Motorcycle sales continue to dive

Australian motorcycle sales took another 8.1% dive in the third quarter which contributes to a 33-month downturn in the industry.

By comparison, car sales are down 7.9% last month which is the 18th month in a row of decline, according to official data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

The FCAI figures come during the third annual Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Week.

It’s the economy

FCAI boss, Toby Weber, who is learning to ride a motorcycle, says the bike and car sales decline is “in line with the broader economic environment in Australia”.

“We have seen many factors, including multiple weather events, Federal and State elections, and tightened lending practices contribute to the overall economic conditions,” he says.

In the nine months this year, 62,898 motorcycles, ATVs and scooters were sold, compared with 68,460 for the same period in 2018.

Honda was the overall leader with a 23.1% share of the national market, followed by Yamaha with 21% and Kawasaki with 10.6%.

Road bikes dive

The biggest drop was in road bikes, which took a 13.8% dive.

Harley-Davidson was the road bike leader again with a 19.6% share, while Honda had 16.8% and Yamaha 16.6%.

Honda used to lead this segment, but as been hit by Australia Post not buying postie bikes, but converting to three-wheeler electric bikes.

Across the industry segments, Scooters defied the trend, with a 14.5% climb in sales during the first three quarters.

Honda held a 39.9% scooter share, followed by Vespa with 14.8% and Piaggio with 14.2%.

The ATV/SSV took a 11.3% dive with Polaris the leader on 28.1% share, followed by Honda 22.5% and Yamaha 19.3%.

Off-road category sales fell 2.4%, led by Yamaha 28.1% share, Honda 27.4% and KTM 18.8%.

Demo motorcycle rides increase sales 10%

Offering demo rides will increase motorcycles by 10%, according to EZ Rider Demo which has invented a system to help dealers offer more test rides.

Unlike car dealerships, motorcycle dealerships are reticent to offer demo rides for several reasons including heightened insurance risks.

EZ  Rider Demo has invented a system where potential buyers sign up for a demo ride through the dealer’s website.

They fill out an online form about their riding history and licence, then buy one-day insurance for $US20.

When approved, they get a code that unlocks the key from an electronically secured box at the dealership.

The company will soon begin testing their system in various Californian dealerships.

It’s an innovative, albeit complex, system aimed at addressing the problem of dealerships not offering demo rides.

Demo rides

You wouldn’t buy a car without a test ride, so why should riders be denied the opportunity to test out the bike first?

Some dealers don’t even allow customers to sit on their showroom bikes. Please do not sit

A 2015 US motorcycle industry study found that the availability of demo rides not only improved customer satisfaction of dealerships but also increased motorcycle sales.

The ninth annual Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index (PSI) US Motorcycle Industry Benchmarking Study found that test rides were offered 63% of the time to mystery shoppers compared with 34% five years earlier.

It also found sales staff encouraged customers to sit on a bike 81% of the time, up from 70%.

A good dealer experience also translated to improved sales, with dealerships ranking in the top quarter selling 22% more motorcycles than dealerships in the bottom quarter.

It found Harley-Davidson, BMW and Ducati the most aggressive in offering test rides.

It is no coincidence that every Pied Piper study for the past decade or more has been led by those same three companies.

Aussie test rides

While there is no equivalent study in Australia, the results are perhaps indicative of strict global manufacturer training standards of dealer staff and attitudes to offering demo rides.

The lack of demo rides is one of the biggest complaints about dealerships we receive at MotorBikeWriter.com.

But many of these are for popular new models where demand outstrips supply and every bike that comes into the dealership is already sold.BMW Motorrad GS Off-Road Training

Perhaps the most aggressive brands offering test rides in Australia are Harley-Davidson, BMW and Indian.

Harley not only offers test rides to licensed riders, but also offers a static ride to unlicensed riders with their Jump Start program.

It’s rare for any dealer to offer test rides of off-road or adventure bikes because of the risk of damage, but BMW even hosts annual GS demo ride days around the country.

