Raising the stakes: Marquez aiming for perfect 10 in Germany

One man who could be a very interesting question mark is Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar). Qualifying woes were nowhere to be found at Assen, and the Spaniard got a great start to lead the way…and then crashed. But before the blip Rins’ points scoring run has been impeccable and previously it was Germany last season the Suzuki rider last failed to score. What does that mean? It means we don’t have a good reference for his speed at the track, which has sky-rocketed everywhere in 2019 anyway, and that combined with the sweet-handling Suzuki could make an interesting addition to the stakes at one of the tightest and twistiest venues of the year. Rookie Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) got back on form at Assen too, and although he trails Quartararo by a margin in the fight for Rookie of the Year, he joined the Frenchman in leading a premier class race for the first time, albeit briefly.

HRC test rider Stefan Bradl has been called into Repsol Honda as Jorge Lorenzo’s replacement for round nine of the 2019 MotoGP World Championship at the Sachsenring in Germany this weekend.

Lorenzo crashed heavily during the opening practice session at Assen last weekend, resulting a fractured T6 and T8 vertebrae while forcing him out a minimum of two grand prix.

“I’m very excited to join the Repsol Honda team in Germany,” said Bradl. “It’s a special race for me as my home race, obviously I am very sorry for Lorenzo and I wish him the fastest recovery possible and to come back strong.

“I am glad to be able to help the team and HRC, let’s see what this weekend brings. We have been working well with Honda and I am grateful to them for this opportunity.”

Bradl will join reigning champion and points leader Marc Marquez for his second appearance of 2019 after finishing P10 in Jerez, with the German having two top-five finishes to his name at the Sachsenring while riding a Honda in 2012 and 2013.

Assen DNF the result of severe arm-pump for Zarco

Image: Supplied.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Johann Zarco surprisingly withdrew from the Dutch grand prix last weekend just 10 laps into the encounter, the Frenchman ultimately succumbing to severe arm-pump.

Zarco anticipated the Assen circuit to be demanding on his forearms, and despite his best efforts to manage it, he experienced a loss of feeling with the bike, prompting him to pull in for his own safety.

“It is a hard track for all the riders I think and I got this problem, which I was able to control the last two years and this year not,” Zarco explained. “The good thing was the first 10 laps and to be able to catch the others with pace and be able to overtake as a racer.

“We are working a lot and changing the bike a lot to give me this feeling or possibilities to improve. After 10 laps I did a few mistakes. I had the feeling I was not holding the bike any more and before something bad happened I had to stop.”

In what has been a challenging year, Zarco is positioned 17th in the championship rankings with 16 points to his name as the MotoGP series heads to the Sachsenring in Germany.

The venerable Honda CB750 will be a highlight of the 31st annual Laverda Concours which includes free entry for concours motorcycles.

The Laverda Concours is the biggest and best motorcycle show in Queensland and one of the biggest in the nation. The concours gets its name from Club Laverda Queensland who began the show in 1982 with the Ducati Owners Club who later pulled out.

It will be held this year on Sunday, July 21, at the Redland Showgrounds.

About 30 Honda CB750 models will on display to celebrate the bike’s 50th anniversary.

Honda 750/4 Club spokesman John McNair says their display will include race bikes, some with Rickman kits and a racing outfit.

“Some will be in their original unrestored condition and some will be pristine restored bikes,” John says.

“We will have several from among the first 50 sold in the country, including sandcast and even a diecast model worth up to about $30,000.”

The Laverda Concours gate price for spectators remains at $10 for over 15s with free on-site motorcycle parking.

However, Concours event manager Bryan Horn says they have removed the $10 fee to enter your motorcycle in the concours.

“That’s big news and should equate to more bikes in the paddock,” he says.

“We want to focus on enthusiast clubs this year.

“Not only will the Hondas 750/4 Club have a display but there will be a special trophy supplied by Oliver’s Motorcycles for the best Triumph Bonneville to mark its 60th anniversary.

“I’ve also had a call from an historic motorcycle club member in Rockhampton who says he is bringing his 1959 model,” Bryan says.

“We are keen to highlight the vibrant enthusiast motorcycle club community here in the great South East.”

Bannan Promotions addresses absence from AUS Supercross series

Image: Foremost Media.

Bannan Promotions’ Scott Bannan has addressed the company’s absence in the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship, which comes after playing a prominent role in the discipline’s resurgence by hosting Queensland-based races in the series since 2015.

Bannan indicated it’s decision to step away followed a change in direction of the championship with commercial rights holder AUS SX Holdings – promoter of the AUS-X Open – who assumed the rights from Motorcycling Australia ahead of the 2018 season.

The operation made up two rounds of Australian supercross for four successive year at various locations in the sunshine state, with it’s very own Jimboomba venue being the landmark Queensland stop each year.

“It all started last year when Motorcycling Australia sold the commercial rights to AME (AUS SX Holdings),” Bannan told MotoOnline.com.au. “We knew nothing about it, and when we were notified, that’s when Scott Anderson and Mark Gilbert pulled out immediately. We toughed it out for another year and would see how it would go, but it didn’t go the way we though it would.

