Criminal trial for head-on bike crash

A daughter of renowned neurosurgeon Charlie Teo will face a criminal trial later this month over a head-on crash with former Comanchero boss William “Jock” Ross in September 2019.

NSW Police will allege Nicola Annabel Teo, 24, was driving her LandCruiser on the wrong side of the road for 200m before crashing head-on into a Harley-Davidson near Wiseman’s Ferry, NSW, on 26 September 2019.

The bike was being ridden by former Comanchero William “Jock” Ross, 76, who suffered extensive, head leg and internal injuries and still walks with the aid of a crutch.

Teo was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving, not driving on the left hand side of the road and not giving particulars to the police.

Criminal trial

The matter has proceeded through the Windsor Local Court before being moved to the Penrith Local Court where in February Teo was committed to stand a criminal trial.

The arraignment for the trial  was set last week and will be heard in Penrith on 26 June 2020. An arraignment is the first stage of a criminal trial where the indictment is read out.

If found guilty, Teo could face a substantial custodial sentence.

Police are expected to provide the court with CCTV footage, witness statements and physical evidence.

Teo is currently on conditional bail.

Ross, a Glasgow-born former soldier and Rural Fire Service volunteer, says “god was looking down” on him on the day of the crash.

He was one of five founders of the Comancheros on the New South Wales Central Coast in 1966 and was ‘supreme commander’ when they were involved in the 1984 Milperra Massacre.

Four Comancheros, two Bandidos and a 14-year-old girl died in the infamous shootout.

Ross received gunshot to the head and suffers permanent vision loss and a brain injury.

He was jailed for murder in 1987 over his role in instigating the massacre and was released in 1992 after serving five years.

Are police vilifying bikies?

Police claiming all bikies are criminals is vilifying them in a similar way as saying prostitutes cannot be rape victims, says former detective and now Bond Uni criminology lecturer Terry Goldsworthy.

His comments follow the discovery of the body of Comanchero member Shane Ross at a Gold Coast park.

Terry says police commentary over Ross’s alleged murder represent vilification.

Queensland Police Superintendent Brendan Smith is quoted as saying “bikie lifestyle carries its own risk”.

“Anyone who thinks a bikie is a motorcycle enthusiast is kidding themselves – they are criminals and criminal behaviour is hazardous,” Supt Smith is quoted as saying.

Terry says this kind of statement creates “obvious” problems.

“The data clearly tells us that bikies are not all criminals,” he says.

“They generally do not carry out criminal activity within the auspices of the gang.

“Being a criminal does not mean that you should be treated any less as a victim.

“This kind of thought process harks back to the logic that a prostitute cannot be raped, or the short skirt justification for rape etc.

“When you vilify the status of the victim you are intentionally suggesting that they are somehow to blame for the offence committed against them and the act is minimised. Every victim deserves to be treated the same.”

In 2017, Terry also claimed the tough, so-called “anti-bikie” VLAD laws in Queensland were not the success the police claimed.

As we found during the height of the original VLAD laws, riders wearing club “colours” were mistakenly vilified as “outlaw bikies” by both the public and police.

Vilifying anyone because of their association is not only careless, but can be dangerous.

Criminals should only be classed as criminal for their actions, not because of their membership of a group.

Teo appears in head-on biker crash

A daughter of renowned neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has appeared in Windsor Local Court today over a head-on crash with a motorcycle ridden by former Comanchero boss William “Jock” Ross last month.

Nicola Annabel Teo, 24, was again granted bail and the matter was adjourned until December 12.

Police are expected to provide the court with CCTV footage, witness statements and physical evidence. They are believed to be seeking a custodial sentence if Teo is found guilty.

Police will alleged she was driving a Landcruiser on the wrong side of the road when she crashed head-on into a Ross, 76, near Wiseman’s Ferry, NSW, on 26 September 2019.

Ross remains in Westmead Hospital in a stable condition with leg and internal injuries.

Teo faces charges of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, not keeping left of a dividing line and not giving particulars to police.

Teo was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. She was then taken to Windsor Police Station where she was interviewed by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit and later charged

Ross was a former Commanchero president who instigated the infamous Milperra Massacre on Father’s Day in 1984, in which seven people were killed.

He was shot and jailed for more than five years. He later left the club and is now a Rural Fire Service captain and grandfather of 12.Jock Ross head on crash
