Could Royal Enfield Become a Juggernaut Like Harley Was?

Appealing to “The Youths”

Royal Enfield’s rise is one that’s fairly well documented. Siddhartha Lal brought back the company in a big way and part of the way it was done was to bring younger riders into the fold with cool and affordable motorcycles. Now that the Indian market is going well for Royal Enfield, the company is focusing on global expansion.

The focus for Royal Enfield will be on Western countries, like the U.S., Europe, Australia, and others. Lal told Bloomberg that he wants to be a big brand outside of India and the other markets Royal Enfield is currently thriving in.

“I could be great in India and Brazil and Thailand and Africa,” he says. “But if I’m not in Europe and America, then I’m not a global brand.

Lal went through school and rode a Royal Enfield while studying. His father owned Eicher Motors, which owns Royal Enfield. At one point, when he was in his late 20s, Royal Enfield was on the brink of being shut down, and he convinced his father to let him run it. It turned out the be the right choice.

“All of this was entirely and only because I was the promoter’s son,” he said to Bloomberg’s Ari Altsteader, using an Indian term to refer to an owner-operator. “A random bloke at 27 wouldn’t have got this job.”

Some of Lal’s first moves were his best. He focused on dealer relationships, pricing of motorcycles, and manufacturing. This helped with the reliability and the perception of the bikes. These moves, plus adding more models and focusing on smart marketing tactics among other things, have helped Royal Enfield become a powerhouse again.

Royal Enfield Classic 500 Tribute Black

According to Bloomberg, the company sold 824,000 bikes globally the year before the pandemic hit. Harley sold 218,000.

Now the focus is on Western countries. Lal told Bloomberg that the company’s success in Western countries could help make his motorcycles an aspirational product in India and some other markets. The company has already started its onslaught, with a focus on flat track racing and trying to set speed records with Cayla Rivas (a motorcycle racer). More initiatives like this will come in the future I’m sure.

The company is focusing on building enthusiasm around the brand and trying to get a cult following similar to what it has crafted in India and what Harley-Davidson has built in the U.S. It will be a long haul, but at the moment, it looks like Royal Enfield’s making the right moves.

There’s still a lot to do, but the reception of Royal Enfield’s latest models has been good, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds. Royal Enfield has a long way to go to beat out Harley in terms of brand recognition (especially in the U.S.), but it’s making moves in the right direction.

Royal Enfield Official Begins Production in Argentina

How Royal Enfield Will Win

Royal Enfield officially began production in its new facility in Argentina. Not long ago I reported that production would begin there, and now it’s officially underway, according to RideApart.

The company has partnered with Grupo Simpa, which it previously used as a distributor to make this new production facility happen. Grupo Simpa will assemble three of Royal Enfield’s models at the new plant.

The new plant will be responsible for the Himalayan, Continental GT, and Interceptor 650. This is a smart move because the bikes have been selling well in Argentina already. It also gives Royal Enfield a good place to export bikes from.

Royal Enfield production in Argentina

“Argentina and other South American countries have been an important market for Royal Enfield,” said Royal Enfield CEO Vinod K. Dasari.

Dasari said that the local terrain and topography create the perfect place for the company’s bikes, which is why they have been such a hit there.

Harley Davidson Livewire

“Our decision to start assembling our motorcycles in Argentina is proof of our long-term commitment and confidence in the market,” he said.

The focus, at least at first, will be on South American markets for the motorcycles made here. I would expect as things progress this plant will become an important strategic part of Royal Enfield’s plant to take its 650cc models to every market on the globe.

Royal Enfield Production to Start This Month at New Plant in Argentina

Royal Enfield has a new production plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That facility will begin production this month, according to Hindustan Times.

The company has also collaborated with the local distributor Grupo Simpa. Together these moves should help the company continue to expand globally.

Royal Enfield has been seeing some slower sales in its home market of India, but the Himalayan, Continental GT, and INT 650 are all selling really well. This move to manufacturing these bikes here is a step towards leaning into the momentum of the Himalayan and 650 twins.

“With a strategic view to cater to growing demand and to gain significant market advantage, we have been pursuing our plans to set up local assembly units across specific markets in the Asia Pacific region and across South America,” said Vinod Dasari, CEO of Royal Enfield. “In the first of these, we are very happy to announce the first CKD assembly plant in Argentina.”

This isn’t the first time that Royal Enfield has done something like this. RideApart notes that in 2019, the company started production facilities in Thailand.

Zenith Bi-Car

This is a smart move by Royal Enfield, and it should help the company economically produce motorcycles around the world. We will likely see continued expansion of Royal Enfield operations around the world as long as its bikes stay popular.

It seems Royal Enfield will utilize the 650 platform it currently has to continue to build out its lineup. It’s been reported a few times that the company is working on other versions that utilize this platform. This will mean that these new production facilities will need to build more than just the Himalayan, Continental GT, and INT 650. It will be interesting to see how this progresses in the future.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Switches Off ABS

One of the few changes for the 2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan adventure motorcycle is the ability to switch off the ABS.

