Officer dies in motorcycle crash with ute

A utility driver who allegedly ran a red light and hit a motorcycle killing the rider, a police officer riding home from duty yesterday (18 June 2020), appeared in a Sydney court today.

Tommy Balla, 37, of The Ponds, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

The rider was Constable Aaron Vidal, 28, who was travelling home to Bligh Park after completing his duties at Sydney City Police Area Command.

NSW Police say the crash occurred at the intersection of Windsor and Schofields Roads, Rouse Hill, just before 5.45pm.

Paramedics found Aaron critically injured and started CPR, but sadly he died at the scene.

Balla was uninjured and taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later charged, refused bail overnight and appeared in Blacktown Local Court today where police alleged Balla drove through a red light.

The matter was adjourned to 14 August 2020 with Balla released on conditional bail.

Constable Vidal attested as part of class ‘332’ on Friday 8 December 2017, after which he commenced duties as a probationary constable at Sydney City. He was confirmed as a constable in December 2018.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has extended his condolences to the Vidal family on behalf of the NSW Police Force.

“My thoughts are with Aaron’s family and fiancée, as well as his current and former colleagues at this difficult time,” Commissioner Fuller said.

“Aaron was one of six siblings and worked alongside his father, Chief Inspector David Vidal, at Sydney City.

“Dave has always been incredibly proud of his son following in his footsteps and walking the beat side-by-side with him.

“He spent his entire policing career at Sydney City Police Area Command, where he has been part of the Proactive Crime Team since late last year, targeting crimes that directly impact the community.

“On two occasions he had been formally recognised for good police work by members of the community, which shows that he was held in high regard by not only his peers, but the community he served.

“Prior to joining the police force, Aaron served in the Australian Army, which further demonstrates his commitment to serving and protecting the community,” Commissioner Fuller said.

Constable Vidal’s family has requested privacy at this time.

Rider’s bike impounded after chase

NSW Police have charged a male aged 40 and impounded his Kawasaki Ninja 250R after a high-speed chase in Sydney’s inner-east at the weekend.

On Saturday (3 May 2020), officers attached to Botany Bay Traffic and Highway Patrol saw the motorcycle on Joynton Avenue, Zetland, about 8.15am.

Checks revealed the motorbike was not displaying the correct number plates.

Police attempted to stop the Kawasaki but the rider rode off, leading police on a pursuit through Zetland and Rosebery, allegedly at speeds estimated at up to 120km/h in signposted 40km/h zones.

The pursuit was later terminated at Kensington due to safety concerns.

Bike impounded

About 1.30pm yesterday (Monday 4 May 2020), officers tracked down the motorcycle to a unit complex on Grandstand Parade, Zetland, and impounded it.

“A man approached officers and allegedly verbally threatened them,” police say.

“The 40-year-old man attempted to walk away when informed of his arrest and was restrained following a struggle with officers, where it is alleged, he kicked a constable.”

The man, Frederick Alan Doolan, was taken Mascot Police Station and charged with:

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly;
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous;
  • Exceed speed more than 20km/h;
  • Two counts of use unregistered motor vehicle;
  • Two counts of motor vehicle display misleading number-plate;
  • Two counts of drive motor vehicle during disqualification period;
  • Motorbike rider (alone) not wear/secure fit approved helmet;
  • Assault police officer in execution of duty;
  • Intimidate police officer in execution of duty; and
  • Resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

Doolan was refused bail and appeared today in Central Local Court where he was refused bail and the matter adjourned to Bathurst Court on 6 July 2020.

Two motorcyclists die in NSW crashes

Two motorcyclists have died in separate accidents in NSW in the past day including one riding on the wrong side of the road and without lights.

NSW Police say that about 2.30am today (Thursday 16 April 2020) an officer from Tuggerah Lakes Police District saw the bike on the wrong side of the Motorway Link.

“The officer directed the rider to stop. However, he continued on to Blue Haven Way, followed by the officer, where there has been a collision involving the two vehicles,” police say.

The rider, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene and the officer has been taken to Wyong Hospital for mandatory testing.

The Crash Investigation Unit has been called to the scene and a critical incident team from Brisbane Water PD will investigate.

Their investigation will be subject to an independent review and information provided to the Coroner.

Second NSW crash

Another motorcyclist has died in a crash at Port Macquarie about 8am yesterday (15 April 2020).

Police say a motorcycle and truck collided at the intersection of Pacific Drive and Bangalay Road, Port Macquarie.

The male motorcyclist died at the scene.

The male truck driver was uninjured and taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Two rider deaths in sad end to 2019

Two male riders have died on New Year’s Eve in NSW in a tragic end to 2019, bringing the total number of motorcycle deaths for the year to 67.

That is seven above the three-year average and was the third rider death in NSW in 24 hours.

Dubbo death

Just before 9pm last night (31 December 2019), emergency services were called to the Mitchell Highway in Maryvale, just north of Wellington near Dubbo, following reports of a crash between a motorcycle and utility vehicle.

The rider, believed to be a man aged in his 20s, died at the scene.

Police say the male driver of the utility, and a female passenger, were airlifted to Orange Base Hospital with multiple injuries.

The utility caught fire and was extinguished by NSW Rural Fire Service.

Orana Mid-Western Police District officers have established a crime scene and the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Coffs Harbour crash

At 9pm, emergency services received reports that a male rider was found on the road near his motorcycle at Coramba Road, Coffs Harbour.

Passers-by tried to revive him until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene.

The man is yet to be formally identified.

Coffs Clarence Police District officers will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Anyone who may have been driving along Coramba Road around the time of the incident, and witnessed or captured dashcam footage of the motorbike, is urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police Station on (02) 6691 0799.

Park fatal

These deaths follows another fatal the night before when a 22-year-old male rider died in Sydney’s Royal National Park while on a group ride.

Horror motorcycle crashes in two states

Three motorcyclists are critically injured following a horror night on the roads in NSW and Victoria with police appealing for witnesses to the crashes, including one hit and run.

On initial police reports, it appears that two of the incidents were the fault of drivers.

Pennant Hills crash

A motorcyclist remains in a critical condition after coming off his bike at Pennant Hills overnight.

The crash happened on Pennant Hills Road when a southbound motorcyclist swerved to avoid a northbound silver Mitsubishi Outlander performing a U-turn, near the intersection of Pomona Street, about 6.20pm (Thursday 7 March 2019),

The 23-year-old rider was thrown from the motorcycle, sliding along the roadway before hitting a brick wall.

He sustained head and internal injuries and has undergone surgery overnight in Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the SUV, a 62-year-old man from West Pennant Hills, continued south but was flagged down by another motorist.

He immediately returned to the scene and spoke with police. The man was arrested and has now undergone mandatory testing; he has also provided a statement to Crash Investigators.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to officers, or anyone with dash cam vision, to contact the Crash Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hit and run

Keilor police are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage following a hit run in Laverton North last night (7 March).

Investigators have been told a motorcycle rider collided with an unknown vehicle on the entry ramp of the Western Ring Road near the Princes Freeway about 6.25pm.

The rider, a 42-year-old Altona North man, was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital for treatment.

It is believed the driver of the vehicle fled the scene without rendering assistance.

Rear-ender

Police are investigating a collision in Balwyn North this evening that has left a motorcyclist with life-threatening injuries.

It is believed the motorcyclist was travelling inbound on the Eastern Freeway near Burke Road about 9pm when it has struck the back of a silver Mercedes.

The yet to be identified male rider was thrown from his BMW motorcycle and has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The female driver of the Mercedes was not injured.

Police believe a second motorcycle may have been travelling in the vicinity at the time of the collision.
