BMW doubles R 18 cruiser models

The BMW R 18 family this month doubles with the addition of two new models.

Their R 18 and R 18 Classic cruisers (from $29,155 ride-away) will be joined by two touring or bagger models.

They arrive in Australia in August with the R 18 B Deluxe featuring a handlebar-mounted “batwing-style” fairing and hard saddlebags from $39,310 while the full-dresser R 18 Transcontinental Deluxe with a top box is $41,675.

For the Australian market they have been fitted with a lot of the optional extras.

They include four analogue instruments and high definition 10.25-inch TFT colour display to keep turning riders entertained and informed.

Both also arrive in Australia with Active Cruise Control that regulates the distance from the vehicle in front without the rider having to adjust their speed.

It uses radar sensors in the front fairing. Interestingly, it will automatically reduce the speed in a corner to keep the rider safe.

They come with three riding modes (Rain, Roll and Rock), Automatic Stability Control, engine torque control, reverse gear and Hill Start Control as standard.

Marshall amps were good enough for Jimi Hendrix and the Marshall Gold Series Stage 1 and 2 sound systems fitted to these bikes are good enough for BMW riders, too.

The systems feature speakers with black cover grilles and classic white Marshall lettering with up to 280 watts of total output.

Both bikes will be available in exclusive First Edition variants that combine the R 18 look with iconic and classic BMW black paintwork with white double-lining.

Additional highlights include specially designed surfaces (Chrome Package), high-grade stitching on the seat and “First Edition” badging.

More BMW cruiser models and parts

BMW’s return to the cruiser market with the R 18 looks like being a success story as the brand announces more models and Corbin adds an aftermarket fairing and seat.

It is usually a mark of the success of a new model when aftermarket companies of the calibre of Corbin of the US produce specific seats.

Not only have they produced a twin seat with backrests (pictured above), but they have also produced a bikini fairing for the cruiser model.

They say it will not only protect the rider with improved aerodynamics, but also help lower wind noise.

And to complement that quieter, calmer “bubble” they also have a Bluetooth audio kit for the fairing with 500 watts of power, a dash-mounted controller and JL Audio 5.25″ coaxial speakers.

Surely this means Corbin believe the model will be a huge sales success as do we after our road test last month.

It comes as BMW Australia has announced the arrival of the R 18 Classic.

A Touring model is expected later this year.

Will BMW add an R 18 Dragster version?

BMW Motorrad returns to the cruiser category with the R 18, but will they soon add a Dragster version like this produced by renowned LA designer Roland Sands?

His custom job was made easier by the fact that the R 18 has an easily removable rear frame and a simple-to-dismantle painted parts set.

I think BMW will build a model like this because this is a fully BMW-sanctioned custom build by the same person who helped them design the R nineT.

If BMW doesn’t build a Dragster model, you may be able to customise your own.

Roland has also created two design collections of milled aluminium parts for the launch of the R 18 Cruiser: “Machined” and “2-Tone-Black”.

They include front and rear wheels in different dimensions from standard, plus  speedometer housings, handlebar clamps, risers, handlebar grips, hand levers and mirrors as well as engine housing trim elements, filler caps, intake silencer covers and much more.

Roland also created custom parts for the R nineT.

We also reckon the riding position looks a little uncomfortable with the inability for forward controls because of the massive boxer heads.

It will come with a range of accessories including ape hanger bars, tractor saddle, racks and more.

Yes, thankfully it also includes pipes to replace that dreadfully massive standard exhaust!

We’ve seen several other variants of the bike in concepts, prototypes and spy photos. 

So we expect this is just the first in a new line with the 1802cc boxer engine, probably including a Dragster like Roland’s design.

There is a host of exciting motorcycles being released in 2020 that have caught the attention of our more than 300,000 readers a month.

Speaking of which, Harley-Davidson will release an abundance of unusual products in 2020, including the Bronx Streetfighter range, electric bicycles and motorcycles, and their first big-bore adventure bike, the Pan America.

While our articles on all these bikes scored highly with our readers, the macho Streetfighter won this title bout.

The Suzuki Hayabusa no longer meets stringent Euro5 conditions that kick in from 1 January 2020.

And we don’t exactly know what Suzuki will do to replace it or even if they will!

However, our articles about patent filings for an updated Hayabusa have sparked a lot of interest, especially the possibility it could be powered by a 1440cc engine.

BMW reveals R 18 Big Boxer details

Details of the Big Boxer engine in the new BMW R 18 cruiser have finally been revealed in Munich overnight.

The air/oil cooled boxer will have 1802cc of capacity and develop just 67kW (91hp) at 4750rpm, but a whopping 158Nm of peak torque at 3000 revs.

