Jonathan Rea extends contract with KRT

Jonathan Rea

I am super happy to sign a new contract with Kawasaki and KRT. What we have achieved together is incredible. Our success is driven by a great team and of course the base of the project – our Ninja ZX-10RR. I will keep working hard, together with my crew, the engineers at KHI to be in the best condition every single race. This period away from racing has reignited a burning desire to keep winning and continue to improve my skills and the package of our bike. Racing never stands still and all the riders and manufactures are continuing to improve – we must do the same. Now we can fully focus on our 2020 WorldSBK season where racing will restart soon. I want to thank Kawasaki, the team and all my sponsors for their continued support and this great opportunity.

Rea has won five consecutive WorldSBK championships as a KRT rider, starting in his first Kawasaki year in 2015. The most successful WorldSBK racer in history, the vast majority of Jonathan’s championship points and race wins have been earned while riding Ninja ZX-10R and ZX-10RR machinery creating a legend in the process.

KRT Team Manager – Guim Roda

Everyone in the team is delighted that Jonathan will be with us again. In racing we cannot assume anything until it is completed so we are very happy that JR65 has confirmed his future with Kawasaki and us. Everyone involved understands that this is a long-term project and that continuity and success go hand-in-hand. As a rider Jonathan has incredible talents that are very rare. For sure, to keep him as part of KRT gives us a chance to create yet more WorldSBK and racing history. His pit crew and everyone at KRT are delighted to continue this hugely rewarding professional and personal journey together.

Rea’s competitive nature is as strong as ever as he goes for title number six. Signing his new contract demonstrates his intention to build on and extend his winning streak well beyond this current season.

Jonathan’s ambition is as sharp as ever, especially after confirmation of his new contract with the most successful modern day WorldSBK manufacturer and team in the paddock. His close connection with Kawasaki and KRT is now globally understood and accepted, and in many ways he has become “the face of Kawasaki racing”.

The full support of his wife Tatia, his children and his entire family have been an important element throughout his glittering career, during all the good and more challenging times. The mutually beneficial relationship with his team, one which Jonathan has helped nurture, is an integral part of their combined success.

Steve Guttridge – KME Racing Manager

Since Jonathan signed his first deal to race with us in 2015 it has been a dream partnership. Kawasaki as a group had our full focus on extending our relationship into the future. This season, his sixth with us, means that JR is very much part of the Kawasaki family and his record-breaking partnership with the Ninja is revered by our competition and has amazed our fans worldwide. Jonathan – together with his great crew, the team and our engineers – once more has the perfect combination for success. JR’s professionalism, approach to racing – and particularly his mentality – have helped us as a manufacturer to define our blueprint to racing success. Together we aim to continue rewriting the history books and breaking records together. The whole Kawasaki family and Kawasaki fans worldwide welcome the new multi-year agreement with Jonathan and we are excited to witness the next chapter of this amazing story unfold.”

With current championship leader Alex Lowes already signed with Kawasaki beyond 2020 KRT has moved early in its rider choices for the next era of its overall WorldSBK campaign.

Motorcycle Gifts For Your Boyfriend Christmas 2020

(Contributed post for our North American readers)

The northern summer might not even be over yet, but that doesn’t mean it is too early to start preparing for Christmas. In fact, you can never start too early for Christmas, as it is a major holiday that will easily sneak up on you if you let it. Along with this, there are tons of deals to be had in the summer that you won’t necessarily be able to take advantage of in the winter. And, some of these gifts would include motorcycle gifts. If you have a guy on the list that is a real hog head, you’ll be sure to want to include some of these items on his wish list.

