What are the defects?

Misrouted harness wiring may become damaged by the lower lug on main frame headstock when the handlebars are rotated.

What are the hazards?

Damaged wiring harness may cause the engine to stall, and increase the risk of injury and death of the rider or other road users in an accident.

What should consumers do?

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted and asked to present their motorcycle to an authorised Triumph dealers to have recall work carried out free of charge. A new VIN label protector will be fitted to the motorcycle to prevent contact between the wiring and the headstock lug. Some motorcycles may also need a rework of the harness.

What are the defects?

The motorcycle’s rear reflex reflector may become loose or fall off.

What are the hazards?

If the reflector is missing, affected motorcycles may be less visible to drivers of other vehicles, which could increase the risk of a crash, resulting in injury or death of the rider.

What should consumers do?

Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to contact Australian Triumph dealers to make an appointment to have the rear reflex reflector replaced free of charge.

BMW issues two product recalls

BMW Motorrad has issued two recalls in North America for leaks in brakes and real tanks for a variety of models.

The recalls do not affect any bikes in Australia.

The brake recall affects the following models:

  • 2019 and 2020 BMW R 1250 GS
  • 2019 and 2020 BMW R 1250 GS Adventure
  • 2019 and 2020 BMW R 1250 RT
  • 2020 BMW S 1000 RR
  • 2020 BMW S 1000 XR

The recall notice says the front brake calliper may leak brake fluid when parked.

This fluid weeping is related to a small incompatibility between the inner seal and seal groove of affected brake callipers.

This could affect brake performance.

Owners should also be aware that brake fluid is extremely corrosive and may affect paintwork.

Riders are asked to check their front brake reservoirs for leaks and contact their local dealers for an inspection and free replacement.

Fault fuel pump

BMW Motorrad has also issued a recall on several 2005 to 2012 models over to a potentially faulty fuel pump.

The recall notice says excessive loads on the fuel pump flange could cause the plastic to crack and lead to a fuel leak.

Owners are asked to bring in their bikes to a BMW dealer for an inspection and the free installation of a reinforcing ring.

Some owners whose bikes had a support ring replaced in a 2013 recall may require a new fuel pump.

They are warned of potential fire risks from the fuel leak.

Triumph Recalls Street Models Over Wiring Issue

Triumph has issued a global recall over wiring issues for its 900cc Street Twin and Street Scrambler models.

The issue revolves around the movement of the handlebars which inputs could damage the wiring harness over time due to a misrouted harness.

The wiring harness may make contact with the lower lug on the main frame headstock.

Constant steering inputs may cause the harness to rub the lug, resulting in wear and potential damage to the wiring over time. The engine may end up stalling unexpectedly.

The official Australian Competition and Consumer Commission notice has not yet been released but Triumph Australia has attempted to get in touch with owners to alert them to the issue.

Since some owners may have sold their bikes privately, we have published this recall notice to advise those new owners.

The issues affects 2019 and 2020 Street Twin and Scrambler models.

Owners are asked to book non their bike wth a Triumph dealer to have a VIN plate protector installed that will reroute the harness.

They will also inspect the harness and replace it if necessary, free of charge.

The “Bonneville” range has been the subject of several embarrassing recalls since they were introduced in 2016:

Indian issues 2nd Scout recall on brakes

Indian Motorcycle has issued a global recall on 2019 Scout and Scout Bobber motorcycles for a possible problem with the brakes.

The brake fluid on some bike might not have been filled to the manufacturer’s quality standards which could allow an air bubble which would affect braking efficiency.

This is a follow-up to the 2018 recall for a brake issue on the Scout which advised owners to do an “urgent pre-ride inspection” to ensure the brakes were working properly.

An official Australian Competition and Consumer Commission notice has not yet been released, but Indian Motorcycle Australia says owners have been contacted.

We publish all recall notices in case ownership changes hands and the distributor is not notified.

Inspect brakes

Since the official notice has not been released, we suggest riders check their brakes before riding and arrange an inspection.

The original notice advised riders to do the following urgent pre-ride inspection before riding the bike straight to the dealership:

  • Press down on the rear brake pedal. It should move freely and smoothly. The pedal should feel firm and continue to feel firm until released.
  • Release the pedal. It should return to its rest position quickly when released.
  • Repeat Pre-Ride Inspection for the front brake lever. Ensure the lever feels firm and that it returns to rest position quickly when released.

