Cross Country 7.0

The Cross Country 7.0 is at the top of the segment’s list, powered by a 250W Yamaha PW-ST motor and integrated Yamaha ML500 battery with fast-charging capability. The power delivery system is straightforward, lacking the more sophisticated Quad Sensory System featured on the higher-spec offerings in the GasGas family. It utilizes an aluminum alloy hardtail frame with SR Suntour XCR32 LOR DS fork and is equipped with Tektro HD-M520 brakes front and rear. A SRAM SX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain is equipped and the 29-inch front and rear wheels are shod in Continental Cross King tires. MSRP: 3,199 euros.

It features an aluminum alloy hardtail frame with SR Suntour XCT30 HLO DS fork, 29-inch wheels front and rear, and Impac RidgePac tires. There’s also a Shimano nine-speed drivetrain and Tektro HD-M275 brakes. MSRP: 2,699 euros.

The Dual Cross is the only city-specific option in the 2021 GasGas ebike family and will be available in two flavors, the standard 6.0 and the Wave 6.0. The primary difference is the lack of a top tube in the Wave frame. Otherwise, both bikes are powered by a 250W Yamaha PW-ST motor and a fast-charging Yamaha ML500 battery. Both make use of a 10-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, Tektro HD-M500 brakes, and roll on 27.5-inch wheels with Schwalbe Johnny Watts rubber. These bikes also include lighting kits, rear panniers, and kickstands to make your next around-town adventure a breeze. MSRP: 3,099 euros.

FAB-Racing Minibike British Championship is underway

Race two was the pick of the weekend with a scintillating on-track battle took place. Edmunds was looking at continuing his 100% start to the season and led away off the line ahead of Holt, Scofield and a lighting starting Warwick Brady who was making his return after a season ending injury took away most of his 2020 campaign. The weekend had gone all the way of Edmunds, but Holt had started to look much more racy on his new bike and held onto the rear tyre of Edmunds for the entirety of the race and with a final lap tantalisingly close, Edmunds just did enough to hold off Holt as the pair crossed the line split by a tenth of a second. Luke Scofield made another trip to the podium in a lonely third, but crucially keeping himself in the early season title picture.

Aussies top opening day of Silverstone BSB test

2021 British Superbike Championship
Silverstone Test

Australia’s Jason O’Halloran has set the initial benchmark as the Bennetts British Superbike Championship testing at Silverstone kicked off on Wednesday as the McAMS Yamaha rider topped all four sessions, edging out title rival and reigning champion Josh Brookes by 0.358s on the combined times.

Jason O’Halloran tops Day 1 of the BSB Silverstone test

The Australian’s best time came in the second session of the day before lunch, with the McAMS Yamaha contender continuing to build momentum in the team’s first test of the season.

Jason O’Halloran – McAMS Yamaha

“To be honest it was great to get back out on the bike. The first session was a little bit patchy, so we just did some laps to get the feeling back. The second session was really good for us. It was pretty much an identical bike to the one I rode here last year. In the lunchbreak, the boys changed the engine and we tried the 2021 spec, which we tried this afternoon for the last two sessions. Although we ended up at the top, this slowed us down a bit – when you put a new spec in you have to work through things like fuelling and throttle cables, so we’ve just been doing laps this afternoon to get things to my liking.Compared with how I felt on the previous bike, the changes we’ve made have been really positive and I feel comfortable, we’ve just got to tweak it to make it my own again. We’ll do that tomorrow and also some chassis stuff, so we can look forward to that tomorrow.”

Jason O’Halloran

Brookes meanwhile was consistently close and the defending champion set his best lap of the day in the third session, which put him 0.074s clear of his teammate Christian Iddon as the VisionTrack Ducati pairing locked out the final top three positions.

Josh Brookes

Kyle Ryde was the leading BMW rider onboard the all-new M 1000 RR, the Rich Energy OMG Racing BMW rider was fourth fastest on the combined timings, setting the second fastest time in the final session of the day as he pushed for a final run before the chequered flag.