A Garmin Zumo 396 Motorcycle GPS

If your beau isn’t riding the newest and latest motorcycle there is a good chance that he isn’t privy to all the GPS technology available today. And, that’s okay because this provides the perfect opportunity for you. This little gadget literally has everything that a biker would want or need for staying safe and secure as they wind through traffic. It’ll provide all the pertinent information about the main roads, the side streets, the through traffic, and scenic roads. With this device, your beau will not only always know where he is going, but he’ll be able to get there in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

A Good Leather Jacket

What biker doesn’t love a good leather jacket? Heck, these items are practically essential, as they not only look cool, but they’ll keep you safe in the event of an accident. While there are a number of styles and designs available on the market, you can check out The Motorcycle Gifts Your Boyfriend Will Love guide to help narrow down your options. This guide will help you determine what type of biker you are dealing with and thus help you make the perfect selection because you’d be surprised by all the subcultures out there when it comes to leather motorcycle jackets.

Garmin Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor

Tire pressure is a major concern with any vehicle, but it is even so more important when it comes to motorcycles. You probably already know that incorrect tire pressure can affect control as well as gas efficiency. So, why not help that biker on your list be the safest possible at all times? That’s exactly what you should want and what you’ll be doing when you give him this little device. This might look like a regular valve that you screw onto your tire and leave to monitor for correct pressures, but it is much more than that. It’ll give you real-time tire-pressure information along with alerts to any potential threats that need to be handled immediately.

Motorcycle Gloves

Just like the jacket, the gloves are pretty much essential. In fact, there is a good chance that the rider on your list already has a pair, but it is never too early for a good upgrade. This is especially true if you are choosing a better brand with a more sophisticated build. You can use the guide provided above to find the information that you need to help you choose the perfect gloves for that biker on your list.

Officer dies in motorcycle crash with ute

A utility driver who allegedly ran a red light and hit a motorcycle killing the rider, a police officer riding home from duty yesterday (18 June 2020), appeared in a Sydney court today.

Tommy Balla, 37, of The Ponds, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

The rider was Constable Aaron Vidal, 28, who was travelling home to Bligh Park after completing his duties at Sydney City Police Area Command.

NSW Police say the crash occurred at the intersection of Windsor and Schofields Roads, Rouse Hill, just before 5.45pm.

Paramedics found Aaron critically injured and started CPR, but sadly he died at the scene.

Balla was uninjured and taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later charged, refused bail overnight and appeared in Blacktown Local Court today where police alleged Balla drove through a red light.

The matter was adjourned to 14 August 2020 with Balla released on conditional bail.

NSW Police issued this statement about the officer:nsw cops police Horror bike crashes in two states lying seeking dubbo overnight bail negligent SUV young national park fatal knocking unlicensed guilty stolen

Constable Vidal attested as part of class ‘332’ on Friday 8 December 2017, after which he commenced duties as a probationary constable at Sydney City. He was confirmed as a constable in December 2018.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has extended his condolences to the Vidal family on behalf of the NSW Police Force.

“My thoughts are with Aaron’s family and fiancée, as well as his current and former colleagues at this difficult time,” Commissioner Fuller said.

“Aaron was one of six siblings and worked alongside his father, Chief Inspector David Vidal, at Sydney City.

“Dave has always been incredibly proud of his son following in his footsteps and walking the beat side-by-side with him.

“He spent his entire policing career at Sydney City Police Area Command, where he has been part of the Proactive Crime Team since late last year, targeting crimes that directly impact the community.

“On two occasions he had been formally recognised for good police work by members of the community, which shows that he was held in high regard by not only his peers, but the community he served.

“Prior to joining the police force, Aaron served in the Australian Army, which further demonstrates his commitment to serving and protecting the community,” Commissioner Fuller said.

Constable Vidal’s family has requested privacy at this time.

Is Honda returning to Hondamatic transmission?

A new patent filing from Honda seems to suggest a return to the 1970s twist-and-go Hondamatic transmission like on Prince’s Rebel (pictured).

The Hondamatic transmission was popular in America, but not here.

However, Honda now seems keen to extend its auto and semi-auto transmissions throughout its range.

New Hondamatic

This new patent application is a little different from the old two-speed Hondamatic.

For a start, it has six gears available.

It features a gearshift but no clutch lever. Instead, it uses a computer-controlled, electro-hydraulic actuator, mounted just above the engine, instead of on the bars.

