2021 BMW S 1000 R Announced

2021 BMW S 1000 R

BMW has announced its virtually all-new 2021 BMW S 1000 R, which features a completely redesigned chassis and visual approach — farewell, bug-eye headlights. The Bavarian super-naked sportbike is powered by a 999cc in-line four-cylinder engine derived from the S 1000 RR superbike, claiming to produce 165 horsepower at 11,000 rpm. For more information about the new 2021 BMW S 1000 R, see the official press release below.

From Press Release:

“With our new S 1000 R, we have tried to preserve the strengths of its predecessor and to take into account the potentials known to us from press and customer feedback in the new S 1000 R. The team also made perfect use of the benefits provided by the new architecture”

Ralf Mölleken, Project Manager Complete Vehicle

Emotional roadster look combined with supersports riding dynamics – that’s what the new BMW S 1000 R is all about. Derived directly from the supersports S 1000 RR in the key areas engine and chassis, the dynamic roadster offers the same innovative technology. The close kinship to the “RR” can be seen from every angle. With its reduction to the essentials, the new S 1000 R offers unprecedented dynamic response. Thanks to its acceleration-optimised 121 kW (165 hp) peak output combined with the unrivalled low weight of 199 kg (DIN) as well as ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), full-scale LED lighting and much more as standard, the new S 1000 R once once again sets the benchmark in the dynamic roadster segment.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

Newly developed, 5 kg lighter drive based on the S 1000 RR with adapted gear ratios, optimised mid-range power and engine drag torque control (MSR) as optional extras.
The in-line four-cylinder is based on the engine of the S 1000 RR and generates 121 kW (165 hp) at 11 000 rpm. The maximum torque of 114 Nm is available at 9 250 rpm. The engine speed range was made even wider, fuller and more harmonious in terms of achieving even more improved rideability thanks to a particularly linear torque curve. In order to reduce the noise and fuel consumption levels as well as the engine speed level, especially at cruising speeds on country roads, the 4th, 5th and 6th gears now have longer gear ratios. In addition to a smoother, self-reinforcing anti-hopping clutch, the new S 1000 R is equipped with engine drag torque control (MSR) for the first time as an optional extra. The engine drag torque control prevents the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abrupt throttling or downshifting thanks to being electronically controlled.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

Completely new, lighter chassis based on the S 1000 RR with Flex Frame, Full Floater Pro kinematics, underslung swingarm and optimised ergonomics.
The chassis was also subjected to significant weight reduction, just like the entire motorcycle. The frame and swingarm are based on the S 1000 RR and have been made considerably lighter in than their predecessor. At the same time, the engine in the so-called Flex Frame takes on a much greater supporting function than before. The new frame offers further benefits due to its very narrow design. This considerably reduces the motorcycle’s width in the area of the knee contact area, thereby offering a more relaxed riding position with even more freedom of movement. An adjustable handlebar clamp enables the rider to make ergonomic adaptations. Two positions are already available as standard: 0 mm / +10 mm towards the front. In addition, 10 mm handlebar riser mounts are offered as an option, which can also be turned in the direction of travel by 0 mm / +10 mm.

The underslung swingarm has been taken over from the S 1000 RR and the spring strut with Full Floater Pro kinematics is now located significantly further away from the swing axis and the engine. This prevents the engine from heating up due to waste heat and ensures even more stable temperature behaviour and even more constant damping response. In combination with the swingarm, which has its roots in motorsports, this results in more tyre grip and lower tyre wear.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

Three riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro as standard. Optional equipment “Riding Modes Pro” with riding mode “Dynamic Pro”, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), engine drag torque control (MSR, “Engine Brake” and “Power Wheelie”.
The new S 1000 R is equipped as standard with Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS Pro with banking angle optimization and the three riding modes “Rain”, “Road” and “Dynamic”. The fully configurable “Dynamic Pro” mode is also available with a particularly wide range of setting options as part of the “Riding Modes Pro” option. With “Riding Modes Pro”, the new S 1000 R also features the “Engine Brake” function in conjunction with the engine drag torque control (MSR) and the “Power Wheelie” function. As part of the “Riding Modes Pro” option, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) additionally supports the rider during emergency braking maneuvers.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

Multifunctional instrument cluster with 6.5-inch TFT screen for excellent readability and maximum range of information.
The new S 1000 R’s instrument cluster was also taken over from the S 1000 RR. Special emphasis was placed on the best possible readability in addition to an extended range of functions and information. The screen was therefore designed to be large for good readability and optimum information display even under difficult lighting conditions. The rider can choose between customised screen displays for various purposes. The Pure Ride Screen, for example, provides all the necessary information for normal road riding, while a further Core Screen shows displays for banking angle, deceleration and traction control. A bluetooth smartphone interface which allows app-based arrow navigation is already included as standard. The TFT display is operated comfortably from the handlebars using the multi-controller. The optional M package provides a third Core Screen with bar display and lap timer.

