Wayne Rainey back on track after 26 years

Wayne Rainey says it “made me feel young again” to hop on a specially adapted Yamaha R1 recently after being sidelined for 26 years by a crash that left him paralysed from the waist down.

The three-time world champion and long-time sparring partner with five-time champ Mick Doohan was asked by Yamaha if he would like to take part in the Suzuka Sound of Engine event in Japan next weekend (15/16 November 2019).

Yamaha has prepared a special R1 with a hand-shifter, grippy saddle and clips to hold Wayne’s boots on the pegs.

Wayne tested the bike at California’s Willow Springs Circuit last week and couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.

“I had a blast,” he says.

“It made me feel young again.”

Wayne Rainey’s fateful crash

Wayne, 32, was leading the 1993 Italian Grand Prix at Misano when he slid off the track into the gravel and was hit by his bike.

He broke his back, punctured a lung and was left paralysed from the middle of his chest down.

Wayne had not ridden since until his recent R1 test.

“It was an easy crash because it stepped out and I fell off the side of it,” later said of the crash.

“I was like sliding with the bike across the track but when I went off the track I hit a curb. It kind of set me up in the air then I landed in the gravel trap it had like speed bumps in it for the F1 cars and at that time that’s what we were using in motorcycles.”

“Now all the sand traps are smooth but sometimes it takes a big incident to get something changed.”

Wayne’s Marlboro Team Roberts YZR500 was a constant challenger to Doohan on his Rothmans Honda NSR500.

Wayne leads Mick in 1992 at Catalunya

“Mick and I had some good races and I respect him as a rider,” he once said.

“With Mick you know he’s never going to give up. That’s great in many ways, but it can also get you into trouble because you never back off. You have to be careful, but you have to win.”

Wayne won three consecutive 500cc World Championships between 1990 and 1992.

Despite not being able to ride since the crash, Wayne has remained a strong supporter of motorcycle racing and is President of the US-based MotoAmerica series.

Two riders in NSW and Queensland crashes

One rider has died and another seriously injured in separate crashes in NSW and Queensland overnight.

Blacktown collision

In NSW, a 22-year-old man from Lalor Park died at the scene of a collision with a Toyota utility in Blacktown, western Sydney, at 8.30pm (9 November 2019).

The collision occurred at the intersection of Sunnyholt Road, and Main Street.

The 52-year-old male driver from Lalor Park was uninjured and taken to Blacktown Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Officers from Blacktown Police Area Command established a crime scene and are investigating.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Our condolences to the rider’s family and friends.

Police are calling for witnesses or motorists with dashcam video to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.

Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.

Queensland fatal

A 42-year-old male rider has suffered serious internal injuries after falling from his motorcycle about 6pm in Drayton, Toowoomba.

Members of the community rendered first aid to the man prior to the arrival of emergency services.

Paramedics transported the man to Toowoomba Hospital before he was later flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Our sincere best wishes to the rider for a full and speedy recovery.

Despite Queensland Police appealing for witnesses and dashcam video, their official media release says “the rider lost control while attempting to turn a corner”.

The unfortunate statement is presumptuous and may suggest to the public that riders are reckless and don’t deserve motorists’ consideration.

Such statements are all too common by police.

There could be many causes for the crash such as road conditions, medical problem, stray animals, another vehicle, etc.

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout broke through to clinch his maiden SX1 victory in the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship at Wollongong’s third round.

It was a dominant display from three-time defending champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing) in the opening main event, the number one charging to victory after leading from start to finish.

Clout overcame teammate and third place holder Dan Reardon (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) halfway through to claim second, while the top five was completed by Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing) and Josh Hill (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy).

Positions six to 10 were taken out by Henry Miller (Raceline KTM Thor), Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki), Cody Dyce (SB Motorsports Suzuki), Lawson Bopping (Empire Kawasaki) and Jayden Rykers (SB Motorsports Suzuki).

Clout took advantage of an early stall from Brayton – who secured the hole-shot – to claim victory in main event two, holding off pressure from Hill, who dropped down the order after a mistake late in the race. Reardon capitalised to secure second ahead of an amazing third for Dyce.

Brayton charged back to fourth, followed by Hill. Metcalfe was sixth, as the top 10 was completed by Bopping, Long, Evans and Dylan Wood (KTM).

Main event three saw Dyce and Evans go down in the opening stages, as Clout stormed a second-consecutive race victory over teammates Reardon and Hill.

