Honda blows recall on horn dropping off

Honda Motorcycles Australia has recalled 1400 CFR450L dual-sport bikes over an issue with the horn dropping off!

The official recall notice, issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says the horn bracket may fatigue and fracture “due to insufficient strength and riding vibrations”.

“If the horn bracket fractures, the horn may detach and increase the risk of an accident or injury to the rider and other road users,” the notice says.

Owners will be notified in writing to contact their nearest Honda Motorcycle dealer and arrange to have their motorcycle horn bracket replaced for free.

This is only the second recall Honda has issued this year.

The other involved a locking rear wheel on learner-approved  2019 CBF300N, 2018 CBR300R and 2017 CRF250L models.

Even though manufacturers and importers usually contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Oil leaks prompt BMW S 1000 RR recall

Oil leaks from cracks in the rubber hose of the BMW S 1000 RR’s oil cooler have prompted an Australian recall on the 2019 model.

The official notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says the oil leak may spray on to the rear wheel of the motorcycle “increasing the risk of an accident or serious injury to the rider and other road users”.

Owners should contact an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer, or call the BMW Group Australia Customer Interaction Centre on freecall 1800 813 299 to arrange for inspection and replacement of the oil cooler, where required.

The recall on oil leaks affects 77 bikes. The full list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) is included at the end of this article.

BMW Motorrad Australia has only made one other recall this year for the Indian-made G 310 motorcycles and new C 400 scooters last month over a problem with rusty brakes.

Consumers can also contact BMW Australia via the BMW Motorrad Australia Website.

Even though manufacturers and importers contact owners when a recall is issued, the bike may have been sold privately to a rider unknown to the company.

Rider dies after striking telegraph pole

A male rider has died after his motorcycle struck a telegraph pole in Ingleburn, south-west Sydney, yesterday (12 October 2019).

Police have identified the rider as a 49-year-old man from Macquarie Fields.

“He was riding a back FL series Harley-Davidson — witnesses said at high speed — when he hit the power pole,” police say.

“He sustained major head injuries, dying on impact.”

The crash happened about 12.50pm on Collins Promenade, Ingleburn.

Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

A 2017 United Nations road safety report recommended the removal of roadside hazards such as poles as they are a proven cause of serious motorcycle crash injuries and deaths.

The 108-page World Health Organisation “Powered two- and three-wheeler safety” report says a motorcycle crash with a fixed roadside hazard is 15 times more likely to be fatal than a crash on the ground with no physical contact with a fixed hazard.

They also increase the severity of injuries in such crashes, it says.

The WHO report also suggests the removable of other roadside hazards such as trees, guardrails, utility poles and drainage structures.

It says the severity of a motorcycle, scooter or powered-two- or three-wheeler (PTW) crash with a roadside object depends on the speed, impact angle, surface area of the object and the impact absorption properties of the object.

They cite a study that found roadside objects were the primary cause of fatalities and another Australian and New Zealand study presented at the 2015 Australasian Road Safety Conference that concluded that almost all roadside objects are hazardous to PTW users.

“This is mainly due to the fact that all objects have been designed for safety of cars and their occupants rather than for PTWs,” it says.

The report says creating a roadside “clear zone” would not only minimise the risk of a rider hitting a hazardous object, but also provide room for them to correct errors.

“Choice of location of roadside equipment used for lighting or signage can also have a negative impact on PTW safety,” it says.

“Guardrails and crash barriers are often used to separate vehicles from roadside hazards but the design of such devices needs to take motorcyclists into account.”

How will direct importing affect riders?

Ducati is the latest manufacturer to announce it will take over the direct import of its bikes into Australia from local company NF Importers next year.

It follows a similar announcement by KTM/Husqvarna earlier this year and Harley-Davidson about 15 years ago.

From next year there will be 11 direct importing manufacturers in our market and there could be more to follow.

So what does manufacturer direct importing mean for customers and dealers?

Retired industry veteran Stuart Strickland says there are both good and bad affects from direct manufacturer imports.

The 70-year-old has more than 40 years’ industry experience and was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2012 for his service to motorcycling. (See more career highlights at the end of this article.)

“My introduction to the motorcycle industry was at Milledge Brothers. Alex Milledge had a great relationship with his dealers. He was a consistent entity as were his dealers,” Stuart says.

“Policy was straightforward and consistent. His door was open to his dealers and together they did well selling bikes he imported.”

Stuart says that when manufacturers move into direct importing, their policy is “not straightforward and corporate manoeuvres occur regularly”.

“Senior appointments often come from head office without local industry knowledge.

