Green light set for group riding

Riders should be able to travel in a group of up to 10 under the first step of National Cabinet’s three-step plan announced today (8 May 2020) to ease coronavirus restrictions.

The states and territories are yet to confirm the easing and timing of restrictions. We will update as the rules on non-essential travel are applied.

Group limit

Dangers of organised group rides numbersGroup of 10 riders

However, it appears that a group of up to 10 will be permitted outdoors, which should give the green light to groups of riders and pillions.

They are already allowed to ride and gather in groups of up to 10 in Western Australia and South Australia.

Riders will still have to practise social distancing when they stop at their favourite cafes or restaurants which have also being given permission to open.

WA riders must stay in their regions, but from Monday SA riders can ride throughout the state.

NSW riders can ride for exercise.

From May 15, Queensland riders can travel up to 150km radius for recreation (500km if they live and travel in the outback).

For a Brisbane rider that means south to the border, north to Gympie, west to Dalby and southwest to Stanthorpe.

There is currently no limit if you are visiting another household from this Sunday (10 May 2020).Travel

Victorian riders are still housebound unless they are travelling for work, education, groceries, medical reasons or to visit a partner with whom they do not live.

Premier Daniel Andrews says he will announce an update on eased restrictions next week. Not that riders will be likely to venture out this weekend given the weather conditions.

Travel limits

The Queensland 50km radius limit which started last weekend and still exists is believed to have led to overcrowding of riders at various cafes on popular motorcycle routes.

Extending the radius limit to 150km will allow riders to go further and find less-crowded venues to stop for a coffee and a meal.

Queensland Police Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler has advised motorists that they will have additional resources patrolling for breaches of travel restrictions this weekend, particularly on the Gold Coast.

Riders in most states, except South Australia and Western Australia, should be aware that you cannot yet travel to a location and stay overnight.

So any ride you do will require you to return home the same day.

Tourism accommodation will be allowed in Queensland in the second stage from June 12.

You also cannot cross borders without official exemptions. Queensland hopes to open its borders in the third stage from July 12.

Inquiry may probe wire rope barriers

Riders are being urged to make submissions about the perceived dangers of wire rope barriers to a Victorian inquiry into the road toll.

Submissions to the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee will be accepted online until 30 June 2020.

Committee member and Liberal MP for Western Victoria, Beverley McArthur, invited Motorcycle Safety Consultant John Nelson to make a submission on the perceived dangers of wire rope barriers, saying the remit of the committee is “very wide”.

She says a public submission “doesn’t need to be long, or detailed, or deal with all potential causes”.

Many submissions are “less than a page long, and detail a specific idea or experience”, she says.

John has long campaigned against WRBs and recently warned of the rollout of higher wire rope barriers which could be even more dangerous to riders.

New Safe Direction wire rope barriersNew Safe Direction wire rope barriers

“I encourage all Australian riders to make a submission no matter how small,” he says.

“Every submission will be read and considered.  Be vocal and to the point.  Silence and apathy does not achieve change.”

Inquiry remitwire rope barriers road safety

Beverly told John in an email that the inquiry will consider all areas of road safety, including existing ‘solutions’.

“There is an important opportunity to investigate the whole issue of wire rope barriers thoroughly,” she says.

“It would be helpful, however, if you could encourage anyone who feels strongly to write in and briefly explain their opposition.

“The more submissions we get to that effect, the better the chance we will have of making it a high profile part of the inquiry.

I’d be grateful if you could pass this on to anyone who you know feels strongly about this.

“Having looked through the submissions to date, I only saw one which raised wire rope barriers, so I thought I would pass this on in the hope of stirring up some interest.”

John’s call for submissions on wire rope barriers follows his recent concerns about new wire rope barriers that will soon replace the current WRBs around Australia.

New wire rope barriers WRBThe BRIFEN MASH compliant cable barriers will supersede current NCHRP-350 systems that will be phased out from 30 September 2020 in NSW with other states set to follow.

Supplier Safe Direction say the Brifen system has been crash tested.

However, John says the new barrier type is primarily designed for cars and SUVs.

“Crash testing for motorcycles would not have been done, simply because the outcomes are already known,” says John who has also been a rider trainer and crash analyst.

John Nelson wire rope barriersJohn Nelson

“I was shocked to see the new WRB design and wonder how Brifen can create a barrier system that is even worse for motorcyclists impacting the barrier directly.

“The only scenario that is being touted by the road safety community is the out-of-control oncoming vehicle, and a rider is going past the site.

