Harley unleashes 131 Screamin’ cubes

Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagles factory customs department has unleashed its biggest engine yet, the 131-cube (2147cc) crate motor.

The Screamin’ Eagle Milwaukee Eight 131 Crate Engine features the same 114mm (4.5”) stroke as the 114 Milwaukee Eight, but has been bored out from 101mm (4”) to 109mm (4.31”).

Harley claims it makes 90kW (121hp) of power and 177Nm (131ft-lb) of torque when matched to the Screamin’ Eagle Street Cannon mufflers. It also requires an ECM calibration and Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner.

That’s a lot of grunt, but still not comparable to the Triumph Rocket 3 which last year went from 2.3 litres to 2.5 litres with 123kW (165hp) at 6000rpm, up 11% over the previous model, and 220Nm (163ft/lb) of peak torque at 4000rpm.

That makes the Trumpy the biggest torque monster of any production bike in the world.

Price and availability

The 131-cube monster, as well as the recently introduced Screamin’ Eagle Milwaukee-Eight 107″/ 114″ and 128″/131” Stage IV Kits, are not in the Aussie 2020 HD catalogue.

However, Harley-Davidson Australia spokesman Keith Waddell says they are “very excited to have these performance parts in ANZ and will provide an update when these parts are available for sale”.

We believe the parts are being homologated.

In the US, the price is $US6195 ($A9000) for the 131 oil-cooled version and $US6395 ($A9360) for the twin-cooled motor.

You could expect to pay around $A10,000 for the Screamin’ Eagle 131 crate motor, given a CVO 117 motor costs about $A7400.

Harley’s Screamin’ Eagle Milwaukee Eight 131 Crate Engine bolts straight into 2017 and later Touring models running an oil-cooled or twin-cooled Milwaukee Eight engine.

With a compression ratio of 10:7:1, you will have to be careful on downshifts not to lock the rear wheel.

You will also be paying more to fuel up with high-flow fuel injectors that guzzle fuel at a rate of 5.5-grams a second.

There are bigger accessory motors available for Harley’s and other big twins, but Harley-Davidson Product Manager James Crean says their engine’s raw grunt is matched by factory-made reliability and a 12-month or 24-month factory limited warranty.

It comes in black/chrome or black/gloss black with 131 Stage IV badging on the cylinder heads and timer cover.

Harley Trikes recalled for electronic related brake issue | MY 19-20

Motorcycle Recall Notice

Today an official recall was issued for Harley-Davidson Trike models sold in Australia from March 12, 2018 through to November 5, 2019.

There are 363 trikes affected by this safety issue that relates to possible faulty brake application by the electronically controlled EHCU, that might stem from a faulty rear wheel speed signal.

The CVO Tri Glide, Tri Glide Ultra and Freewheeler are all affected and owners should contact Harley-Davidson to have the fault rectified at their earliest convenience.

Harley pulls out of Walcha Motorcycle Festival

Harley-Davidson has pulled out of the Walcha Motorcycle Festival due to the current bushfire threat, but the event will still go on from Friday (15-17 November 2019).

Walcha Royal Cafe owner Toni Keable says HOG members from Perth have already arrived and many more have said they are still coming.

“There’s no change at Walcha. We’re still going ahead with the festival,” she says.

The festival was put together by the town after the last-minute cancellation of the Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles and national Harley Owners Group (HOG) rally when the organisers went into liquidation.

Earlier this week Walcha Tourism said the event would go ahead despite the current bushfire situation.

However, late this afternoon Harley-Davidson Australia issued this statement:

The bushfire situation across New South Wales and the progressive dangers across the state has meant that Harley-Davidson Australia has made the difficult decision not to attend the Walcha Motorcycle Weekend this coming weekend, 15-17th November.

Harley-Davison Australia have been monitoring the bushfire situation and have been in ongoing contact with the Walcha Council and NSW Rural Fire Service to understand if it is safe for Harley-Davidson and our H.O.G. members to attend.  

Since Tuesday 12th November 2019, the NSW Premier has declared a State of Emergency with dangerous conditions across New South Wales, advising motorists to delay all non-essential travel with many highways and motorways closed.

