Petersen Automotive Museum Exhibit to Feature Custom Electric Motorcycles

The Petersen Automotive Museum‘s latest exhibit will feature a multitude of the most innovative electric motorcycles ever made by cutting-edge designers. Opening to the public on April 14, 2022, in the Richard Varner Family Gallery, the unique “Electric Revolutionaries” collection is an exclusive look at the ground-breaking creations of the visionaries at the forefront of the ever-expanding electric motorcycle industry.

Highlights of the new exhibition include “KillaJoule,” the land speed racer that made Eva Hakansson the fastest woman on an electric motorcycle with a run of 240.7 mph. Built by Hakansson and her husband at home and with a limited budget, “KillaJoule” is the fastest sidecar streamliner ever, regardless of engine type.

Walt Siegl’s “RONTU”

On the slower side of the spectrum are the innovative solar-powered “Solar Scooter” and “Solar Rickshaw” created by Samuel Aboagye. The Ghanaian teenager constructed both using only salvaged, discarded and recycled materials that he could source for free. Making its worldwide debut will be the intricately designed and exquisitely crafted “The One” by Curtiss Motors. Conceptualized by JT Nesbitt, “The One” features a retro-futuristic design and quality of construction usually only found on hypercars.

A follow-up to the Petersen Museum’s popular first-ever electric motorcycle exhibit, “Electric Revolution” in 2019, the new display features over 25 unique custom electric motorcycles guest curated by Motor/Cycle Arts Foundation Co-Founder Paul D’Orléans.

“I’m super excited to assemble this wildly diverse collection of EV pioneers. ‘Electric Revolutionaries’ really does represent the range of interest in an electric future, from a humble teen in Ghana making EVs from scrap, to genius artisans building conceptual and boundary-pushing designs, to speed demons and global superstar designers interested in pushing mobility into the green zone,” said d’Orleans. “Electric Revolutionaries” is produced by the Motor/Cycle Arts Foundation and Sasha Tcherevkoff with support from LiveWire.

“It is incredible how far electric motorcycles have come in the short time from our first exhibit in 2019,” said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “This new display gives a unique and close-up look at the innovative machines and the creators behind them pushing the boundaries of motorcycle electrification and design. The detail, level of craftsmanship, and unorthodox thinking behind these electric motorcycles make them must-sees.”

Other notable electric motorcycles on display include Joey Ruiter’s “NOMOTO,” which camouflages as utilitarian street furniture and his geometric “Moto Undone” concept. Also part of the exhibit is famed motorcycle designer Walt Siegl’s ultra-minimalist “RONTU” that uses carbon fiber, aluminum, and a lack of body panels to help weigh a scant 100 lbs. Hugo Eccles’ avant-garde and award-winning “XP Zero,” a radical reinterpretation of a production Zero SR/F into a futuristic cafe racer, is also among the extensive collection of unique and innovative electric motorcycles.

Last year, after nearly four decades of indoor shows, the Progressive International Motorcycle Shows relaunched as Progressive IMS Outdoors and put on outdoor powersports festivals at various cities around the U.S. You can read our 2021 show report here. In February, Progressive IMS Outdoors announced its 2022 tour schedule. At every stop on the tour, the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show brings together some of the best custom motorcycles. There are winners in each round, as well as an overall champion. The following is a press release from IMS Outdoors.

Progressive IMS Outdoors, the Powersports industry’s leading consumer motorcycle tour that connects enthusiasts with top brands, today announced two strategic partnerships for the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show (UBCBS).

  • Dennis Kirk, the world’s largest retailer of aftermarket parts, apparel and accessories for every powersport, is the new title sponsor of UBCBS. Jordan Mastagni, president of Hot Bike Magazine, will take over management of UBCBS.

Classes for the 2022 competition include Custom Street, Custom Classic and Freestyle, plus the People’s Choice Award. Winners of the Custom Street, Custom Classic, and Freestyle classes will take home $500 – $1,000 in cash from Progressive IMS Outdoors, plus prizes from sponsors. Winners of each round are invited to compete in the Championship Round at the end of the tour for the title “King of Builders”, $10,000 in cash, and prizes.

Classes 

Custom Street Class
Must start with 2000 and later major OEM engine and frame as a base. Must maintain original engine cradle configuration. The neck may be cut to rake or stretch frame. Hardtail sections and wide tire alterations are acceptable. Must be a two- or three-wheel motorcycle configuration as defined by DMV. The vehicle must run and be operable.

