have to cancel last minute, I’m quietly confident that the riders, and now members of the public, will show their generosity at our drop-off points, with the added bonus of being able to accept larger toys/items that riders cannot carry eg bicycles, step on scooters etc,” Cate says.

Motorcycle Gifts For Your Boyfriend Christmas 2020

(Contributed post for our North American readers)

The northern summer might not even be over yet, but that doesn’t mean it is too early to start preparing for Christmas. In fact, you can never start too early for Christmas, as it is a major holiday that will easily sneak up on you if you let it. Along with this, there are tons of deals to be had in the summer that you won’t necessarily be able to take advantage of in the winter. And, some of these gifts would include motorcycle gifts. If you have a guy on the list that is a real hog head, you’ll be sure to want to include some of these items on his wish list.

A Garmin Zumo 396 Motorcycle GPS

If your beau isn’t riding the newest and latest motorcycle there is a good chance that he isn’t privy to all the GPS technology available today. And, that’s okay because this provides the perfect opportunity for you. This little gadget literally has everything that a biker would want or need for staying safe and secure as they wind through traffic. It’ll provide all the pertinent information about the main roads, the side streets, the through traffic, and scenic roads. With this device, your beau will not only always know where he is going, but he’ll be able to get there in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

A Good Leather Jacket

What biker doesn’t love a good leather jacket? Heck, these items are practically essential, as they not only look cool, but they’ll keep you safe in the event of an accident. While there are a number of styles and designs available on the market, you can check out The Motorcycle Gifts Your Boyfriend Will Love guide to help narrow down your options. This guide will help you determine what type of biker you are dealing with and thus help you make the perfect selection because you’d be surprised by all the subcultures out there when it comes to leather motorcycle jackets.

Garmin Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor

Tire pressure is a major concern with any vehicle, but it is even so more important when it comes to motorcycles. You probably already know that incorrect tire pressure can affect control as well as gas efficiency. So, why not help that biker on your list be the safest possible at all times? That’s exactly what you should want and what you’ll be doing when you give him this little device. This might look like a regular valve that you screw onto your tire and leave to monitor for correct pressures, but it is much more than that. It’ll give you real-time tire-pressure information along with alerts to any potential threats that need to be handled immediately.

Motorcycle Gloves

Just like the jacket, the gloves are pretty much essential. In fact, there is a good chance that the rider on your list already has a pair, but it is never too early for a good upgrade. This is especially true if you are choosing a better brand with a more sophisticated build. You can use the guide provided above to find the information that you need to help you choose the perfect gloves for that biker on your list.

How to regain your moto mojo this Xmas!

Merry Christmas and I hope you continue to stay safe and enjoy your moto mojo!

I hate to admit it, but I sometimes feel like I’ve lost my moto mojo.

I’ve ridden so many amazing roads in exotic countries, ridden so many wonderful bikes and had more than my share of exciting adventures, it sometimes leaves me feeling a bit jaded when it comes to riding my own bike in my own “back yard”!

Many of you will think I’m being a prima donna, but some times I find it difficult to motivate myself to go for a ride.

The bike is the same. The roads are the same. The riding buddies are the same.

It’s difficult to get motivation to go for a ride, especially when there is a boring transport stage along straight highways or through boring suburbia to get to the good riding roads.

It becomes too much effort, so I just give up and stay home, working on the website or reading about motorcycles.

If you ever feel you have lost your moto mojo, there are things you can do to recharge your riding batteries and get more enthusiasm to go for a ride.

10 tips to get your moto mojo back

Here are my top 10 tips for getting your riding mojo back!

  1. Dig out the paper maps, or fire up Google Maps on the computer and start exploring for detours along your usual route. Try to find new places to go, new roads, or even new cafes along the way.
  2. Get out of your comfort zone and ride a different bike. Beg, borrow but don’t steal a different type of motorcycle. If you’re into cruisers, borrow a mate’s sport bike and vice versa. You may hate it, but at least it will be a new experience and give you something to talk about with your mates.

  3. Ride with a novice or learner. Even though it may be a slower ride than normal, their enthusiasm for riding will surely rub off on you. It is also fun and a good relearning experience to impart your riding knowledge to them.
  4. Find new friends or join a different riding group. There is a myriad of riding groups on social media. They may have different routes, bikes and destinations.
  5. Take a master riding class. Even if you think you have skills, there is always something you can learn and being better at our craft enhances your enjoyment.

Track day fun even on a Ninja 400!

  6. Book an overseas motorcycle tour and let someone else impart their enthusiasm about riding and travel. You’ll also meet interesting riders from around the world and enjoy new scenery, new roads and maybe even a new bike.
  7. It may be too expensive to upgrade to a new bike, but you can always renew your interest in your bike by adding some performance parts or extra bling!

    Clean wash Ducati GT1000 justice
Soap it up and rub it down!

  8. Wash your bike. It is amazing how much this simple exercise leads to enjoyment as well as the practical side of finding things in need of attention such as loose bolts.
  9. Watch some motorbike videos, especially at night, when it’s raining or any other time you can’t go for a ride. We also recommend surfing through YouTube. Look out for the Motorbike Writer TV channel and we also recommend MotoGeo.
  10. Go down to Bunnings, get some cement and harden up … and a Merry Moto Christmas to our many thousands of faithful readers!