New LED headlamp and powerful LED light units as standard. Headlight Pro with adaptive turning light and iconic light guides with daytime running light function as an optional extra ex works.
The lighting units of the new S 1000 R are based on state-of-the-art LED technology. These include the new, striking LED main headlamp with optimised low beam and high beam light. The newly designed turn indicator and rear lights also make use of LED technology. The rear turn indicators have been adopted from the S 1000 RR and feature an integrated tail/brake light function. The front turn indicators are “hidden” in the fork area. Enhanced safety when riding at night is ensured by the adaptive turning light which is a component of Headlight Pro as an ex works option. In this case, further LED modules are added. The rider benefits from improved road illumination when cornering to make riding at night even safer.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

New, even more dynamic design in an attractive basic colour and two exclusive style variants.
In its latest edition, the S 1000 R also clearly borrows from its supersports counterpart, the S 1000 RR, but placing the emphasis on its character as a dynamic roadster. To a greater extent than previously, the “tail up – nose down” look gives the S 1000 R an eye-catchingly dynamic visual impact with its new body elements. The colour concept also highlights the sporty, dynamic appearance of the new S 1000 R. In addition to the basic colour Racingred non-metallic, the options Style Sport and the M package with additional product content are available.

2021 BMW S 1000 R

The highlights of the new BMW S 1000 R:

2021 BMW G 310 R Announced

2021 BMW G 310 R

The 2021 BMW G 310 R has been announced with a few notable changes to BMW’s entry-level roadster. For the 2021 model year, the G 310 R will feature a throttle-by-wire, a slipper clutch, a new LED headlight and indicators, adjustable levers and a mild aesthetic refresh. MSRP has not been revealed yet. See the official press release below for more information.

From Press Release:

With its powerful, dynamic single-cylinder, the appearance in 2015 of the BMW G 310 R opened up the world of BMW Motorrad’s Dynamic Roadster for the capacity segment under 500 cm3. Quick and agile in the city, confident and powerful on the open road – as a result, the lively, purposeful Dynamic Roadster delighted many customers all over the world, especially newcomers. In order to sustain this going forward, BMW Motorrad has made the BMW G 310 R fit for the future and afforded it a range of enhancements.

2021 BMW G 310 R

Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with automatic idle boost, electromotive throttle controller and self-boosting anti-hopping clutch.

The heart of the new BMW G 310 R is still the reliable 313 cm3 liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, two overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection. The cylinder inclination to the rear and the cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear remain the design characteristics. This

arrangement follows the logic of optimal combustion air ducting and results in a particularly compact vehicle architecture. With an output of 25 kW (34 HP) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm, the single-cylinder engine of the new BMW G 310 R is the ideal partner for dynamic Roadster pleasure, including in the current EU 5 homologation.

For use in the new BMW G 310 R, the engine has been equipped with a so-called “electronic throttle grip” (electromotive throttle controller) and now offers an even more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increase when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also new. It reduces engine drag torque and provides a significant increase in driving safety – particularly during braking manoeuvres involving simultaneous downshifting. It also offers significantly reduced operating forces at the clutch lever.

New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators – seeing and being seen optimally.

Whereas the BMW G 310 R was already equipped with brake lights in LED technology, the new BMW G 310 R now has a full-LED headlight for even better visibility at night and LED flashing turn indicators for increased visibility in traffic. The new LED headlight ensures particularly bright and homogeneous illumination of the road. The three light functions high beam, low beam and – depending on the country – daytime driving light can be conveniently operated using the left handlebar controls.

2021 BMW G 310 R

Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.

Both, the clutch lever and the handbrake lever are now adjustable in four stages. It thus now provides ergonomic benefits – particularly for people with small hands. Stage 3 of the brake lever adjustment corresponds to the grip width until now. In the 1st position the brake lever is 6 mm closer to the handlebar.

2021 BMW G 310 R

Softly reimagined design with two attractive base colours and the exclusive “Sport” style option.

Dynamics and agility are also reflected in the design of the new BMW G 310 R. Here the visual similarity to sporty family members like the BMW S 1000 R is unmistakeable. This is also reflected in the colour scheme of the Dynamic Roadster. What all three colour options of the BMW G 310 R have in common are the engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and coolant pump as well as footrest plate and rear grab handle, now painted in Titanium Grey Metallic.

Besides the base colour, Cosmic Black, and accentuated masculine touch, another base colour option, Polar White, is now available, which together with blue painted accents represents the traditional BMW corporate colours in a fresh, dynamic way. In Sport style with the base colour, Limestone Metallic, eye-catching red “R” graphic on the fairing side panels and red frame and wheels, the new BMW G 310 R confidently reveals its sporty side.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 | First Look Review

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review
The 2021 Triumph Trident 660 shown in “Silver Ice & Diablo Red” (left) and “Crystal White” (right).