“We just didn’t like the way it was going and we were continually not agreeing on a lot of things, so at the end of the day, we just couldn’t come to an agreement. I don’t want to promote if we can’t promote the way we want to.

“We’re obviously not doing anything this year, we might do a few practice days so the privateer guys can get some practice in, but that’s probably about it. It’s a hobby for us – we have other businesses that pay the bills.”

Entering the Australian supercross arena last year, Troy Bayliss Events has stepped up its efforts by hosting three rounds in 2019 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Gilman Speedway and WIN Stadium in Wollongong, marking rounds one through to three.

The fourth and fifth rounds will be operated by AUS SX Holdings with the S-X Open Auckland in New Zealand, and AUS-X Open Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.

Panic over hi-vis vest proposal

An incorrect News Ltd media report that Victoria proposes introducing hi-vis for all riders has caused some level of social media panic in the riding community.

Riders have been sharing the inaccurate reports which were lifted from the “Road Safety Regulations 2019 summary paper for consultation”.

So, for a start, it’s only a proposal at this stage.

The sentence lifted out of context is “Driving a motorcycle without a securely fitted and fastened high visibility vest of jacket”.

It is under a section that suggests introducing demerit points for the offence.

Learner riders have been required to wear hi-vis vests in Victoria from some years now. The proposal only adds a demerit point.high visibility motorcycle clothing panic

Panic stations

The erroneous News Ltd articles have been shared on social media causing panic among Victorian and interstate riders amid threats to protest.

Victorian Motorcycle Exports Advisory Panel member Dean Marks says there was a similar social media response when hi-vis for learners was proposed.

However, he points out that “the riding community sat on their collective thumbs” and only a small number turned out at a rally against the changes.

Dean blames infighting among “fractured” rider representative groups in the state for the apathy.

While the Victorian Government is not proposing hi-vis for all riders, many consider it may be on the agenda in future.

In 2015, France introduced a rule where riders have to carry a hi-vis vest to wear during a breakdown.

Meanwhile, the South Australian Government is considering following Victoria with hi-vis for novice riders.

This is despite the road toll in Victoria rising in the past four years since introducing hi-vis vests which seems to indicate the increased motorcycle conspicuity of a hi-vis vests has had no beneficial effect.

University of Melbourne’s Chair of Statistics, Prof Richard Huggins, says his review of several studies on motorcycle conspicuity and “look but fail to see” (SMIDSY – Sorry, Mate I Didn’t See You) accidents casts “sufficient doubt” on the effectiveness of hi-vis.

He has previously called for a repeal of the Victorian mandatory requirement.

Miller expresses frustration following difficult Dutch GP

Australian fan-favourite Jack Miller has expressed frustration following a difficult outing at the Dutch GP, explaining the Michelin tyre offering has limited his performance over the last two rounds.

The Pramac Racing ace piloted his Ducati Desmosedici GP19 to P9 after starting from the fourth row, where he was unable to utilise Michelin’s soft option on the rear, and instead, was forced to be equipped with the hard offering and settle into a ‘steady’ race pace.

“10 seconds between Petrucci and myself is not good enough – I’m not happy with that,” Miller told Crash.net. “But I didn’t feel comfortable. We needed some points today – I managed to do that – I never lost a position over the race so I’ll take it.

“I’m not happy at all. I made my thoughts clear to the guys in blue and to other people, just to see what’s actually going on here because it’s two races in a row that we can’t use the soft at all – no way.

“Three laps and the thing’s done – well, the tyre life’s there and the weight’s there. In theory you can make the race distance. But your race pace is going to be all over the place. So it’s go with the stable, steady hard option.”

“You’re going that slow into the corner that when you come out in third gear it’s almost too long. It doesn’t want to pull it. You’re already feeling it coming around on you. You feel it and think, ‘That’s me – that’s all I got.’ So it’s frustration for the whole race. You’re riding to a number, to a lap-time. That’s all you can do.”

The Queenslander is currently ranked eighth in the championship standings as the series heads to the Sachsenring in Germany this weekend.

Noren matches career-best moto result in JGRMX Suzuki debut

Image: Supplied.

Swedish talent Fredrik Noren matched his career-best moto finish in the premier class while making his debut with JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing at Southwick’s sixth round of the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Called into factory squad just last week to fill-in for injured regular Justin Hill throughout the remainder of the season, Noren stormed to fifth in the opening encounter, followed by a seventh place finish in race two.

His combined 5-7 scorecard granted him seventh overall, however his score of 30 points saw him tied for fifth in the classification.

“I had an awesome start with the JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing crew in finishing seventh overall,” said Noren. “Having the support system of everyone around me this weekend was more helpful than I can explain. I couldn’t ask for a better bike in the Suzuki RM-Z450. I’m excited for the remainder of the season.”

Team manager Jeremy Albrecht added: “This was the weekend that the team needed. Freddie and the team did a great job leading into Southwick to prepare for the race. It was a great combined effort. Noren’s excitement transferred over to the team and proved that he is, in fact, ‘Fast Freddie’ and I think he can do even better at RedBud.”

Starting the season out as a privateer on Honda machinery, Noren is ranked 11th in the championship standings as the series heads to RedBud this weekend.