“Each time I challenge the pro-WRB community to show the research and evidence that WRB saves motorcyclists, they can’t, won’t and disappear.”

New design

New Safe Direction wire rope barriersNew Safe Direction wire rope barriers

The new design is higher and the cable is spread over a wider area with less space at the bottom.

John says the original design meant riders were prone to going over the top and being injured by the cable and posts.

“The new design would keep a rider from going over the top and extrude a body through the cable and posts,” he says.

Many riders view wire rope barriers as “people slicers”.

However, Australian road safety consultancy Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd Research and Evaluations Lead and motorcyclist Dr Tana Tan says they have no issue with wire rope barriers on straights as riders don’t tend to fall asleep as much as drivers.

“That’s because we have limited tank range so we stop more frequently, we generally monitor our fatigue better and we have to be alert to ride,” he says.

“The issue is with placing WRBs on curves.”

Transport departments throughout Australia adhere to the standards published in the Austroads Guide to Road Design which do not permit wire rope barriers on curves of less than 200 metre radius.

Last Motorcycle on Earth film too real

In these days of pandemic where many can’t even ride their motorcycles, The Last Motorcycle on Earth depicts a world where motorbikes are banned. The film is almost too real!

Director Eric Ristau tried to get crowd-funding for the movie and failed, but went ahead and produced it anyway.

It is now available for download her from Vimeo on Demand for $A3 or North American and UK viewers can stream it from Amazon Prime.

Apart from the cold reality of the film’s theme, it’s a great show to pass the time during the current pandemic lockdown.

The Last Motorcycle on Earth!Scene from The Last Motorcycle on Earth!

The film depicts a not-too-distant future where motorcycles are banned because they are the last dangerous vehicles in a world of electric automated cars, trucks and buses.

It’s the fictional story of a vintage motorcycle collector and bike builder, Conrad Mendel (played by co-producer Neil “Morto” Olson), as he grapples with a new world of technology that threatens to destroy his passion and way of life.

Last Motorcycle on Earth goes aheadScene from The Last Motorcycle on Earth!

Down to earth film

The sad fact is that the film may not be too far from reality.

The safety nannies consistently and unfairly target motorcycles and riders. They want motorcycles off the road.

The Last Motorcycle on Earth!Scene from The Last Motorcycle on Earth!

In fact, it’s already happening.

Cities such as Paris, Singapore and Milan ban older motorcycles from their CBDs for pollution reasons and they have been banned in some Mid-East and Asian cites because they are the preferred vehicles of assassins and thieves.

Around the world police and politicians are also seeking tougher laws on “bikies” and loud exhausts.

And in 2017, a group of American motorcycle industry luminaries, aptly called “Give a Shift”, released a report on the future of motorcycling saying bikes are in danger of being killed off by autonomous vehicles.

With the rise of allegedly safe, electric-powered automated vehicles, motorcycles will stand out as the last “dangerous” and polluting vehicle.

Let’s hope the film raises public awareness of the possible dangers to our freedom.

BMW Motorrad offers five-year helmet warranty

BMW Motorrad has extended its helmet warranty from two years to five years which is basically the suggested life of a helmet anyway.

Most helmet manufacturers suggest you swap a helmet over at fives years mainly because of the degrading of the interior lining.

Several other helmet manufacturers such as Shark, Shoei and Schuberth offer five-year warranties, while Nolan offers a seven-year warranty.

BMW warrantyBMW Motorrad motorcycle helmet life warranty

The BMW warranty will be backdated to the start of this year. The warranty applies to all helmets bought from a participating BMW Motorrad dealer.

The warranty covers material and manufacturing defects of the product.

However, BMW Motorrad communication systems are excluded from the warranty extension.

This means that the warranty expressly does not apply if a defect or damage is caused by improper handling, an accident or the improper installation of the system and accessories – even by third parties.

Scratches on the visor, sun shield, helmet shell or plastic parts are also not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Most manufacturers have similar warranty exclusions.BMW Motorrad motorcycle helmet life warranty

Helmet life span

The life of a helmet is about five years as the glues, resins and other materials used in construction lose their effectiveness and the lining deteriorates.

Be aware that your helmet may have sat on the shelf for some time before you bought it, so the life of the helmet may be shorter. Ask the dealer to prove date of manufacture.

However, the BMW five-year warranty is from the day of purchase, not manufacture.

Prolong helmet lifeBMW Motorrad motorcycle helmet life warranty

You can prolong your helmet if you store it properly when you’re not using it. Keep it in a cool, dry place and store it inside the helmet bag in which it came.

