Dad’s Army, George & Mildred bike for auction

You stupid boy, get on your bike and check out this Brough Superior outfit used in the hit comedy TV shows Dad’s Army and George and Mildred.

The 1933 Brough Superior 1096cc 11-50hp and Cruiser Sidecar is heading to the Bonhams annual Spring Stafford Sale at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford on 27-28 April 2019.

The TV star outfit is expected to fetch up to £80,000 (about $A150,000).

Dad’s Army

It was used in 1972 in season five, episode 12 of Dad’s Army titled “Round and Round went the Great Big Wheel”.

Other bikes used in the series from 1970-77 include a Matchless G3L in the same episode as above and a BSA M21 in season seven.

George & Mildred

When the 1933 Brough Superior outfit was finished fighting off Mr Hitler’s invading forces, the bike was then featured heavily in George & Mildred (1976-79).

Its biggest starring role was in the opening credits.

We won’t tell you the punchline to the opening scene.

Suffice to say Mildred is once again less than impressed by George!

Before the Brough wound up on the “idiot box”, it started life as a works entry for the formidable ISDT (International Six Days Trial) in 1934, winning a coveted gold medal.

It is one of only 308 built and has been owned by a family for more than 50 years.

However, it will not expected to be the superior bike at the auction.

It includes several modifications to improve reliability and practicality, including an anti-theft switch and an electrical generator concealed behind the gearbox.

The high-quality sporting motorcycles were built in Nottingham by George Brough from 1921.

Every Brough Superior was essentially a bespoke motorcycle, built to the customer’s individual requirements and famously earning the British company the nickname ‘The Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles’.

A succession of famous customers rode Broughs, including T. E. Lawrence – better known as Lawrence of Arabia.

MotoGP 2019 Season Preview

February-April time is the traditional start to a number of racing series around the world, as the winter weather beginning to fade and race tracks becoming usable again. With this in mind, the 2019 MotoGP Season has just begun, with the first race of the season in Qatar. The season will run through to mid-November, with the final race being run in the Spanish city of Valencia on 17th November. These 9 months will see the riders and their teams travel to 16 different countries, over 19 races to battle it out for the MotoGP championship titles.

The 2019 MotoGP season will span all continents (except Antarctica), travelling as far south as Australia, as far west as Argentina, as far east as Japan and as far north as the Netherlands. The championship will also return to Thailand after the inaugural race in the country won “GP of the Year” in 2018.

Rider Lineup

With such a strong line up amongst the 22 MotoGP riders this year, it will be a closely-fought battle for the title. The retirement of Spanish rider Daniel Pedrosa at the end of the 2018 season left a space at Repsol Honda; he will be replaced by 3-time MotoGP champion, and fellow Spaniard, Jorge Lorenzo. Although he only has 3 titles to his name, Lorenzo has also finished the season in second place on a further three occasions. With 47 wins to his name from 189 starts, he wins 25% of his races on average, so expect him to pick up a solid number of victories this year. Joining Repsol Honda, Lorenzo joins fellow Spanish rider Marc Marquez: between the two of them they have won 8 of the last 10 MotoGP world championships.

At just 26, Marc Marquez is one of the most successful motorbike racers in the world. He has won 5 world championships at the top MotoGP level, winning all but one titles between 2013 and 2018. The only year he didn’t win, 2015, he was beaten by his new teammate. Marquez has 44 wins from 109 starts, meaning he’s won around 40% of all his races. Based on the dominances that these two riders have shown in the last decade, expect sparks to fly as they battle it out to prove who is number 1.

Valentino Rossi

At 40 years of age, Rossi is one of the oldest riders on the grid. He holds 7 MotoGP titles, with only fellow Italian Giacomo Agostini holding 1 more title than him. Rossi is also the only rider in history to win at least one championship in four different classes (125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP). Since his dominant years in the 2000s, Rossi hasn’t won a title for a decade, although he did come second in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Whilst he certainly isn’t favourite to take the title this year, only a fool would count out Rossi this early on.

MotoE

2019 is set to be the inaugural season of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup. It is a new class of motorbike racing that uses motorcycles that are powered only by electric motors, making it the two wheeled equivalent to the FIA’s Formula E championship for single seater car racing. However, unlike Formula E, MotoE will follow the main MotoGP championship for five rounds in Europe, holding support races on the same weekend like Moto2 and Moto3. Unfortunately, a fire broke out at the Jerez race track in Spain during a test session, with all 18 bikes destroyed in the fire. Whilst MotoE has confirmed the championship will still begin in 2019, it has not yet announced a revised calendar as it is expected replacement bikes will not be ready in time for its planned first race on 5th May.