A sensor monitors gear lever pressure by monitoring speed, revs, gears and throttle.

As the transmission shifts gears, it cuts the ignition on upshifts, blips the throttle on downshifts and modulateas the clutch when starting and stopping.

When the bike is stopped the clutch disengages.

The patent drawing shows a CB100, but Honda has used the CB1100 in previous patent drawings including GoldWing-style double-wishbone forks.

So that does not mean it would be included on the CB1100, which we no longer get in Australia anyway.

Honda patents

As we know, Honda has been busy with a lot of patents for various bikes, engines, transmissions and innovations in recent years.

Obviously not all will go into production. It seems more likely Honda is intent on protecting its intellectual property.

Other recent Honda patents include:

Report slams wire rope barrier claims

Claims about the safety and cost effectiveness of wire rope barriers have been slammed by a damning report that also found Victoria’s WRB rollout is almost $100m over budget, over time and under-maintained.

The Victorian Auditor General’s report also found there was no evidence to support the claimed safety benefits for motorcycle and scooter riders.

It vindicates much of the criticism by riders skeptical of safety claims and view wire rope barriers as a particular danger to motorcyclists and scooter riders.

While the report looks at Victoria’s rollout of various “safety measures” such as rumble strips and line markings at 20 dangerous locations, it is largely focussed on wire rope barriers with ramifications for all states.

Safety claims overrated

The WRB rollout is a major part of the state’s Towards Zero Strategy that claims “flexible barriers” or WRBs would reduce run‐off‐road and head‐on “serious causality crashes” by up to 85%.

However, the auditor’s report found VicRoads did “not have strong evidence to support this statement” and found that a 46.5% reduction was “more statistically robust”.

More importantly for riders, it found that VicRoads’ crash reduction factors were based on crash data for all vehicle types, mainly cars, not motorcycles.WRB claims

The report says the VicRoads program to target 20 known danger spots contained “no information about how effective flexible barriers are for different types of road users, such as motorcyclists and heavy vehicle drivers”.

“While the Towards Zero Strategy references two studies about the effectiveness of flexible barriers for motorcyclists, neither of these studies have enough data for VicRoads to rely on.”

Maintenance and budget

The auditor’s report also found VicRoads has “failed to properly maintain and monitor the barriers it installed, which increases the risk that they will not perform as intended”.

“If flexible barriers are not properly maintained, then their effectiveness is likely to reduce,” the report states.

It also says VicRoads did not sufficiently plan its flexible barrier installation projects, leading to a budget blow-out of about 22% or $99.9m.

“While flexible safety barriers save lives and reduce serious injuries on Victoria’s roads, they are not as cost‐effective as VicRoads and TAC intended,” the report found.

Australian Motorcycle Council secretary John Eacott says the report is “as damning as the Auditor General could give for a project that has always been queried by riders in Victoria”.

“From personal experience, I can confirm that VicRoads maintenance and repair of WRB relies upon public reports, and is grossly underfunded,” he says.

Motorcycle Riders Association Road Safety Committee spokesman Damien Codognotto says they predicted “the cost of VicRoads illogical fixation on road barriers, at the expense of more effective road safety measures, would prove very bad management of our roads”.

“The claim that wire rope barriers saved lives is not credible. Victorian crash data is inadequate,” he says.

“Add the cost of unnecessary deaths, injuries and property damage and it is obvious VicRoads should be held to account. Heads should roll.”

Recommendations

The report recommends VicRoads and the Traffic Accident Commission develop a better business case, provide “robust” statistics, source peer-reviewed evidence sources, maintain better records and conduct “better asset management maintenance repairs”.

VicRoads and TAC have accepted all recommendations and provided a detailed action plan to address them.

Meanwhile, riders can still make submissions about the perceived dangers of wire rope barriers to a Victorian inquiry into the road toll.

Submissions to the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee will be accepted online until 30 June 2020.

New Ducati ANZ boss explains benefits

Now that Ducati has taken over the reigns of importing into Australia and New Zealand from NF Importers (Frasers), new subsidiary boss Sergi Canovas (above) has explained the benefits to customers and dealers.