The 2021 Triumph Trident 660 has finally been unveiled, and Triumph hopes that its triple-cylinder-powered roadster has what it takes to shake up the twin-cylinder dominated middleweight class. Aggressively priced at $7,995 and equipped with ABS, switchable traction control and selectable ride modes, the British marque is bringing the fight to its competition.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

Pitted against the likes of the Suzuki SV650, Yamaha MT-07 / XSR 700, Kawasaki Z650 and Honda CBR650R, the Trident 660 has its work cut out for it. However, the Triumph offers plenty of up-spec componentry and features for a few hundred dollars above most of its competition — and significantly less than the Honda.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Seat Height

The Trident moniker is an essential piece of history for Triumph, as it was the brand’s first triple-cylinder powered machine, launched in 1968. A full-factory racing Trident known as “Slipper Sam” also claimed five consecutive Isle of Mann Production TT wins from 1972 to 1975. In the early 1990s, the Trident name was revisited with the Trident 750 and 900 roadsters.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

Triumph began teasing the 2021 Trident 660 earlier this year when it revealed a design prototype at the London Design Museum, which displayed the new roadster’s rough concept. Shortly after, Triumph broke tradition and officially released images of the new Trident during its final testing stages. Details have been scarce until now.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review
2021 Triumph Trident 660 shown in “Matt Jet Black & Silver Ice”

Beginning with its Euro 5 compliant powerplant, the 2021 Trident is powered by a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 660cc inline-triple cylinder engine making a claimed 79.9 horsepower at 10,250 rpm and 47 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm. Notably, the Trident’s engine is said to provide 90-percent of its peak torque at an impressively low 3,600 rpm. Triumph engineers stated that low end and midrange power is prioritized in its design and it will also offer top-end power that middleweight parallel and V-twin engines are not known for. A sleek underslung 3-into-1-exhaust system is almost surely going to produce the triple-cylinder howl that Triumph fans adore.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

If the engine cases and bolt patterns look familiar, that’s because the engine is an evolution of what was used in the 2013-2016 Triumph Street Triple 675. This refined engine features 67 new components and significant design changes. Engineers narrowed the 74mm bore and lengthened the 51.1mm stroke, resulting in decreased displacement and paving the way for a new crankshaft, piston design and cam profiles. Additionally, an all-new intake and exhaust system was needed for the Trident’s application.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Horsepower

The 6-speed gearbox is updated with new internal gear and final drive ratios and a redesigned slip-assist clutch that is said to offer a light clutch pull for urban riding. The lever itself is non-adjustable. The Trident can be fitted with an optional factory up/down quickshifter, which isn’t offered by its direct competition.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Valve Service

Thanks to the modern throttle-by-wire, the Trident 660 boasts two preset ride modes, Road and Rain, which alter throttle response and rider aid intervention. Traction control can be disabled, while ABS cannot, per Euro 5 standards. To help keep the MSRP down, the Trident does not use an IMU, but Triumph staff says that its rider aids are tested at full-lean, suggesting that its system may not be as heavy-handed with intervention.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

A round TFT/LCD instrument panel offers an uncluttered design. The optional Bluetooth module provides modern amenities such as turn-by-turn navigation, GoPro control, phone, and music control, all accessed from the switchgear.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

Stylistically, the Trident strikes a careful balance between its heritage and modern lineups. Triumph is flexing its fit-and-finish prowess with numerous embossed components and LED lighting all around. Four liveries are available: Crystal White, Matt Jet Black & Matt Silver Ice, Sapphire Black and Silver Ice & Diablo Red.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Middleweight Motorcycle

An all-new tubular steel chassis and cast aluminum swingarm have typical roadster figures, with a 55.2-inch wheelbase and 24.6-degree rake. The standout number is the accommodating 31.7-inch seat height, which should appeal to a broad range of rider sizes. The 3.7-gallon fuel tank features knee cutouts, which are a classic styling cue from the Triumph playbook but also help keep the overall package slim. The claimed weight is listed as 417 pounds, which is noticeably heavier than the MT-07 and Z650.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Specs

Suspension duties are handled by a non-adjustable 41mm inverted Showa fork and Showa shock featuring spring-preload adjustment only. Compared to the traditional fork found on most bikes in this class, the inverted fork is a step up, although costs were still saved with the lack of adjustment.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 First Look Review

Class-appropriate 2-piston floating Nissin calipers work with 310mm floating rotors, and a single-piston Nissin caliper grabs onto a 255mm disc.

2021 Triumph Trident 660 Cost

High-quality Michelin Road 5 120/70 and 180/55 rubber is mounted on cast aluminum 17-inch wheels. Michelin Road 5 tires are a significant improvement when compared to the OEM rubber available in this class.