All H.O.G. members planning to attend the event have been contacted.

From everyone at Harley-Davidson Australia, we ask all riders to remain safe and alert.

Toni believes the statement is a “safety precaution”.

“It is probably for insurance purposes not to leave themselves in a position of danger if something happens,” she says.

“We’ve had people arriving all week. We’ve also had people ring and say ‘we’re coming, we’ll get there, we will find a way’.

“Some of the roads are closed but some are still open. Everywhere there is a closed road, there is an alternative route.”

Riders should check www.livetraffic.com.au and www.google.com/maps for road closures before attempting to ride to Walcha.

Meanwhile, the main attraction in getting to Walcha is the Oxley Highway which remains closed, not by fires but the high risk from falling burnt limbs after fires earlier this week.

Official advice is that motorists should avoid unnecessary travel and be prepared for conditions to change quickly and roads to close suddenly.

Riders should make sure they have water, food, supplies and a full tank of fuel. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before you set out.

If you’re already travelling when a bush fire starts, follow the directions of emergency services personnel.

Walcha Motorcycle Weekend revs up

The Walcha Motorcycle Weekend revs up from tomorrow (15-17 November 2019) to replace the Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles and national Harley Owners Group (HOG) rally which were axed at the last minute.

Among the many highlights will be the chance for riders to hear Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire electric motorcycle and even go for a “demo ride” on their Jumpstart Experience.

Harley-Davidson Australia spokesman Keith Waddell says they have been “working closely with Walcha Council to support their plans to host riders with music and food options over the weekend”.

The company will set up at the Walcha Showground and will run demo rides over the weekend.

Meanwhile, he says the liquidators of the two axed events are “working through the required processes on asset and refund retrieval for all involved”.

“As this process may take some time, Harley-Davidson will refund the $99 HOG ticket cost directly to members,” he says.

“All HOG ticket holders have been contacted directly to arrange those refunds.”

The liquidators have not yet provided any details on refunds for Freak Show ticket holders.

Liquidation

The original twin events were organised by Inside Line Events International which was behind the aborted TT events planned for either the Oxley Highway or the Sunshine Coast.

Freak Show Festival organiser David Rollins sent us this formal statement:

The organisers of the Freak Show Festival of motorcycles regret to inform that the event has been forced into voluntary liquidation due to difficulties maintaining ongoing support from sponsors

The organisers are personally and financially devastated by this outcome, having poured considerable money into the event as well as time.

A liquidator has been appointed. All ticketing and trade enquires should be addressed to Wexted Pty Ltd, Level 12, 28 O’Connell Street, Sydney NSW 2000. E: [email protected]

He says there is “not much I can add to it for legal reasons”.

More than 1000 tickets had been sold and they claimed they were expecting about 5000 to attend.

Freak show

The Freak Show Festival was to include a flat track, a dirt hill climb, custom motorcycles, the Globe of Death, wheelies, stoppies and burnouts, a ride-in cinema playing motorcycle-themed movies, live music and food and beverages.

It was scheduled for one weekend after the Australian Motorcycle Festival (formerly the Sydney Moto Expo) in Wollongong from November 8-10.

The show and rally were also sponsored by NSW Tourism Department who expected it to deliver more than $1.7 million in visitor expenditure to the region.

More details around Harley-Davidson’s expanding range for 2020 have emerged at EICMA, with further information released on the Pan America, as well as new Bronx models.

Both will feature a new Harley-Davidson powerplant, called the Revolution Max which will come in two capacity versions, a 975 cc for the Bronx streetfighter, and a 1250 cc version for the Pan America.

Revolution Max will be a 60-degree V-twin with liquid-cooling and dual down-draft throttle-bodies. The 975cc version is expected to produce 115 hp and 70 lbs-ft (95 Nm) of torque.

The 1250 Revolution Max is expected to produce 145 hp and 90 lbs-ft of torque (122 Nm), although these figures are all performance targets from Harley-Davidson, so we could expect to see some change as we get closer to the release date.

The Revolution Max will be run as a stressed member of the frame and will feature a counter-balancer to mitigate engine vibration, with Harley promising a ‘surge of high-rpm power’ with a more performance orientated design approach obviously being taken.