And Indian throws in free fuel and accommodation on their weekend demo ride offers!

We only have our own experiences and anecdotes of readers to go on, but it seems Japanese brands are the worst at allowing test rides.

Maybe that has to do with complacency because they are the four biggest sellers.

Sales trends

But with their sales down between 6.8-17.4% in the first quarter, they need to pick up their act.Slide sales motorcycles

It may cost more to have demo bikes available, but the results speak for themselves.

The motorcycle industry grapples with this basic sales technique.

Some dealers just see the cost of bike depreciation, fuel and staff time to take riders on escorted demo rides, rather than looking at long-term customer goodwill.

It also requires the manufacturers or importers to back them up with demo bikes and allow them to later sell them at a discount.

Riders see buying a bike as a lottery unless they can actually throw a leg over and feel the bike.

They need to evaluate the ergonomics for their body size, hear the noises, test the power and handling, and even feel the heat from the engine.

Funding plea for injured Victorian couple

A Victorian couple on a dream riding holiday through Europe are now fighting for their lives after being crushed by a tractor trailer on the Stevio Pass in northern Italy last month.

Richard Hogg, 65, and wife Lorna, 62, have only recently started breathing on their own as they recover from induced comas in an Austrian hospital.

A GoFundMe page has already raised more than $30,000 to help fund their medical bills, but more is needed for the extensive costs.

Tragedy strikes couple

The recently retired couple and seasoned riders were on a “dream holiday” with a motorcycle tour group when tragedy struck, says son Paul who rushed to Austria to be by their bedsides.

“They were riding on the Stelvio Pass in Italy and were approaching a left-hand corner when a tractor and trailer came round the corner and rolled, crushing them and injuring others,” he says.

The couple was airlifted to a nearby hospital, which wasn’t equipped to handle the severity of their injuries.

They were then rushed to University Hospital in Austria where they have both since been in induced comas while in and out of surgeries.

Both suffered leg and pelvis injuries, Lorna had a leg amputated and Richard has suffered a ruptured aorta.

Richard also suffered a minor stroke but due to his heavy sedation the impact is not yet known, says Paul.

“When they will be home is very uncertain; possibly a minimum of two months before we are home,” he says.

“Mum has another surgery on her leg tomorrow to hopefully close the wound and dad has his major pelvis reconstruction. We are also still waiting on his MRI results on his spine.”

Fund raising

Their nephew, Riley Cox, has set up the GoFundMe page to cover their enormous medical bills.

“Lorna & Dicko have spent their whole lives caring and looking after others and now they need us,” Riley says.

“They are two of the most caring, kind, determined and positive people, that even during retirement, live life to the fullest, travelling to the other side of the world on a dream holiday.”

Riley says all funds donated will help cover medical costs and repatriation to Australia, as well as ongoing rehab costs.

“Due to the severity of their injuries we don’t know how long it will be until we can bring them home, but we do know it will be a long recovery in Austria away from family and friends, followed by a long healing journey back home in Australia,” he says.

Fight goes on despite disabled parking permit win

A Canberra rider who had his $600 disabled parking fine waived has also now received a second permit so he can have one in his car and one permanently on his motorcycle.

Alan Francis (pictured above) says a more compact motorcycle-specific permit would be handy, but he is happy with the verdict.

Victorian Motorcycle Experts Advisory Panel independent rider representative Dean Marks welcomes the decision, but says the campaign for more suitable motorcycle permits continues.

He says this is an issue for disabled riders right around Australia who are being “heavily fined and penalised”.

Disabled parking fine

Alan's new motorcycle parking permit
Alan’s new motorcycle parking permit

In March this year, Alan, 68, was issued with a $600 ticket for parking his bike in a disabled spot despite displaying a disabled parking permit.

It is believed the inspector told a witness that handicapped stickers are for those who can’t walk any distance and if the owner could ride a Harley he was a “fraud”.