We can’t wait to throw a leg over the 2021 Triumph Trident, but until we do, feast your eyes on the images below.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 | First Look Review

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

The Yamaha MT-09 has been a naked-bike segment favorite ever since it first came on the scene in 2014. With its affordable MSRP and nothing-short-of-brilliant CP3 triple-cylinder engine, it quickly received well-deserved attention. This year, the virtually all-new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 comes out swinging with a heavily updated engine, an all-new chassis, less weight, state of the art electronics and an aesthetic overhaul.  Best yet, all of those features will only cost us $400 above last year’s price, with the new bike’s MSRP at $9,399.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

Kicking up the power quotient is the revised 890cc CP3 triple-cylinder engine (growing from 847cc) featuring a claimed 117 horsepower and 69 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping score, that’s five extra ponies and two more lb-ft of torque, and this new engine is Euro 5 compliant — kudos, Yamaha. Interestingly, the 78mm bore remains, while the stroke has increased to 62.1mm from 59.1mm. Also, the engine is reported to have shed four pounds despite its displacement bump.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

To that end, the 890cc engine now boasts new pistons, connecting rods, camshafts and crankcases. Notably, the MT-09 now has a ride-by-wire throttle, which has opened many technological doors and, hopefully, improved the snatchy throttle response that existed in prior generations. Also, a new slip-assist clutch is included that is said to reduce effort at the lever. Lastly, an up/down quickshifter is standard.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review
An up/down quickshifter is standard.

One of the biggest highlights this year is a rider aid package derived from the Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike. The MT-09 now features a 6-axis IMU providing adjustable cornering ABS, lean-angle-detecting traction control, slide control and wheelie control.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

In addition, a 3.5-inch full-color TFT display will allow riders to choose between three riding modes, 1, 2 and M (customizable). That’s a notable improvement over the LCD instrument panel.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

The all-new Deltabox frame, subframe and swingarm are all made out of cast aluminum and feature slightly altered geometry. According to Yamaha, longitudinal and lateral rigidity in the frame is increased by a whopping 50 percent to improve handling characteristics. Claimed curb weight is a nod-worthy 417 pounds, down eight pounds compared to the outgoing model.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

The suspension is still handled by a fully adjustable 41mm KYB fork and an updated KYB shock with spring preload and rebound damping adjustment only. While plush and comfortable for street use, the MT-09’s suspension could become bouncy when pushed. Yamaha acknowledges this in the announcement, stating that the bike’s new suspension setup matches the more rigid frame and reduces the suspension’s tendency to pitch.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

Also encouraging improved handling are lighter 10-spoke spin-forged aluminum wheels, with a claimed 11-percent weight decrease in the rear wheel. Less rotating mass always translates to quicker steering.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First cost

Braking duties are taken up by the same setup as last year, with radially mounted Nissin 4-piston calipers and dual 298mm floating discs up front.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

Visually, the MT-09 received quite an overhaul, with all-new bodywork and a redesigned single LED headlight being the most apparent changes.

2021 Yamaha MT-09 First Look Review

There are plenty of other changes that we’re excited about, and can’t wait to put the new Yamaha MT-09 through its paces before it arrives in dealers in January 2021.

Americade 2021 Announced

Americade 2021 Announced

Good news from the Americade camp, American 2021 has been announced and is set to take place in the Lake George area on June 7-12, 2021. For more information, please read the official statement below.

From Press Release:

Organizers of Americade are already planning an Americade 2021, and are optimistic that the 38th annual motorcycle rally will be held in the Lake George area on June 7-12, 2021.

“Interest in Americade 2021 is very high because so many 2020 events were canceled, and we are expecting a huge Americade 2021,” said Christian Dutcher, Americade’s director. “Naturally, COVID-19 may have a say in this, and if we need to push Americade later, then we would postpone until later in the year.”

2020’s postponement from June to July, though ultimately canceled, compelled organizers to carefully consider all safety measures put in place by state and federal health agencies while still offering attendees a true Americade experience. Those precautions are still at the forefront of planning for 2021.

“We created a touch-less Americade 2020, which would have made the event a model for how to run a large event during COVID-19,” said Dutcher. “We plan on doing the same in 2021 if needed. It’s simply a safer way to run an event.”

For nearly four decades, Americade has offered not only the best guided and unguided rides in the Northeast, but also the most factory demos of any motorcycle event in the U.S. as well as AMERICADEXPO with the largest concentration of motorcycle vendors in a single location at one time. Lake George area businesses have supported Americade week and consider it to be the kickoff to their summer season.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced: Engine and Color Updates

The full 2021 BMW R nineT range has been announced by BMW Motorrad, which includes the R nineT, R nineT Pure, R nineT Scrambler, and R nineT Urban G/S. Several new colorways are available for each model, and Euro 5 related mechanical updates to the boxer-twin engine come in the form of new cylinder heads. BMW claims that these changes improve the torque curve across the rev-range, especially between 4000 and 6000 rpm. For more information, see the press release below.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced

Extended range of standard features, fine-tuning of the design and even more pulling power. The new BMW R nineT models – R nineT, R nineT Pure, R nineT Scrambler and R nineT Urban G/S.