Vale God Squad founder Rev Smithy

Riders have been invited to celebrate the life of Rev Dr John “Bullfrog” Smith, the founder of the God’s Squad CMC, radical preacher and long-time social justice campaigner.

“Smithy” passed away from cancer at home on 6 March 2019 with his wife of 51 years, Glena, by his side.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday (23 March 2019) at 2pm at the Wave Baptist Church in Ocean Grove, corner of Wallington Rd and Lake Ave.

He even addressed the National Press Club on 5 August 2009, telling the press why the commonly called “anti-bikie laws”, wouldn’t work.

Rev Smithy was also an author and was known in professional speaking circles as the “Blues Preacher: Motivational Speaker, Doctoral Researcher  of Cultural Anthropology, Author, Advocate, Social Commentator, Biker, and Unorthodox Evangelist.”

Many knew him as “Bullfrog” because he was “the loudest noise in the pond” says his wife, Glena.

Smithy documentary

His life story is told in the documentary film simply titled “Smithy”.

God’s Squad CMC formed in the late 1960s, but expanded under Smithy’s leadership from 1972.

“He has spoken around the world, making friends of like-minded crusaders such as Bono and Jimmy Carter. God’s Squad has also gone global with chapters now in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Norway, Finland, Germany, Ukraine, Netherlands and the USA.

“Across four frenetic decades, Smithy set up several flourishing community churches with associated welfare arms; completed a doctorate focussing on cross-cultural studies, corporate culture and globalisation; wrote five books; and with his wife, Glena, had three children  and seventeen grandchildren.”Rev Dr John Smith Smithy

York Motorcycle Festival adds adventure

The ninth annual York Motorcycle Festival in Western Australia is adding some adventure and celebrity to its events this year on Sunday 14 April 2019.

Festival Director Peter Woods says the number of new attractions planned for the free event would help attract more than 6000 people.

“This year we are presenting a big focus on adventure hike riding, Peter said.

“Adventure motorcycling is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people opt for taking their bike off road,” he says.

“We are going to celebrate everything to do with adventure bikes and riding, and hopefully inspire riders to get out and give it a go.”

Helping to inspire riders will be Charley Boorman’s sidekick Billy Ward, or Billy Biketruck as he is known.

we met Billy when he joined Charley several years for a motorcycle tour to the Flinders Ranges and he is an extremely funny and entertaining speaker.

He’s also a very competent adventure rider who has recently returned from a filming trip through Afghanistan with Claudio von Planta who filmed Charley and Ewan McGregor in Long Way Round.

“It started – as so many good stories do – with excessive alcohol consumption, and ended up with a trip through a war zone,” Billy says of his Afghan trek.

“Though standing on the front line in Mosul surrounded by military of one type or another, listening to the coalition jets above made me ponder ‘What the feck am I doing here?’.

“An incredible journey into the Middle East with Claudio opened up my eyes to many things — political, social, economic, power and control. Our legacy, if we have one should be our understanding. My story is about how I fell into this adventure and how wonderfully good and bad, people can be.”

Billy will tell his story at the festival and present some videos and photos of his trip in what he calls an exciting, funny and sad story, with only a little bit of nudity!

Catch Billy at the York Mill on the Saturday at 3pm, and Sunday at 1pm.

Free York festival

The family-friendly free festival includes the usual Mt Brown vintage hillclimb, show and shine competition, vintage collective markets, children’s bike rides, displays of new bikes and products, and the Harley-Davidson family concert in Peace Park from 4pm.

Aussie stunt rider Lukey Luke will stage stunt shows burning up South St on his new BMW F800R on the Sunday and champion trials rider Neil Price will demonstrate his amazing skills.

Motorcycle festival and HOG rally in Walcha

A “freak show” of motorcycling will combine with the return of the national Harley Owners Group (HOG) rally in Walcha from November 15-17, 2019.

The Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles is being organised by Inside Line Events International who was behind the proposed TT events for either the Oxley Highway or the Sunshine Coast.

Founder David Rollins says those events have not been completely shelved, but they have given birth to this new event.

“We developed a good relationship with the people of Walcha in that time, we’ve earned their trust and now we want to repay it,” he says.

“The town is providing us with first-class facilities so that we can stage an event to remember.”

Among the attractions for the weekend will be a “Hell Climb” hillclimb, custom show, flat-track exhibition racing, stalls, music, outdoor cinema, trade show, globe of death, donuts and burnouts in a closed-off arena.

HOG will have guided rides and HOG members will lead off the Thunder Rally.

