Harley sack dealer and factory staff

A Tennessee Harley-Davidson, Honda and Polaris dealer has got the sack over a Facebook post that said he was “sick of this black lives matter” and called for black people to go “back to Africa and stay”.

The sacking comes as Harley has also sacked 90 staff at their York Vehicle Operations in Pennsylvania where in March they temporarily suspending production over the pandemic.

The double-whammy sacking controversy comes amid the growing Black Lives Matter movement.

Dealer gets sack

Russell Abernathy (pictured above), who owns Abernathy’s Cycles in Union City deleted his post after it caused a wave of criticism on social media.

However, Polaris demanded he transfer ownership, Honda condemned the racist post and Harley said it was not good enough.

Harley issued this statement:

Racism, hate or intolerance have no place in our world including within the Harley-Davidson community, employees, dealers or riders. We recently became aware of racist comments posted on one of our dealer owner’s Facebook page and immediately started a review process. We will not tolerate this type of behavior in our network, and today we are announcing that the dealer owner in question will no longer be part of our dealer network. Harley-Davidson is committed to diversity and inclusion. We strive to create a welcoming environment for everyone.

Abernathy claims his Facebook page which features a profile picture of him with a Harley in front of the Confederate flag was hacked.sack

Abernathy said on his website:

Regarding the social media post attributed to me 12/6/2020. I Russell Abernathy, did not post this comment and reject the content of it … I vow to make sure that Abernathy’s Harley-Davidson provides a positive environment for diversity, equality and inclusion for all.

The Black Lives Matter controversy follows the recent decision by Confederate Motorcycles to change its name to Combat Motors.

York workers sacked

Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson is sacking 90 workers at its York manufacturing plant, according to  spokesperson.

“As course of normal business, Harley-Davidson regularly adjusts its production plan and appropriately sizes its workforce,” they say.

“Today the company announced it will adjust its production volume, which will result in a workforce reduction of approximately 90 York employees.”

The plant reopened a month ago after temporarily suspending production due to the pandemic.

Last month new Harley boss Jocehn Zeitz said they would produce fewer bikes to increase exclusivity.

“We are using this time to course correct and rewire the company in pursuit of making Harley-Davidson one of the most desirable brands in the world,” he said.

Triumph launch Trekker GT e-bike

Triumph started in 1889 as a bicycle company and now they are returning to bicycles with an e-bike called the Trekker GT.

They are not the only motorcycle manufacturer looking to ebikes as a supplement to their motorcycle business.

Ducati and even Harley-Davidson are getting into the ebikes trend.

It all comes as some riders are calling for ebikes to be registered before they dominate bike lanes, chew up available parking space and lawless riders give all motorcycle and scooter riders a bad name.

The move to add ebikes also comes as Triumph Motorcycle recently announced it would slash 400 jobs globally, blaming the pandemic for falling sales.

Triumph also made bicycles in the 1970s, but this is a modern pedal-assisted electric model with some hi-tech features such as digital instruments.

2020 Harley-Davidson Road King review

When it comes to no-frills traditional touring the first bike that comes to mind is the Harley-Davidson Road King.

That is partly because of the name: Road King by name, road king by nature.

Apart from auxiliary riding lights, lockable panniers, cruise control, a windscreen and some crash protection, the rest is simple and traditional motorcycling.2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

At its core is a hefty 107 cubic-inch (1745cc) Milwaukee Eight engine that is refined brute strength for hauling your ass and your luggage.

And it will ably haul two in more comfort now that the bike gets the fatter and wider pillion seat from the Heritage Softail.

The rider will also enjoy the slightly narrower seat so your legs are as splayed as before.2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

What I love about this bike is that it does everything in an understated manner. Nothing showy, just honest touring motorcycling.

Despite its simplicity, it is actually quite flexible and really a two-in-one bike when you consider you can easily remove the windscreen and panniers in less than a minute.

Road King power2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

Since 2017, the Touring models have the Milwaukee Eight engine which is not only more powerful, but also smoother, quieter and runs cooler!

The Milwaukee Eight is so called because they have gone from the Twin Cam to a quieter single chain-driven camshaft with four lighter valves per head. There’s eight valves in all, hence “Milwaukee Eight”.