We conducted an interview with Sergi where he answered not only our questions but those supplied by Ducati Owners Club members.

Background

Sergi was born in Barcelona 47 years ago and has been a passionate rider form an early age, riding a Bultaco dirt bike alongside his father.

He joined the Piaggio Group in 2004 working in the sales team at Derbi Motorcycles, eventually becoming the manager for southern Spain before becoming the import manager for Europe.

In 2010, he moved to Vietnam to open Piaggio’s Asia-Pacific unit.

He joined his “dream manufacturer” in 2017 when he got the call from Ducati to become country manager in India.

The largest Ducati store in the world is in New Delhi - Thai - asian marketDucati’s New Delhi showroom is the second largest in the world

“Last year, I was lucky enough to receive the project to set up a subsidiary in Australia,” he says.

“It’s a fantastic country and I can’t wait to ride around it.”

However, his movements have since been curtailed by the pandemic.

“Australia is a special market for us,” he says.

“There is a very emotional connection between Bologna and Australia, especially with racing and Australia riders. We will continue that connection with Jack Miller next year. It couldn’t be a better time to come to Australia”.

When Sergie arrived, Frasers gave him a Scrambler 1100 Sport to ride around, but he is now waiting for Ducati’s press bike fleet to arrive and has his eye set on a Streetfighter V4.

Ducati Streetfighter V4 ready to brawlDucati Streetfighter V4

Here’s the Q&A with Sergi

Q: How tough has it been to arrive in the middle of a pandemic?

A: That’s a worldwide problem, but Australia has been very lucky as it hasn’t affected your heath much. In terms of the market there was a big downturn in numbers in March April, but May and now June seems to be coming back to normal. Let’s hope it continues.

Q: What is your priority?

A: First priority is to take sure that we have the network operating properly with training and communication. We also want to maximise our presence in the market using all our marketing tools in social media and PR.

Q: Will this Ducati import subsidiary mean cheaper bikes?

A: We try to maintain consistency in prices around countries. Prices are also based on the individual markets. (In other words, no change.)

Q: What can owners expect in terms of response from Ducati on bike issues?

A: We will be closer to customers and understand the needs of the market and be quicker with our response. It shortens the communication channel with the brand in Italy. Customers will notice this. Training will also be good, plus marketing, sales and product.

Q: What is the future for sportsbikes in the company?

A: Sportsbike is in our DNA and it will remain there forever. It’s part of our history. But the motorcycling market is a lot of different trends. Trends change, but we retain the Ducati style.

Q: How will Ducati seek new riders?

A: We recently launched the 950 Hypermotard which makes young people more attracted to biking. Sometimes it’s more aggressive bikes and sometimes more accessible bikes like the Scrambler. These make it possible for the customer to enter the Ducati world. Motivation to buy a Scrambler is different to buying a sportsbike and we need to explore that.

Ducati Hypermotard 950 RVEDucati Hypermotard 950 RVE

Q: How will you support the Desmo Owners Clubs?

A: We have a dedicated department in Italy that deals with DOCs and they have a meeting with all the presidents and try to understand what they need and we explain what we are doing. We also need to go out and visit them and understand their needs. I was supposed to be in New Zealand on a DOC ride in March but the pandemic stopped that, but I hope to get out soon.

Q: How can owners clubs support the relationship?

A: Just being loyal is a big asset to us. We want to leverage that. There will be more opportunities to ride.

Q: Will you bring back the inclusive Ducati Turismo event?

A: We have activities for different customers and potential customers around the world. We want Ducatisti to come but we also want to see others come. Grab a bike from a dealer and join in.

Q: Will Ducati move into the smaller displacement categories?

The Scrambler 62 helped us gain newcomers who we hope will upgrade to the next model. Definitely this segment is growing in India and it’s a good platform to bring in new riders. This would really benefit us. They would start the journey with us. But we don’t have small bikes in mind in the next few years.

Q: Will there be greater factory representation at events?