When BMW Motorrad presented the R nineT in 2013, it was more than just a roadster modelled on a classic archetype: from the very outset it combined classic motorcycle design and modern technology with excellent craftsmanship and a wide range of customisation options. Just a short time later, the R nineT found attractive derivatives in the BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience: the R nineT Urban G/S as an enduro with the genes of the legendary R 80 G/S of 1980, the R nineT Scrambler as a homage to this distinctive motorcycle genre for those who love a purist, reduced and non-conformist style, and the R nineT Pure as a roadster reduced to the bare essentials. For the upcoming 2021 season, BMW Motorrad has now sustainably honed the R nineT family with some technical modifications, as well as significantly extending the range of standard and optional equipment.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced

Boxer engine according to EU-5 requirements with new cylinder heads, even greater torque and optimised design.

For use in the new R nineT models, the boxer engine has undergone both technical and visual fine-tuning and is now designed to meet the requirements of the EU-5 pollutant class. Its peak power output is now 80 kW (109 hp) at 7250 rpm (previously 81 kW (110 hp) at 7750 rpm), while the maximum torque is still 116 Nm at 6000 rpm. Newly designed cylinder heads provide a more harmonious transition from the outer to the inner cooling fins, and newly designed throttle valve parts and cylinder head covers now give the bike even greater aesthetic appeal.

Inside the cylinder heads there is a new turbulence system which swirls the mixture to ensure even better and cleaner combustion and increased torque. Thanks to an even more full-bodied power and torque curve – especially in the range between 4000 and 6000 rpm – pulling power levels are now tangibly better than those of the predecessor.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced

ABS Pro including DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) and a new suspension strut with travel-dependent damping (WAD) now come as standard, as do the “Rain” and “Road” riding modes.

Even in the standard version, the new R nineT models now feature ABS Pro in combination with DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) for increased safety when braking – at banking angles as well as in difficult situations. Standard features also include a new shock absorber with travel-dependent damping (WAD), providing enhanced suspension comfort and convenient adjustment of the spring preload via a hand wheel. “Rain” and “Road” riding modes are now included as standard, too.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced

Classic circular instrument with new dial, LED lighting units and USB charging socket as standard.

The standard trim in the R nineT models includes a circular instrument with a newly designed dial featuring the BMW logo as well as indicator lights that are “invisible” when not illuminated. Likewise as standard, the new R nineT models now have a headlamp and white indicator lights in LED technology. The extended range of standard equipment in the new R nineT models is supplemented with a USB charging socket.

2021 BMW R nineT Range Announced

A wealth of new options – from innovative technology to individual design and new colour schemes.

BMW Motorrad has significantly advanced the new R nineT models – both technically and visually. Riding Modes Pro with the additional modes “Dyna” for the R nineT and R nineT Pure and “Dirt” for the R nineT Scrambler and R nineT Urban G/S are now available as new individual options, as are DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) and engine drag torque control (MSR). Another new option is the Comfort Package, comprising Riding Modes Pro, cruise control and heated handlebar grips. The turning light and the rear silencer design option are likewise new to the range of individual optional extras.

Meanwhile the traditional “Option 719” offers particularly exclusive and high-quality options for customisation of the R nineT to suit the owner’s personal taste. This exclusive range of parts now includes such items as various wheels, milled parts packages and – from the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories range – a rear conversion with short rear end and number plate holder behind the rear wheel, as well as a rear end in tracker style (Tracker rear end). The enhancements for the R nineT model family are rounded off with new standard and optional paint finishes. The “Edition 40 Years GS” of the R nineT Urban G/S is especially significant here. Available as a limited edition only, this unique model comes in a colour scheme reminiscent of the legendary R 100 GS to mark the 40th anniversary of the BMW Motorrad GS family.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic Announced

BMW Motorrad has announced its latest addition to the BMW R 18 line, the BMW R 18 Classic. The Classic model expands on the R 18 cruiser, incorporating several touring-oriented additions such as a large windscreen, passenger seat, saddlebags, additional LED headlights, and a significantly smaller 16-inch front wheel. For more information, read the press release below.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

From Press Release:

The new BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18: nostalgic touring and supreme cruising with historic roots.

Following the premiere of the new BMW R 18, BMW Motorrad now presents the second member of its new model series for the cruiser segment: the R 18 Classic. The new BMW R 18 Classic is a nostalgic touring bike that echoes the beginnings of the great touring cruiser models. While the R 18 is very purist in style, the R 18 Classic features a large windscreen, passenger seat, saddle bags, additional LED headlights and 16-inch front wheel.

