Alpinestars Faster 3 Shoes | Gear Review

Alpinestars Faster 3
Alpinestars Faster 3 motorcycle shoes (photo by the author)

They are called shoes in the Alpinestars sales and marketing literature, but the Faster 3 shoes are truly a hybrid crossover between shoes and boots. The Faster series of footwear has been in the Alpinestars line for some time, and this third iteration is a substantial upgrade from earlier offerings.

Gear selection is an exercise in personal preference and compromise. The Faster 3 shoes are an object lesson in this concept. I have both high-top and fully armored riding sneakers and several types of high-rise boots in my gear closet. The sneakers are extremely comfortable both on and off the bike but are very light on protection. The boots are supremely protective, but are rigid, awkward, and semi-uncomfortable for extended walking. The Alpinestars Faster 3 shoes can be boot-horned directly between these two extremes.

The Faster 3 shoes are an armored, over the ankle, lace-up model with a substantial cutout in the Achilles area for enhanced mobility. I am sure you can already see the advantages.

Read more of Rider‘s apparel reviews

Let’s start with the safety features. The Faster 3 shoes now carry the important CE certification in each of their variations: the Rideknit, Drystar, and the standard version (as tested). There is a subtle, low-profile TPR toe slider and an extremely protective and supportive TPR heel cup out back. Dual density ankle protectors are inserted between the microfiber upper and padded lining on both sides of the shoe.

On the comfort end of the spectrum, the aforementioned cutout in the rear of the boot gives a level of front to back mobility that full-rise boots can’t match. The sole is semi-rigid with an integrated support shank, providing a solid riding platform while also affording comfortable walk-ability. The boots feel supportive and comfortable both on and off the bike. I identified no pressure points or comfort quibbles on day-long rides. Ventilation is more than adequate.

The lace-up design is another advantage of this shoe. I really like the ability to fine-tune the fit with laces; however, loose laces on a motorcycle boot can cause problems if the laces are allowed to whip around. Alpinestars has provided a solution by including an easy-to-actuate Velcro strap to secure the boot laces for riding. The design works well and is easily adjusted with gloved hands.

The Faster 3 shoes really shine on the bike. That semi-rigid sole gives good riding feedback while spreading the pressure from the foot pegs over the full arch. The ankle mobility makes shifting and braking seamless and nimble. The low-profile toe box facilitates movement between upshifting and downshifting.

I am calling the Alpinestars Faster 3 shoes a winner for urban riding and light touring. While not as protective as full boots, the compromises are well-balanced and carefully engineered. The $169.95 retail price point places Faster 3s in the ballpark with other premium riding shoes.

The Alpinestars Faster 3 shoe is available for $169.95 in six color options and sizes 6-14.

Insta360 X3 Action Camera First Look Preview

The new Insta360 X3 has a huge range of shooting and editing options.

The new Insta360 X3 camera packs a lot of features into a pocket-sized package, with some updates that are sure to be of interest to social media creators. The camera goes on sale today at insta360.com and Amazon, and will start at $449.99.

“With the X series, we are reinventing the point-and-shoot camera to make it easier for anyone to be a creator,” Insta360 founder JK Liu said in a company press release. “X3 is built to help the next generation of creators take their creativity to new heights.”

The X3 comes with a brand-new 1/2-inch sensor and a 2.29-inch touchscreen. It’s capable of capturing 5.7K 360 video or 72MP images, but the options for capturing videos and images go well beyond those specs.

Users will be able to shoot 360-degree videos, but then later reframe portions of the video to fit the intended platforms. Insta360 claims that using its app will, for instance, allow people to turn a 4:5 Instagram video into a 9:16 TikTok video without any quality loss.

The new sensor makes Active HDR mode possible, which improves stabilization and detail richness. A dual-lens design makes it possible to incorporate an Invisible Selfie Stick feature, which automatically deletes the stick from the footage. MeMode incorporates the ISS function and allows users to shoot selfie videos at 60fps without any need to reframe.

Single-Lens mode is upgraded to 4K resolution and MaxView mode provides 170 degrees of view in 2.7K. The camera can capture 8K 360 time-lapse video and it also features a Bullet Time slow-mo feature that captures video in 4K 120fps or 3K 180fps.