It may not seem like a big deal, but it is to the adventure rider who wants to be able to lock the wheels under braking to dig into the gravel, dirt, loam or sand surface for extra braking effect.

It’s a shame there isn’t the facility to just switch off the rear.

However, they say they have tweaked the rear brake for better feel and effect.

The other changes are the addition of three new colours — Lake Blue, Rock Red, and Gravel Grey – making a total of six colour choices. The existing colours are Granite Black, Snow White and Sleet Grey.

The Himalayan also now comes with a redesigned side stand and the engine is Euro5 compliant although they don’t say whether this has affected output.

There is no word on when these will arrive in Australia, price or whether all colours will be available.

Meanwhile, Royal Enfield has joined with iconic American jeans manufacturer Levi’s to launch a range of lifestyle and riding gear, available online and in Royal Enfield and Levi’s stores in India.

Royal Enfield builds electric prototypes

Old-school motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield is getting closer to releasing an electric model after building a couple of electric prototypes.

Last year, company president Rudratej Singh said they had “several projects in the pipeline and the electric platform is one of them”.

“We are in an investment phase in the project where we have a team that is working on different ideas and concepts with a long-term focus. We will disclose our plans at an appropriate time.”

Electric prototypes

Now CEO Vinod Dasari has confirmed that they have developed a couple of electric prototypes.

As suspected, Royal Enfield worked on its electric platform at their new English research and development centre in Leicestershire.

There are no further details on the project, but a prototype means they have something that works and is being tested.

It could have been shown at the world’s biggest motorcycle show in Milan in November, EICMA, but it has now been postponed a year.

So we are not sure when it will be unveiled.

However, we suspect it won’t look too different from the current old-school range.

Electric Royal Enfield Charging Bullet documentary trailer
Fred on his electric Bullet

Perhaps it will look like this electric-powered Royal Enfield Bullet built by British engineer Fred Spaven to travel the length of Britain for a documentary film called Charging Bullet promoting sustainable transport.

Royal Enfield is not the only Indian-owned motorcycle company going electric.

Former Czech motorcycle company Jawa, now owned by Indian company Mahindra, is also developing an electric motorcycle in India.

They say it will have the longest range yet of any electric motorcycle.

There is hardly a motorcycle company in the world that is not developing an electric motorcycle.

However, there is more incentive in India for these two companies and others to produce electric bikes.

India has strict air pollution policies in their major cities that make an electric option very desirable.

The Indian Government has also proposed a deadline for complete electric mobility in the country by 2030 and plans $1.4 billion in incentives for the manufacture and sale of electric motorbikes and scooters while penalising petrol-powered bikes.

Royal Enfield Interceptor tops UK sales charts

Royal Enfield on the up

Royal Enfield’s Interceptor 650 has a new feather to add to its cap after topping motorcycle sales in the UK (for the more than 125cc motorcycles category) in June. The latest accolade joins the fact that the Interceptor 650 is also the best selling naked motorcycle over the June 2019 to June 2020 period in the same region, with the Royal Enfield Himalayan sitting at number four in the same category.  The Interceptor 650 has also been the most successful middleweight motorcycle (250cc-750cc) for the June 2019 to June 2020 period in the UK.

Despite Royal Enfield now being Indian owned, run and manufactured, the brand’s British history and heritage was actually revisited with the 650 models, with the frame developed by Harris Performance, which was acquired by Royal Enfield in 2015. The marque also sought expertise for the development from around the world, which by all accounts included many ex-Triumph staff, with the development tech centre located in the UK as well.

These new sales records represent a remarkable feat, and represent the wide-spread acceptance of these models around the world and the enormous leap forward that Royal Enfield have made from their core 350 and 500 models, while being a first-of-its-kind by any Indian two-wheeler manufacturer selling in the UK.

Royal Enfield's 650s have been a worldwide success
Vimal Sumbly, Head of Business APAC region
Vinod K. Dasari – CEO Royal Enfield

“Our vision is to expand and lead the middleweight motorcycling segment across the world. Towards this vision and further strengthening our position as a truly global brand, Royal Enfield has been consistently focusing on widening its footprint in international markets and creating engaging experiences for enthusiasts. Since its launch, the Interceptor 650 has been gaining momentum among consumers, and has won several awards globally. Dominating the mid-segment in the UK for a year, is a truly remarkable achievement that we are very proud of. We are equally delighted with the success of our adventure-tourer Himalayan which has been among the top 5 best selling middle-weight motorcycles in the UK consistently over the last 12 months. This response from our customers in the UK has propelled Royal Enfield to become one of the fastest growing motorcycle brands in the UK.”

