2020 is up and running in Moto2 and Moto3 and it was Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) who ended day one at the official Jerez test as the man to beat in the intermediate class, with Sergio Garcia (Estrella Galicia 0,0) taking the honour in the lightweight class.

In Moto2, Gardner set his scorching 1m40.848s in the final session of the day to top the timesheets, with an impressive Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team) slotting into second but 0.269s down. Perennial title challenger Tom Luthi (Liqui Moly Intact GP) was the only other rider to get within half a second of Gardner, taking P3.

Behind the quickest trio came reigning FIM CEV Moto2 European champion Edgar Pons (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) to make it a Kalex top four lockout, the Spaniard sitting 0.587s off Gardner. After an impressive private test, rookie Aron Canet (Aspar Team) began the Official Test in fine form too as the Spaniard finished P5 on day one with a 1m41.439s – the top Speed Up and rookie.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Tetsuta Nagashima, who gets on the team’s new Kalex chassis with previous experience, was fifth, ahead of an impressive first run out for MV Agusta Forward Racing’s Simone Corsi, with the Italian veteran less than half a tenth off Nagashima, in P7. The second-fastest Speed Up on day one was 2019 Jerez podium finisher Jorge Navarro (Speed Up Racing) in P8, with Xavi Vierge (Petronas Sprinta Racing) splitting Navarro from his teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio, who was 10th.

Navarro is also the man whose pole lap from 2019 is the lap record time Gardner beat on day one, so there’s likely plenty to come from the field yet. But it was nevertheless a competitive start to the season for the intermediate class, with under two seconds splitting the top 25 riders.

In Moto3, it was Sergio Garcia who picked up where he left off in 2019. The Valencia GP winner topped the timesheets on Wednesday, although it wasn’t by much – with Petronas Sprinta Racing’s John McPhee just 0.060 in arrears. Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia) impressed to complete the top three, another tenth and a half back.

2019 Jerez winner Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) was fourth fastest overall, although he was just 0.011s ahead of Gabriel Rodrigo (Kommerling Gresini Moto3), the man who broke the lap record in private testing last week. Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) took P6, ahead of Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) in seventh as the Spaniard seems to have quickly settled into life on the Honda.

The top KTM rider on day one was Albert Arenas (Aspar Team) just behind Masia, with Filip Salac (Rivacold Snipers Team) in P9 after a noteworthy day on the timesheets for the Czech rider.

Noteworthy was also apt for the man in 10th – Romano Fenati (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team). The veteran Italian was fastest Husqvarna on Wednesday as the marque return to Moto3 competition, making it all three manufacturers in the top 10 as 2020 begins.

A fundraiser page was started to raise money for Scott’s family.

You can support the fundraiser by clicking here. It is still open and so far more than $17,000 of a $10,000 goal has been raised.

The fundraiser page was started by brother-in-law, Codie Holliday, to raise money to support Scott’s wife Tenniel and his children Lacey, 9, and Nash, 6.

“As the sole income provider for his family, Scott’s tragic death is impacting his family in so many awful ways, including financially,” Codie says on the fundraiser page.

Scott was a maintenance technician at Movie World and Sea World.

Codie says Scott “loved riding bikes, fixing them, his kids both have bikes and I’m fairly sure the garage has a number of ongoing bike ‘projects’ always”.

Unlicensed trail bikes riders copped

Unlicensed trail bike riders have been caught by NSW Police for a variety of offences in a move we applaud and many other riders should.

Unlicensed riders on unregistered motorcycles, often wearing inappropriate gear and performing dangerous and illegal stunts, give the rest of us law-abiding riders a bad name.

Trail bike operation

Lake Macquarie Police District targeted the illegal use of unregistered trail bikes in an operation yesterday (Wednesday 19 February 2020), focusing on the areas of Windale, Glendale and Cameron Park.

During the operation, a rider was seen travelling on Main Road, Cameron Park before the 28-year-old man was arrested on Nancy Close about 3pm.

He was taken to Toronto Police Station and charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, display misleading plates, use unregistered and uninsured vehicle, possess prohibited drugs and drive whilst disqualified.

The Teralba man has been refused bail to appear at Toronto Local Court today.

A second rider, a 33-year-old man, was arrested about 4.20pm after being seen travelling from Windale to Dudley.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, use unregistered and uninsured vehicle, rider not wear helmet, unlicensed rider and trespass.

The Gateshead man has been granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Monday 24 February 2020

During the operation, police also issued three infringements for negligent driving, two youth cautions for riding unregistered bikes and seized four unregistered trail bikes.