A six-axis gyroscope makes FlowState stabilization possible, allowing the X3 to keep the horizon level even when the camera is completely rotated. It’s waterproof up to 33 feet (10 meters) out of the box and capable of even more depths with the addition of accessory lens guards.

Loop Recording gives users the option to use the X3 as a dashcam, offering continuous recording that only saves the final minutes according to user-set intervals.

There are only four buttons on the camera to help make operation simple. Direction Focus Audio automatically tunes in to the action on camera, even if it’s reframed. The X3 also comes with a new 1,800 mAh battery.

Used in conjunction with the Insta360 app, users will benefit from AI-powered features. Shot Lab comes equipped with more than 30 visual effects. Snap Wizard lets users reframe the video by simply moving their smartphone. Photo animations can be added using the Photo Animator tool; Deep Track 2.0 makes syncing up music to a video a breeze as well. If you want to get even more sophisticated during editing, Insta360 Studio will be available for desktop, offering more options to fine-tune footage.

Fly Racing Terra Trek Jacket and Pants | Gear Review

Fly Racing Terra Trek Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250

In a market where new top-tier ADV apparel can cost as much as your monthly rent or mortgage payment, the Fly Racing Terra Trek jacket and pants combo is the budget-conscious rider’s best friend. Ready for four seasons of riding, the Terra Trek’s Hydraguard breathable weatherproofing eliminates the need for bulky rain liners and provides added protection as a windbreaker. When the temperature drops, a removable thermal liner can be snapped into each garment to hold in body heat. On hot days, opening the waterproof zippers for the chest and leg vents brings in fresh air (a few more vents would help).

Fly Racing provides the standard treatment of CE Level 1 armor in the shoulders and elbows of the jacket. A foam back protector is provided, but we recommend upgrading to Fly’s Barricade CE Level 2 back protector ($39.95). Terra Trek pants have CE Level 1 armor in the knees, and there are pockets for optional CE Level 1 hip armor ($23.95).

Since it’s geared toward adventure riding, the Terra Trek duo has a casual cut — not too loose, not too tight, and all-day comfortable, thanks in part to the sweat-wicking mesh liner. There are several ways to fine-tune the fit of the jacket, snugging up the biceps with snaps and straps and tightening the waist adjuster. The pants feature adjustments at the waist and the calf area to accommodate bulky ADV/MX boots, and a sturdy 8-inch zipper connects the jacket to the pants. Storage is aplenty with three external pockets and several internal compartments on the jacket and two cargo pockets and zippered hip pockets on the pants.

Priced at $259.95 for the jacket and $239.95 for the pants, $499.90 gets you the whole enchilada.

The Terra Trek jacket is available in Black, Sand/Black, and High-Viz/Black, in sizes S-4XL. The pants are available in men’s sizes 30-40 in Black and Sand/Black. Tall sizes are available for both.

New Gear: HeliBars Tour Commander for BMW R 18 B/Transcontinental

HeliBars Tour Commander

The 2022 BMW R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental are great bikes once they get rolling, but they can be ponderous to maneuver at lower speeds – especially sharp turns – due to the stock handlebar’s 45-degree rearward sweep. Enter the Tour Commander bar from HeliBars.

Related Story: 2022 BMW R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental | Video Review

The new Tour Commander bar is specifically for the R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental and is 1 inch wider than stock, with a more relaxed wrist angle (a 22-degree angle versus the stock 45 degree angle), providing more comfort and better steering leverage and control.

HeliBars Tour Commander
The relaxed 22-degree wrist angle and increased width of the Tour Commander from HeliBars can be seen in comparison with the stock bar above it.

The bar can be rotated forward almost 6 inches above stock bar height for taller riders or mounted 3 inches closer for shorter riders. The bar is currently available in black powdercoat starting at $479.

Dunlop American Elite Tires | Gear Review

Dunlop American Elite Tires

Touring tires for heavyweight bikes need to be made of tough stuff. They are expected to last a long time and perform well in hot, cold, wet, and dry conditions on all kinds of roads. Dunlop American Elite tires meet all these requirements and more. I’ve put more than 1,500 miles on them aboard my 2017 Road Glide Ultra since getting them spooned on by the good folks at Ventura Harley-Davidson, and I am very impressed. In fact, in over 48 years of riding motorcycles (don’t judge), these are the best road tires I’ve ever tried.