“Their emphasis is mainly on ‘moving iron’,” he says.

“Factories may force their subsidiaries to take numbers local management don’t want.”

Stuart also says there can be a lack of talent among the Australian staff.

“Locals who work for the manufacturers can be an issue as they don’t have any skin in the game and it’s rare to find one who has actually run a successful business,” he says.

“Dealers get frustrated with the constant changes and the regretfully incompetent representatives appointed by incompetent management. It creates havoc for dealers who work under a dictatorial franchise system.”

Stuart says manufacturers do not seem concerned about the business viability of dealers.

“Rarely does return on investment get discussed,” he says.

“Dealers are issued with constant franchise breaches which are used to intimidate and wear down resistance to policy that is often unfair.”

Pricing motorcycles can be a complex issue for the direct importer, Stuart says.

One of the most vexing points for importers are the tax implications.

He says the tax office in the manufacturer’s home country as well as the export country each want their fair share of the manufacturer’s revenue.

“It’s easy for manufacturers to set pricing so they make more profit in their home country than in the subsidiaries countries,” he says.

“But the tax offices are on to this. They compare revenue and tax with like businesses and if they believe there is anything irregular there can be heavy fines.”

Stuart says exchange rates also have a huge impact on retail pricing.

“A weak Australia dollar is great for exporters but bad news for importers,” he says.

“No manufacturer wants to be sitting on piles of obsolete or uncompetitive models, impeding financial competence.”

He says there are many factors influencing retail price and buyers should be wary of manufacturers who get the local release price wrong.

This can result in massive discounting when the model fails to sell at a too-high price.

“This can have a huge impact on resale and trade values,” Stuart says.

Australia’s market size also has issues for direct importers on which models to import.

“A great degree of skill is required to pick models that the buyers want and more skill to price it right at introduction,” he says.

“Australia has very little if no influence on model development and currently sits in 32nd place in terms of volume in the world.”

However, he says companies such as Honda which he worked for have been able to use Australia to test new models.

“If they can get it wrong here, there isn’t too much global impact on the company.

“Although it’s not big, Australia is a sophisticated market, so it’s an excellent place to trial things.”

More direct imports?

Will more manufacturers decide to take over their own imports?

“There has to be a tipping point where they show interest,” Stuart says.

Ducati sold less than 2000 last year and the only brand with more sales that is not directly imported is Triumph (2122).

“Triumph would have to be having a look at it,” Stuart says.

“It all comes back to what the parent company is doing and whether they are interested in investing money and staff in Australia.”

Toby Price misses out on The Don Award

Double Dakar Rally champion Toby Price has missed out on the prestigious Don Award which has gone to tennis player Ash Barty.

Toby had been considered for the award announced last night (10 October 2019), but he did not even make the short list.

That included: tennis grand slam champion Dylan Alcott OAM, 2018 NRL premiership hero Cooper Cronk, three-time Tour de France stage winner Caleb Ewan, 2018 world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore, seven-time Bathurst winner Craig Lowndes OAM, Ashes winners Ellyse Perry and Tim Paine, and swimming world champion Ariarne Titmus.

In January, we put forward Toby’s name to the Australia Sport Hall of Fame Selection Committee and Board for consideration for The Don award named after Don Bradman.

Also, we also launched a petition calling for a national sporting honour for Toby. It attracted more than 15,000 signatures.

The petition is still live and relevant for consideration for next year’s Don Award.

And if Toby wins his third Dakar Rally in January 2020 when it moves from South America to Saudi Arabia the judges surely can’t ignore it.

The Don Award would be a fitting honour for Toby since it is given to a sportsperson who “inspires the nation” like Don Bradman.

The award began in 1998 when five-time world GP champion Mick Doohan was a finalist. The Don was shared that year by cricket captain Mark Taylor and athlete Heather Turland.

It will be difficult for Toby to win The Don as no motorsport identity has ever won.

Two-time MotoGP champion Casey Stoner is a three-time nominee and two-time finalist, but never a recipient of The Don. Last year F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo was a finalist on his second nomination, joined by Indy driver Will Power.

In March, Toby was awarded the inaugural Ronald J Walker Award for Excellence by the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame. 

However, we reckon it’s time for a motorcycle racer to win The Don. Hopefully, that will be next year!

Our petition also calls on state (Queensland and NSW) and federal sports ministers to consider Toby for a state or national sportsperson of the year honour.

Why Toby deserves an award

Australia has a long history of Dakar entries, most notably rookie and privateer Andy Haydon who placed third in 1998, Simon Pavey who competed 10 times and the late Andy Caldecott who competed from 2004 to 2006 when he tragically died during the race.