Harley have also announced they collaborated with Brembo to create a new radial monobloc four-piston caliper for these machines.

Both models feature dual front disc brakes with the new Brembo caliper and upside-down forks, as well as a monoshock rear.

A trellis-style sub-frame is visible on the Pan America and looks designed to feature plenty of luggage along with reasonable pillion perches.

Hand-guards and an adjustable screen are featured, along with crash bars that may be standard fitment and look well integrated into the Pan America. Hard panniers are also shown in some shots, and look to mount via integrated mounting points, alongside a pillion grab rail.

Final drive is chain on the Pan America, with a large digital display and cruise control switches on the left switchblock. A steering damper is also visible.

The Bronx features a belt final drive in the images provided, with the same switchblock as the Pan America with cruise control, and a single round digital dash.

Compression and rebound adjustment is also visible on the fork tops, with flat bars.

Harley-Davidson trademarks Rude Boy

Harley-Davidson trademarks often end up as names for their motorcycles, but in this case, Rude Boy will be used for their upcoming range of electric bicycles.

The company has struck some trouble with the recent launch of their LiveWire electric motorcycle:

  • The bike was delayed a month going into North America dealerships;
  • Several dealerships refused to pay big money to instal DC fast chargers in order to sell them;
  • Sales have also been a disaster as customers have baulked at the $US29,950 (about $A44,000 when it arrives in Australia late next year) ticket price; and
  • They temporarily pulled the plug on production to fix a problem with one charger.

Rude Boy electric bicycles

The company has filed its application for the Rude Boy trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for use with “electric bicycles; electric bicycle parts and accessories”.

Harley already has a Fat Boy Softail motorcycle which has been a huge success over the years, so they will be hoping for the same with with Rude Boy.

So far Harley has shown three pedal-assisted electric bicycles, an electric scooter and electric balance bikes for kids.

With Harley sales down and an ageing demographic, the company is keen to bring in new, younger customers.

This shift toward two-wheeled electric bicycles is part of their future-proofing strategy.

Harley has previously shown their electric mountain bike (above) and their electric bicycle prototypes (below) under the “Future Vehicles” tab on their website.

It says they are not yet available for sale, but “coming soon” and “future models shown may not be available in all markets”.

They include mid-mounted electric motors, belt drive and one with a step-through “female” frame.

Harley-Davidson plugs LiveWire back in

Production of the Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire motorcycle has started again after being stalled a few days this week over a problem with one home charger.

The company says it was only a “single occurrence”. There was no problem with the motorcycle, only the charger.

“We take pride in our rigorous quality assurance measures and our drive to deliver the world’s best motorcycles,” their press statement says.

They had asked owners only to charge their bikes with the DC fast charger supplied at some HD dealerships. However, they say it is now safe to use any method to charge them.

Even though it doesn’t arrive in Australia until late next year, Harley-Davidson Australia had issued this statement:

As we lead in the electrification of motorcycles, we have delivered our first LiveWire motorcycles to authorized LiveWire dealers. We recently discovered a non-standard condition during a final quality check; stopped production and deliveries; and began additional testing and analysis, which is progressing well. We are in close contact with our LiveWire dealers and customers and have assured them they can continue to ride LiveWire motorcycles. As usual, we’re keeping high quality as our top priority.

We also asked how many Aussie orders they had and how many dealers were installing the DC fast charger:

We are not in a position to share any specific details and we are currently working closely with our dealer network as we get ready to welcome what will be a very exciting product for Australian and New Zealand customers.

Phone and other electrical devices can have issues with chargers overheating and causing a fire.

In March, the entire fleet of 18 Energica electric motorcycles for the MotoE series were destroyed in a blaze that was blamed on a short circuit in one of the charging units.

Electric fires

Electric vehicle and charger fires can be caused by short-circuits, power surges, impact, excessive discharge or overheating.

They also cause special concerns for fire fighters.

Lithium batteries are obviously made with lithium which is highly flammable and stored in mineral oil.

While it is not toxic, it can cause nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, muscle weakness, fatigue and a dazed feeling.