Dunlop American Elite Tires

The American Elites provide excellent ride quality, the first line of defense against potholes, seams, and cracks in the neglected poured-concrete freeways and sunbaked highways where I live in California. For those of you who live in parts of the country with smoother roads, you’ll enjoy an even more comfortable, confidence-inspiring ride.

Related Story: Dunlop Mutant Tires tested on a Harley-Davidson Pan America

Stable and smooth on the highway, when the pavement starts to curve, the Dunlops exhibit neutral turn-in behavior and hold a steady line. When midcorner corrections are required, they respond with stability and excellent feedback. I rode in temperatures ranging from 55 to 113 degrees on roads with tar snakes, grooved pavement, and other irregularities, and the tires’ performance remained consistent and predictable. They were particularly quiet, with little change in road noise over varying surfaces.

Dunlop American Elite Tires

From an aesthetic side, the American Elites are handsome-looking tires that have deep, rain-evacuating grooves. The front tire is made of a single compound while the rear uses Dunlop’s Multi Tread technology to provide durability in the center and reassuring grip on the shoulders. Dunlop claims the Elites offer more longevity, better stability, more wet grip, and greater bump compliance than Michelin Commander IIs. Based on my experience with both types of tires on my Ultra, I would agree.

These are premium tires that will enhance the enjoyment and safety of riding your American-made motorcycle. I give them an enthusiastic two thumbs up!

Dunlop American Elite tires are designed, tested, and manufactured in the United States. They are available in blackwall, narrow whitewall, and wide whitewall styles in a range of sizes for Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Victory models. Pricing ranges from $185.95 to $381.95 depending on size.

Schuberth C5 Modular Helmet and SC2 Communicator | Gear Review

Schuberth C5 Modular Helmet and SC2 Communicator

The Schuberth C5 modular helmet is a clean-sheet design that shares no parts with the company’s C4/Pro. Informed by a spatial study, the new architecture has an intermediate-oval head shape that’s less round than the C4/Pro with more interior space. The chinstrap was moved forward, and the new chinbar locking mechanism doesn’t use pins, which avoids the helmet getting tighter when the chinbar is closed.

Having worn several generations of Schuberth’s modular helmets, the changes were immediately noticeable. Sliding the helmet on and off my head is easier, and comfort while riding is greatly improved. Airflow through the helmet has been increased with larger vents and better interior channeling.

Schuberth C5 Modular Helmet and SC2 Communicator

Read more of Rider‘s helmet reviews here

The C5 was designed to meet Europe’s new ECE 22.06 helmet safety standard, which sets higher benchmarks for impact protection and requires a larger eyeport for better visibility. The C5 meets the P/J homologation standard. “P” stands for “protective” and refers to full-face helmets; “J” stands for “jet” and refers to open-face helmets. P/J-homologated helmets can be used in both the open and closed positions, and the C5 has a tab to lock the chinbar in the open position.

The shell is made using Schuberth’s proprietary Direct Fiber Processing. Glass fibers are blown into a mold with a precise amount of resin and compressed in a high-pressure vacuum, creating an exceptionally strong shell. The C5 is not dual homologated to meet ECE and DOT standards. A DOT-specific version of the C5 has a shell reinforced with a basalt layer for added strength.

Inside the shell is a dual-density EPS liner and a new comfort liner with customizable pads. There are optional “sport” and “comfort” cheek pads and replaceable rear pads that can make the interior more round or more oval. The faceshield includes a Pinlock anti-fog insert, and a new patented memory function keeps the faceshield open at a desired level after opening and closing the chinbar.

The C5 is prewired for the optional SC2 Bluetooth 5.0 communicator ($349), which is made by Sena and based on the 50S with voice activation and mesh networking. HD speakers and an antenna are built into the helmet. A remote-control unit clicks into the left side of the helmet, and the SC2 main unit with rechargeable battery plugs into the back of the helmet.

Our C5 in size medium with the SC2 installed weighs 4 lb, 2 ounces. Fit, finish, comfort, ventilation, and functionality are excellent. It’s available in sizes XS-3XL in solid colors for $749 and graphics for $849.
