BMW safaris take a cruisy turn

For more than two decades BMW Motored Australia has been operating road and off-road tours for customers, called safaris.

Last year the German company returned to cruisers after several years with the release of their massive R 18 boxer cruiser.

So now they have offered a special “cruisy” safari option called the ‘SoulFuel Escape’ on March 2-6, 2022.

The four-day, five-night tour will take in the scenic roads between Windsor on Sydney’s Northside to Port Macquarie. A very relaxed cruise, indeed!

Bookings go on sale this Thursday (27 January) at 9am AEDT. If it’s like their other safaris, it will sell out quickly with numbers limited to just 30.

The tour is not only open to R 18 customers, but also potential customers who can hire one, as well as owners of the R nineT models. Only 18 hire bikes are available.

It’s a great way to do a long test ride before you buy!

Robbie Maddison harbour

It’s not cheap, though, at $A3999 for the rider, $4899 with a pillion and R 18 hire costing $1000.

For that you get:

  • 5 Nights of “premium accommodation”;
  • Daily planned routes with lead and sweep riders;
  • Technical support;
  • Luggage transfer so you don’t need panniers;
  • A rider pack of “goodies”;
  • All breakfasts and dinners; and
  • Two custom experience activities.

We’re not sure what the last one means, but it should be good.

Bryan Staring clambering all over a sexy new Italian redhead….

Bryan Staring on the Panigale V4 R

After a fairly difficult couple of seasons Bryan Staring is hoping a sexy new Italian in his life might turn things around… Bryan will contest the 2022 Australian Superbike Championship with DesmoSport Ducati and is riding the machine for the first time this week at Phillip Island.

Bryan Staring

Since returning from Europe a few years ago I’ve really enjoyed racing in the ASBK and I’m excited to get on the DesmoSport Ducati Panigale V4 R. I spent a long time living in Italy, so to be able to partner with such a passionate, and proudly Italian brand really brings back a lot of great memories for me. It’s no secret that the bike is incredible to begin with and I’m confident that I can race for wins and the 2022 ASBK Championship. I love riding motorcycles, I love racing and I’m motivated more than ever with Ben and Troy’s support.

This interview we conducted with Bryan Staring back in late 2014 gives some great insights into Bryan and his experiences in Europe.

We believe Bryan and the Ducati could be a fearsome combination. Bryan and DesmoSport Ducati crew chief Ben Henry have actually lived together at various times during their lives as the two are close friends who both hail from Western Australia.  We recently conducted an extensive interview with Ben that you can find here.

In the meantime check out these first images of Bryan getting to know the DesmoSport Ducati at Phillip Island this week.

Motorcycling Australia (MA) CEO Peter Doyle

Motorcycling Australia is delighted to see the ASBK Championship back on track in 2022. 2020/21 champion Wayne Maxwell who has decided to retire thoughts of retirement for 2022 and go around again. Maxwell said his decision to compete in 2022 was more about making sure his team (McMartin Racing) was prepared for a consistent championship campaign.  We conducted an in-depth interview with Wayne around the announcement, and talking about ASBK in general. Here is a short snippet from the man himself here.

Wayne Maxwell

McMartin Racing is a very small privateer team, so we had to make sure we could get funding and support in order for the team to make a step forward and improve. Everyone else is going to step-up so we need to do the same. We were far from perfect in 2020 and 2021, but the ultimate goal is to win the championship three years in a row. I’m under no illusion that’s it’s going to be easier than the previous two, so if I can improve my fitness off the bike, it will help my consistency in the races.

Two-time British Superbike Champion Josh Brookes will also be turning some laps on the Boost Mobile Ducati V4 R motorcycles over the duration of the test.

Bryan Staring is already testing the DesmoSport Ducati this week at Phillip Island as part of an intensive and quick-fire adaption to the Panigale V4 R as he rode the machine for the first time on Monday.

North Brisbane Cup a success with Cyshan Weale victorious

Cyshan Weale wins North Brisbane Cup

Words and Images by Craig Mayne

After a hugely disrupted 2020, North Brisbane Junior Motorcycle Club had hoped for a more stable 2021. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus pandemic put pay to that, with all the proposed national events to be run at the club eventually being cancelled due to border closures and the like.

The North Brisbane Cup returned in 2022 after a two-year hiatus
The North Brisbane Cup returned in 2022 after a two-year hiatus

2022 is off to a flying start however, with the North Brisbane Cup run on Saturday and a strong contingent of riders travelling long distances to compete. There was also over $9,000 in prize money up for grabs, sweetening the deal and ensuring tough competition.