“If either the front or rear brake fails to perform as stated or travels too far before beginning to engage the brake, please contact your Indian Motorcycle dealer directly,” the 2018 notice said.

It’s always a good idea to do this sort of inspection with any bike as part of your usual pre-ride check.

It is believed the new notice invites riders to make an appointment at their Indian dealership for the brake fluid to be flushed and replaced, free of charge.

The manufacturer confirmed that no components of the brake system needed to be replaced.

Safety recall on Aprilia Tuono and RSV4

Aprilia Australia has issued a safety recall notice for a brake issue on 2017-2020 RSV4 and Tuono 1100 motorcycles.

The official safety recall notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the front brake pad friction material “could potentially separate from the back plate, resulting in reduced braking performance”.

“Reduced brake performance may result in a dangerous fall or collision, causing serious injury or death to the rider or other road users,” the notice says.

Owners should contact their authorised Aprilia dealer to book a brake pad inspection and, if potentially faulty brake pads are found, they will be replaced free of charge.

In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

Bell helmet recalled for missing label

The Bell MX-9 Adventure DLX helmet has been recalled simply because the European certification label is missing from the chin strap.

Under Australia rules, helmets must have an ECE22.05 label on the inside of the helmet.

You can actually remove the compliance sticker from the outside of the helmet, but it must still have a compliance label stitched into the inside of the helmet.

However, the label is missing from the Bell MX-9 Adventure DLX helmet, but only those fitted with the Transition Lens and sold between 19 May 2019 and 29 June 2020.

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has not yet been listed on their website.

However, TeamMoto and Motorcycle Accessories Supermarket have already alerted customers on their email data bases to return the helmet for a full refund or a replacement/swap using the original purchase price as credit.

Customers are warned not to dispose of the helmet.

Helmet recalls

While there are dozens of motorcycle recalls each year, helmet recalls are rare.

The last was an O’Neal helmet last year for a failed Fidlock clasp.

Fire risk forces Kawasaki ZX-10 recall

A fire risk has forced Kawasaki Australia to recalled 54 Ninja ZX-10R, RR and R SE models over an engine management issue.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says:

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) programming may cause the engine to after fire when the Kawasaki Quick Shifter (KQS) function is used under heavy engine load (high rpm and throttle opening over 50%). This may cause the air suction valves to become deformed and/or broken. Continued use of the motorcycle with this condition may also damage surrounding parts. If this occurs, there is an increased risk of fire or accident and injury to the rider or other road users.

Owners will be advised by mail to contact an authorised Kawasaki Dealership to arrange a time to have a modification completed free of charge.

Ducati recalls Superleggera on brake issue

Ducati Australia has recalled the 2017 1299 Superleggera motorcycles over an issue with the front brake pad material may separate from the brake pad.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says if the issue occurs, there is “an increased risk of an accident and/or injury to the rider and other road users”.

Owners will be notified in writing to contact their closest Ducati dealer or service agent and arrange an appointment to replace the front brake pad, free of charge.

Consumers who are unsure whether they are affected can also check their VIN by clicking here. Only 32 bikes are affected.

Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitilen grounded

Riders of 2018-20 Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen 701 motorcycles have been grounded over a potential fuel leak issue.

The official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says owners should “immediately contact an authorised dealer and do not ride the vehicle”.

Since the parts to fix the problem are not yet available, riders are effectively grounded.

Husqvarna Motorcycles has unveiled the production Svartpilen 701 flat tracker as well as the Vitpilen 701 Aero retro sports bike and the EE 5Svartpilen 701

“During operation or while parked, it is possible that fuel can leak out of the fuel level sensor mounting area and/or the fuel pump mounting area of the fuel tank,” the ACCC notice says.

“If a fuel leak occurs, leaking fuel could cause damage or may result in fire, which could increase the risk of injury to the rider, bystanders and risk of damage to property.

“Consumers are recommended to stop riding the motorcycle until it has been repaired. If you previously experienced or are now experiencing a fuel leak, immediately contact an authorised dealer and do not ride the vehicle.”

Husqvarna Australia will send owners a letter advising them of the recall and that parts are not available yet for immediate repairs.

So they are basically grounded until they get a follow-up letter advising them of the arrival of the parts.

Then they can make a booking for the free repair.

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) of the 175 affected bikes are listed at the end of this article.