Kyle Ryde

Xavi Forés marked his return to Bennetts BSB action with the all-new FHO Racing BMW team by holding fourth place in the final session of the day, putting him in fifth place on the combined times as the Spaniard saved his best until last ahead of day two tomorrow.

Xavi Forés

The overall combined times featured five different manufacturers in the top seven and Buildbase Suzuki’s Danny Kent bounced back from an earlier crash to lead their charge in sixth place with Honda Racing’s Glenn Irwin in seventh place overall.

Tommy Bridewell and Oxford Products Racing Ducati set their best time in the final session of the day, putting him into eighth place and just ahead of Gino Rea on the second of the Buildbase Suzukis with Tarran Mackenzie in tenth place, ending the day early following a crash in the final session.

Empire Kawasaki MX2 signing’s arrival delayed until Gillman

Debut of All-Japan champion Haruki Yokoyama now set for later next month.

Image: Foremost Media.

Japanese champion Haruki Yokoyama’s debut in Penrite ProMX has been delayed until round three as the Empire Kawasaki signing continues to complete a compulsory hotel quarantine period.

Yokoyama arrived in Australia last week and is undergoing two weeks of quarantine in Sydney, now due to join the factory-supported team at Gillman on 31 May.

It was initially hoped that the two-time and current All-Japan MX2 Championship winner would be able to debut in Canberra this Sunday, however, Yokoyama’s later arrival into the country will instead see him on-track from round three.

“We are planning to get out of quarantine on the 6th of May, so will start riding after that,” Yokoyama explained. “Luckily I got a bigger room while in quarantine, so I can jump rope, balance ball, core training, little bit of running and other training.”

Yokoyama said it has been a challenging week in the confines of a hotel room upon arrival, but looks forward to experiencing the country once able to: “14 days quarantine is tougher than I thought. I can’t wait to go outside, breathe fresh air and see Australia.”

As part of a program to further develop his craft in the Australian championship riding the new Empire Kawasaki KX250 in MX2, Yokoyama is eager to get down to business late next month.

“I am looking forward to competing with the fastest MX riders in Australia,” he added. “One of the main reasons I came to Australia was to learn more and improve my skills on and off the motocross track.

“I also wanted to give a quick thank you to all my sponsors and Kawasaki Heavy Industries for giving me the opportunity to race in the Australian series.”

Honda, AMA, and American Flat Track Mourn Dick Bugsy Mann

Among his bazillion other two-wheeled achievements, the legendary Dick Mann was the man who put Honda on the map, really, at the 1970 Daytona 200.

Honda Press Release:

Statement of Condolence on Passing of Dick Mann

Following Monday’s passing of Dick “Bugsy” Mann at the age of 86, American Honda today honored the versatile racer.

A true Renaissance man, Mann was noted for his adaptability as a rider, and for the longevity of his professional motorcycle-racing career, which included charter membership in the exclusive Grand Slam Club (for riders who earned Grand National wins in road racing, short track, TT, half-mile and mile competition), two AMA Grand National Championships and a bronze medal for Team USA in the 1975 International Six Days Trial. According to Racer X Illustrated, Mann even scored a win at the first AMA-sanctioned professional motocross race. Those successes came with a variety of brands, but the Utah native’s primary tie with Honda centered on a single race—the 1970 Daytona 200.

It was Honda’s first factory effort in the legendary endurance event, with a four-rider project aboard CR750 machinery (the racing version of the now-iconic CB750 four-cylinder, which had started production just a year earlier). Conversely, Mann (then 35) had a long and relatively successful history at the race, though victory had eluded him to that point.

