‘More to come’ insists Mellross after long-awaited podium

MX1 runner-up ends a nearly two-year drought for CDR Yamaha rider.

Image: Foremost Media.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Hayden Mellross insists there’s ‘more to come’ after claiming his first podium since July 2019, his runner-up result at Canberra’s second round of the 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship coming as a huge relief to the number 45.

Mellross was in title contention during the 2019 season before a knee injury at the closing rounds ruled him out of supercross that year, and along with racing being cancelled altogether in 2020, it meant the New South Welshman went almost two years without experiencing podium success at a national level.

The 25-year-old, who grew up in Goulbourn near Canberra, put on an impressive display in front of a home crowd as he charged to fourth in the opening encounter, however he really came into his own during the pair of back-to-back 13-minute plus one-lap motos, where he went 3-3 for second overall.

“It’s been too long since I stood on a podium at a national event,” said a relieved Mellross. “With Covid and injuries, it’s been a long time between podium visits, so I’m glad to finally get back up here and reward myself and the team for the hard work we have all put in behind the scenes.

“Today was an improvement on Wonthaggi as my speed was better. My starts weren’t what they needed to be, but I will work on that and hopefully put myself in better positions to win races at the next round.

“The more racing I’m able to do, the better I feel as I missed a large chunk of the pre-season with injury. I feel there is still more to come and think there is room for improvement as we head into Adelaide.”

The runner-up result promoted Mellross to third in the championship standings, one position ahead of team-mate and Canberra overall winner Luke Clout (Monster Energy CDR Yamaha).

Turnaround sees Ferguson rise for first MX2 podium

GasGas-mounted contender secures runner-up honours in the ACT.

Image: Foremost Media.

A pair of third-place results amounted to a career-first MX2 podium for rookie Noah Ferguson, the GasGas-mounted rider experiencing a turnaround performance at Canberra’s second round of the 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship on Sunday.

The youthful Queenslander endured a challenging opening round last month in victoria, mustering up just 10 championship points with a 13-DNF scorecard.

It was a drastic turnaround in the ACT for Ferguson, who after claiming an impressive second overall result, suggested an anticipated maiden podium would come further along in the series after his difficult start to the championship.

“I’m pretty pumped with my first P2 in MX2, which was only my second race in that category,” Ferguson told MotoOnline.com.au. “The podium hasn’t surprised me – it was always the goal and the intention to be on the podium, but after round one, it was more of a doubt.

“I knew that’s where I needed to be, and it was a bit of a breakthrough ride to be on the podium so early. I’m always driving to be better – I’ll just take it week by week, and try to get better and be more consistent – that’s been the biggest downfall in my years of racing. I’d say it’s flipped a few goals around.”

The breakthrough result now sees Ferguson ranked seventh in the MX2 championship standings as ProMX visits South Australia for the next stop on the calendar, scheduled for 30 May.

Larwood hospitalised after Canberra collision

Dislocated shoulder puts WBR Yamaha rider in race against time for Gillman.

WBR Yamaha Race Team’s Alex Larwood was hospitalised following a moto two collision in Canberra’s second stop of the 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship, where a dislocated shoulder now puts him in a race against time for his home round in South Australia at the end of the month.

The MX2 rookie collided with Yamaha counterpart Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) in the early stages of moto two, crashing heavily and dislocating his shoulder in the process.

The teenager was initially treated by the Race Safe Medical Crew, however was forced to seek further medical treatment at the hospital for his shoulder to be repositioned in place.

Larwood, who finished 14th in the opening moto, is hopeful of making a swift recovery in the coming weeks, with his home round at Gillman set to be staged in just under four weeks’ time on 30 May.

“I got off to an awesome start, and I was running around sixth and just got by Rhys Budd and then I passed Jay Wilson as well,” Larwood told MotoOnline.com.au. “As soon as I passed Jay, in the next corner – going by the mechanic’s pit lane where they had that single – and Jay sort of not jumped into me, but we collided and I got taken down.

“I dislocated my shoulder and Race Safe couldn’t get it back in, so I had to go to hospital and get it popped back in there. I reckon I should be fine [for Gillman], I’m going to see Jon [Park] tomorrow and start physio – hopefully everything goes to plan and I can be back for round three at my home track.”