Alan has a compressed spine and has difficulty walking, but not riding.

He had photocopied his disabled parking permit because it was too difficult to swap it between his car and his bike while guaranteeing the flimsy permit would not be stolen.

He did not know it was illegal to reproduce the permit and faced a further $228 fine.

Alan has now been issued with two disabled parking permits, but his is a special case and there is no provision for other disabled riders, nor for a smaller, motorcycle-specific permit.

He says he is grateful for his win and has now enclosed and firmly bolted the permit to his bike which he could not do before.

However, he says a smaller permit would be better.

Permit campaign

Dean Marks disabled permite parking
Dean Marks

Dean raised the matter of riders with disabilities being excluded from the parking provisions and traffic management programs in April.

He says NSW seems to be leading the way by producing a suitable warrant for both motorcycles and cars.

“Riders around Australia are being disadvantaged as they are subject to penalties for parking in disabled parking spots even if they were legally permitted to as they had an issued permit for their car as no system existed to safely and securely attach same to a motorcycle,” he says.

He contacted the Victorian Roads Minister and VicRoads to ask for consideration in their extensive review of the disability parking system in Victoria to bring it in-line with Federal requirements.

However, he said it is evident that riders with disabilities are not taken into consideration in any way.

Dean Marks Riders invited to discuss mental health Shepherds Australia permit
Dean on another charity program to collect socks for the homeless

Victorian Roads Minister Jail Pulford has acknowledged the oversight and says she wrote to all local councils asking them to consider the needs of all motorcyclists in their traffic management plans.

Dean says the issue has become more pressing as councils such as Melbourne City begin removing rider parking from footpaths.

“Councils and local by-laws officers are acting inconsistently and making assumptions as to whether a rider could even have a disability and hence issuing infringements that placed these persons in stressful situations where they had to fight infringements that never should have been issued,” he says.

Dean says disabled riders risk their permit falling off or being stolen as it is difficult to fix properly to a motorbike.

“Should it be lost or stolen, the driver/rider then has a protracted process to have a new one re-issued and in the meantime would not have access to use disabled parking spots,” he says.

“I find it distressing that we are even having this conversation as it demonstrates that the needs of motorcyclists as a legitimate means of transport are not even in the minds of local councils, city planners and others responsible for making these decisions.

“It leaves me perplexed and wondering if anyone even asked question who holds a disabled parking permit and what are their needs.”

Dragging brake

The official notice filed wth the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission says the front brake master cylinders “may cause the front brakes to drag or bind, affecting handling and brake performance”.

“Reduced brake performance and motorcycle handling increases the risk of accident or injury to the rider(s) and other road users,” the notice says.

Owners of bikes with the dragging brake issue should contact their authorised Aprilia or Moto Guzzi dealers to book their vehicle for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the front brake master cylinder, free of charge.

For more information, contact the nearest authorised Aprilia or Moto Guzzi dealer or email [email protected]

Owners can click on these links to find their nearest authorised Aprilia dealer or Moto Guzzi dealer.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Therefore, Motorbike Writer publishes all motorcycle recalls as a service to all riders.

In Australia, recall notices are issued by the manufacturer and the Department of Infrastructure through a voluntary industry code under the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

While any recall is not good news for the manufacturer, it shows that they are largely diligent in fixing problems.

Despite hundreds of recalls by various automotive manufacturers, only the Takata airbag recall has ever been mandatory.  All others have been issued by the manufacturer.

If you believe there is an endemic problem with your bike that should be recalled, contact the ACCC on 1300 302 502.

Heat, dust storm and bushfire warning for riders

Heat, a dust storm and bushfires are expected over the next few days across much of the nation, making life difficult for riders.

Temperatures are expected to reach the 40s across much of South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Queensland on Sunday and Monday, causing a return of bushfire conditions.

Before heading off, riders should check online for bushfires in Queensland and in NSW on the RFS or SES websites.