A: Of course. This is one of our biggest assets and why we work with Ducati to leverage on these amazing activities. Unfortunately we don’t have the MotoGP this year at Phillip Island, but we should have the World Superbikes in March.

Q: Will you increase the number of Ducati resellers and dealers?

A: Dealer coverage is good. We are where we have to be. What we need to do now is support dealers with training and support.

Ducati Owners Club of Victoria celebrate their 40th anniversary motorcyclesDucati Owners Club of Victoria

Q: How will you support the large contingent of classic Ducati owners in Australia and New Zealand in answering their questions, provenance inquiries and hard-to-find parts?

A: We support all Ducati customers. We are the best ones to ask and we now have better lines of communication with the experts at the factory.

Q: Will Ducati build more bikes in Thailand?

We currently bring in the Monster 659 and Scrambler from Thailand. We have the right sort of products from Italy. I don’t see anything to think about changing this mix.

Cardo Systems Now available in Canada through Parts Canada

Canadians, rejoice! Cardo Systems products will now be easier to find than ever for our friends up north.

Begin Press Release:

CARDO SYSTEMS LTD.-Now available in Canada through Parts Canada

Parts Canada continues to build its list of top brands to their catalogues, and is proud to announce Canadian distribution of Cardo Systems Ltd., a leading communications system bringing the ultimate communication experience to any ride.

In 2003 Cardo was delivering state-of-the-art technology to the cellular industry with Bluetooth headpieces when the “eureka” moment struck, and they applied the technology to motorcycle riding. It was then that the adaptation to motorcycle helmets offered motorcyclists connection to their phones, music, and most of all, to other riders. It was considered a “marvel of innovation” and was known as the Scala Rider. Since then, Cardo has been committed to making the lives of fellow riders better and have been building “firsts” all along the way, including the first Bluetooth headset, the first built in FM radio, first rider-to-rider ability, long-range connection, music sharing ability, mesh communication and language control. And in 2019 introduced the ultimate sound experience for motorcycle riders was upgraded with crystal-clear sound quality via a partnership with JBL.

As the global leader in wireless communication systems for motorcyclists, Cardo Systems offer a full line of communications devices, including its popular FREECOM and PACKTALK lineups. Cardo’s premier line of PACKTALK products are highlighted by the company’s industry-leading Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC) technology, which solves all Bluetooth pain points and allows riders to seamlessly pair with fellow riders. Unlike Bluetooth pairing, which requires manual pairing before each ride, DMC allows riders to pair once and forget about it. Each Cardo System model has been designed, developed and tested for a variety of use cases. Its durable and waterproof construction allows riders to take it through any condition, including rain, shine, mud, dust or snow.

James Danyluk, president of Parts Canada is looking forward to offering the Cardo brand to our dealers, and in turn to Canadian motorcyclists and motorcycle racers, as the PACKTALK system has found its way to tracks and racing series across the country. Mr. Danyluk explains “Cardo is innovative in their technology and their practices within the motorcycle community, and we’re very happy to represent the Cardo brand in Canada.” Jamie Cheek, Cardo’s VP of Sales adds, “we are excited to work with Parts Canada and their team in helping to expand the opportunity for customers to join the Cardo family.”

As always, Parts Canada is committed to bringing Canadian motorcyclists the best brands the industry has to offer. You can trust your experience with Cardo Systems, distributed through Parts Canada, will be an excellent one.

About Cardo

Marc VDS: “It won’t be easy but the team is ready & hungry”

It will be an unusual season…
“It will be very unusual, and the start will not be easy. There are many health measures and prevention at all levels, a limit on technicians in the teams, no audience, closed paddock, etc. It’s not a tasteful dish for anyone to have to work like this, but as I said before, we must stay with the positives and see it as the first step in returning to normal. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see the adaptability of riders and teams to this new situation, such as repeating races on the same track (Jerez, Austria, Misano, Aragon and Valencia will host races in two consecutive weekends). You’ll see who has the ability to learn from a Grand Prix and implement improvements immediately on the same stage one week later.”