The ignition thump is gone as is a much of the mechanical noise.

Finer internal tolerances and lighter components have made it mechanically quieter which means Harley’s engineers have legally been able to ramp up the volume and bass in the exhaust.

While the transmission is much less “agricultural” in feel, neutral can still be a little difficult to find. It’s easier if you try to obtain that green “N” light just before coming to a stop.

I’m a little disappointed to see that the convenient heel shifter is no longer standard. It would be my first accessory purchase.2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

I have been riding the bike around for a couple of weeks in fairly cool and wet weather, so I haven’t been able to asses its engine heat.

However, the ignition has been advanced to make it cooler, lowered the rear header down and moved the catalytic converter rearwards.

The last time I rode one a couple of years ago I found thermal comfort had improved, but there was still plenty of heat around the back of the leg. The pillion also complained about heat being directed at her right ankle.

However, you can remove the windscreen for better summer ventilation.

Ride and handling2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

The Road King is the best handling of the touring models with a light front end, the most clearance and a precise feel.

The taut chassis and good clearance allow it to be thrown around much more than you would expect of a 362+kg monster.

This is largely due to the Showa dual bending valve forks.

They have also removed some of the jackhammer effect in the grips, although the long mini-ape bars relay vibration and impact shudders to your hands.2020 Harley-Davidson Road King

I found gloves with palm padding mitigates the effects.

The new emulsion-technology rear shock absorbers improves the ride, but it’s still a little short over some of Queensland’s bumpy B roads.

The twin springs can be easily adjusted with a single knob, but you have to remove a pannier first.

They also offer 15 to 30% more pre-load adjustment for heavier loads.

Creature comfortsBorder Harley-Davidson Road King

Apart from better seats, the mini-apes are a good fit for me and the floorboards are generous for long-legged riders.

Instruments are simple and understated: a single round speedo with a small LCD screen showing a variety of information you can toggle through with the switch on the left bar.

There is also an analogue fuel gauge in the left “dummy” fuel cap.

The Road King has a minimum of chrome, but lush paintwork and don’t you love that mint-green colour scheme. Once again, understated and stately.

Indian Motorcycle plans electric EFTR

Indian Motorcycle has filed a trademark application for the name EFTR which suggests it is an Electric Flat Track Racer, with the bike possibly unveiled as early as next year.

The model name EFTR indicates it is likely to be styled on their current popular FTR 1200 model.

This would not be the first electric motorcycle from Polaris which is the owning parent company of Indian Motorcycle.

In 2015, Polaris bought Brammo electric bikes and rebadged them as the Victory Empulse TT which I rode in Colorado that year.

Victory Empulse TT electric motorcycle benefits smaller automatics altaMBW rides the Victory Empulse TT electric bike at its launch in Colorado in 2015

When Polaris pulled the pin on Victory Motorcycles in January 2017 to concentrate on Indian, they dropped the Empulse TT.

However, then vice-present of motorcycles Steve Menneto confirmed at the time that they would produce an electric Indian within five years.

That timeline means the EFTR could arrive in 2021.

EFTR range and price

We doubt the EFTR will be a resurrected Empulse TT, but it could have some of the same technology. (Out of interest we have included the 2015 tech specs for the Empulse TT at the end of this article.)

When he made the electric Indian announcement, Steve said their electric bikes would have up to 225km of range which is much higher range than the Empulse TT at about 140km.

Interestingly, the Empulse TT had manual transmission in an effort to make motorcycle riders feel more at home than with a twist-and-go throttle like most electric motorcycles.

we expect much the same with the EFTR.

Obviously it is too early to speculate on price, but the Victory Empulse sold in the US from $US19,999 (about $A28,500).

That is much less than the Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire which sells for almost $US30,000 overseas and could cost more than $A40,000 when it arrives in Australia late this year.

Best Spark Plugs for a Harley-Davidson

A spark plug is a device that delivers electric current from the ignition to the combustion chamber of an engine to ignite the compressed mixture of air and fuel.

All motorcycles, including those from the Harley-Davidson company, require a suitable spark plug for optimum starting as well as engine performance.