Police and emergency services are urging all motorists, in particular vulnerable motorcyclists, to heed warnings, avoid danger areas and stay hydrated.Dust storm

Dust storm

The weather bureau is also predicting winds to pick up on Sunday and Monday, creating dust storm conditions over the parched outback.

Heatwave conditions are bad enough, but add in a dust storm and it makes dehydration a bigger risk for riders exposed to the elements.

Last year, a heatwave in Western Australia cost the lives of a rider and hiker from dehydration and in 2017, a 30-year-old father died from dehydration after riding in the forests of the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The dangers of becoming dehydrated in a heatwave are headaches, disorientation, heat stroke, muscle cramps, loss of concentration, drowsiness and nausea, each of which can cause crashes.

And the problem is that once any of these symptoms becomes evident, it is already too late to do anything about it.

The dust storm will also limit riders’ vision and clog your bike’s air filter, so remember to clean the filter after your ride.

Dehydration motorcycle gear Riders dies of dehydration in heatwave dust storm

Tips to avoid dehydration in a heatwave:

  1. Don’t drink too much alcohol the night before a ride. It has a diuretic effect which means it causes you to urinate more water than you take in which means you are losing fluid. And you can’t counteract that by drinking lots of water because most of it will go out in your urine. Obviously, don’t drink alcohol while you are riding!
  2. Start drinking water as soon as you wake and keep sipping water right up until you get on your bike. It takes about half an hour for water to reach your muscles. Guzzling water just before a ride is not good as it can make your stomach to cramp. The Royal Flying Doctor Service which has attended dehydrated riders in the Outback, recommends carrying 10 litres of water per day! Read their Outback riding tips here.
  3. Wear ventilated motorcycle clothing. Leathers may protect you better in a crash, but they create a “microclimate” which impairs your ability to lose heat. As a result you will produce more sweat to decrease your core temp. Instead, wear a flow-through jacket. There are heaps of options on the market. Make sure they have vents in the back so the air flows through. Also, loosen the sleeves so you get plenty of air on your wrists which have a lot of blood vessels close to the skin to effectively cool you down. However, be aware that a flow-through jacket cools you down because it is drying the sweat off your skin which can lead to dehydration. A set of Ventz up your sleeve will also keep you cool as air flows up your arms. However, don’t be fooled by your level of coolness as ventilation can also cause you to loose more water through evaporation. So you still need to keep drinking plenty of water.

BUY Ventz motorcycle jacket vents NOW

  4. Don’t be tempted to remove your jacket in the heat! Exposed skin may feel cooler, but that’s because the sweat is evaporating quicker, but that is just making you more dehydrated. And while your skin feels cool, you’ll be tricked into staying in the sun longer which leads to sunburn. That also leads to dehydration because your body needs water to repair and renew damaged skin.
  5. Get a Camelbak or other brand of water-dispensing unit so you can continue to take small sips of water while you are riding. I’ve seen riders on GoldWings and other big tourers with cup holders so they can take slurps from a water bottle. That’s obviously not as safe as the hands-free Camelback option, but anything is better than nothing. Some people don’t like Camelbaks because the water gets hot, but the temperature of the water doesn’t affect dehydration.Camelbak reduces dehydration heatwave dust storm
  6. Stop more often than usual and hang out in the shade or in an air-conditioned cafe. Since you are drinking lots of fluids, you will probably need to stop anyway!
  7. While you’re stopped, have a coffee, but take it easy. No need to swear off your favourite caramel latte, but avoid excess coffee. That also goes for caffeinated drinks such as Red Bull. High levels of caffeine have a diuretic effect just like alcohol.
  8. While having a coffee break, avoid having too many sweet cakes, donuts and muffins. Sugar can dehydrate you if it gets to very high levels in your blood. This can happen if you are a diabetic, take certain medications or have an infection or some organ diseases. Sugar causes your kidneys to produce more urine to eliminate the sugar, leading to dehydration. Likewise, don’t drink too many sugary drinks. Best to stick to plain water, real fruit juices with no added sugar or drinks such as Gatorade that replace salts and minerals lost in sweat.
  9. We’ve talked a lot about urine and it’s important that you monitor the colour. It should be a straw colour. If it’s too dark, you are dehydrated.
  10. Sweat also depletes your body of sodium and if it becomes too low, it can cause many of the same symptoms as dehydration. The average diet probably has enough sodium, but it’s good to have a little bit of salt on your meals or drink sports drinks that have a sodium supplement. However, beware of sports drinks with caffeine and sugar.
  11. Ok, I know I said there were only 10 tips, but dehydration doesn’t just occur in a heatwave. In winter, the cold can shut off the body’s thirst mechanism and trick you into thinking you’re not sweating. Meanwhile, your body is losing fluids as the air passes over your body.