More than 150Nm will be on tap from just 2000 to 4000 revs.

Despite the enormous pulling power, BMW says the “generously sized flywheel mass” will provide “exemplary running smoothness”.

It will idle at a lumpy 950rpm and hit the limiter at a lazy 5750rpm.

However, we still don’t know what the final appearance of the bike will be.

Following two independent custom shop R 18 concepts, BMW Motorrad unveiled their Concept R 18 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2019 and a second concept, the more modern R 18/2, was unveiled at EICMA earlier this month.

There have also been some spy shots, but not a full reveal which is expected early next year.

Even before a production model R 18 cruiser has rolled out of the Spandau factory gates, BMW Motorrad Australia is taking orders and deposits and has set up a dedicated site.

BMW says the Big Boxer engine will have overhead valves and a separate engine and transmission housing, but otherwise the same structural features of their first boxer which had laterally controlled valves.

It is BMW’s highest-capacity twin-cylinder boxer engine in motorcycle series production.

The Big Boxer weighs a hefty 110.8kg and has a 107.1mm bore and 100mm stroke.

Other features are large ribbed cylinders and heads with a vertically split aluminium engine housing.

Unlike their classic air-cooled two-valve boxer engines, the crankshaft is forged from quenched and tempered steel.

It has an additional main bearing at the centre, which is necessary to prevent “undesirable bending vibrations of the crankshaft”.

Like the crankshaft, the two connecting rods with I-shaft are mounted on plain bearings and are also forged from quenched and tempered steel.

They accommodate cast aluminium pistons with two compression rings and an oil wiper ring. The running surface of the light metal cylinders is coated with NiCaSil.

Lubricating and cooling oil is supplied by a wet sump lubrication system with a two-stage oil pump via sleeve-type chain driven by the crankshaft.

Modern features include four valves, dual ignition, a modern combustion chamber architecture, intake manifold injection and the BMS-O engine management system for optimum torque and to meet Euro emissions targets.

However, it uses the classic OHV configuration for its valve drive of the legendary R 5 to R 51/2 from 70 years ago.

As in the historical role model, the two camshafts are positioned to the left and right above the crankshaft in the Big Boxer.

BMW says the advantage of this “twin camshaft boxer” is shorter pushrods which reduces moving masses, minimises deflections and lowers linear expansions for a stiffer valve drive with improved control precision and higher speed stability.

In the traditional BMW Motorrad boxer design, the two pushrods actuate one pushrod per cylinder side for the intake and one for the exhaust side, guided in a sealed pushrod tube on the top of the cylinders. The two intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder head are actuated in pairs via fork toggle levers.

In contrast to today’s widespread engine technology, valve clearance compensation is not effected by means of hydraulic elements, but – as was the case in most classic air-cooled BMW two-valve boxers for decades – via one adjusting screw with one lock nut for each valve.

As was formerly the case in the classic two-valve boxers, valve clearance adjustment (0.2 – 0.3 mm) in the R18 Big Boxer is also quick and easy. The valves are made of steel, with a disc diameter of 41.2mm on the inlet side and 35mm on the outlet side. The valve angle is 21 degrees on the inlet side and 24 degrees on the outlet side.

TransmissionBMW R 18 Big Boxer

It is married to a constant-mesh six-speed transmission and self-reinforcing single-plate dry clutch with anti-hopping function to prevent rear-wheel lock-ups on rapid downshifts.

The transmission is located in a dual-section aluminium housing and is designed as a four-shaft transmission with helical gear pairs.

The gearbox input shaft with lug dampers drives the two gearbox shafts with the gear wheel pairs. An output shaft is provided to bridge the distance and reverse the direction of rotation. A reverse gear is available as an optional extra. This is driven by an intermediate gear and an electric motor and can be shifted manually.

As in all BMW motorcycles with boxer engines, torque is transmitted from the gearbox to the rear wheel in the R 18 via a propeller-shaft or universal-shaft drive with universal joint, shaft and rear-axle drive with bevel and ring gear.

The propeller shaft and universal joint are classically nickel-plated and open, as used by BMW Motorrad in models up to 1955.

A so-called tripoid joint is applied on the gearbox side for length compensation.

BMW R 18 cruiser spy photos surface

Spy photos of the production version of the BMW R 18 cruiser prototype that dropped jaws earlier this year now comes with an oil cooler, longer pipes, bags and a fatter front tyre.

We expected there would be some differences between the beautiful and simplistic prototype and it seems engine cooling for emissions regulations will be the real spoiler of the production model.

No surprises there.

The production version is expected to be unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan next month.