Below are the best spark plugs for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Best Spark Plugs for a Harley-Davidson

1. NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug

Spark plug

These are twin cam spark plugs, and when used, they give a gain of up to 3 HP. The NGK Iridium IX spark plug has an electrode of 25% smaller than that of platinum. It is a quarter size when compared to a conventional nickel electrode. It has an ultra-small diameter of the electrode at the center, which reduces the requirement of the voltage and extends the life of the ignition system.

With the new metal shell plating, there has been an enhancement of anticorrosion qualities. Still, these products come pre-gapped. This plug is recommended as one of the best spark plugs for Harley Davidson motorbikes.

2. E3 Spark Plugs

Power sports Spark plug

These types of plugs are efficient and have smooth acceleration. The E3 Spark Plug is a branded ground electrode module that provides more efficient burning fuel of your motorbike or vehicle, thereby having more pressure inside the cylinder.

The Diamond electrode extends this spark into the combustion chamber, which brings it closer to the robust fuel/air mixture.

The initial ignition wave leaves the spark zone at supersonic speed, and the lifted edge provides a chimney impact to allow the same procedure to occur more quickly in the next round. Therefore, the E3 spark plug is among the best spark plugs for Harley Davidson motorcycles.

3. Screamin’ Eagle Performance Spark Plug

Screamin Eagle spark plug

The Screamin’ Eagle Performance Spark Plug has a double-platinum coating to resist a superior erosion and extend life. It has a ‘V’ trimmed ground electrode that reduces the chances of covering the from the side of the flame. This promotes flame propagation.

The fine wire at the center of the electrode facilitates the startups as well as the ability to ignite. It is designed with some original equipment that suppresses noise and inhibits electrical interference with other devices such as radios.

Also, it is featured with Ribbed Core Technology, which is resistant to fouling. It works excellently in application races, which require rich fuel/air.

This design of the spark plug is a unique style and is sold in pairs. It is appropriate for the modified engines inclusive of the high flow air cleaner, performance carburetors, exhaust systems, camshafts as well as the ignition systems together with the compression ratios of the stock.

4. Harley Davidson Original Equipment Spark Plug

HD spark plug

Harley Davidson original equipment spark plugs are sold each separately. They are entitled to a one-year limited warranty. However, it is out of stock at the time of writing. The original equipment Harley Davidson spark plug is very popular, and they have a more extended life service.

5. Gold Spark Plug

Gold spark plug

The Gold Spark Plug is associated with having a unique thread and a shell coating that ensures that there is an easy and quick means of removing aluminum heads, and it also resists corrosion. It has gold-palladium, which extends life and strengthens it to resist corrosion.

The tapered tip gives a good spark exposure to the fuel/air mixture and also permits a smooth flow through the gap zone for a maximum ignition. The small diameter at the center of the electrode wire plus the insulator tip improves the fouling resistance.

The ground electrode with copper core runs cooler to make it last longer. It also has threads that do not seize to coat.

How often should you change spark plugs on a Harley Davidson?

Spark plugs are some of the things that you rarely think about when riding your motorbike. They do not appear in your standard checklist, such as turn signals and tires, among others. However, you should not ignore spark plugs completely because they need replacement at some points for the motorcycle to continue giving you the services you require appropriately.

Proper installation and maintenance of spark plugs is key for enjoying the top performance of the bike. The big question is, how often should you replace the spark plug of your motor vehicle?

In modern motorcycles, spark plugs should be replaced after every 15,000 to 16,000 miles of riding your motorbike. However, if your bike is sputtering, running rough, or even losing power, just think about inspecting and replacing the spark plug.

If you are buying a second-hand motorcycle, you should ask the seller the last time they changed the spark plug. If the previous owner does not remember or isn’t sure, consider replacing them immediately to ensure your safety.

It is worth noting that when replacing the spark plug, you need to check its compatibility. Make sure that your spark plug is well compatible with the model and the make of your motorbike and also the type of the engine. Also, you should consider its compatibility with your fuel.

Another consideration is the functionality of the spark plug and its improvement in engine performance with regard to power efficiency, ignition time and fuel economy.

Do iridium spark plugs increase performance?

