Narrow lanes would promote riding

Rather than making roads wider, new research shows that adding more narrower lanes to existing roads would not only aid traffic flow but also promote more motorcycles and scooters.

University of Melbourne professor Chair of Statistics and motorbike rider Prof Richard Huggins says the plan has some merit.

The Grattan Institute suggests narrow lanes would reward motorists in smaller cars and on powered two wheelers and encourage people to ditch big SUVs in the city.

Melbourne City Council’s future transport strategy has picked up on the idea which has been welcomed by the Victorian Motorcycle Council.

VMC media spokesman John Eacott says altering road design to include narrow lanes dedicated to small traffic such as micro and light cars and motorbikes would have a beneficial effect on congestion.

Prof Huggins says it would be a good idea “at least in Melbourne”.

Melbourne roads lane filtering more often congestion promote
Melbourne traffic

“It would make the last bit of people’s commute much easier and safer,” he says.

“We had a very informal chat with City of Melbourne a few years ago about something similar (back then a narrow lane for single track vehicles) but as there were no regulations to cover such a lane it didn’t get to square one.”

Promote small cars and bikes

The Grattan Institute report says Australian cars are getting wider.

In the early 2000s, Aussie motorists started ditching their large sedans for hatchbacks.

However, in the past decade or more, they have swung over to SUVs and pick-ups which are much wider.

The report claims these wide vehicles are causing congestion because they limit visibility and intimidate other drivers.

They say adding a narrow lane would encourage motorists to switch to smaller cars and motorcycles and increase the capacity of roads to carry traffic.

Of course, a simple solution would be to allow motorcycles to use bus lanes and bike lanes. (Motorcycles are allowed to use bus lanes only in NSW, ACT and some Melbourne streets on a trial basis.)

But there is another result which the safety Nazis will just love.

Narrow lanes would force drivers to be more cautious and slow down.Commute traffic lane filtering speed wet NSW sydney police commuting slow speeding speed limit

The Grattan Institute also suggested in 2017 that a congestion tax should be introduced in Sydney and Melbourne during peak hours within five years.

That is another suggestion that Melbourne City Council has embraced. Click here to read more.

BMW recalls big tourers over locking wheel

BMW Motorrad Australia has recalled its big K 1600 touring fleet over a transmission issue which could result in a locking rear wheel.

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time.

BMW K 1600 B bagger confirms
BMW K 1600 B bagger

Locking danger

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission points out the dangers:

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time. If two gears are engaged at the same time, the rear wheel may lock and/or the teeth of the gearwheels shear off, depending on the road conditions and the speed of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the vehicle’s passenger(s) or other road users.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for a free repair.

It’s the fourth recall for BMW this year and the third this month following the recent oil leak problem with the S 1000 RR and the Indian-made G 310 bikes and C 400 scooters over a problem with rusty brakes.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, only the Takata airbag recall has ever been mandatory.  All others have been issued by the manufacturer.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Penrite Honda ‘more than willing’ to support Reed at home

Factory organisation prepared to host Australian if he remains aboard CRF450R.

Penrite Honda Racing would be open to supporting Australian icon Chad Reed if he remains aboard Honda machinery for the upcoming S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Championship in Auckland and Melbourne next month.

Local factory Honda team owner Yarrive Konsky has confirmed that his Australian championship-winning team would support 37-year-old Reed if requested in the pair of events that will also round out the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship.

Reed revealed this week that he will be back aboard privately-operated Honda equipment at this weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas and it’s expected that he will ride a CRF450R in the New Zealand, Australian and also Paris supercross events. No confirmation has been made at this moment.

“It’s encouraging to see Chad choose a Honda to compete on at Monster Cup,” Konsky told MotoOnline.com.au. “He has also hinted that he will choose to race Honda in the other international events he competes in – it clearly says a lot about the new 2020 CRF450R. We would be more than willing to support him where we can so he can focus on being a racer whilst in Australia and New Zealand.”

The Penrite Honda Racing team has been all-conquering with American import Justin Brayton during the past three seasons of Australian supercross in SX1, this year targeting a fourth-straight premier class crown together. Honda also currently fields Brett Metcalfe in SX1, as well as Chris Blose and Mitchell Oldenburg in SX2.

A potential collaboration between Reed and Penrite Honda comes at a fitting time for the Melbourne-based squad, as it intends to contest selected rounds of Monster Energy AMA Supercross in 2020 and is currently evaluating a separate full-time 250SX West program in the US. It isn’t anticipated that Reed will have any ongoing connection to those programs.