The Dakar is a gruelling rally that has claimed the lives of 24 competitors since it started in 1978. It is referred to as the toughest motorsport event in the world.

Toby started racing the lethal Dakar in 2015, finishing an astounding third on debut.

The following year he rode for the KTM Factory team and became the first Australian to win the rally.

He broke his leg in 2017 and last year finished third despite not racing for a year due to injury.

Just a month before this year’s Dakar, Toby broke his wrist in training. His second victory while nursing a “burning wrist” is all the more brave and worthy of an honour.

In fact, has been in for more surgery after the screw in his wrist wore away at the bone like a ‘windscreen wiper’ during the race.

Last year Toby also became the first Australian to win the FIM World Cross Country Championship and scored a record sixth win in Australia’s toughest motorcycle rally, the Finke Desert Race.

In fact, he won that race on debut, a feat he also achieved in the Hattah Dessert Race.

Toby has also won two Australian Junior Motocross Championships and the Australian Off-Road Racing Championship.

Dakar’s most prolific winner, Stéphane Peterhansel, scored his sixth win the year he turned 33. Marc Coma won his fifth Dakar Rally at the age of 39. So Toby, aged 31, still has several years of racing ahead of him and is hopeful of more Dakar wins.

Bushfires close northern NSW roads

The popular motorcycle routes of Summerland Way and the Gwydir Highway in northern NSW are closed due to bushfires.

An 11km stretch of Summerland Way between Leeville and Whiporie and a 5km section of the Gwydir Highway from east of Jackadgery to Eatonsville are closed for back burning and tree clearing.

The highway is also closed between Ramornie Station and Tindal roads.

Riders should consider alternate routes.

Emergency work being carried out includes specialists examining trees along and nearby the road to assess and manage the risk of them falling, inspecting road infrastructure such as bridges, culverts and safety barriers, as well as clearing debris from the road.

Meanwhile, there are also bushfire cautions about riding through areas of south east Queensland.

Before heading off this weekend, riders should check online for bushfires in Queensland and in NSW on the RFS or SES websites.

Riders should be aware of the dangers of riding in bushfire areas and of accidentally starting bushfires in the current tinder-dry drought conditions.

By all means riders should head out into the country to spend their much-needed dollar in drought-stricken areas, but they should also be alert to the bushfire conditions.

Dangers of bushfires

Bushfires can spread rapidly and even outrun a vulnerable rider.

But rural fire services also say several fires have been sparked by motorcycles.

They say about 40% of all bushfires are accidentally started by humans dropping cigarette butts, campfires, discarding bottles, sparks from machinery and motorcycles.

However, there is also the possibility of fires being started by road bikes if the rider pulls over to the side of the road where they may be long, dry grass.

The bike’s engine, exhaust, or catalytic convertor can be hot enough to set grass alight.

Tips to avoid dehydration in a heatwave:

  1. Don’t drink too much alcohol the night before a ride. It has a diuretic effect which means it causes you to urinate more water than you take in which means you are losing fluid. And you can’t counteract that by drinking lots of water because most of it will go out in your urine. Obviously, don’t drink alcohol while you are riding!
  2. Start drinking water as soon as you wake and keep sipping water right up until you get on your bike. It takes about half an hour for water to reach your muscles. Guzzling water just before a ride is not good as it can make your stomach to cramp. The Royal Flying Doctor Service which has attended dehydrated riders in the Outback, recommends carrying 10 litres of water per day! Read their Outback riding tips here.
  3. Wear ventilated motorcycle clothing. Leathers may protect you better in a crash, but they create a “microclimate” which impairs your ability to lose heat. As a result you will produce more sweat to decrease your core temp. Instead, wear a flow-through jacket. There are heaps of options on the market. Make sure they have vents in the back so the air flows through. Also, loosen the sleeves so you get plenty of air on your wrists which have a lot of blood vessels close to the skin to effectively cool you down. However, be aware that a flow-through jacket cools you down because it is drying the sweat off your skin which can lead to dehydration. A set of Ventz up your sleeve will also keep you cool as air flows up your arms.However, don’t be fooled by your level of coolness as ventilation can also cause you to loose more water through evaporation. So you still need to keep drinking plenty of water.