The new BMW R 18 Classic and the BMW R 18 stand firmly in the tradition of historic BMW motorcycles. They borrow from famous models such as the BMW R 5 both technologically and visually, shifting the focus back onto the motorcycle essentials: purist, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the epicentre of riding pleasure, combined with “good vibrations”. What is more, classic design is merged in the R 18 Classic and R 18 with clear-cut yet contemporary technology to create a fascinating overall concept – offering a riding experience that is as cultivated as it is emotional.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

The most powerful BMW boxer engine of all time with full torque.

The centrepiece of the new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 is a completely newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine – the “Big Boxer”. Both its impressive appearance and its technology reflect a continuation of the traditional air-cooled boxer engines that have offered an inspiring riding experience for more than seven decades, ever since BMW Motorrad began production in 1923. The most powerful two-cylinder boxer engine ever used in motorcycle series production has a displacement of 1 802 cc. The peak output is 67 kW (91 hp) at 4 750 rpm. From 2,000 to 4,000 rpm, over 150 Nm of torque is available at all times, and this elemental pulling power is combined with a full, sonorous sound.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

Double-loop steel tube frame and rear swinging arm with enclosed axle drive in rigid-frame look.

The centrepiece of the suspension in the new R 18 Classic is a double-loop steel tube frame. Its design perpetuates the longstanding BMW Motorrad tradition of this frame type. Outstanding manufacturing quality and a meticulous attention to detail is also evident in barely perceptible features such as the welded joints between the steel tubes and the cast or forged parts. Like the legendary BMW R 5, the rear swinging arm – sporting a comparable design – surrounds the rear axle transmission in authentic style by means of bolted connections.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

Telescopic fork with fork sleeves, cantilever suspension strut, wire-spoked wheels and disc brakes.

The suspension elements of the new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 deliberately dispense with electronic adjustment options. Instead, a telescopic fork and a directly mounted central suspension strut with travel-dependent damping and adjustable spring preload ensure superior wheel control and attractive suspension comfort. As in the legendary BMW R 5, the tubes of the telescopic fork are encased in fork sleeves. The fork tube diameter is 49 mm, while the suspension travel is 120 mm at the front and 90 mm at the rear. The new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 are decelerated by a twin disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear in conjunction with four-piston fixed calipers. Meanwhile the wire-spoked wheels ensure a supremely stylish appearance.

Harmonious ergonomics for optimum vehicle control.

In keeping with the BMW Motorrad philosophy, the new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 feature a laid-back positioning of the footrests – so-called “mid-mounted footpegs”. This classic position behind the cylinders is not only typical of BMW, it also enables a relaxed and active riding position for optimum vehicle control.

Three riding modes along with ASC and MSR for a high degree of riding pleasure and safety as standard. Reverse assist and Hillstart Control as ex works options

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

The new R 18 Classic and R 18 also offer the three standard riding modes “Rain”, “Roll” and “Rock” – unusual in this segment – so as to be able to adapt to individual rider preferences. The standard trim also includes ASC (Automatic Stability Control, disengageable), which ensures a high level of riding safety. In addition, the new R 18 Classic and R 18 are equipped as standard with engine drag torque control (MSR). Among other options, a reverse assist makes manoeuvring convenient, while the Hill Start Control function facilitates uphill starts.

The new R 18 Classic and R 18: iconic style newly showcased, featuring a rigid-frame look, modern technology and authentic materials.

The R 18 Classic and R 18 masterfully transpose the iconic style of bygone times to the present day, retaining a purist design in numerous details that is mainly influenced by classics such as the BMW R 5. It is no coincidence that functional and stylistic elements such as the double-loop frame, the pear-drop tank, the open-running universal shaft and the double-lined paintwork (ex works option) are reminiscent of the legendary boxer dating back to 1936. The classic bodywork features of the R 18 Classic and R 18 are also made of metal – as befits an authentic classic. The suspension is likewise aptly reminiscent of the legendary R 5. Together with the double-sided swinging arm and a cantilever suspension strut, the rigid-frame concept of the R 5 is perfectly transported into the modern age in visual terms.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

The R 18 Classic First Edition and R 18 First Edition:
exclusive look in paint and chrome.

The new R 18 will be offered worldwide as an exclusive R 18 Classic First Edition and R 18 First Edition right from launch, with a standard model reserved additionally for certain markets. It combines the R 18 look with exclusive equipment features in a classic black finish with white double-lined paintwork. Other highlights include numerous chrome surfaces, a seat badge and a “First Edition” chrome clasp on the side covers.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

Conversion-friendly architecture as a prerequisite for straightforward customising and optimum individualisation.

More so than virtually any other motorcycle, the new R 18 Classic and R 18 offer a highly conversion-friendly architecture – a focus even in the early design phases of the basic vehicle layout. As a result it is fitted with an easily removable rear frame and a simple-to-dismantle painted part set. Carefully conceived interface points for the hydraulic lines of the brake, clutch and cable harness likewise allow entirely problem-free installation of higher or lower handlebars in conjunction with matching hydraulic lines and cable harnesses. In addition, the visible valve covers (cylinder head covers) and the belt cover (engine housing cover) are designed in such a way that they are located outside the oil chamber, making them very easy to change.