Yes, iridium spark plugs increase performance in that they produce enough sparks to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the ignition system. Using a correctly gapped spark plug and a new one inhibits early combustion or even skipped firing, which may end up damaging the engine.

Iridium is not among the great conductors of electricity, but that does not limit it in performing as a spark plug. In fact, iridium outdoes the copper version and has a service life of around 60,000 miles.

Which is a better spark plug material, iridium or platinum?

There are several things to consider when it comes to determining which is a better spark plug, iridium or platinum. Some of these factors are durability, efficiency, and reliability, among others.

For instance, platinum may be harder than copper, but iridium is the hardest of them all. Therefore, an iridium spark plug can outdo a platinum spark plug.

Again, in terms of performance, iridium performs better than platinum. Still, iridium has a longer lifespan and is more durable than platinum.

The only downside of iridium is that it is expensive and difficult to find in the market, but once you find it, be sure of working with it for a long time without the demand for any replacement. Therefore, iridium is much better than platinum.

What is the benefit of iridium spark plugs?

Iridium spark plugs have the following benefits:

1. Improve Acceleration

Do you have a problem with accelerating your motorcycle? If so, then switch to iridium spark plugs because this will improve your acceleration. There is a fast response to strangulate operation, and you will automatically feel that difference compared to other plugs.

2. More Engine Power

Every driver wants to be able to climb hills comfortably. With an iridium spark plug, climbing any hill is not a problem. It helps in improving engine performance in regard to power. That extra power is apparent in different situations such as climbing hilly places, and this contributes to giving you a comfortable touring and as well as driving experience.

3. Improve Starting and Combustion Characteristics

Iridium spark plugs have an ultra-fine center electrode that ensures fast combustion and also improves the starting characteristics of the engine. There is little dispersion and more so at the position of the spark, which makes the motorcycle stable even at low speeds.

4. Fuel Economy

Would you like to cut your fuel expenses? Iridium spark plugs have a better fuel economy. These plugs ensure there is a proper ignition, and this gives gasoline time to be burnt efficiently. These plugs do not only give you an economic benefit only, but they also provide environmental benefits.

How to Choose Motorcycle Gloves

If you are an experienced motorcycle rider, you will need to invest in a pair of motorcycle gloves for added comfort and protection. Motorcycle gloves can provide abrasion resistance, knuckle protection and act as one of the best forms of protective riding gear.

There are many factors to consider when choosing your next pair of motorcycle gloves. Some of these factors are a personal preference so you must fully look into each brand and style of the bike glove before choosing one.

Here are some of the main factors that you need to consider before purchasing your next pair of riding gloves.

1. Riding Style

One of the main factors to consider when looking for the perfect pair of gloves is what is the riding style of glove you want to have. For instance, if you want a cruiser glove you will likely be looking into a traditional style of glove, while if you are looking into a sport glove you will likely want a pair of gloves that have lots of color and even metal imprints.

2. Weather

Another thing that you need to consider when purchasing your next pair of gloves is what type of weather you typically ride in. Many motorcycle riders will only ride their bikes in nice weather to help prevent the risk of falls and accidents. Other riders may not have an option when they ride.

If you ride during wet and rainy conditions you will definitely want to consider getting a waterproof glove. If you ride during other, dry conditions you will likely want to get leather gloves for the added protection that they offer. For cold weather, choose some padded winter motorcycle gloves.

3. Size

To ensure that you are comfortable and confident when you ride, it is essential that your gloves fit properly. If you are going to buy a pair of gloves, they need to fit you properly in all areas.

Many gloves have an adjustable strap that allows for added security. You need to ensure that the gloves fit your fingers, hand and wrist. A snug fit will help ensure that you get a better grip on your bike.

4. Length of Glove

Another main factor to consider is the length of the glove you want. If you want to have a short glove that only goes to your wrist you should find a pair of gloves that offer this design style.

If you want to have added protection around your wrists in case of a fall or want to keep your hands and wrists warmer during a ride you may want to invest in long gloves. Both types of gloves are great, however, it is a personal preference of which type you choose.

5. Touchscreen Capability

If you like to use your phone while you ride, or while you take a short break, you may want to invest in a pair of gloves that have touchscreen capability. Once your gloves are on you will likely not want to take them off. It is difficult to get the perfect adjusted fit and then have to take the gloves off because you have an important call coming in.