North Brisbane Cup 2022
North Brisbane Cup 2022

The event covered numerous classes from the demo or Division 1 riders all the way through to the Pro 450 class, containing a prestige field of some of Australia’s top dirt track riders. Some of the headliners were Jarred Brook, Cyshan Weale, Billy Van Eerde, Harrison Voight, Kye Thomson and Dale Borlase, just to name a few.

North Brisbane Cup 2022 – Kye Thomson, Jarred Brook, Brook Goulding

There were also good numbers of quad and dirt track sidecars entered, and thankfully only a few riders had to withdraw due to Covid quarantine restrictions.

Riders were lined up at the gate on the day at 6:30 am, keen to access the pit area and undertake preparations for the huge day to follow.

The North Brisbane Cup races under lights, with weather proving mixed

After the riders briefing there was a parade lap and minute’s silence for one of the North Brisbane quad riders – John Rice – who was a gentleman of the sport and tragically passed away of natural causes after a great day’s riding back in late November.

The weather in January in Brisbane can be quite variable and Saturday proved no different. Localised showers passed through off the ocean for most of the day. Thankfully these showers did not cause any stoppages to the program.

The North Brisbane Cup covers a host of classes and age groups

The track was set in a long-track format with a tight back dog-leg after turn 2 and before turn 3. This proved challenging for a lot of riders and limited opportunities for overtaking through this section. Later in the day in the main event everyone got to see how the dog leg could be used to a rider’s advantage.

After two laps of practice, there were three rounds of racing for all classes, showcasing some fantastic individual performances, before a final for each class. Points were awarded across the three races and the finals.

North Brisbane Cup 450 Open Start

The main event of the day was the Pro 450 cc North Brisbane Cup, and saw 20 laps of the North Brisbane circuit raced under lights with 12 of the countries best dirt track riders.

Cyshan Weale got a great start and led the race for the first few laps with Jarred Brook and Kye Thomson chasing him down. It was wheel to wheel racing with the lead changing between Weale and Brook multiple times with Thomson in hot pursuit.

Jarred Brook
Jarred Brook

Brook was then able to pass Weale and led into the final lap, but Weale pulled out all the stops and got back past in the back dogleg, to cross the line six hundredths of a second ahead of Brook. The energy around the track was electric, everyone had just witnessed an amazing spectacle.

Cyshan Weale has been chasing Jarred Brook for quite a few years, always with the intention of one day taking the win, and the North Brisbane Cup proved to be the day. Jarred was very gracious and immediately congratulated Cyshan on the win.

Cyshan Weale

With the 125 cc Cup class making a huge comeback in multiple genres of motorcycle racing the NB Cup was no different. A grid of 13 riders from many different disciplines faced of, including dirt track specialist Cyshan Weale, speedway rider Ryan Douglas for the Wolverhampton Wolves (UK), Blake Cobbin, as well as Redbull Rookie and Asia Talent Cup road racer Billy van Eerde riding Jack Miller’s dirt track machines.

The racing in the 125cc category was fast and furious, with some great match ups to watch. Ultimately Cyshan Weale again prevailed over Billy van Eerde, with Blake Cobbin taking third.

Cyshan Weale and Billy van Eerde

It was also good to see a grid of six women, including rivals Briony Hendrickson and Brooke Goulding, who have been fierce competitors for quite a few years. Newcomers to the open Women’s 450 class were Emma Scott and Chloe Doak, both making their inaugural appearances. Briony Hendrickson topped the class, ahead of Brooke Goulding and Brie Levy.

Briony Hendrickson

In the 250 Open class it was Ryan Douglas who won from Morty Michelmore, with Ben Montgomery completing the top three. Kevin Bradley topped the Over 45s class, ahead of Peter Jack and John Johnson.

Ryan Douglas

Brayden Bradford was top 100/125 Juniors 13 to U16, ahead of Rory McQualter and Lucas Quinn. George Holmkvist led the 65 cc 7-U9 Years results, from Theo Aefeaki and Lucy Heaton. Riley Nauta won the 65 cc 9-13 Years class, beating Viv Muddle and Brodie Paige.

Viv Muddle won the 85 cc 2st & 150 cc 4St 9-U13 Years category however, while Cooper Archibald was the top performer in the 85 cc 2st & 150 cc 4St 12-U16 Years class.