Custom Classic Class
Must have a 1999 or earlier OEM engine; replica engines are not allowed. Custom or stock modified frames are acceptable. Must be a two or three-wheel motorcycle configuration as defined by DMV. The vehicle must run and be operable.

Freestyle Class
Anything goes, two- or three-wheel drivetrain/chassis motorcycle configuration defined by the DMV. The only limitation is the builder’s imagination and resources. The vehicle must run and be operable.

Arizona Passes Lane Filtering Law

Lane filtering, also known as lane splitting, where motorcycles share lanes with cars and trucks to reduce traffic congestion, is a widespread practice around the world. Two studies in 2014 showed that the practice is safe.

In the U.S., only California allowed the practice for many years, though it was not legally sanctioned until 2016. In 2018, Utah became the second state to legally recognize lane filtering, and Montana passed a similar law in 2021. Arizona is now the fourth state to allow lane filtering.

The following is a press release issued by the American Motorcyclist Association:

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a law legalizing lane filtering after the bill cruised through both the Senate and House chambers with strong bipartisan support. The law now puts the state in the company of California, Utah, and Montana.

The passage of Senate Bill 1273, sponsored by Sen. Tyler Pace (R-Mesa District 23) and championed by ABATE of Arizona, allows riders to cruise slowly between lanes at speeds no faster than 15 mph if the other vehicles are stopped. Modeled off Utah’s legislation, the practice can only be done on roads posted at 45 mph or less. It does not allow riders to pass on the shoulder or on the median.

“This law has been four years in the making,” said Michael Infanzon, legislative director for ABATE of Arizona. “But we had a really great sponsor for the bill this year with Senator Pace. He is an active motorcycle rider and it was key to have someone who understood the danger of being rear-ended. This is all about safety and nothing more than part of the plan to reduce motorcycle fatalities in Arizona.”

With the law set to be in effect 90 days after adjournment, likely to be mid-September, ABATE of Arizona and the Arizona Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Foundation will be working with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the Department of Public Safety to educate riders and the public on the new legislation.

“Once the legislation was sent to the Governor’s desk, we started collaborating with the government to get PSAs and TV spots moving,” said Infanzon.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation’s most recent data, 30 percent of all motorcycle crashes in 2020, including 11 out of 106 fatal motorcycle collisions, were the result of rear-end collisions.

“ABATE of Arizona put up a strong showing to successfully get this law signed,” said the American Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) Western States Representative Nicholas Haris. “It is a welcome sight to see more states adopting commonsense safety laws that protect motorcyclists when they are most vulnerable to a collision. The AMA is committed to working with riders nationwide on efforts to pass similar legislation and educating the public about its benefits.”

Meanwhile, Utah has extended the authorization for motorcyclists to lane filter for an additional five years to allow state officials to review the practice and gather data on its safety benefits. With the passage of H.B. 10 on March 22, the state is affirming that its initial experience has been a success worth continuing.

“With the signing of H.B. 10 Utahans have recognized the benefits of lane filtering,” said AMA On-Highway Government Relations Manager Tiffany Cipoletti, “which allows motorcyclists the choice to filter in traffic when it is safe to do so.”

Utah legalized lane filtering in 2018 with the initial bill and now the extension sponsored by state Rep. Walt Brooks (R-St. George District 75).

“I am very happy to have the support of the Department of Public Safety and of the legislature to extend lane filtering for an addition five years,” said Rep. Brooks. “The original sunset of three years, and dealing with COVID, did not provide the data needed to remove the sunset. I am confident that as riders use lane filtering properly over the next five years, the general public will become familiar with the practice and the data will prove this is a good policy for Utah, and will become permanent.”

Rep. Brooks has been a vocal supporter of the practice as a motorcyclist himself, and has assisted efforts in other states like Arizona to legalize the practice. The AMA is grateful for Rep. Brooks’ support of motorcyclists and the safe practice of lane-filtering.

“We are fortunate to have motorcyclists in elected office like Representative Brooks and Senator Pace,” said AMA Director of Government Relations Michael Sayre. “Brooks’ firsthand experience as a rider and work to gain the support of law enforcement in Utah were very important and have helped lay the groundwork for success in other states.”