BMW G 310, C 400 recall on rusty brakes

BMW Motorrad Australia is recalling Indian-made G 310 motorcycles and new C 400 scooters over a problem with rusty brakes.

In an unusual official recall, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, BMW blames road surface conditions for the problem.

“Due to road treatment conditions, such as aggressive salt types or significant usage, surface corrosion could occur within the un-anodised brake calliper piston bore,” the notice says.

“Corrosion on the surface of the brake calliper could impair the piston’s clearance within the bore, affecting brake performance and posing a risk of an accident and serious injury to the rider and other road users.”

It is surprising that any vehicle is released with “un-anodised” brake callipers.

BMW advises owners of 2017-2019 G 310 GS (K02), G 310 R (K03), C 400 GT (K08) and C 400 X (K09) to contact an authorised BMW Service Centre or call the BMW Group Customer Interaction Centre on 1800 813 299 to arrange a free repair.

A full list of the Vehicle Identification Numbers of the 573 vehicles that could be affected by rusty brakes is included at the end of this article.

Consumers can also contact BMW Australia via the BMW Motorrad Australia Website.

In July last year BMW recalled 780 G 310 models over faulty side stands.

Rider safety to count in ANCAP ratings

Rider safety will become an important ingredient in cars obtaining star ratings from 2022 under the ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) ratings.

That means it will be tougher for cars to obtain a full five stars unless they have active mechanisms to detect and avoid crashes with motorcycles.

They include blind spot alerts, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and other automated technologies that steer cars away from crashing with riders.

ANCAP chief technical officer Mark Terrell says the 2022 introduction of the “Powered Two Wheeler – PTW” test target will be based on the “MUSE” project (Motorcycle Users Safety Enhancement), undertaken by Euro NCAP.

The testing used a special motorcycle dummy to simulate various common motorcycle scenarios.

Tougher ANCAP tests

Mark says a similar series of tougher tests for the detection of pedestrians and bicycles has already been incorporated in ANCAP.

“From the start of 2020, the proportion of points for pedestrian and cyclist AEB does increase – making it more likely that manufacturers will need to fit advanced systems to achieve a good star rating,” he says.

“In reality most five-star cars in 2018/19 do have AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
“The actual test scenarios and scoring for 2022 (for motorcycles and scooters) are still under consideration, so I don’t have further detail on these that I can provide at the moment.”

However, we expect they will be similarly tougher.

Hopefully this leads to safer cars on the road and will avoid the SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You) syndrome.

Mistakes To Avoid While Shipping Your Motorcycle

(Shipping article by contributor)

An automobile is indeed one of your most valuable possessions, and you cannot hand it over to someone leniently. But there are certain unavoidable situations when you have no other alternative than to trust third-party organizations to get your motorcycle transported.

If you need to transport your motorbike from one city to another, you must look up the websites offering these services. There are many car transport companies that can provide quick transportation of motorbikes as well as cars, along with simple procedures and complete assurance of security. However, you should also be proactive on your part before signing the deal and shipping your motorbike. Some of the most prevalent blunders to avoid while shipping your automobile are:

Ignoring a background check

The shipping company you choose for your bike must be registered with the Department of Transportation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration necessitates to permit them when shipping across the borders.