2021 BMW R 18 Classic

Customising parts and Roland Sands design collections “Machined” and “2-Tone Black” for the new R 18 Classic and R 18.

The BMW Motorrad equipment range offers a maximum selection of individualisation options with which to adapt the R 18 Classic and R 18 to personal taste and preferences. The wide range of different parts available from the programme of Original BMW Motorrad Accessories enables individual conversions that significantly alter the character of the R 18 Classic and R 18. For the market launch of the new R 18 Classic and R 18, two different design collections of milled aluminium parts are available, created in collaboration with Roland Sands Design: “Machined” and “2-Tone-Black”.

Co-branding with famous brands: Mustang seats and
Vance & Hines exhaust systems “Made in USA”.

For the accessories and customising programme of the new R 18, BMW Motorrad is collaborating not just with Roland Sands Design but also several well-known suppliers, including US manufacturer Mustang Seat in order to be able to offer different versions of high-quality hand-made seats. Meanwhile the customising potential for the exhaust systems in cooperation with Vance & Hines is no less creative.

The highlights of the new BMW R 18 Classic.

  • Windshield (removable).
  • Saddle bags (removable).
  • Passenger seat (removable).

2021 BMW R 1250 RT Announced: Tech and Aesthetic Updates

BMW has announced several updates to its boxer-twin powered touring machine, the 2021 BMW R 1250 RT. An aesthetic refresh is the most apparent change, while several features that were once options are now standard on the 2021 R 1250 RT. Check out the press release below for more information.

From Press Release:

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

“We have given the R 1250 RT a new look, a comprehensive increase in standard equipment and numerous technical upgrades to achieve a whole new riding experience. As a dynamic tourer with the incomparable BMW ShiftCam engine, it also has the perfect power unit with impressive power across the entire speed range”
Harald Spagl, Project Manager

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

The new BMW R 1250 RT: The benchmark among dynamic tourers is even more sophisticated and innovative for maximum motorcycle enjoyment on extended journeys.

For more than four decades, the BMW Motorrad abbreviation “RT” has been synonymous in the world of dynamic touring motorcycles, combining comfort on long journeys with dynamic riding pleasure on country roads. More than that: a BMW RT has always sets the benchmark in this class. To ensure that this continues to be the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has made extensive changes and innovations to the new R 1250 RT – for even greater riding pleasure and touring enjoyment at the very highest level. As before, the legendary 2-cylinder boxer engine ensures comfortable travel and dynamic propulsion. It still has an engine capacity of 1 254 cc and delivers 100 kW (136 hp) in the current EU5 registration, too. Thanks to BMW ShiftCam technology for varying valve timing and valve lift on the intake side, it offers superior power across the entire speed range, extremely smooth running and refinement as well as outstanding fuel consumption and emission values.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and new “Eco” riding mode as standard. Riding Modes Pro with riding mode preselection and engine drag torque control (MSR) as options.

The standard Dynamic Traction Control DTC ensures a high level of riding safety due to excellent traction, while the new standard “Eco” riding mode helps the rider achieve the best possible fuel efficiency.

The new R 1250 RT Adventure can be fitted with the “Pro Riding Modes” as an ex works option. Another new component of Riding Modes Pro is the engine drag torque control (MSR): this can be used to safely avoid unstable riding conditions that can occur during coasting or downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

New BMW Full Integral ABS Pro as standard.

In its latest edition, the R 1250 RT is equipped as standard with the new BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro. This is a braking system in which both the hand and foot brake levers are used to apply the front and rear brakes simultaneously. Combined with the qualities of ABS Pro with banking angle optimisation and dynamic brake force distribution, Full Integral ABS Pro is the perfect braking system for a touring bike such as the R 1250 RT.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

New full LED headlamp with turning light and new light functions as ex works options.

The new standard full LED headlamp already illuminates the road with unrivalled brightness and clarity. The new headlamp with swivel function goes one step further: with the “Adaptive Turning Light” option, the dipped beam of the standard full LED headlamp turns into the bend according to the banking position. In this way, the bend is almost fully illuminated because the light moves to where the motorcycle is heading. Thanks to new light functions, the riding experience on the new R 1250 RT is even more intense – and there are practical benefits, too. For example, the “Welcome” function, the “Goodbye” function for taking leave and the “Follow me home” function for guidance purposes will be available as optional extras in future.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) as standard. Active Cruise Control (ACC) – cruise control with integrated distance control for relaxed touring as an ex works option.