Rory McQualter was fastest 200-250 cc 4St 13-U16 Years racer, ahead of Brayden Bradford and Lucas Quinn. Topping the Auto Division 7-U9 was George Holmkvist, while Steven McGill was fastest Classic Pre-1990, heading Peter Jack and Darren Saxon.

In the Quads Unlimited Mathew Griffiths was victorious, while Steven Liebke topped the Sidecars.

Topping the sidecars was Steven Liebke

On Saturday everyone was a winner, with spectators getting to see some of the closest hard-fought racing one can hope to see. While the Pro 450 was the main event with $3750 up for grabs all the other classes were equally well contested with numerous personal bests to come from the day’s racing.

Quads and sidecars were also out on track

It was also worthy of note how many participants also compete in road racing both domestically and internationally. It comes as no great surprise that dirt track and flat track racing is a great discipline to learn bike craft for other disciplines.

Billy Van Eerde and Dale Borlase

North Brisbane has become well known for running numerous premier events and will be running the 2022 Australian Junior and Senior Dirt Track Championships.

Two riders from six motorcycle racing disciplines will compete on MX dirt bikes in three back-to-back six lap races with a compulsory on-track pit stop between races 1 and 2 as well as between races 2 and 3.

Michael Kirkness and Paul Caslick topped the All Stars Discipline Showdown, collecting 116-points as the Dirt Track entry. Tied on points in second was the Off-Road team of Beau Ralston and Kodi Stephens, as well as the Speedway team of Sam Masters and Josh Pickering.

Mario Roman wins 2022 Ales Trem Hard Enduro

The Ales Trem Hard Enduro returned to action over the weekend and saw 500 racers line up for the event in Southern France, kicking off the season with every rider taking two runs of the Xtrem Sprint Test, with Wade Young looking strong.

It was Alfredo Gomez who topped the Saturday prologue, which ended the day under lights, with plenty of challenges including a bent gear level at one point, before passing Romans for the win.

A long Sunday of racing would be the deciding factor however, with the Alex Trem truly earning the name of hard enduro, with just three riders eventually finishing the day.

The top three were Roman, Young and Gomez who led through the first two two-hour laps, posting the fastest time, with nightfall adding further challenges that saw the final lap take three hours to complete.

Disaster also struck for Wade Young who ran out of fuel just short of the fimish while battling for the lead, which allowed Roman to run away with it, while Gomez also snuck past for second place. That regulated Young to third, but still being able to lay claim to being one of the few finishers.

The result further cemends Mario Roman’s title as most successful Ales Trem rider, ahead of Jonny Walker and Graham Jarvis, neither of whom competed this year.

Factory Honda Australia team up with HGS

Australia’s Factory Honda Team will be powered by HGS in 2022 under an all-new partnership that will see the championship winning team racing running HGS exhaust components.

HGS Exhausts

HGS was formed in 1988, and founder Henri Gorthuis gained valuable experience and insight working in the world motocross championship.

Henri Gorthuis – HGS Founder

“I worked with John van der Berk in the early 80’s before moving to White Power. I was always working with motorcycles. My father had built exhausts for BSA in the 60’s and 70’s and it was something that interested me. Now my son is involved with the company and together we work on growing HGS throughout the world.”

Performance is at the heart of HGS and this is why Team Director Yarrive Konsky choose HGS, “We tested their range of exhaust systems before making the decision. We don’t comprise performance. We had our Engine builder in America testing with HGS and we also tested in Australia. It was unanimous. Their products perform,” he explained.

HGS Exhausts

Australian Champion Kyle Webster has already experienced success with HGS, he was also involved in the initial testing.

Kyle Webster

“Its always very cool to be involved in testing new product. I started testing the product on the all new CRF250R. HGS did their homework, the overall power was improved, and it improved top end and low end power. On the 450 it was surprisingly good. The standard 450 is fast, you don’t need a lot more power, but the HGS compliments the motor. The connection is great, there is a little more everywhere and it revs out longer, but its smooth. I was pumped with the holeshots we achieved on my way to our maiden win at the AMX MX OPEN last year.”

For more information on HGS in Australia go to the HGS Exhaust Systems Australia website (link).

Will & Levi Campbell to Firepower Honda for 2022

Factory Honda Australia’s team owner Yarrive Konsky has signed Australians Levi and Will Campbell to their newly formed amateur program in America.