Last weekend for Christmas Toy Runs

After a lengthy period of toy runs in the lead-up to Christmas, we arrive at the last weekend for the charitable rides.

Toy runs do a lot of good for the community raising cash and donations (toys and non-perishable foods) for groups such as Lifeline, the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul.

Riders are encouraged to dress up and decorate their bikes in Christmas themes, but ensure they are still safe and roadworthy.

Police warn that doing high-fives with bystanders and throwing lollies at the crowd could cause a crash.

They have told us that anyone putting themselves and other road users at risk at these events “will be dealt with accordingly”.

So, no impunity at toy runs just because they aid charity!

We will announce the winner in next week’s free email newsletter (10 December 2019).Lego Harley-Davidson Fat Boy scale model

Lego leanings

Our regular Gold Coast contributor Todd Parkes is a Lego fan and recently put together the Harley Fat Boy as well as a Lego BMW R 1200 GS.

“You may not have the skills and knowledge, money or time to build the real thing but Lego of recent times have released a number of licensed motorbike construction kits based on the real thing,” he says.

Todd has been spending quite a few hours lately at the workbench in his garage building the licensed Lego motorcycles.

Todd's complete Lego bikes
Todd’s complete Lego bikes

“They are quite large in scale being around a foot long fully built and in the region of 1000 pieces in the Harley case,” he says.

“It means several hours or even days to put together — Milwaukee could build one of the real things quicker but we get the enjoyment of being able to do it ourselves.”

He says the instruction booklets contain more than 150 pages of in-depth instructional steps.

“Lego has always specialised in easy-to-read and explicit instructions,” he says.

“The bonus of the licensed kits is that within the instructional manual are several feature articles of the company and the motorcycle it is based on making it quite the collector item.”

Anyone can do it

Lego Harley
Half way there!

Todd says anyone able to follow directions, sort shapes and colours and some Lego experience can manage it with “patience”.

“I needed some of that as there were a couple of times I missed a brick here or a subtle fit there and several pages and instructions later went oops and had to backtrack,” he says.

“Building the intricacies of the bike such as the primary drive gears, oil tank, a creatively constructed finned air cleaner and even the 43-piece chain assembly make this quite the satisfying build.”

Todd says another downside is the “chunkiness” that comes with building with bricks.

“Technology and design advances have been at work though and curves are becoming a stronger feature of a Lego creation kit, ensuring that the finished build is as realistic as possible,” he says.

“The brick building company has surged in popularity from its low a couple of decades ago.

“Part of that has been by catering for the older collector generation through licensed kits such as the Mustang, Porsche, even earth movers from the CAT range.

Mecanno gets into the act

Meccano has also joined the action with its licensed and generic motorcycle kits featuring the Ducati Monster 1200S and GP Desmo.

Christmas isn’t just for kids, Todd says.

“Next time the big kid in you wants to come out and play or your real steed is grounded, pull up a stool at your work bench, crack open the box and build a kit like this,” he says.

2019 Christmas Toy Runs hit top gear

‘Tis the season for Christmas Toy Runs with three major charity events this weekend in the far north and south of the nation.

There is the 24rd Tabelands Toy Run on Saturday and on Sunday the Toy Run for Father Bob in Melbourne and the 39th Townsville Toy Run.

The latter also has a GoFundme page to raise $5000 to aid people still reeling from the February floods.

Organiser Dave Ross says many Townsville families lost “absolutely everything in the floods earlier this year”.

So they started the GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to buy more items such as Christmas trees and decorations, personal grooming for young teenagers, educational toys for toddlers, etc.

Help us compile 2019 Toy Runs list

It might seem early, but we are already compiling a list of Toy Runs around the nation and need your help.

We have started listing several below, but this is in no way the complete list. In fact, we might have already missed some such as the Great North Brisbane Motorcycle Toy Run which was run last Sunday (27 October 2019)

Click here to send details to us via email and we will add your toy run to this article.

Make sure to tell us where and when it starts, where it goes, how long is the ride and what should riders bring as gifts/donations?

Most toy runs accept gifts of toys and non-perishable foods which are distributed by various charities to needy families.

Safe toy runs

Ipswich Toy Run cops Grinch list

Riders are encouraged to dress up and decorate their bikes, but ensure they are still safe and roadworthy.

Also, the Lockyer Ulysses Branch which runs the Ipswich Toy Run has warned riders not to throw lollies or high-five spectators as it could lead to a crash.

They say Ipswich Police will film the event and fine offending riders or pillions.

We are unaware of any similar warnings at any other toy runs.

However, police in several states have told us that anyone putting themselves and other road users at risk at these events “will be dealt with accordingly”.

So, no impunity at toy runs just because they aid charity!

Townsville Toy Run

We have already published information about the 39th Townville Toy Run who have started a GoFundme page. to raise $5000 to aid people still reeling from the February floods.

Organiser Dave Ross says many Townsville families lost “absolutely everything in the floods earlier this year”.

So they started the GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to buy more items such as Christmas trees and decorations, personal grooming for young teenagers, educational toys for toddlers, etc.