We’re not sure where these spy shots came from as we have seen them on many websites, each with their own watermark over them. These are all from Motorcycle.com who say they “received them”.

However, we can see the 1800cc boxer engine is pretty much the same as the prototype, except for that oil cooler and, of course, EFI instead of the carburettors on the prototype.

We can also see the pipes are much longer and the front wheel is smaller with a fatter tyre.2020 BMW R 1800

The prototype front wheel has a 21-inch wheel with a 110mm or 120mm tyre. The production version is likely a 17 or 18-inch with a 130mm or wider tyre.

Like the prototype, the front wheel has twin discs and spokes.

Because of the changed wheel geometry, it seems the front forks may also be a slightly tighter rake and trail.

BMW designers have thankfully retained the lovely drop tank, exposed chrome-plated drive shaft and the simple steel cradle frame.

Let’s hope they have also retained the single, simple, lamp-shaped headlight.

Obviously the production version will have indicators, instruments and mirrors that the concept didn’t. And we doubt those back-to-front levers will be used.

There appear to be a couple of versions of this bike; cruiser and tourer.

In some photos we can see a rear seat, rather than the prototype’s solo saddle and there are even leather saddlebags and a tall windscreen.2020 BMW R 1800

Pre-bookings have already opened around the world and a range of heritage gear to natch the bike has been released.

BMW Group Australia spokesman Nick Raman says customers are champing at the bit for the cruiser.

“Orders have been taken at a dealer level for a production equivalent of the R 18,” he says.

“The deposit amount is at the dealer’s discretion, bearing in mind pricing and specification detail have not yet been released.

“We are however very pleased with how the pre orders are tracking.”

In April 2019 a second cruiser concept with the engine was rolled out by a Texan custom shop.

Then BMW wheeled out their BMW R 18 cruiser prototype at the 90th the Concorso d’Eleganza show at Lake Como in Italy.

There are no details, no tech specs and not even a confirmation that it has an 1800cc boxer engine, but it does look big enough.

The biggest Beemer boxer engine yet is believed to be 1798.4cc in an over-square configuration (107 x 100mm).

BMW heritage fashion suits R 18 cruiser

BMW Motorrad has launched a 2020 heritage collection of rider gear to appeal to riders of their R nineT models as well as the upcoming R 18 cruiser.

“BMW Motorrad has announced the launch of a serial-production motorcycle for the second half of 2020, which will mark its entry into the cruiser segment,” their press release says.

While BMW Motorrad Australia can’t confirm pricing or arrival of the cruiser nor the heritage gear, they have incorporated a website page for the cool cruiser collection. It should start arriving in shops next year.

It’s obviously designed to appeal to younger riders with its casual look and feel rather than sports riders.

Their heritage clothing segment was started in 2014 to coincide with the launch of the R nineT models.

The return to cruiser models will give the company a new market niche.

We expect to see the R 18 cruiser unveiled at the ECMA Motorcycle Show in Milan next month.

BMW Motorrad Australia recently confirmed they are already taking orders for the big, 1800cc, retro cruiser.

The BMW Motorrad Heritage Collection 2020 features a wide range of new items, from leather jackets to denim outfits, as well as motorcycle gloves and signature boots.

“The copper-coloured details and visual accents displayed in these garments hark back to the materials used in classic BMW motorcycles,” they say.

There are also old-style engineer boots and open-face cruiser helmets in the heritage collection.

The first BMW motorcycle was the 1923 R32 with an air-cooled, two-cylinder flat-twin boxer engine.

In 1978, BMW Motorrad was one of the first serial-production manufacturers in the world to introduce a rider equipment range.

“All the materials and textiles used are robust and long-lasting and they fulfil the highest standards of safety and functionality,” BMW says.

All items will be European-approved.

None of the gear has yet been tested by Australia’s MotoCAP, the world’s first rider gear safety and comfort rating system.

BMW Motorrad takes orders on R 18 cruiser

Even before a production model R 18 cruiser has rolled out of the Spandau factory gates, BMW Motorrad is taking orders and deposits on the handsome bike.

That seems to confirm that they are most definitely returning to the cruiser market after their mildly received R 1200 C back in the 1990s.

Dealers have long taken orders and deposits for limited-edition models but a recent trend is to take also orders and deposits for highly anticipated production models even before they are production models.

Indian did it with the FTR 1200 and Suzuki with the resurrected Katana.

Now BMW Motorrad is following the trend.

This is a simplistic model with minimalist design.

No doubt the Germans will give it some Bavarian hi-tech and quirky design as they did with the R nineT after Roland Sands designed the Concept 90.

Over the years I have asked BMW executives whether they would ever return to the cruiser market and they have never said they wouldn’t.

Now it appears they are!