Reed’s scheduled Oceania appearances – the series in which he is the reigning champion – will come at the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland on 16 November, two weeks prior to his annual Australian homecoming at the high-profile Monster Energy AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Equal pressure despite championship standings says Maxwell

Equal pressure despite championship standings says Maxwell

Scoring race wins in Sydney’s final round vital for ASBK title prospects.

Image: Foremost Media.

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Wayne Maxwell will approach Sydney Motorsport Park’s final round of the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) with a clear goal – to win races on his way to a second-career crown.

Maxwell has a single ASBK championship to his credit, won with Suzuki in 2013, and he will enter next month’s finals just three points in arrears of defending champion Troy Herfoss (Penrite Honda Racing).

The ever-competitive 36-year-old would have been leading the standings entering Sydney if he was to keep Herfoss at bay in race two at Phillip Island, however, the end result meant that it will be Maxwell’s arch-rival who will carry the lead into round seven. According to Maxwell, it will make little difference in a winner takes all showdown.

“I’m not too concerned about the position, because for us it will be a case of using the same approach that we have since the two unfortunate incidents at round one and also Tailem Bend,” Maxwell told CycleOnline.com.au. “I need to try to win races and maximise the points, which we’ve been able to do pretty well since Morgan Park.

“It’s equal pressure whether you’re leading the championship or not at this stage – it’s the same for everyone in with a chance. I think that whoever’s going to win the championship will have to win races in Sydney. That’s the approach we need to take, to try and win races, but there will be a lot of guys trying to end the season on a high.”

Maxwell and a wide range of ASBK riders were on-track at Sydney Motorsport Park last weekend for a low-key shakedown, in which he drew added confidence from ahead of the championship-decider to be staged between 1-3 November.

“The test was good,” he added. “It’s been the same all year that I’ve been able to turn up, go straight to a lap-time on a second-hand tyre that’s competitive and then work to make the bike better from there as we go.

“Look, there are still a few things that we’re chasing, but I enjoy Sydney and Suzuki’s been super-successful there in the past. I can’t wait for the challenge because this year has been enjoyable with a new team, trying to win races and riding to the maximum.”

While Herfoss leads the title-chase entering Sydney’s final round from Maxwell, DesmoSport Ducati’s Mike Jones – who was involved in the controversial clash with Maxwell at Phillip Island – is also within striking distance at only 4.5 points behind. Cru Halliday (Yamaha Racing Team), Josh Waters (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Bryan Staring (Kawasaki BCperformance) also stand a mathematical chance.

Metcalfe relishing opportunity of home Port Adelaide round

Metcalfe relishing opportunity of home Port Adelaide round

South Australian looking to replicate race-winning performance from 2018.

Image: Foremost Media.

Penrite Honda Racing’s Brett Metcalfe is relishing the opportunity to race in front of a home crowd this Saturday for the second round of the Australian Supercross Championship, as the South Australian looks to replicate his race-winning performance from 2018 at the Port Adelaide venue.

Metcalfe rode strongly at Brisbane’s opener last weekend, however a race two mishap ultimately denied him of standing on the box.

The former international possessed the same form in Queensland that took him to victory at last year’s stop in South Australian, where he became the only full-time domestic rider to defeat teammate and three-time champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing).

“Last year was unreal and an awesome feeling,” Metcalfe told MotoOnline.com.au. “Living in the US for so long, I never had hometown races – any time I get the opportunity to be in South Australia racing at a professional level with friends, family and fans there – it’s just special. Last year winning, my only goal is to replicate that.”

The Australian Supercross Championship returns to a traditional 20-lap main event format on a full-size circuit.

Gloves and jeans fail safety tests

Motorcycle gloves and jeans have once again scored a big fail in the independent Australian MotoCAP safety ratings while the jeans scored well for thermal comfort.

The latest round of testing includes five pair of jeans and four gloves.

Only one set of gloves scored two safety stars, while the rest scored just one.

It follows August results for seven pairs of leather and textile motorcycles gloves which also recorded a fail in the MotoCAP safety ratings.

The MotoCAP website now lists 47 pairs of gloves in its list of 144 products tested and rated.

So far, not one pair of gloves has rated a full five stars.

Click here for the full results.

Comfy jeans

All five pairs of jeans tested have scored either three or four stars out of five for thermal comfort, which is an improvement in this category compared with previous releases.