In connection with the standard Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) , “dynamic” means that the preselected speed is kept at a constant level when riding downhill. If the braking effect of the engine is not sufficient for this, the fully integral brake is automatically activated so as to maintain the desired riding speed. Active Cruise Control (ACC), available as an optional extra, goes one step further. Thanks to radar sensor technology, it enables relaxed gliding with distance control – and there is no need for the rider to adapt road speed to the vehicle in front.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

New 10.25” TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation for convenient route planning and extensive connectivity as standard.

The new R 1250 RT is fitted with a 10.25-inch TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation and connectivity. Its excellent readability, clear menu navigation and highly integrated operating concept put the new R 1250 RT at the top of the range of serial production motorcycles. For the first time on a motorcycle, the new 10.25-inch colour screen makes it possible to display a navigation map in the instrument cluster, so no additional display is needed.

Along with the introduction of standard connectivity and the navigation map shown on the screen, the new “Comfort telephony with extended smartphone connection” option is available. A smartphone can be securely accommodated in a storage compartment that is protected from splash water and ventilated by an electric fan, and its battery can be kept ready for use inductively or via USB connection. With the Audio System 2.0, the new R 1250 RT offers an even more intense sound experience than its predecessor.

2021 BMW R 1250 RT

The new R 1250 RT: enhanced travel capability and dynamic performance thanks to new fairing. Exclusive touring character in an attractive basic paint finish and refined style variants.

Thanks to a newly developed front fairing, the new R 1250 RT now not only looks fresher and more dynamic, it also has enhanced travel and touring qualities thanks to additional aerodynamic advancements. Not only does the new front fairing enclose the new full LED headlamps, for example, but the upper section of the fairing is now reduced in height, too. This results in a wider field of vision for the rider, while at the same time making the new R 1250 RT appear lighter and more dynamic. In addition to the attractive basic version in Alpine White 3, the new R 1250 RT is also available in the refined Style variants “Elegance”, “Sport” and “Option 719”.

The highlights of the new BMW R 1250 RT:

• Authentic boxer engine with BMW ShiftCam Technology for variation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side.

• Powerful response across the entire engine speed range, exemplary fuel consumption, emission levels, running smoothness and refinement.

• Output and torque: 100 kW (136 hp) at 7 750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6 250 rpm.

• Knock sensor system for optimised travel suitability.

• New BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro as standard.

• Three riding modes as standard.

• New “Eco” riding mode for particularly economical riding as standard.

• Riding Modes Pro with additional riding mode “Dynamic” and new engine drag torque control (MSR) as an ex works option.

• Dynamic Traction Control DTC as standard

Ducati V4 Granturismo Engine Revealed: No Desmodromic Valves

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

Ducati has revealed official technical information about its new 1,158cc V4 Granturismo engine that will power the 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4. The big news for the V4 Granturismo powerplant is that it boasts a record-breaking 37,282.3-mile (60,000 kilometer) valve service interval, thanks to a new spring valve return system.

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

Yes, you read that right. The V4 Granturismo will not use a desmodromic valvetrain. Before metallurgy advancements in the 1950s, desmodromic valve systems held an advantage over spring valve return configurations when applied to engines destined for continuous high-rpm use. In the early days of racing, springs of that era could not withstand the abuse of sustained high-rpm, resulting in “valve float,” as well as catastrophic failure.

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

Ducati’s new powerplant uses much of what was learned from the Ducati Panigale and Streetfighter V4 engine development, sharing aspects like the “Twin Pulse” firing order. However, significant differences exist between them.

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

To begin with, the displacement has grown 55cc, thanks to a larger bore and stroke of 83 x 53.5 mm. However, the 14:1 compression ratio found on the Panigale and Streetfighter V4 is retained. Claimed horsepower has risen 12 points to 170 at 10,500 rpm, while peak torque has decreased roughly 2.8 points to 92.2 lb-ft at 8,750 rpm. The new engine platform is homologated for Euro 5 emissions.

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

The V4 Granturismo engine will also employ the same counter-rotating crankshaft design found in the Panigale V4, Streetfighter V4, and Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP race bikes. This design feature counteracts the negative gyroscopic effect that a motorcycle’s forward-rotating wheels have on a bike’s agility, which should enable the 2021 Ducati Multistrada to handle and transition from side-to-side better than its predecessor.

Ducati 1158cc V4 Granturismo Engine

The V4 Granturismo is said to have a compact, lightweight design that will deliver a mix of high-performance aspects and torque-rich characteristics, making it suitable for Adventure Touring. Compared to the Testastretta V-twin engine found in the outgoing Multistrada, the V4 Granturismo is 3.35–inches shorter, 3.7-inches lower and only 0.79-inch wider. Hopefully, these svelte dimensions will contribute to narrower and lower chassis on the 2021 Multistrada that will accommodate a broader range of rider sizes. The engine’s total weight is said to be 147 pounds — 2.65 pounds lighter than the Testastretta V-twin.

Lastly, the new Multistrada engine will feature rear-cylinder-bank deactivation at idle to help rider comfort.