The number five recently beat MX2 points leader Kyle Webster (Honda Racing) – who’s undefeated in ProMX this season – at the Gillman venue in a South Australian Motocross Championship event, although his current injury cloud puts him doubt of repeating the feat on a national stage.

Waters rides ‘within capabilities’ on way to fourth overall

Husqvarna Racing Team entry takes cautious approach in Canberra.

Image: Foremost Media.

Defending Australian MX1 champion Todd Waters was satisfied to take away a consistent points haul at Canberra’s second round of the 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship, admitting he rode within his capabilities to secure fourth overall.

Waters displayed strong form during early proceedings in the ACT, setting the second-fastest time in qualifying before finishing runner-up in the opening moto, which saw the number one put in comeback performance after dropping outside the top five.

Track conditions significantly deteriorated in the back half of the day, with the Canberra circuit becoming incredibly slick and dusty. It led the Husqvarna Racing Team rider to take a cautious approach in the new back-to-back sprint format – the first of 2021 – where he rode within his limits to 4-5 results, finishing two points shy of the overall podium.

“It was an interesting day out there,” Waters explained. “I qualified well and had a good first race, but the track baked out before the back-to-back races and I struggled with that hard-pack.

“It was an easy track to throw it away on and, with everyone being so close, I didn’t want that to happen. I rode within my capabilities and I’m happy to walk away with the points today – it’s certainly a lot better than crashing and getting 10ths. We might have lost a few points in the championship, but we’ll go back, regroup and look forward to Gillman.”

The Queenslander remains second in the championship standings, seven points down on red-plate holder and MX1 rookie Regan Duffy (KTM Racing Team) as the series returns to action on 30 May at Gillman in South Australia.

Webb takes 450SX championship with dominant win

Nichols, Cooper crowned as Lawrence wins 250SX Showdown.

Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb scored a dominant victory at the final round of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross season in Salt Lake City to take his second 450SX championship.

After getting a great start in the main event, Webb found himself behind his championship rival Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) and locked in a battle with Roczen’s teammate Chase Sexton.

Sexton and Webb went back and forth for the opening laps, allowing Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) to get in on the action as followed the pack in fourth, all the while Roczen stretched out to a bit of a lead at the front.

Sexton broke away from the Red Bull KTM duo, running down his teammate and taking the lead with 14 minutes to go in the race and stretched out a four-second lead over the next few laps. Roczen then came under siege from the charging Red Bull KTM’s.

With 10 minutes to go, Webb pulled the trigger on an aggressive pass to take second from Roczen, allowing Musquin past in the process. Roczen dropped down the order shortly thereafter,  eventually finishing in 10th on the night, securing second in the championship.

Webb proved he was not to be denied, running Sexton down with four minutes to go, making the pass after a bobble from Sexton that also allowed Musquin through for an eventual Red Bull KTM 1-2 finish.

Sexton brought it home in third, notching another podium in what was an impressive rookie season in the premier class despite some crashes and subsequent injuries. His finish also locked up the manufacturer’s championship for Team Honda HRC.

Fourth went to newly crowned 2021 450SX rookie of the year Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha), with his teammate Malcolm Stewart finishing just behind him rounding out the top five.

Joey Savatgy wrapped up his season with an impressive sixth-place result aboard his Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM, taking his best finish of the season in the final race. Justin Barcia (TLD Red Bull GasGas) battled hard for seventh, making plenty of aggressive moves throughout the race in typical BamBam fashion.

Eighth-place on the night went to Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) who battled inside the top five with his teammates for a good portion of the race.

Out-going champion Eli Tomac’s (Monster Energy Kawasaki) rough start did him little good in his last ride with the number one plate, as he found himself locked in a heated battle for seventh for most of the race.

Roczen’s bid for the championship ended with a 10th-place finish, the Team Honda HRC man dropping down the order after being passed by Webb, with Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) finding himself 11th on the night, missing out on his eighth straight top-10 after an impressive run in the back half of the season.

It was a wild night of racing in the 250SX East/West shootout for the conclusion the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross championship with Jett Lawrence putting his Team Honda HRC CRF250R on top of the box ahead of Colt Nichols and his brother Hunter Lawrence.

