Safety advocate seeks motorcycle funds

A motorcycle safety advocate who crashed his motorcycle has launched a GoFundMe page to replace it so he can continue his advocacy work and support his sick wife.

John Nelson, 63, says he crashed his Honda NT700V Deauville in country Victoria in June 2019 while taking a friend to pick up his new motorcycle.

Due to his injuries and other health issues, he can no longer work.

He also could not afford comprehensive insurance and now cannot afford a replacement bike which he needs as his only form of transport.

“I need a bike to continue my advocacy work and to support my wife who is becoming very ill from complications with Type 2 Diabetes,” John says.

“My need for another bike is so that I will be able to do my thing.

“I don’t think that 32 years as a volunteer is going to upset anyone if I ask for help to continue with my passion for motorcycling and safety.”

He hopes to replace his written-off Honda with another NT700V Deauville and has kicked off his GoFundMe campaign to raise $7000. So far he has $100 from two donors.

“I was very active in the 1990s and the 2010s, but have stepped up in the past five years,” he says.

“My resources and funding are non existent. I don’t have a computer, just an old iPhone.

“I have made a significant contribution for motorcyclists’ safety and I want to continue my work.

“I have a few significant achievements in this game, breaking down some barriers in recognition of the Elizabeth St bike precinct in Melbourne and lobbying for and achieving registration and licensing of motorcycles (mostly Harleys) for joy rides for the public.”

John is also a qualified Tour Guide and motorcycle tourism consultant to regional shires.

GoFundMe started for rider’s family

A GoFundMe page has started for the family of Brian Carter, a father of four who died when his motorcycle collided head-on with a Toyota last Friday on the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland Police say Brian, 37, was riding south on the Nambour Connection Rd at Parklands when it collided with the car heading in the opposite direction from the Bruce Highway offramp about 11.30am.

“The rider was taken to Nambour Hospital but was declared deceased shortly afterwards,” police say.

A GoFundMe page for Brian’s family has now been started and already raised more than $11,000.

Brian leaves behind his wife Alana and their four young daughters.

Family, friends and the motorcycle community are asked to go to the GoFundMe page help raise some financial support for this young family in their time of need.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been travelling in the area at the time of the crash or has dash cam vision to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Support fire-ravaged Gingers Creek rider cafe

Popular Oxley Highway riders’ rest stop Gingers Creek Bush Resort is struggling after bushfires closed the road a month ago with clean-up keeping it closed indefinitely.

Owner and Ducati Hypermotard rider Gary Hartas says the bushfires burnt down their accommodation (above), but the cafe is untouched.

“The shop is fine, just the accommodation down the back,” Gary says.

“The fires are still burning up the road. All the grass and highway around us is now burnt.

“The clean-up on the highway will take a while to clear up.”

So staff member Tiohnee Ford has started a GoFundMe page to support Gary while the road is closed and no income is coming in.

In the past coupe of days almost $2000 has been raised.

“Tomorrow (23 November 2019) will be a month that the highway has been shut,” Gary says.

“The RMS (Roads and Maritime Services) can’t give me an answer on when it will open.

Just abit of the Oxley this morning, don’t see it being open this week.

“Maybe another month. I heard talk about even January.

“Losing lots, mate.”

We also asked the RMS and they could not give us an answer.

Meanwhile, the NSW Rural Fire Service website shows a bushfire still burning just south of Gingers Creek.

Motorbike Writer reader Ron Grant is a regular visitor to Gingers Creek after hitting the adventure trails in the area.

He says he is concerned that without an income it could be all over for the business.

“I am personally prepared to tip in some dollars to ensure it continues,” he says.

Funding plea for injured Victorian couple

A Victorian couple on a dream riding holiday through Europe are now fighting for their lives after being crushed by a tractor trailer on the Stevio Pass in northern Italy last month.

Richard Hogg, 65, and wife Lorna, 62, have only recently started breathing on their own as they recover from induced comas in an Austrian hospital.

A GoFundMe page has already raised more than $30,000 to help fund their medical bills, but more is needed for the extensive costs.

Tragedy strikes couple

The recently retired couple and seasoned riders were on a “dream holiday” with a motorcycle tour group when tragedy struck, says son Paul who rushed to Austria to be by their bedsides.

“They were riding on the Stelvio Pass in Italy and were approaching a left-hand corner when a tractor and trailer came round the corner and rolled, crushing them and injuring others,” he says.

The couple was airlifted to a nearby hospital, which wasn’t equipped to handle the severity of their injuries.

They were then rushed to University Hospital in Austria where they have both since been in induced comas while in and out of surgeries.

Both suffered leg and pelvis injuries, Lorna had a leg amputated and Richard has suffered a ruptured aorta.

Richard also suffered a minor stroke but due to his heavy sedation the impact is not yet known, says Paul.

“When they will be home is very uncertain; possibly a minimum of two months before we are home,” he says.

“Mum has another surgery on her leg tomorrow to hopefully close the wound and dad has his major pelvis reconstruction. We are also still waiting on his MRI results on his spine.”

Fund raising

Their nephew, Riley Cox, has set up the GoFundMe page to cover their enormous medical bills.

“Lorna & Dicko have spent their whole lives caring and looking after others and now they need us,” Riley says.

“They are two of the most caring, kind, determined and positive people, that even during retirement, live life to the fullest, travelling to the other side of the world on a dream holiday.”

Riley says all funds donated will help cover medical costs and repatriation to Australia, as well as ongoing rehab costs.

“Due to the severity of their injuries we don’t know how long it will be until we can bring them home, but we do know it will be a long recovery in Austria away from family and friends, followed by a long healing journey back home in Australia,” he says.
