Royal Enfield Official Begins Production in Argentina

Royal Enfield officially began production in its new facility in Argentina. Not long ago I reported that production would begin there, and now it’s officially underway, according to RideApart.

The company has partnered with Grupo Simpa, which it previously used as a distributor to make this new production facility happen. Grupo Simpa will assemble three of Royal Enfield’s models at the new plant.

The new plant will be responsible for the Himalayan, Continental GT, and Interceptor 650. This is a smart move because the bikes have been selling well in Argentina already. It also gives Royal Enfield a good place to export bikes from.

“Argentina and other South American countries have been an important market for Royal Enfield,” said Royal Enfield CEO Vinod K. Dasari.

Dasari said that the local terrain and topography create the perfect place for the company’s bikes, which is why they have been such a hit there.

“Our decision to start assembling our motorcycles in Argentina is proof of our long-term commitment and confidence in the market,” he said.

The focus, at least at first, will be on South American markets for the motorcycles made here. I would expect as things progress this plant will become an important strategic part of Royal Enfield’s plant to take its 650cc models to every market on the globe.

India the next motorcycle powerhouse

The $A31m cash sale of Norton Motorcycles to India’s TVS Motor Company marks India’s turning point towards becoming the next motorcycle powerhouse.

Respected market analysts GlobalData say the sale to India’s third-biggest motorcycle manufacturer with sales of more than 750,00 a year significantly marks TVS motorcycles’ entry into the global mid and high-capacity premium bikes.

GlobalData Senior Automotive Consultant Bakar Sadik Agwan says it will “strengthen the India-based brand’s position in international markets”.

“TVS, which has presence in over 60 markets globally, gets an opportunity to foray into high-powered and premium bike segments,” he says.

“The TVS-Norton deal now makes it quite evident that India two-wheeler makers are keen towards opportunities to scale globally and expand horizontally through tech-partnerships and acquiring manufacturing know-how of ‘classic’ motorcycles.”

In other words, the sale marks a turning point where India could become the next motorcycle powerhouse.

The Indian motorcycle market is already the largest in the world with sales of a gob-smacking 21 million last year.

That eclipses China which has dropped from 27.5m in 2008 to 17m last year.

But most of the bikes sold in India and exported are low-capacity models with low profit margins per vehicle.

TVS, which is India’s second-biggest exporter of motorcycles behind Royal Enfield, now has the ability to enter the higher profit large-capacity premium market.

This is yet another example of how India is becoming the new motorcycle powerhouse.

Many of the world’s leading motorcycle brands are now firmly established in India with production and assembly factories, joint projects and large dealerships, including BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson and Triumph.

Norton had also begun forging links with the Indian company Kinetic Group to jointly produce and sell Norton motorcycles in India. That deal may not go through now.

Fellow British brand Triumph has been working for some years on a global partnership with Pune-based Bajaj Auto to build mid-capacity (200-750cc) motorcycles. Their partnership formally started in January.

In 2016, Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra acquired historic British brand BSA, but the revival of the venerable marquee seems to have stalled after their revival of the Jawa name encountered initial production hitches.

Mahindra also owns France’s Peugeot Motorcycles.

It should be remembered that another iconic British brand, Royal Enfield, gradually became Indian and under Eicher ownership has become one of the most successful brands in the world with sales of more than 800,00 a year.

Royal Enfield develops 834cc V-twin engine

Royal Enfield has only just unveiled their 650cc parallel-twin-engined Interceptor and Continental GT, but are already developing a bigger 834cc V-twin.

The Indian company unveiled the engine in a Bobber prototype soft-tail called the Concept KX to pay homage to their 1938 1140cc V-twin.

While Royal Enfield says the KX will not go into production any time soon, it could be the start of a whole new line of cruiser models with the traditional cruiser-oriented V-twin format.

While the Bobber is designed along the lines of their 1938 model and has old-style girder fork, it has modern tech such as twin ByBre (cheaper Brembo version) brake discs, LED headlight, all-digital circular instrument pod (like the Ducati Scrambler) and an airbox that is part of the frame. Sounds as innovative as something Erik Buel would think up!

No more details on the bike are available, but it does look a lot like the very poplar Indian Scout right down to the dual right-right-side pipes and brown solo seat.

The new 834cc V-twin engine was probably developed in Leicestershire, England, were the Indian-owned company has built a research, design and development “technology centre”.

Enfield of India began assembling Bullet motorcycles under licence from the British company in 1956 and complete bikes by 1962.

The British company went bust in 1971 and Enfield of India was bought by heavy vehicle and bus maker Eicher in 1995.

Royal Enfield is now the oldest motorcycle brand in the world still in production while the Bullet model is the longest motorcycle production run of all time.

We will be very interested to see what other engines and bikes will come from the new UK tech centre!

The 650cc models certainly could do with a scrambler, street tracker and bobber.