Electric vehicle and battery fires can also release sulphuric acid, carbon monoxide, copper and cobalt.

Fire fighters can’t douse the flames with water as the high voltage can cause an electric shock or electrocution.

Instead, they have to disconnect the power supply (usually an orange plug) and contain the fire to let it burn itself out.

This temporary hiccup with Harley’s electric motorcycle program follows a month delay in deliveries to US dealerships where it has created a lot of interest, but not a lot of sales.

Buyers are apparently baulking at the $US29,990 price (about $A44,000).

Some dealers are even rejecting the expensive DC fast-charger installation which is a requirement of being able to sell the bike.

So Harley has two major PR exercises going at the moment to rescue the LiveWire.

Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor are currently shooting Long Way Up from the bottom to the top of the Americas, riding LiveWire motorcycles.

And now HD has brought in Hollywood action star Jason Momoa who plays Aquaman and Khal Drogo to test ride the bike.

“Harley wanted me to test one of the new LiveWires, I was kind of like ehhh. I like the idea of it but I wanted to hear it,” says Jason who is more at home on pushrod fuel burners.

While filming on the Gold Coast in 2017, he took delivery of a Softail.

Now he says he is stoked by the electric bike.

“I have never been on anything this fast, it kind of blew my mind,” he says.

“I am in love with it, it’s amazing and I look forward to the future of many more of these bikes.

“It’s so fast, faster than I need, it’s amazing. It’s good for the planet, beautiful, we’re moving with the times.

“Best part is, it’s the future. You can have this and your old one. It’s amazing.”

Harley is going to need a lot of star power to help the LiveWire over this current short circuit!

‘Roaring Sporties’ to Return to Australian Racetracks in 2020

After an absence of two decades Harley Sportsters are set to thunder around Australian racetracks again in 2020 thanks to some divine intervention by Eddy Garner. 

In its heyday the Harley Sportster series once raced at selected rounds of the Australian Superbike Championship but the rebirth of the category will be run with the national OzBEARS series. The first round of which takes place over the Easter weekend at Mount Gambier’s McNamara Park.

It was an extremely competitive category with full grids of 30-plus booming Harley-Davidson 1200cc V-Twins Sportsters lining up on the grids with riders like Robbie Phillis, John Allen, Len Willing, Robbie Hermans, Wayne Clarke, Cameron Donald and the late Kirk McCarthy punting them around at astonishing velocities, on a bike that was not considered to be the best handling machine to ever grace a racetrack.

The Sporties didn’t have the outright speed of a pure race-bike but the corner speeds and close proximity racing combined with the thunderous roar of a freight-train of the  V-Twins on full noise made them a popular attraction. 

In 2020 the Harleys will return, en masse, with the re-birth of the V-Twin class as part of the national OzBEARS series. Over a dozen riders have already committed to the first round. 

The series itself will be national with rounds in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

However, unlike the past, the new look series will feature two classes: one for the traditional Harley-Davidson 1200cc Sportster machines, while the second class will be open to the newer XG750 Harley-Davidson Street Rod.

As for the Sportsters the class is open to all models including the ‘Classic’ pre-2002 models and ‘Superstock’ specification machines.  The class will also be open to the current Sportsters with inverted forks, the XG750’s and Sportster-engined Buells, with all bikes competing in the same race.

The bikes will run on treaded-tyres with tyre warmers allowed. 

The reintroduction of the series is the brainchild of long-time racer and Harley-Davidson aficionado, Eddy Garner, who has never let his passion for the race series wane.

Step up to Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special

The 2019 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special is a massive step up in technology, but not price.

It now includes the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) introduced in the electric LiveWire which will be available in Australia late next year.

RDRS affects chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology, basically providing a safer, more enjoyable riding experience for just $500 more than last year.

And that’s despite the fact that the Australian dollar has fallen more than 16% since January 2018 against the US dollar.

I’ve ridden Harley’s Street Glides for many years now and can understand why it is their top-selling Touring model.

What makes it “Special” is the big 114-cube Milwaukee Eight engine with a whopping 163Nm of torque.