It’s not the outside that deteriorates, but the inside foam and fabric lining. If you notice the helmet getting loose or some of the lining coming out or it leaves little black flakes in your hair, then it’s time to retire it, whether it has reached the five years or not.

Frequent use, sweating in your helmet, having greasy hair or using a lot of “hair product” can all aid in compacting the foam and making the interior lining degenerate faster than normal use.

You can also prolong the life of your helmet interior by wearing a helmet liner, balaclava or scarf that keeps the sweat off.

Another good reason to replace your helmet every five years is that helmet technology is advancing all the time and a new helmet is going to offer more protection than something five years old.

AIMExpo Changing Format To A Trade-Only Event

Other key change is a new date: January 21-23, 2021.

Begin press release:

The MIC’s American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) is moving to January 21-23, 2021 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Previously scheduled for this October, North America’s largest powersports show is changing more than timing; the show will become a trade-only event and emerge as an integral part of the buying season.

“Timing is everything,” said Cinnamon Kernes, vice president and general manager, MIC Events. “Transitioning to the first quarter has been part of a long-term strategic plan for AIMExpo, along with providing more focus on our core audience – dealers.  These changes not only align the show with the ideal buying time for dealers and retailers, but also provide the perfect opportunity for brands to reconnect with dealers, kicking off what will be a pivotal year for the industry, additionally, this move to January opens the door to partner with a major distributor in a much more strategic and meaningful way.”

A trade-only show allows AIMExpo to concentrate on industry needs and education at a time when powersports needs it most.  Quality over quantity is necessary in the new trade show landscape.  With this new focus on retailers, the show will now take place over three days instead of four, saving exhibitors and attendees time and money.

COVID has forced retailers and manufacturers to change the way they do business – at warp speed.  AIMExpo’s education, developed in partnership with PSB will focus on these ideas and innovations to help retailers improve efficiency, stay competitive and improve bottom lines.  AIMExpo will provide tools and solutions for retailers as we start the new year.

“With all that’s happened recently, transitioning to Q1 makes sense now more than ever,” said Andre Albert, director of sales and marketing. “The show will align with the order-writing time of year; it will help alleviate financial burdens in 2020, and allows us to focus on the industry and its needs. This change in timing and focus allows brands to connect  with the most engaged buyers looking for growth and success in 2021.  We’re excited and looking forward to the evolution of AIMExpo – Together We Rise.”

Ducati Launches Fundraiser To Support The Policlinico di S.Orsola Hospital in Bologna

Ducati is launching an international fundraising effort to finance the rehabilitation programs that the S.Orsola general hospital of Bologna has developed for patients in post COVID-19 recovery.

Begin press release:

Ducati launches #raceagainstCovid, a fundraiser organized by the Borgo Panigale company in favor of the Policlinico di S.Orsola of Bologna, an excellence of the area as well as one of the largest hospitals in Italy. In this way, Ducati wishes to contribute to the fight against COVID-19, and it does so with the approach that most distinguishes the company – that of great challenges, forming a team, sharing a goal and looking to the future.

For this reason, Ducati has rallied together its entire family – employees of the Bologna headquarters and its subsidiaries throughout the world, DOC (Ducati clubs), dealers, suppliers, partners, riders and enthusiasts – to offer support to those who work every day on the front lines to protect the health of citizens.

Making your contribution to the fundraising is simple: for those wishing to donate by credit card, please visit the dedicated page of the GoFundMe platform (of which a mobile app is also available); for those who prefer to participate by bank transfer, simply make a payment to the account of the hospital (IBAN IT68E0306902480100000300027), indicating the cause “raceagainstCovid donation.” The donations are received directly by the University Hospital of Bologna Policlinico di S. Orsola.

The goal is to collect, by June 2020, the necessary funds to finance instrumentation, research and staff of the Policlinico di S.Orsola of Bologna dedicated to the exclusive care of patients in post COVID-19 recovery.

“Even on those who recover, COVID-19 often leaves a significant aftermath on organs and systems that it has attacked with its harsh action. Lungs, heart, circulatory system, kidneys, brain are the preferred targets of the virus. Impairments of lung, cardiac and renal function occur, the risk of thrombosis remains and there may also be neurological residues. To monitor these patients, treat them and follow their rehabilitation, dedicated multidisciplinary areas have been set up with cardiologists, neurologists, nephrologists, pneumologists, physiatrists and infectious disease specialists. For these patients, even complex rehabilitation programs are proposed that require dedicated personnel and specific equipment such as, for example, telemedicine tools for remote patient control, robots for patient rehabilitation at home, ultrasound, echocardiographs, electro-stimulators of respiratory muscles and instruments that measure their strength and train them, traditional active and passive exercise bicycles (for patients with respiratory problems forced in bed),” declared Chiara Gibertoni, General Manager of the Policlinico di S.Orsola.