The final round of the 2021 championship saw the 250SX classes collide for the Dave Coombs Sr. 250SX Showdown at Rice-Eccles Stadium. After a day of overcast skies, the track came together nicely to create incredible racing for the final round.

With both championships on the line, Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammates Nichols and Justin Cooper came into the night needing few points to pick up their titles.

At the start of the main, it was all Nichols, taking a commanding holeshot over Seth Hammaker (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and Jett Lawrence, the trio setting a solid pace out front for the opening five minutes of the race with Cooper maintaining down in eighth place.

Hunter Lawrence joined the party at the front, as the brothers began to pressure Hammaker for second. Jett eventually made the move and set out after Nichols, with Hunter hitting the ground attempting a pass just moments later.

As the laps wore down, Jett closed the gap to Nichols, making a pass stick and heading into the lead, while his older brother caught McAdoo for the final spot on the podium.

As Jett crossed the line for the showdown win with Nichols just behind, Hunter made a last-lap pass on McAdoo with just a half-lap to go to put brothers on a Supercross podium for the first time in history.

The headline of the night though went to the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammates of Nichols and Cooper, who brought home the 250SX East and West championships with second and ninth-place finishes, both taking career-first titles.

The trio of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s finished fourth through sixth on the evening, with McAdoo taking fourth, Hammaker in fifth, and Jo Shimoda grabbing fifth on the evening.

Seventh-place went to Pierce Brown (TLD Red Bull GasGas) who came out on top of a battle between eventual eighth-place finisher Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).

250SX West class champion Cooper, who rode a steady, trouble-free race with the championship clearly in mind, ahead of Kyle Peters who put his Phoenix Racing Honda in the final spot in the top 10.

Michael Mosiman (TLD Red Bull GasGas) took a dominant heat race win but hit the ground early in a first turn pile-up in the main event and would eventually finish the night in 15th.

Clout bounces back to win Canberra ProMX

Image: Foremost Media

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Racing’s Luke Clout has claimed overall victory at the second round of the 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship with an impressive performance at Canberra.

In the opening Thor MX1 race, Clout had the jump on the Thor MX1 field and got the holeshot, with a large group of the title contenders in hot pursuit.

Team-mates Brett Metcalfe (Mongrel Boots Honda) and Kirk Gibbs (Terrafirma Equipment Sales Honda) engaged in an intense battle, before they both fell into the clutches of Todd Waters (Husqvarna Racing Team), Hayden Mellross (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Racing) and red plate holder Regan Duffy (KTM Racing Team).

BBR 102 Motorsports’ Matt Moss suffered a big crash several laps in and suffered his second DNF in a row.

Up front, Clout maintained a 10-second lead over Waters for the remainder of the race, with a fast-finishing Duffy crossing the finish line in third.

Mellross and Gibbs completed the top five. Metcalfe, Jayden Rykers (Empire Kawasaki), Aaron Tanti (GasGas Racing Team), Jai Walker (Yamaha) and Jay Lamb (Yamaha) completed the top 10.

In the first of the two back-to-back races, Luke Clout again scored the holeshot, followed by Duffy, with Mellross and Waters in hot pursuit.

The teenager Duffy managed to get the hooks into Clout and kept close for most of the race, but a couple of small errors enabled Clout to stretch out a three-second lead that he held to the finish.

Mellross put in a late-moto charge at Duffy but ultimately settled for third in the shortened race.

Waters crossed the line in fourth and Metcalfe fifth. Purvis made a late charge to nab Gibbs for sixth, while Rykers, Lamb and Joel Wightman (Yamaha) completed the top 10.

Kirk Gibbs got the best jump off the gate in the second back-to-back race, leading Clout and Duffy into the first turn.

On the early laps Mellross found a way past Duffy, but an off-track excursion allowed the KTM rider back past.

Up front, Clout stalked Gibbs for a handful of laps before pulling the trigger with a great pass for the lead.

Gibbs refused to give up and shunted Clout off the track a lap later when their lines came together. From that point Gibbs wasn’t challenged as he took his first race win of the season.

CDR Yamaha pairing Clout and Mellross (who worked his way past Duffy for a podium finish midway through the race) finished second and third, ahead of Duffy and Waters.