Before handing over your vehicle, check their unique registration numbers on government websites. If the company is not presenting you with MC or DoT number, make sure that you get the entire document authenticated in writing. Also, look out for genuine reviews of the company over the internet.

Failing to produce documents

To safely ship your motorcycle outside the city, the companies will require certain original documents like your insurance certificate and automobile registration paperwork. You may also have to present documents supporting your ownership of the vehicle. To stay out of complications, make sure to gather these documents, prior to requirement.

You should also make sure to go through the inspection report they create, after a thorough scrutiny of your bike. Keep a copy of the report with your documents, and once you receive the motorbike after shipping, run a manual check. If there are any new damages because of shipping, bring this to their notice immediately.

Keeping insurance aside

When you are finalizing the shipment, make sure that the company is providing you with proper insurance over the delivery. If required, go through their certificate and understand what sort of damages will be covered under their policy, if your vehicle faces any accident during the transportation.

If the shipping company is not providing you with any assistance, you can ask for extended support from your insurance firm. You can also purchase these additional facilities from the shipping companies, separately.

Ignoring fragile parts

Regardless of how sturdy your vehicle might seem, there remain several components that are breakable. Thus, it becomes crucial to keep these safeguarded before you send your motorcycle for shipping. Most of the time, shipping companies tend to pack the vehicle in a box container so that fragile parts don’t incur any significant damage.

These components include headlights, which can be removed and shipped separately. Ignoring this aspect can take a hit on the overall integrity of your motorbike, as these might face considerable damage during the process. It is also advised to take a picture of your motorcycle before you hand it over so that you can assess if there is any damage situation.

Riders warned on fake NGK spark plugs

Riders have been warned to be on the lookout for fake NGK CR9EIX spark plugs which could cause engine damage due to melted centre electrodes.

The plugs are among large batches of counterfeit motor vehicle spark plugs purchased online, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

“Placing vehicles at great risk of major damage, 60% of the hundreds of spark plugs purchased in trap buys are verified frauds, passing off low-quality materials and inferior construction as genuine parts,” the FCAI says.

They say the plugs have inferior ignition causing poor fuel economy and difficult engine start up.

They also overheat quickly.

Riders would notice a major drop in power, particularly under heavy acceleration or load.

While most of the fake plugs were for car companies such as Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Toyota, NGK CR9EIX fake motorcycle plugs have also been identified.

NGK fake plugs

NGK says buyers can spot a fake by checking these five points.

1. The branding

Have a look at the product name on the spark plug. If the font type is different from the one shown in the photo on the left and if the font is smudged in some way, the product might be a counterfeit.

2. The caulking

Take a close look at the crimping portion of the plug. If you can see a machine cutting mark on it, be alert: this is indicative of a fake product.

3. The hexagon

Next, check the hexagon. If there is no Lot Number and/or a different font type is used compared to the one shown below left, it’s not an original product.

4. The C-Groove portion

Then look at the C-Groove portion of the spark plug. If you can see a machine cutting mark on the surface of the metal shell, again, this is a sign of a counterfeit.

5. The electrodes

Lastly, take a close look at the shape of the electrodes. If yours differs from the left-hand picture, be warned.

FCAI warning

FCAI boss and learner-rider Tony Weber says anyone purchasing parts outside the dealer network is at risk.

“The best way to avoid a fake? Make certain your parts are purchased from the authorised dealer network,” he says.

“We have experts examining the packaging and spark plugs and even they can barely tell the difference. You won’t know it’s a fake, until it’s too late.”

The automotive industry is working with relevant online trading platforms to remove listings and ban sellers of the illegal counterfeits from their sites.

It follows major hauls of fake motorcycle parts in India last year and a major haul of half a million fake and counterfeit vehicle parts seized in a raid in the United Arab Emirates in 2017.