Ducati has always been an active part of its territory, which is characterized internationally for the Motor Valley of ‘masterpieces’ on two and four wheels, but also for its excellent medical facilities. The Emilia-Romagna Region has become a national hub for the treatment of COVID-19. The same Ducatisti from all over the world are extremely close to this land which has always been the location for the factory where the red bikes of Borgo Panigale come from.

“Faced with a tragedy such as that caused by the COVID-19 virus, one can remain immobile, paralyzed by terror, or react quickly, precisely and in a coordinated way. Helping the health system in every possible way is a duty of every single citizen and also of the companies that are a fundamental part of the social fabric,” declared Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO. “Ducati was founded in Bologna ninety-four years ago and is therefore inextricably linked to this city. I am sure that our riders, fans and enthusiasts from all over the world will join us to give the city and the whole country a strong sign of solidarity, as well as sincere thanks for the effort and dedication that the doctors are making to combat this new and still not fully understood serious illness.”

The members of the Ducati Board started off the fundraising collection, followed by many other employees. The amount collected was then doubled by the company, reaching the amount of € 100,000, the starting point of #raceagainstCOVID.

“In all these weeks of Coronavirus emergency, our regional public health service has received incredible demonstrations of support in the face of the outstanding work of doctors, nurses and operators to whom we will always be grateful,” commented the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini. “A lot of affinity and many donations, from those who could give a lot and from those who could give less, but really a desire to stay united against the pandemic that still continues today. This is why Ducati’s initiative is just as wonderful and important: to mobilize both its employees, a formidable team, and Ducati enthusiasts all over the world for a fundraiser that will support the post-COVID rehabilitation activity of the S.Orsola hospital in Bologna, given the important consequences that it can still have on the organs and systems attacked by the virus of those who recover. Both dedicated staff and specific equipment are needed, and Ducati is on the track for this: thanks very much to Claudio Domenicali, to the entire Borgo Panigale team and to anyone who loves the red bikes for what is already a certain victory. Thanks again.”

Twisted ASBK Interviews

With the current break in racing activity we thought it a good idea to start rolling out this series that I have dubbed ‘Twisted ASBK Interviews’.

This is a somewhat comedic departure from the norm that hopes to shed some light into the personalities of ASBK Superbike riders.

Some of these were conducted in person at the track earlier this year, while others were conducted more recently over the phone.

A few of them certainly got me laughing out loud and I hope you view them through the prism of good fun they were taken in. This time around it is Aiden Wagner’s turn to answer the curly ones…

Aiden Wagner: “Depends on what track, few fighters in the paddock that can fight really well at some different locations and not so good at others. Like to think I trust everyone around me in the Superbike class, but for a fierce fight I have had a good fight with Maxwell, obviously.”

M.A. launch recreational and social ride scheme at affiliated ride parks

Motorcycling Australia is launching a new national program that will see the sporting body responsible for racing in Australia from a spin-off they are calling Ride Parks Australia (RPA). This has been designed to encourage recreational riding at existing local clubs around Australia.

MA CEO, Peter Doyle

“Ride Parks Australia is all about giving the social rider access to quality local facilities at an affordable price,” explained Doyle. “RPA is not based around the sporting side of the business and the restrictive rules and regulations that come with competition. These ride days are for families, friends and kids to enjoy social riding at venues that can cater for all levels of riders.”

By using a streamlined Public Liability (PL) insurance program, Motorcycling Australia is set to make recreational riding easier and more affordable.

Trialled in several states over the past 18 months with great success, Ride Parks Australia’s – Ride Park Days (RPD) is Motorcycling Australia’s brand of non-competitive and fun ride days aimed at the general riding public.

The new program has also been designed to appeal to current MA members who wish to enjoy their favourite clubs and venues that choose to be part of RPA.

RPDs has been created for social and recreational riding only and provide opportunities for the greater community and non-MA members to access their local tracks which provide a safe, family friendly environment to ride at an affordable cost.

The RPD entry fee is structured to ensure accessing local tracks is extremely affordable for riders and families. MA annual Licence holders will pay the same riding fees as non-MA members but benefit from the cover provided under the MA Personal Accident (PA) scheme with their annual license.