Lake Macquarie Police District Commander Superintendent Daniel Sullivan said police will continue to detect and deter illegal trail bike offences throughout the Lake Macquarie area through these operations.

“The behaviour of trail bike riders is a major concern for police. Their reckless behaviour not only places their lives at risk but more importantly, those of innocent people,” he says.

“When riders are detected breaking the law, police will take appropriate action by issuing infringements, charges, suspending licences and seizing bikes.”

Comment

Dirt bikeMBW enjoys the occasional legal “dirt squirt”

We applaud the crackdown on unlicensed trail bike riders on unregistered bikes, even if it means some legitimate riders may be held up by police for licence checks.

Unlicensed and unregistered riders not only give us a bad name, but they tend to crash and die and distort the road toll statistics which authorities use to further harass riders.

While there are many legitimate trail and adventure riders and we also enjoy getting off the main roads and on to forestry trails, there are trail bike riders who also do the wrong thing.

Among their sins are riding off designated trails, trespassing, riding through paddocks, alarming livestock, causing erosion and not closing farm gates behind them.

It is getting so bad that some states are now considering banning people from riding bikes on their own land within 500m of a neighbour because of the noise.

Electric trail bikes should help resolve that issue.

Meanwhile, there are still many legitimate forestry tails for registered trail and adventure bikes and 4WDs.

We found these websites for various states: Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and  Western Australia.

Gardner breaks lap record on Day 1 in Jerez

It was pleasant conditions for the riders at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto as the first of three days in Andalucia began on Wednesday. A notable absentee was the unfortunate Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), the British star suffering a fracture and dislocation to his right shoulder in a private Jerez test last week. The number 22 will sit out the entire test as he rests up for the Qatar Test, just before the season begins at the Losail International Circuit on the 6th-8th March.

Beachs Motorcycle Adventures Announces the Alpine Apogee

Beach’s Motorcycle Adventures’ new Alpine Apogee tour is something we should test… FOR OUR READERS!

Begin Press Release:

Beach’s Motorcycle Adventures, Ltd. Announces the Alpine Apogee

New European Tour Winds its Way Through the Austrian and Slovenian Alps

Grand Island, NY, February 18, 2020 – Beach’s Motorcycle Adventures, Ltd. announces a new motorcycle itinerary highlighting the Austrian and Slovenian Alps. Starting in Munich, the 9-day tour will travel through Germany, Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. Tour dates will be May 30 through June 8, 2020, scheduled perfectly to capture spring riding in the Alps.

“This new itinerary offers a beautiful blend of stunning scenery, very comfortable lodgings, picturesque stops, and magical little roads,” said Rob Beach, CEO and Tour Leader, who has guided more than 200 tours worldwide. “The mountains here will definitely stir a rider’s soul. Between the beautiful vistas, quiet Austrian roads, and rolling hills and farmland we venture through, the riding on this tour is simply unforgettable.”

The Austrian Steiermark, an area largely unknown to North Americans, features scenery best enjoyed from the seat of a motorcycle. Water in alpine lakes glistens with stunning reflections of the surrounding mountains. Snow-capped peaks contrast with the lush green fields below. LakeBled is on the itinerary for two overnights in choice accommodations. And no trip focusing on Austria would be complete without a crossing of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Climbing the pass on a road cut between 20+ foot-tall snow banks is an experience that will not be easy to forget.

“Our new Alpine Apogee tour exposes riders to an interesting mix of cultures—from Slavic cultures in Slovenia, the Germanic cultures in Germany and Austria, and even a little bit of Northern Italy. After conquering dozens of major mountain passes, riding breathtaking panoramic routes and visiting fascinating Alpine towns, every tour member will have a very full scrapbook of memories to bring home,” said Beach.

FlexBox HP 40 unveil 2020 bikes

Sito Pons, Team Principal: “Presenting the team one more season is always special. This year we have a present and future bet; we repeat with Lorenzo Baldassarri, whom we already know well. Together we have won races and the Team World Championship last season, we have led the championship, and the goal of this season is to do it again, be regular and constant and this will lead us to be in the fight for the riders’ title. On the other side of the box will be Hector Garzó, a young fast and talented driver, a bet in the future and we welcome him to the team. The truth is that in his first test he left us all impressed by his speed and on our part we will give him all the tools and facilities so that he is calm and can exploit his talent. Both riders will give us many joys this season. Again, the FlexBox HP 40 is possible thanks to the trust of our partners in the project. Without them it would not be possible so I want to thank them one more season for their support. Now it’s our job to give it back with great racers so we can enjoy it together.”