Purvis settled for sixth, ahead of Metcalfe settled for seventh, ahead of Rykers, Tanti, and Lamb.

In the championship standings, Duffy retains the championship lead with 85 points, ahead of Todd Waters (78) and Hayden Mellross (73). Clout’s performance has seen him rise to fourth (72) in the standings, with Gibbs fifth (70).

Honda racer maintains perfect season after two ProMX rounds.

Image: Foremost Media

Delcon Civil Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster has kept his flawless Pirelli MX2 season intact with a dominant 1-1 performance at the second round of the Penrite ProMX Championship at Canberra, ACT.

In the opening race, the MX2 points leader Webster enjoyed a perfect jump off the gate and led the field through the first turn, followed by Noah Ferguson (GasGas) and Yamalube Yamaha pairing Rhys Budd and Jay Wilson.

Serco Yamaha title contender Nathan Crawford’s YZ250F came to a stop early in the race with a sparkplug issue, forcing him into a costly DNF, as Webster stretched his lead.

Recovering from an average start, WBR Yamaha Bulk Nutrients’ Alex Larwood pushed through the pack, but tangled with Budd in a rutted right-hander and they both went down.

Meanwhile, Wilson put in some good passes and worked his way into second place, but found himself in a lonely position, unable to close the gap on Webster, while stretching a comfortable buffer over Ferguson.

Webster led Wilson past the chequered flag with a comfortable 14-second lead, with Ferguson riding strongly to third position.

Dylan Wills (Husqvarna) and Budd rounded out the top five. Levi Rogers (Yamalube Yamaha Racing), Jayce Cosford (Yamaha), Jesse Dobson (Serco Yamaha), Korey McMahon (GasGas) and Isaac Ferguson (GasGas) completed the top 10.

Noah Ferguson grabbed the holeshot of the second MX2 moto with Webster hot on his heels, jumping into the lead before the first lap was completed.

Using his spare Yamaha, Nathan Crawford held down third early on, before turning the screws on Ferguson and taking over second place at the midway mark.

Behind him the battle hot between Wilson, Budd and Larwood, before Larwood crashed out and injured his shoulder.

Budd and Wilson continued to engage in a torrid race-long battle before Budd made his way past his team-mate into third.

Webster took the race victory and kept his perfect season intact, followed by Crawford and Ferguson.

Budd finished fourth, and Dobson fifth after a late-moto pass on Wilson. Jayce Cosford finished seventh, followed by Korey McMahon, Jy Roberts, and Dylan Wills.

In the championship standings, Webster (100) leads Yamaha racers Rhys Budd (69) and Jesse Dobson (67). Jay Wilson (66) and Nathan Crawford (60) complete the top five.

Honda Racing’s Webster to wear Castrol livery in Canberra

Honda Racing’s Webster to wear Castrol livery in Canberra

Iconic combination aligns for round two of ProMX Championship.

Image: Supplied.

The Honda Racing CRF250R of MX2 red plate-holder Kyle Webster will wear a Castrol livery this weekend in Canberra as part of a rotating commercial package.

Webster’s bike was in Delcon Civil branding at Wonthaggi’s opening round when he completed the double to open the 2021 season, now adopting the iconic Castrol Honda colours.

“Honda has had great success with Castrol in motorcycle racing for a very long time and I am proud to carry on that tradition with my Castrol CRF250R,” Webster commented.

Honda Racing team director Yarrive Konsky added: “Castrol’s global success is unmatched in motorsport and they have achieved local and international success with Honda, so it was a no brainer partnership. Plus, we believe in their product – that’s the key.”

For Castrol national motorcycle brand manager Duncan Hale, the opportunity to align with Honda Racing and Webster with an increased presence for round two of the ProMX Championship was an ideal one.

“Castrol is a proven product in MotoGP, motocross and supercross, as well as in F1,” Hale stated. “The strategic alignment with the factory Honda Racing team in Australia is important to Castrol. It gives our range credibility, especially if Honda chooses to use it in their factory motorcycles.”

While Webster’s entry has moved across to Castrol for this weekend, Brett Metcalfe will maintain Mongrel Boots and Kirk Gibbs Terrafirma Equipment Sales in Honda Racing’s MX1 program.