Despite all that thump, there is no clunk on start-up. In fact, it is a refined mill married to a finessed transmission where neutral is no longer difficult to find.Step up to 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special

What also makes it Special is the step up in rider-aid technology.

Their RDRS features cornering-enhanced traction control, cornering ABS, linked brakes, tyre pressure monitors,  a slipper clutch (Drag-torque Slip Control System) to prevent rear-wheel lock-ups on aggressive downshifts and even assistance to prevent you rolling backward on hill starts!

The suite of rider controls combine to provide more confidence, especially in wet or slippery road conditions.

But they don’t get in the way of your enjoyment.

In fact, you don’t really know they are there until you need them.

On a couple of my exploratory rides through the Sunshine Coast hinterland, I ended up on dirt roads and was glad to feel the engine falter as the back wheel lost traction.

It’s a soft intervention that allows a little bit of wheel spin, but not out of control.

If the conditions get extra slippery or the roads are wet, simply toggle the left switch block traction control (TC) button to bring up the blue cloud and rain symbol on the dashboard. This totally eliminates any wheel spin.Step up to 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special

Step up to cornering aids

I also accidentally discovered the joys of Harley’s step up to cornering-enhanced linked braking and traction controls on the tight and twisty Bellthorpe Range Rd.

I came around a blind corner a little too eagerly only to find a peacock strutting its stuff across the gravelly road.

My right foot was not perched ready over the rear brake to tuck the bike into a tighter line, so I grabbed the front brake, instead.

Normally this would stand the bike up and point me directly at the peacock. But because the brakes are linked and “enhanced” for cornering, it allowed me to steer around the strutting bird.

The sprinkling of gravel also activated the Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS).

While no amount of electronic rider aids is a replacement for a step up in skill levels, it does save your bacon when a bit of inattention and bad luck could otherwise have dire results.

As for the Vehicle Hold Control (VHC), it’s actually quite handy at the traffic lights.

All you do is add a bit of extra brake lever pressure when you come to a stop and it will hold the bike and allow you to relax at the lights without having to hang on to the brakes.

It lets go as soon as you let out the clutch or activate the throttle for a smooth and faultless hillstart. That’s reassuring when you are on a steep incline with a full load and a pillion!

Infotainment

I’m not a big fan of built-in infotainment systems where the music is inaudible at anything over 80km/h.

However, the integrated BOOM! Box GTS infotainment system on this bike works well.

I love the fact that the bike asks you if you would like to guided to the nearest service station if you are low on fuel or tyre pressure.

It has a TFT display with edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass that is touch sensitive, even with gloves and in the wet.

You can also control all functions from the two handlebar toggle switches.

For an extra $300 (approx) you can fit a wireless interface module that adds Apple CarPlay for access to some of your iPhone apps.

Or you can press the speech button to activate Siri and tell the system what to do.

Next year, Aussie buyers will also have access to Harley’s subscription-based OneConnect app that alerts the owner to tampering or theft and provides real-time tracking.

Handling

Suspension was updated the previous year.

It comes with Showa Dual-Bending Valve forks with bigger pistons for improved damping that takes away that “jackhammer” affect through the grips while retaining a sharp and light steering feel.

At the back, Harley moved from air shocks to emulsion shocks with 15-30% more preload adjustment using a single hand-adjustable knob behind the left pannier.

Ride quality is firm, but not harsh.

However, the rear shock is a bit short for bumpy roads and heavy loads, although I never got it to bottom out.

The first hint of summer arrived just in time for my test.

It’s always going to be hot sitting on top of massive V-twin behind a “barn door” fairing.

However, Harley has advanced the ignition, dropped the rear header down from the exhaust port and moved the catalytic converter rearwards to make it cooler for the rider.

It still gets hot in slow traffic and your pillion’s right leg cops a lot of the hot air that has been moved backwards.

Unfortunately, even the short sporty windscreen blocks a lot of cooling air.

Yet it also creates a bit of turbulence around the top of my helmet.

I’m 183cm, so shorter riders might find it ok. You can also buy taller screens.

Conclusion

This torque monster delivers plenty of raw grunt, but with finesse.

It will also provide a step up in comfort and safety on long trips, thanks to its suite of hi-tech rider aids.