“The Interceptor 650 marked the beginning of a new chapter and was the first truly global motorcycle from Royal Enfield. It has paved the way for us to grow from strength to strength; by building more awareness and aspiration for the brand in international markets, and by growing the 500cc+ category more than 4-times in India. Both, the Interceptor 650 and Himalayan have brought in a lot of first time buyers into Royal Enfield and we believe these motorcycles have a strong potential to grow our international markets.”

The Twins have contributed to the success of Royal Enfield in the APAC region too since their launch, with Vimal Sumbly sharing that these models have been well received in Australia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Vimal Sumbly – Head Business APAC

“We are delighted to share that Interceptor since its launch in the APAC region has been garnering a very good response among our customers and communities. We have over 4,500 Interceptor customers across our markets who subscribe to timeless styling coupled with contemporary performance. The quintessential modern-classic roadster was on an awards winning spree in the region. It won some of the most prestigious awards across Thailand, Australia and Philippines markets. In Thailand, the Interceptor won the “Best Modern Classic in the Middle-Weight category award two years in a row by the coveted Grand Prix group, in Australia it won the “Best LAMS Retro Award by Bike Sales Australia” and in Philippines we won the “Best Roadster Award” by C! magazine.”

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is currently available in Australia from $9,790, while the Continental GT 650 is available from $9,990. Australian importer, UMI group (including MV Agusta, Royal Enfield and Gas Gas), choose not to be members of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries thus Australian sales figures are not officially available.

Launched in September 2018, the Interceptor 650  shot to popularity across global markets, and since its launch, the upper end (500cc and above) of the mid-sized motorcycling segment for Royal Enfield has grown over four times, between FY 2019 and FY 2020.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan has also managed to carve a niche within the adventure touring segment. Inspired by Royal Enfield’s 60 years of enduring history in its spiritual home – The Himalayas – the motorcycle is an accessible and engaging option for riders.

Led by the Interceptor 650 and the Himalayan, Royal Enfield has recorded an overall volume growth of 96% across its international markets in FY20, with Europe registering 100% growth over last year. In the UK, Royal Enfield has made significant inroads in expanding its retail footprint to 67 customer touch points. The brand has also invested in expanding its marketing, sales and service teams to manage this growth.

Roving weekend for Himalayans and Rovers

With the borders opening, Royal Enfield plans a Himalayan & Adventure Weekend of roving around the Byron Bay hinterland on their bikes and in Land Rovers.

The border between Queensland and NSW opens on July 10, just in time for this roving adventure on July 18-19.

However, Queensland riders will still have to obtain an entry pass and may face a long queue when they return across the border as police check your credentials.

The event is supported by Royal Enfield Australia & New Zealand and hosted by Salt Creek Motorcycles and 4WD accessories company The Adventure Garage.

RE spokesman Mal Jarrett says they have been planning the adventure for a while and have been fortunate with the timing.

“Salt Creek Motorcycles is an adventure tour company based in Ballina that uses Himalayans exclusively,” he says.

“The Adventure Garage shares the same shed in Ballina and runs Land Rover adventure tours in the same locale, so it made sense to run an event in unison.”

Riders will find they are roving the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland and Border Ranges roads – both tar and gravel.

The overnight camp is on private land near Kunghur/UKI, NSW, which is a private property with 3500 acres to explore by bike and 4WD and spectacular views of the Border Ranges and NightCap.

While the adventure is best suited for Himalayan adventure bikes, we imagine there will be some riders on other Royal Enfields which are quite competent in many gravel road conditions.

Anyway, Salt Creek Motorcycles have a couple of Himalayans for hire at $260 for the two days.

Riders will be joined by Land Rover owners on the trek.Roving Land Rover Royal Enfield Himalayan

They say they will have qualified senior first-aid personnel attending and a briefing to ensure the vehicles are separated for safety.

There will also be a support vehicle and trailer to transport your gear on both days.

The event is not associated with Land Rover Australia but is restricted to Land Rover owners.

Royal Enfield launches first women’s riding gear

Royal Enfield has expanded its vintage-look apparel to include its first range of women’s riding gear.

Australian importers Urban Moto Imports says their shipments of the gear have been delayed due to the Covid outbreak.

“We are hoping to see stock around springtime,” says spokesman Mal Jarrett.

Meanwhile, you could buy it online from India at the official Royal Enfield website.Royal Enfield vintage-look women’s riding gear

However, there may be differences in Australian/India sizing, so we suggest waiting until they arrive and you can try them on and get the sizing right.

The range includes jackets and pants, leather gloves and leisurewear such as shorts and t-shirts.Royal Enfield vintage-look women’s riding gear

The all-season Nubra jackets and pants and summer Breeze range include rain and thermal liners, CE-certified elbow and shoulder armour, YKK zips and Cordura reinforcement.Royal Enfield vintage-look women’s riding gear

Female riders have been complaining about being neglected by motorcycle gear manufacturers for years although it is getting better and more available.

MotoCAP has also included women’s jackets in their safety ratings.

It is great to see motorcycle manufacturers pay attention to the potential women’s market and providing properly tailored gear for the female form.