Punters will be invited to have a go at the flat track like Brisbane’s Dust Hustle event on a purpose-built track on vacant land next to the town’s racecourse.

“The Freak Show of Motorcycles will be like the Summernats for motorcycles,” David says.

“We’re expecting about 5000 attendees a day for the three days of the event.”

National HOG rally to return in 2019

HOG members should be glad to see the return of their national rally.

It was last held in 2015 at Tamworth and followed by open Harley Days rallies at Wollongong in 2016 and 2017.

HOG members were unhappy with the open format so there was no 2018 national rally.

Now the national HOG rally will return at Walcha to run alongside the Freak Show which is described as a festival of motorcycles of all types.

Harley-Davidson Australia customer experience manager Gaz Luxmore says the partnership between the Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles and Harley-Davidson is “a perfect way of bringing together different riding communities and incorporating the national HOG Rally”.

“The lovely, motorcycle friendly town of Walcha and the fantastic roads of central NSW will create a magnificent backdrop for a truly unique and spectacular event,” he says.

Walcha was chosen for the event because it sits at the crossroads of some of the best motorcycling routes in NSW taking in the Oxley Highway, New England Highway, Waterfall Way and Thunderbolts Way.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson says Walcha is “known for being popular with motorcycle tourists”.

The rally will be held in the Walcha racecourse and sale yards with various levels of camping right up to five-star “glamping”.

“All accommodation has been booked out in Walcha already, but there is still heaps in Armidale and Tamworth. Plus we will have on-site camping options from standard tents to Lawrence of Arabia style,” David says.

Harley Owners Group spokesman Andrew Kidd says Walcha is a “reasonable size town with good facilities”.

“Much like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the surrounding towns will be more than able to handle the volume of riders coming to the event,” he says.

“The local roads are renowned as some of the best riding roads in the country so come along and enjoy a great event and some fantastic roads.”

David says the one ticket will gain access to all areas and sites that Freak Show Festival of Motorcycles has to offer.

Tickets go on sale at the end of March and David says they will be “competitively priced”.

Event website, Facebook and Instagram are now online.

David says they have major sponsorship support from Harley-Davidson Australia and the NSW Government’s major events agency, Destination NSW.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall says the motorcycle event will deliver more than $1.7 million in visitor expenditure to the region.

Indian riders head to Cooly Rocks On

Indian Riders Motorcycle Group members from around Australia will head to the nostalgic Cooly Rocks On Festival in Coolangatta from June 5-9.

Indian Motorcycle Australia spokesman Christopher Gale says the Coolangatta festival is a “national gathering at a preexisting event which complements our brand”, rather than a traditional motorcycle rally.

Chris says more details about the IRMG involvement at Cooly Rocks On will be released to members soon.

“It’s still a work in process,” he says.

Cooly Rocks On is an annual festival of nostalgic music, dancing, cars, motorcycles and fashion from the 1950s to ‘70s.

Indian Motorcycles is a sponsor at this year’s event which has in the past been sponsored by Harley-Davidson.

The event attracts tens of thousands every year to the Gold Coast.

IRMG was formed in 2015 and buyers of new Indian motorcycles have since been given free membership.

“A large proportion of our customers join IMRG and continue to renew their membership,” Chris says.

Members receive a gift pack including a special t-shirt, badges and patches.

When it was formed in 2015, brand manager Peter Harvey said the group would not have chapters and presidents.

“We want to keep it fairly informal, but it will depend on how the members want it to go,” he told us.

The Cooly Rocks On gathering follows other major national events to which IRMG members have been invited.

A highlight was the 2016 “Ride to Alice” for the Finke Desert Race. Among the riders was Cold Chisel guitarist Ian Moss. The ride aimed to raise awareness for the annual Black Dog Ride which Indian Motorcycles has sponsored in recent years.

Members have also been invited to other major events such as the opening of the Perth dealership.

Mostly IRMG members ride together at dealership level.

Oil in the Blood custom bike film

A two-hour feature film on the worldwide custom motorcycle phenomenon titled Oil in the Blood is coming to your computer and/or TV screens soon.

Australian custom builders and Sydney’s Throttle Roll custom motorcycle festival are featured in the film.

It was directed by life-long biker Gareth Maxwell Roberts who tells us he is “currently speaking to distributors to secure a release date”.

“It’s most likely to be a digital release. We are looking to secure completion finance, either through investment or sponsorship.”

It follows the recent release of a similar film about the custom motorcycle scene in Australia, called Handcrafted.

Gareth is a former racer and a founding member of the Bike Shed club in London.