The highest overall performing pair of jeans is the Draggin Jeans Twista jeans, which scored four out five stars for thermal comfort.

kevlar jeans
Draggin Twista jeans

While thermal comfort was good, safety was another fail.

Twista scored two out of five stars for protection, while of the other jeans tested, three scored one star for safety and one scored only half a star.

MotoCAP has now tested 41 pairs of jeans.

Click here for the full jeans results.

No comfort ratings

The world’s first safety and comfort ratings system for motorcycle clothing provides comfort ratings for thermal comfort and waterproofing on jackets and pants, but not gloves.

That is despite some of the gloves tested having perforations for airflow.

It also comes as the latest Canstar Blue customer satisfaction research found Baby Boomers are more likely to choose comfortable motorcycle gloves while Millennial riders buy for style.

Transport for NSW says that to measure for comfort a large square of fabric must be obtained.

“There is not enough material in a glove to obtain a sample for the thermal comfort measure,” they say.

However, they do test for waterproofing and three pairs of gloves were tested because they were advertised as having this feature.

The highest performing pair are the DriRider Apex 2 unisex gloves, which received a score of eight out of ten for water resistance.

Transport for NSW says there has been “interest from some manufacturers to have their items rated”.

However, all gear rated so far has been obtained through a secretive buying system to guarantee integrity.

The 63-year-old male rider suffered a severely injured foot.

Dzikunu appeared in Waverely Local Court on Wednesday (16 October 2019) where she was granted continuing conditional bail.

She will return to court on November 12 for sentencing.

Negligent penalty

The driver could face a $2,200 fine and/or imprisonment for up to nine months if it is a first-time offence.

NSW Police say that about 3pm on September 1 a Toyota Aurion was turning right from a driveway on to King Street, Randwick, when it collided with the motorcycle heading east.

The rider was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Dzikunu stopped after the crash and spoke with police.

About 7.50pm the following day Dzikunu attended Maroubra Police Station where she was charged with negligent driving.

Driveway crashes

This is yet another incident of a crash where a vehicle is turning into or coming out of a driveway.

Earlier this month a 51-year-old man died when his motorcycle was hit by a 4WD attempting to turn into a driveway in Parkinson, south of Brisbane.

Most accidents happen close to home.

It seems motorists switch off as they get near home, or don’t switch on until they have driven away from home.

Riders should always be switched on.

They should be especially aware when riding in the suburbs or in the country past driveways.

A particularly deadly driveway scenario can occur on country roads where a vehicle slows without indicating.

The following rider assumes the driver is pulling over, so they overtake just as the driver decides to turn across their path into their driveway.

The result can be fatal.

Meanwhile, F 850 R patent images have been leaked ahead of its tipped unveiling at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in a couple of weeks along with their new R 18 cruiser.

Apart from the new engine, the mages shows the bike has a new swingarm, new frame, bodywork, instrument panel, fuel tank and smaller exhaust now on the left.

We expect the engine may be differently tuned for more midrange oomph than the F 850 GS.BMW F 850 R patent image

Dual SX2 champion Jackson Richardson is hopeful of racing the night show at Port Adelaide’s second round of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship this weekend after suffering multiple foot injuries in a qualifying crash at Brisbane.

The Honda-mounted privateer was forced to eject while negotiating a rhythm section during the opening qualifying session of the season, the impact upon landing breaking all five toes on his right foot.

The popular Queenslander, who continued to ride during Brisbane’s night show before an error off the start in his heat race denied him of transferring to the SX1 main events, will attempt to ride in South Australia, where he’ll evaluate the pain of the injury during the event’s practice session.

“I misjudged one of the rhythms and gave it a bit more gas than I anticipated, the front-end came up – and it was right up – it all happened so quickly, so I thought the best thing to do was to let go and try and land on my feet,” Richardson explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “My right leg stuck in the ground when I landed – my foot just folded back a bit.

“The short story is I’ve broken all my toes – it’s not actually on my toes, but it’s like the knuckles on my foot. Right now, it’s gotten better since the weekend, but I’m just waiting to see how it feels by Saturday. I’m just going to rest it in the next couple of days and see how it feels coming into the weekend.

“I’ll make the call around practice, because I rode with it a bit on the weekend, so I know I can ride with it. I’ve just got to find a way to get rid of the pain a bit – I’ll figure it out.”

Richardson has pulled together a list of sponsors together for his rookie season in the premier class, attracting energy drink giant Rockstar Energy as a major backer of his efforts.