  4. Don’t be tempted to remove your jacket in the heat! Exposed skin may feel cooler, but that’s because the sweat is evaporating quicker, but that is just making you more dehydrated. And while your skin feels cool, you’ll be tricked into staying in the sun longer which leads to sunburn. That also leads to dehydration because your body needs water to repair and renew damaged skin.
  5. Get a Camelbak or other brand of water-dispensing unit so you can continue to take small sips of water while you are riding. I’ve seen riders on GoldWings and other big tourers with cup holders so they can take slurps from a water bottle. That’s obviously not as safe as the hands-free Camelback option, but anything is better than nothing. Some people don’t like Camelbaks because the water gets hot, but the temperature of the water doesn’t affect dehydration.Camelbak reduces dehydration heatwave dust storm
  6. Stop more often than usual and hang out in the shade or in an air-conditioned cafe. Since you are drinking lots of fluids, you will probably need to stop anyway!
  7. While you’re stopped, have a coffee, but take it easy. No need to swear off your favourite caramel latte, but avoid excess coffee. That also goes for caffeinated drinks such as Red Bull. High levels of caffeine have a diuretic effect just like alcohol.
  8. While having a coffee break, avoid having too many sweet cakes, donuts and muffins. Sugar can dehydrate you if it gets to very high levels in your blood. This can happen if you are a diabetic, take certain medications or have an infection or some organ diseases. Sugar causes your kidneys to produce more urine to eliminate the sugar, leading to dehydration. Likewise, don’t drink too many sugary drinks. Best to stick to plain water, real fruit juices with no added sugar or drinks such as Gatorade that replace salts and minerals lost in sweat.
  9. We’ve talked a lot about urine and it’s important that you monitor the colour. It should be a straw colour. If it’s too dark, you are dehydrated.
  10. Sweat also depletes your body of sodium and if it becomes too low, it can cause many of the same symptoms as dehydration. The average diet probably has enough sodium, but it’s good to have a little bit of salt on your meals or drink sports drinks that have a sodium supplement. However, beware of sports drinks with caffeine and sugar.
  11. Ok, I know I said there were only 10 tips, but dehydration doesn’t just occur in a heatwave. In winter, the cold can shut off the body’s thirst mechanism and trick you into thinking you’re not sweating. Meanwhile, your body is losing fluids as the air passes over your body.

3 hit-run drivers appear in NSW courts

Three drivers appeared in NSW courts this week on charges related to leaving the scenes of crashes that injured two motorcyclists, a pillion and a scooter rider.

One of the drivers remains in jail, the other two are on strict bail conditions.

The accidents happened in April, August and September and the appearances in NSW courts resulted in the matters again being deferred several weeks.

In the first incident in April 2019, Molly Cahill, 22, of Sans Souci, was committed to stand trial after driving her car on the wrong side of the road and crashing into a motorcycle, injuring rider Tony Nissirios, 38, and his female pillion, Sam, 26.

She faces two charges of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and render assistance after impact and not keeping left of a dividing line.

Her original bail conditions of a strict curfew, passport confiscation and daily reports to police were expanded when she last appeared.

She has also been ordered not to enter any international points departure, live at a specific address, not take any drugs or alcohol unless prescribed by a doctor and not occupy the driver’s seat of any vehicle.

Her hearing was this week adjourned in Sutherland Local Court to now be heard on October 31 at Sydney Downing Centre in Liverpool St.

Hit-run 2

Paul Andrew Brown, 55, remains in jail after appearing in Burwood Local Court this week over charges of failing to stop after colliding with a Vespa scooter rider in Sydney in August.

The Toyota Hilux ute driver was charged with failing to stop and render aid, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and not exchange particulars.

The rider of the scooter, a 34-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit found Brown’s ute parked in North Strathfield about 2.30pm the day after the crash.

After a short foot pursuit, police arrested Brown and took him to Burwood Police Station where he was refused bail.

Brown has now faced Burwood Local Court twice and the matter has been adjourned to November 5 with bail again refused.

In September, SUV driver Daniel Marjoribanks was charged after allegedly running a red light and hitting a rider at the intersection of Schofields and Windsor roads, Rouse Hill.

“The driver allegedly turned right against the red arrow and struck a motorcycle which was being ridden north through the intersection,” police will allege.

The motorcyclist, a 63-year-old man, suffered multiple compound fractures to his right leg and fractured ribs.

Marjoribanks was charged with:

  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm;
  • Negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm;
  • Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm;
  • Fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury;
  • Drive when visiting privileges withdrawn – first offence; and
  • Not give particulars to injured person.

He was granted bail and appeared again in Blacktown Local Court yesterday where the matter was adjourned for mention on November 22.

Spate of hit-and-runs in courts

Our courts seem to be busy with this worrying spate of hit-and-run crashes leaving motorcyclists injured and dead.