He has been filming for the past three years with producer Lucy Selwood.

Riders invited to Ulysses Road Safety Forum

Riders will be able to get expert safe-riding tips, legal advice and guidance on safety gear from three of the top experts in these fields at the Ulysses Club The Road Safety Forum.

Ulysses road safety chairman Dave Wright says the expert presenters are Tim Conboy of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, Kenn Beer of Safe System Solutions and Dr Liz De Rome of Deakin University and Motocap, the world’s first rating system for motorcycle clothing protection.

“This will be an informative forum and, as I know these presenters personally, also a very entertaining couple of hours, “ Dave says.

The forum is open to Ulysses Club members and the general public who attend the Annual Rally Open Day on Thursday February 28, 2019, at the Mornington Racecourse, Victoria.

Forum cost is $15 for adults, children 5-16 years $5, under five years free.

“Tim will be giving us all the latest of our legal rights as motorcycle riders and what they have been fighting for on our behalf,” Dave says. 

He provided the following details on Kenn and Liz. 

Kenn is a specialist road safety engineer and accredited trainer with 18 years of experience in road safety in Australia, the USA, Asia and New Zealand.

During his time at VicRoads, Kenn held a variety of positions including Senior Road Safety Engineer, Motorcycle Safety Coordinator, Team Leader Road Safety Projects and Manager Program Development.

Kenn is recognised as a world leader in motorcycle safety infrastructure and has had roles advising the Australian, New Zealand, Philippines and Colorado Governments on the subject.

While at VicRoads Kenn spent years managing the Motorcycle Safety Infrastructure Program. In this time, over $25 million were invested in Victoria on infrastructure improvements to specifically reduce road trauma for motorcycle riders. 

Kenn is a licensed rider, accredited trainer, assessor and Senior Road Safety Auditor. In 2017, Kenn led a team that won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly training package.

Dr Liz de Rome has worked in motorcycle safety research and strategic planning for almost 20 years. Liz developed the first Australian motorcycle safety strategic plan for the Motorcycle Council of NSW including their unique website to provide riders with evidence-based information about motorcycle safety.

Her Gear Study was a world-first cohort study of motorcycle crashes to investigate the effectiveness of motorcycle protective clothing. Her results established strong benefits in injury protection but also exposed high levels of failure with many garments found to be not fit for purpose.

Liz has been a long-time advocate for a star rating scheme for motorcycle protective clothing and has led and now manages the Australian and New Zealand Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program – MotoCAP. Her other work includes the Good Gear Guide and the development of Victoria’s new motorcyclists’ graduated education and licensing scheme (M-GLS).

Liz is Senior Research Fellow, Motorcycle Safety at Deakin University in the Institute for Frontier Materials. She is a member of the National and State Executives of the Australasian College of Road Safety and the US Transportation Research Board sub-committee on Motorcycles and Mopeds.

Silent auction for dumped motorbikes

“Someone’s trash could be your treasure,” Wagga Wagga says on its Facebook page about a silent auction for a bunch of rusted motorcycle parts.

And they very well could be, even though they look like rusted waste. To some collectors they could be just what they need to finish a resto.

According to council, the large range of vintage motorbike frames and parts were dumped at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.

They include some manufactured by AJS, BSA and Ariel.

“If this has got you revved up, then head to the Tip Shop from Friday 8 February to Sunday 10 February between 8am to 4pm,” the post says.Silent auction for dumped motorbikes

Silent auction

They will be offered for sale in what’s called a silent auction.

Silent auctions are held without an auctioneer. People usually place their bids on sheets of paper or online instead.

However, there will be no picking through the scraps as it’s an all-or-nothing auction.

Massive MV Agusta collection for sale

One of the largest known collections of MV Agusta motorcycles will go up for auction on Saturday (February 9, 2019), including nearly every production model since 1945.

Almost 100 motorcycles and even scooters from an unnamed Italian family will go under the hammer at the Retromobile Show in Paris.

Retromobile says the bikes, which include production models, factory prototypes and racers, could sell for as little as €3000 (about $A4800) to much as €250,000 ($400,000).MV Agusta

Many of the bikes were built by MV legendary Agusta racing manager Arturo Magni.

The family collection was started by the current owner’s uncle.

He worked in the family’s MV Agusta garage and raced the bikes in the Giro d’Italia and the Milan-Tarento races.

He bought the bikes when they were worth very little and had to rent a disused factory near Monaco to store the collection.

Most of the bikes were restored by ex-MV Agusta mechanics with no thought to the cost.

All are in running condition and have certificates of conformity issued by the MV Agusta museum.