If you use your phone while you ride you may want a pair of gloves that have touchscreen capabilities. This allows you to answer your phone while you ride.

6. Price

One last factor that every rider needs to consider before buying a pair of gloves is the price point that they want to stay within. All gloves are made and designed differently, however, there are great gloves at all price ranges. You need to find a glove that fits within your price range so that you feel comfortable spending the money to keep yourself safe and comfortable while riding.

You should decide which factors are the most important to you in a glove and find a glove within your price range that has all of the features that you care most about. This can help you find a glove you love for less than you expected.

Harley-Davidson plans balancing bike

Harley-Davidson has filed a patent for a self-balancing system that might help attract more customers to their big and heavy touring motorcycles.

Their bikes already have a large flywheel and low centre of gravity that makes them stable at slow speeds, but their mass is daunting for many riders. That’s why they are often dropped while stationary. How to pick up a heavy motorcycle Kaitlin Riley

That issue could be resolved by this system that uses a gyroscope for balance when stopped and at walking speeds.

The patent drawings show the gyro unit is stored in the top box and includes another heavy flywheel and an electric motor which would make the bike even heavier.

The weight is also stored up high, so it effectively makes it even more difficult to hold upright at slow speeds and when stopped … except for the effect of the gyroscope!

It is a traditional gyro system with a flywheel that spins at up to 20,000rpm thanks to the electric motor. The system also has sensors that detect whether it is about to tip over so it engages the spinning flywheel.

While the system would take up luggage space, because it is self-contained, it could be retrofitted.

This could be a major attraction for ageing riders as well as reaching out to other riders who never though they could handle a heavy touring motorcycle.

Harley is not the only company working on self-balancing systems to attract more riders daunted by motorcycles.

Both BMW Motorrad and Honda have self-balancing prototypes and Yamaha is also working on one.

Harley-Davidson plans big loan

Harley-Davidson has announced it now has access to a loan of up to $US350 million (about $A500 million) over the next year.

While it has not committed to the entire amount of the loan, it is committed to draw at least $US150m (about $A215m).

The company believes the loan is consistent with its intentions regarding liquidity.

Loan plan

What the loan would be used for we are not sure and there has been no announcement about their purpose, but it could be to help mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

It follows recent measures announced by new CEO and president Jochen Zeitz to ride out the pandemic recession including:

The new measures are in addition to Jochen’s Rewire strategy.

Harley in the news

Harley has been in the news the past couple of months ever since CEO Matt Levatich was sacked in February Jochen was appointed interim CEO and then announced as CEO on 8 May 2020.

In May, it was revealed that Jochen senior VP and CFO John A. Olin bought millions in shares of HOG stock.

This seems to show a vote of confidence in the company by its executives, although some say it may be just for show to prop up the share price.

There is still no statement from Harley about the share purchases and no record of Jochen’s salary.

However, the previous boss was paid a record $11m last year.

Jochen’s five-year “Rewire”strategy also involves expanding “profitable iconic heritage bikes” while committing to branching out to adventure touring, the new Streetfighter range and electric motorcycles.

Harley’s sales have been on the slide for several years. This video gives an entertaining history of the American icon’s problems.

Replica of first Harley-Davidson in historic sale

A replica of the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle ever made is being offered in a sale of historic motorcycles through Heroes Motors in Los Angeles.

The genuine first Harley sits in a glass case in the Harley museum in Milwaukee and would cost millions.Historic Harley

This replica of the 1905 model is a comparatively cheap $US120,000 (about $A180,000).

It was made in the mid-1990s by a group of artisans who ensured it was technically correct.

They included such details as the early engine’s case studs, and the thread and pitch of various fittings.

The engine has never been started but was planned to be fully operable.Historic Harley

Cosmoline has been applied to the internals to protect the finishes from the expected long-term storage in a collection or museum.

The bike is one of several historic models being offered by the prestige LA motor showroom.

Historic trike

Another is a 120-year-old De Dion-Bouton tricycle built by Jules-Albert de Dion who won the world’s first motor race, in 1894, run over a distance of 122km from Paris to Rouen. He was actually the only entrant!