Levi and Will Campbell have been racing and training in America since 2016. Team owner Yarrive Konsky first noticed the two riders when he visited MTF in 2019.

Yarrive Konsky

“There are several Australian riders training at MTF, and I am encouraged to see the level of talent coming out of Australia. Levi and Will and several other Australian riders are doing what they need to do to pursue a career in racing. Will achieved outstanding results this year in the Mini O’s with several top fives.”

Since 2016 Levi and William have been trained by Colleen Millsaps and Bryan Johnson.

Will Campbell

“When Yarrive spoke to my parents I was super excited. The success he has achieved with other juniors in Australia is unreal. He has also trained at MTF and its cool to have someone that understands what it takes, plus the teams new manager Martin (Davalos) is one of the best riders and I think I can learn a lot from him also.”

Will Campbell
Will Campbell

Levi, the elder of the two was happy that their efforts had been noticed and is excited to race for the Firepower Honda team.

Levi Campbell

“The success Yarrive has achieved in America in two short years is awesome. His team has top 5 finishes in the 250 pro class and have been on the podium in the 450 class. In Australia he has the most winningest team in Supercross in the past 10 years. I grew up watching the juniors that rode for him in Australia. Mosig, Phillips, Williamson, McNeil, Berwick, Cachia, he has helped so many and I am excited to learn from him, Martin and Jordon and Jarrett. Being at MTF I have watched Martin for years; he is one of the best riders in America and has over 20 podiums and many career wins. Knowing that he wants to do this gives me confidence that we are doing something right. I already have learnt so much by just watching him, and I can’t wait to learn more from him and the team.”

Levi Campbell

Troy Campbell the father of Levi and Will is happy that the work his boys have been putting in has been noticed and appreciates the support Yarrive is providing.

Corey Texter returns to AFT with G&G Racing for 2022

Reigning Production Twins Champion Cory Texter will return to the G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing team for the 2022 Progressive American Flat Track season.

Cory Texter – 2021 AFT Sacramento Mile I

Texter will compete for G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing for a fourth consecutive season, with two Mission Production Twins championships (‘19 & ‘21) and one class runner-up (‘20) earned in their three previous campaigns. Last season, he scored seven wins and 11 podiums en route to an 85-point championship margin.

G&G Racing is a father-and-son-owned team based in Southern California that is supported by Yamaha Racing. Team owners John and John ‘LJ’ Gronek are pleased to have Texter officially back on board for the upcoming season.

LJ Gronek

“We are thrilled to have Cory back for another year, this will be our fourth season together, and we have really developed a great relationship. We look forward to defending the #1 plate. Cory works hard and never quits. And we work hard to provide him with the best Yamaha MT-07s possible to allow him to do his best.”

Texter has been onboard the Yamaha MT-07 for three years and is confident heading into the 2022 season.

Corey Texter

“I have been pretty quiet this offseason regarding my plans for 2022. I wasn’t sure what the plan was, honestly. We waited around for the rules package to be announced, and along with my team and sponsors, we made the decision to race another year in the Mission Production Twins class. We had a great 2021, but looking at some of our results, I feel like we have a lot of room to improve, and we will see where that puts us for the future. I bought an MT-07 practice bike that G&G Racing built for me that I will be able to test this winter, which is something that I feel will really benefit our program. I am enjoying the process and eager to continue training hard as we get ready to get back at it in a few short months.”

Roof Systems of Dallas, Texas, will once again be a major supporter of Texter, along with Mission Foods, Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties, McElroy Packaging, Kicker Audio, Motul USA, Bell Helmets, Fredericktown Yamaha, Klock Werks, Motion Pro, Alpinestars, AIM Sports and Mike Butler Racing.

Cory will bring the fans behind the scenes this season via a new YouTube series produced by Taylor Treadwell. The series will show lifestyle and race related videos from Texter’s endeavors with his family traveling the country racing in the Progressive American Flat Track series. Jonathan Rea | Irish Motorcyclist of the Year for record ninth time

Irish Motorcyclist of the Year 2022

World Superbike star Jonathan Rea is the Adelaide Irish Motorcyclist of the Year for a record breaking ninth time.

The 34-year-old surpasses the record held by the legendary Joey Dunlop, who was an eight-time winner between 1979 and 2000.

It Is also the seventh time in a row that Rea has lifted Irish motorcycling’s top honour.

There was little doubt that the Kawasaki rider would scoop the main prize following his second place finish in this year’s World Championship.