We will continue to follow up on these hit-run incidents, as well as the matter of unlicensed British driver Graham Belcher who has been remanded in custody after an incident last month in which one rider died and another was injured.

Belcher, 52, was arrested at Brisbane International Airport as he was about to board a flight to Hong Kong.

He appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court charged with an outstanding warrant, as well as:

  • dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous;
  • fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death;
  • negligent driving (occasioning death);
  • cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle;
  • drive while licence cancelled;
  • not give way to vehicle (give way sign/line); and
  • driver fails/refuses to disclose his identity.

Bail was refused and he was remanded in custody until November 20.

Having a motorcycle is a great experience for many people. Around 13 million Americans are proud owners of motorcycles. However, these vehicles are known to have a high accident and injury risk, which is a concerning factor for many owners.

Motorcycles parked out in the open are more prone to vandalism, exterior damage (dings, scratches, dents etc.) and theft. You could strategically place a mounted camera to help catch a vandal or a thief. Another step to prevent theft is to supplement your on-board security camera with an anti-theft device like alarms and disc locks.

Is a Motorcycle Cam Only for Accidents & Damage?

Honestly, a mounted camera is a very useful piece of equipment to have for issues involving crashes, damages, theft and collecting evidence to use in court.

On the lighter side of things, a mounted camera can be used for photography and videography reasons too. If you are the creative type, a safe and hands-free way to take snapshots or videos, is to use a helmet camera such as a GoPro, if you want capture some scenery or document your adventures on the road for a montage you want to share with your buddies online.

Although they are not very common, motorcycle shipping scams are, a small yet unfortunate part of the industry. It makes all auto transport companies look bad when these scams occur, even the reputable ones.

It is better to just avoid any outlier super low pricing when you are comparing prices from different motorcycle shipping companies. Be sure to read online reviews from sites like Google as well.
    • Lead provider sites – This is essentially any site that promises quotes from multiple companies rather than providing one quote of their own. What’s really going on when you get a quote to ship your motorcycle from one of these sites is that they are taking your information and selling it to other companies. These companies will take your info and will spam you with calls and e-mails until it drives you to the point of having to change your number and/or e-mail.
  • Carriers without an online presence – These companies generally tend to be “mom and pop” type businesses with just a handful of auto haulers and drivers. The fact that they don’t have a website or online reviews is a major red flag. They might be nice, honest, down-to-earth folks but there’s no way of knowing you can trust them for sure. Avoid these types of companies at all costs.

How to spot a scam

There are a few sure-fire ways to spot a moto transport scam:

    • Too good to be true pricing – As we stated earlier in this post, carriers or brokers that undercut the competition by a wide margin will inevitably add on very large hidden fees after transport has already started. If you refuse this payment, they might possibly threaten to withhold your bike.

Whether you choose to ship your motorcycle with a carrier or broker, make sure you select a trustworthy business. Get all the info you can about your potential motorcycle transporter – name, address, phone numbers, MC number and as much info as possible about their insurance policy. Contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and check to see if the auto transport company’s license is currently active. Use Google to verify they are a real business. Google takes verifying businesses information very seriously, if the company has a verified address on Google Maps, that is another good sign.

Be sure once you have gathered all of this information that it all checks out. For example, if their site lists a phone number and you try to call, and the number isn’t working, or no one picks up during normal business hours (depending on what time zone they’re located in) then there is a decent chance that it is some sort of scam.

If everything else checks out and you are able to contact them over the phone be sure you ask questions. Don’t be afraid to be thorough either. In fact, see if you can get some customer references so you can verify that they’ve done good business in the recent past.

Also, be sure that once you are ready to book your shipment that you go over the terms of service with a representative. Once you have the agreement, look over the agreement and scrutinize it. It is crucial to acquaint yourself with every detail. Pay close attention to the points which are written in fine print. This is a good measure to take even though you likely got a confirmation e-mail explaining everything. Rider dies in driveway crash

A 51-year-old man has died after his motorcycle was hit by a 4WD attempting to turn into a driveway in Parkinson, south of Brisbane this afternoon (9 October 2019).

Queensland Police say the accident occurred just after 3.30pm when a Nissan Patrol was travelling along Precinct Street.

They say the SUV attempted to turn into a driveway and collided with the motorcycle.

“Emergency services were called and rendered assistance to the motorcyclist. The 51-year-old man died on scene as a result of his injuries,” police say.

“The 19-year-old male driver of the Nissan Patrol did not suffer any physical injury.”

Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