This original 1900 De Dion-Bouton tricycle showing VIN 157 and engine No. 15568 comes from Sweden, where it is the oldest street-legal registered bike.

It features a 2.75hp motor, correct and original mechanical details and will set you back a whopping $US145,000 (about $A218,000).

1904 IndianHistoric Indian

Heroes Motors also have a 1904 Indian Hedstrom Camelback for sale at $US90,000 (about $A135,500).

It is essentially the same bike that Oscar Hedstrom built to show George Hendee as the first prototype for the fledgling Hendee Manufacturing Company in 1901.

This clean, black example of the early Indian models features the famed “Hedstrom Improved Carburetor” on the 260cc single-cylinder motor that serves as a stressed member of the cycle’s frame.

The direct-drive chain Indian used from the start was more reliable than the tensioned leather belts of other cycles.

New and deleted Harley-Davidson 2021 models

Speculation is rife that several Harley-Davidson models will be deleted for 2021 in the wake of the delay in launching two new models and plans to reduce output to create more ”exclusivity”.

American website Total Motorcycle has published what it claims is the manufacturer’s list of 2021 models with the FXDR 114, Breakout 114 and Softail Deluxe deleted. They also say there are rumours all CVOs will be deleted for 2021.

But the list does add the recently delayed Pan America 1250 adventure bike and the Bronx Streetfighter 975, plus a Softail Custom and a Sportster Streetfighter.

The latter two additions will probably just be parts-bin specials.

Model strategy

We can’t vouch for the veracity of the 2021 model list, but there are a few things that strike us as strange or contradictory.

The Motor Company is expected to go through a major overhaul with new boss Jochen Zeitz laying down his five-year “Rewire” strategy. It follows the former boss’s “More Roads” strategy for 100 new models in 10 years.

However, Jochen’s plan does not necessarily mean fewer new models.

In fact, he committed to branching out to adventure touring, the new Streetfighter range and electric motorcycles. The Total Motorcycles list includes the LiveWire and electric bicycles and a scooter.

Jochen also says his “Rewire” strategy will expand “profitable iconic heritage bikes” and “continue to expand beyond traditional products and markets”.

It doesn’t sound like a wholesale axing of models.

And surely the Softail Deluxe qualifies as an “iconic heritage bike” while the Breakout 114 would qualify as profitable, especially in Australia where the 114 and 107 versions have been among their biggest sellers for several years.

FXDR deleted?

Limited edition FXDRLimited edition FXDR

However, we can totally understand if the FXDR Softail is deleted.

It looks more like a vacuum cleaner than a motorcycle and has subsequently not sold well.

Another pointer to the FXDR facing the axe is the fact that a limited run of 30 FXDR 114 models (pictured above) with special, cosmetic modifications is being launched for sale in the UK and Ireland only. Sounds like a tactic to get rid of excess stock.

Harley is not shy about axing models that don’t sell well. We’ve seen a host of models come and go over the years.

CVO models

Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide Limited Road Glide Boom Box rain wet infotainment audio technoCVO models change almost every year

As for CVO models being deleted, that does seem strange, especially since the Total Motorcycles 2021 model list shows the CVO Road Glide, CVO Street Glide, CVO Limited and CVO Tri Glide!

Harley usually only releases three or four CVOs each year and the models vary every year or so.

They don’t sell many, but the profit margin per bike is high.

So axing any CVOs doesn’t fit with Jochen’s plan to expand “profitable iconic heritage bikes”.

Production restart

Harley-Davidson 115th anniversary 110th 105thHarley’s Pilgrim Road factory where a worker tested positive for coronavirus

This week, Harley resumes manufacturing in the US after two months of pandemic lockdown.

The Motor Company says it will be a phased approach to resuming production, “following the guidelines of public health and regulatory authorities and keeping employee health and safety front and centre.”

Consequently output will be reduced not just for “exclusivity” but also for practical health and logistic reasons.

So we expect preference will be given to the more profitable and popular models leading to a shortfall in some models.

A memo to US dealers says they can expect only about 70% of ordered models.

However, Harley-Davidson Australia spokesman Keith Waddell says they “will have supply coming throughout the remainder of 2020”.