This is incredible,” said Rea. “To beat the record set by Joey Dunlop is simply unreal. He was my hero growing up and to think I have now won this award once more than him is hard to believe.

“The Dunlop and Rea families have a great connection as my grandfather was one of the Joey’s first sponsors. To this day for me to even be mentioned in the same breath as Joey Dunlop is very humbling, as he was one of the greatest sporting ambassadors this country has ever had.

As the annual gala evening was unable to be staged because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rea received the famous Joey Dunlop trophy at his home in Belfast with the presentation broadcast during a virtual awards ceremony.

I am gutted I can’t receive this trophy on the night,” continued Rea. “It’s such a wonderful occasion every year when all the motorcycling industry come together under one roof.

“I receive so much support from the fans there and I will miss seeing them all. This is an incredible trophy with so much history which will once again take pride of place as the centrepiece in my home.”

Irish Motorcyclist of the Year 2022

Rea was pipped to the World Superbike title by just 13 points by winner Toprak Razgatlioglu, but is determined to get his crown back next year.

I assure everyone I am planning a big assault on this new season. I am excited about the challenge, I am training hard and can’t wait to get going when the first round gets under way at the start of April in Spain.

Five other awards were presented during the virtual awards which is available to watch on demand via YouTube. There are interviews with all the winners in the special programme hosted by Stephen Watson and Keith Huewen. ]

Yamaha’s answer to the Gold Wing is the air-cooled 1,845cc V-twin-powered Star Venture. Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited

Harley-Davidson has a full line of Grand American Touring models, but the Ultra Limited is one of the best-suited for two-up rides straight off the showroom floor. The massive Milwaukee-114 V-twin engine is the biggest you can get in a standard H-D Touring bike, the Boom! Box GTS infotainment system is fully decked, and the plush passenger seating setup will allow your companion to take in the sights all day long. The large, fork-mounted fairing provides a calm cockpit, and integrated luggage makes it easy to leave home for long stretches.

The platform is incredibly smooth, from its power output to the way the dynamic ESA soaks up road imperfections. It has all the creature comforts you and your passenger need to handle a bevy of different ride conditions, and an elegant and effective design that effortlessly cuts through the air. Plus, if you like the base platform, you can upgrade to get even more out of your machine with the K 1600 GTL Grand America.

Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS

The Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS has power, has handling, and has the track record of being a beloved long-range touring bike. In standard trim, the 1,352cc inline-four-powered motorcycle doesn’t immediately scream “two-up” like other bikes on this list, but add the Kawasaki top case and passenger backrest and suddenly you have a machine that’s very accommodating for two riders. It won’t come with all the creature comforts as some of the other machines we’ve listed, but it has one of the most approachable price tags of the bunch and opens the door to more sporting solo rides when two-up isn’t on the menu.

As the name suggests, the BMW R 18 Transcontinental is designed to tackle miles and miles of road without missing a beat. The 1,802cc boxer twin is one of the newest machines in this particular segment, and its classic styling combined with contemporary amenities make this one of the most head-turning machines on the list. It has a full suite of electronic ride aids, state-of-the-art cockpit, super cozy seating, advanced wind deflection solutions, and a low-maintenance shaft drive. BMW also offers loads of upgrades and personalization options.

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited is the second from the Bar & Shield brand and closely resembles the slightly more pricey Ultra Limited. It has all the essential bells and whistles for long-range two-up rides, including integrated luggage, plush seating, ample wind protection, and a powerful Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin engine. Linked Brembo braking kit and a dialed infotainment setup sweeten the deal, and styling is unmistakably Harley.

Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS

Kawasaki’s Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS packs a 1,700cc V-twin, electronic cruise control, K-ACT ABS braking system, plenty of cargo space, and a somewhat bare but effective infotainment setup. It doesn’t feature the higher-spec TFT instrument panel as many of the other machines on this list, but the stripped-down design has its own type of appeal, especially as a complement to the classic aesthetic of the machine as a whole.

The Triumph Speedmaster is a great two-up bike with a few upgrades.

Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster

The Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster isn’t quite as formidable as the other bikes on the list, but with the accessory passenger backrest, side bags, and windscreen added to the package it quickly becomes an appealing two-up machine. The torquey 1,200cc twin can easily carry the added weight of a passenger, and the styling is elegant and eye-catching. Plus, the price tag, even with the added cost of a few upgrades, is still under that of the other bikes on the list.