The AMA endorses lane splitting, given the long-term success in California and the University of California-Berkeley research study showing that the practice enhances motorcycle safety. The AMA will assist groups and individuals working to bring legal lane splitting and/or filtering to their state.

“As lane-splitting support continues to gain traction across the country,” the AMA’s Cipoletti said, “we are eager to help more motorcyclists engage their state legislatures on this issue.”

Currently, the AMA is actively engaged in supporting a lane filtering bill in Oklahoma (H.B. 2667), too.

Can-Am to Launch All-Electric Motorcycles

BRP has announced that the iconic Can-Am brand, which currently includes Spyder and Ryker three-wheelers and four-wheeled ATVs and side-by-sides, will return to its motorcycle roots. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Can-Am brand, BRP will launch a family of electric two-wheel motorcycles.

“With the motorcycle industry shifting to electric, we saw an opportunity to reclaim our motorcycle heritage and to re-enter the market,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP. “This new product category is extremely important to us, and we are thrilled that Can-Am motorcycles are the first EV models in BRP’s electric lineup to be confirmed to consumers. Many of us have very fond memories of riding the early dirtbike models, and now we look forward to building on the rich history of the Can-Am brand to inspire and impress a new generation of motorcyclists and electric vehicle enthusiasts.”

BRP says the first models of the complete, all-electric lineup will be available in mid-2024. Based on the teaser photo, the lineup will include a roadster and an adventure bike. Bikes on the far right are harder to identify, but may include a cruiser and an all-electric version of the Spyder or Ryker three-wheelers.

The first Can-Am motorcycle was introduced in 1973 and the brand became a dominant force in motocross and endurance racing. The success elevated the brand to an iconic status right from the start. Half a century later, BRP says the new products have been developed with many different riders in mind, more specifically for those who crave adventure, seek the thrill of the open road, long for a quiet ride in the country, or want to liven up the city streets. BRP says riders can expect these new state-of-the-art electric Can-Am motorcycles to be perfect for everyday commuting and, to stay true to the track-and-trail heritage of the brand, recreational on- and off-road riding.

Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club Celebrates 45th Anniversary

Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club

The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club is celebrating its 45th Anniversary this year. Founded in 1977, VJMC is the premier North American Club dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of vintage Japanese motorcycles (20 years old or older) and the promotion of the sport of motorcycling. The VJMC hallmark is “participation at all levels and to have fun” – for all motorcycle enthusiasts young and old.

This year’s National Rally will take place in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, June 23-26. Pre-registration is required for all attendees.

Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club

Membership is $35 per year and includes a full-color 64+ page magazine printed six times per year, rides, rallies and shows at local, regional, and national events. The VJMC has over 3,300 members and is a totally volunteer-based, nonprofit club.

PBTF Announces Second Annual Ride for Kids Day

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s second annual national Ride for Kids Day is scheduled for September 18, 2022. Taking place in the heart of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, national Ride for Kids Day gives motorcyclists and powersports enthusiasts across the nation an opportunity to take a stand against pediatric brain tumors – the deadliest childhood cancer. Whether participating in one of the dozens of organized rides, riding as a group, or as an individual, everyone can take part in the day.

As the nation’s longest running charitable motorcycle ride, Ride for Kids has raised tens of millions of dollars to fund research and family support programs for children battling brain tumors. In 2021, thousands of riders participated in the inaugural Ride for Kids Day. With the support of PBTF’s valued corporate partners and donors, over $1.4 million was raised last year for the cause. Mission programs like PBTF’s emergency financial assistance Butterfly Fund and Early Career Development research grants would not be possible without the support of the motorcycle community’s involvement in Ride for Kids.

“National Ride for Kids Day is an opportunity for riders across the nation to hit the road in support of kids battling brain tumors,” says Bob McNamara, PBTF’s National Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement. “Any rider anywhere can contribute to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation by simply doing what they love, riding. We’re excited to continue mobilizing the motorcycling community through National Ride for Kids Day in support of families who need us now more than ever.”

Ride for Kids Day is made possible in part through the generous support of corporate partners like American Honda, the Comoto Family of Brands, and GEICO Motorcycle, along with dozens of other local event sponsors. Throughout the 2022 riding season, PBTF will release information on ways each of these national brands will be supporting the mission to end pediatric brain tumors.