After launching from the front row of an all-star starting grid, Mann eventually secured the lead, then preserved the bike in the race’s latter stages to score a 10-second win over Gene Romero, with Don Castro third. In the process, Mann ran a record average race speed of 102.697 mph. It was Honda’s first AMA National Championship race win, and it established the CB750 at the top of the performance hierarchy. (Over four decades later, Motorcyclist magazine would name it the Bike of the Century.) As such, the victory was significant not only for Honda, but for its American subsidiary.

“For a Japanese company with its first, completely unproven big bike, it was hard to top that,” Bob Hansen, then American Honda’s National Service Manager, is quoted as saying in Aaron P. Frank’s book Honda Motorcycles.

“Hansen prepared the machine, and I rode it as best I could, just as I was contracted to do. That was it,” said the humble Mann in the same book.

Mann, who would back up the Daytona 200 win the following year aboard a BSA, was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1993, and he is a charter member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

“Everyone at American Honda sends their heartfelt condolences to Dick Mann’s family, friends and fans,” said Bill Savino, Senior Manager of Customer Engagement at American Honda. “Dick tallied a number of accomplishments over the course of his long career, but he’ll always hold a special spot in our hearts for the role he played in proving that Honda motorcycles could perform with the very best.”

AMA Press Release:

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and Racing Legend Dick Mann Passes

Mann, a two-time AMA Grand National Champion, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Dick “Bugsy” Mann, one of the most versatile racers to ever throw a leg over a motorcycle, passed away on April 26 at the age of 86.

Mr. Mann, born June 13, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah, was a two-time AMA Grand National Champion (1963 and 1971), and became best known for being the first person to achieve a motorcycle racing Grand Slam, which involved winning across all five types of circuits included in the Grand National Championship: road racing, TT, short track, half-mile and mile. When he retired from racing in 1974, Mann had 24 national victories, which — at the time — placed him second in all-time wins within the AMA Grand National Series.

While Mann got his racing start in scrambles, he soon got hooked on turning left on dirt ovals, and after some time learning his trade, headed to the professional racing circuit in 1954, turning expert in 1955. He achieved his first national win at the Peoria TT in 1959, quickly establishing himself as an elite racer in the series.

Mann also helped pioneer the sport of motocross in the U.S., competing in several of the early AMA professional motocross races in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Perhaps Mann’s most fulfilling national win was his victory in the 1970 Daytona 200 aboard the then-new Honda CB750. He’d been racing the Daytona 200 for 15 years and finished second three times, and in 1970 finally got to the top step of the podium, holding off rising stars and future Hall of Famers Gary Nixon and Gene Romero, as well as former world champion and Hall of Famer Mike Hailwood. That win wasn’t just Mann’s first victory at the 200, but the first time a Honda had won an AMA national.

Despite retiring from professional racing in 1974, Mann returned to his trail-riding roots in 1975, qualifying for the United States International Six Days Trial team, competed for the U.S. on the Isle of Man, and brought home a bronze medal.

Beyond being a legendary racer, Mann’s mentorship of the next generation of American racers and future Hall of Famers like Dave Aldana, Mert Lawwill and Kenny Roberts, was just as important.

In 1995, Mr. Mann was presented with the AMA Dud Perkins Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.

Look for more coverage of Mann’s legacy and career in future issues of American Motorcyclist.

Progressive AFT Press Release:

Honoring Motorcycle Racing Legend Dick Mann

AMA Pro Racing joins the motorcycle community in mourning the loss of the great Dick Mann. Mann passed Monday at 86 years of age.

The winner of two Grand National Championships, Mann was touted as one of the greatest to ever compete in various motorcycle racing disciplines. Mann is best known for being the first person to ever win all five types of circuit included in the AMA Grand National Championship: short track, TT, half-mile, mile and road race.

Mann continued to contribute to the legacy of motorcycle racing by influencing some of the greatest names in flat track including Gene Romero, Gary Nixon, Mert Lawwill, Kenny Roberts and Dave Aldana.

Mann was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.

Progressive American Flat Track will observe a moment of silence in Mann’s honor during its opening ceremonies at Saturday’s event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