Brayton was an uncharacteristic fourth, finishing ahead of fellow Penrite Honda Racing rider Metcalfe. Todd Waters (Husqvarna) improved for sixth, followed by Long, Miller, Jesse Dobson (Husqvarna), and Bopping.

Clout was joined on the overall podium by Reardon and Brayton, the three-time champion still holding a three-point advantage over Clout in the standings. The next stop on the Australian Supercross Championship is scheduled for 16 November at Auckland in New Zealand.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing has extended its contract with Zach Osborne for an additional year, taking him through the 2021 season.

Osborne, who recently represented Team USA at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), has two 250SX East titles to his name along with a 250MX outdoor championship, and completed his rookie premier class campaign this year with a number of podium results.

“I’m very grateful to continue my relationship with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing,” said Osborne. “We’ve had some very successful years and I’m looking forward to more.

“I’ve truly enjoyed being a part of this program since the revitalization of the brand started back in 2015 and it feels like just yesterday that I joined the team. We have a great group of people and I enjoy going racing with them every weekend.”

JGRMX Suzuki confirms Savatgy alongside Martin for 2020

Image: Supplied.

JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing has confirmed Joey Savatgy will join the outfit for the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross and Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross championships, while Alex Martin will fulfil his multi-year deal in the 250 category.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming season with Joey and Alex,” said team manager Jeremy Albrecht. “Joey has achieved very good results over the past few years, and I expect him to have a break-out year in 2020. He impressed us in every test session on the RM-Z450, and he is extremely motivated.

“Alex returns for his second season with the squad, and I couldn’t be happier. A-Mart made big gains in supercross this past season and scored multiple outdoor podium finishes, so it will be fun to share in his progress.”

Savatgy will make his debut aboard the RM-Z450 this weekend at the Paris Supercross before racing the S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne.

Aesthetic Upgrades For Husvarna’s 701 Line

Husqvarna’s Vitpilen 701 and Svartpilen 701 share quite a few similarities, and since coming to market in 2018 and 2019, respectively, have lived up to the hype generated by their unique looks. Since both are still relatively new to the market, it comes as no surprise that both get minor updates for the 2020 model year.

The Vitpilen 701 gets a set of CNC-machined footrests along with a new blue and white color scheme. There’s also a pair of sharp-looking 17-inch spoked wheels on the new edition and a new pillion seat cover.

The 692cc single has proven to be a lot of fun in the saddle, with instant acceleration that pulls all the way to redline. The chromoly steel trellis frame and WP suspension work together in harmony to provide a firm, yet forgiving ride. The fit and finish were a high point during our first encounter with the machine, and the new colorway looks quite striking compared to the previous silver and black.

Similarly, the Svartpilen 701 gets new CNC-machined footrests, a fresh coat of paint, and new 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels.

Altered ergos and styling give the Svartpilen 701 its own feel and character, despite sharing much of its internal construction with the Vitpilen 701. Our tester recently described it as making “a strong case as the best single-cylinder streetbike currently in production”, so we forgive Husqvarna for leaving well enough alone for the time being. Plus, the bronze and black 2020 colorway is quite fetching.

Fluid Funnels Needed In Every Garage

Keep your garage floor free of oil stains with the help of any of these funnels.
Keep your garage floor free of oil stains with the help of any of these funnels.Kenny Luo

It’s too easy to spill oil all over the garage floor when performing routine motorcycle maintenance. That’s why it’s worth investing in a few good funnels to get the job done cleanly and professionally. There are plenty of funnel options out there, but here are a few we found that could help you get the job done whether you are the penny pincher, the funnel collector, Harley-specific tinkerer, or the professional shop mechanic.

Nopro Plastic Funnel (Set of 3)

Three funnels are included in the Nopro plastic funnel set.

For most non-professional, DIYers, these funnels make it easy to get fresh oil into the vehicle simply and effectively. Different mouth/stem sizes like 4 inches/0.5 inch, 3.5 inches/0.4 inch, and 2.5 inches/0.3 inch are included in this bundle, so no matter the job, big or small, you can take it on with the large-, medium-, or small-sized funnels. For storing, the funnels can be nested together or one can use the loops on the side to hang them in the garage.

Bar and Shield riders can maintain their Harley-Davidsons like the pros with this three-piece set from MoKo. Because the maintenance doesn’t end when you drain the oil, the set includes a 9-inch crankcase fill funnel, a primary case oil fill funnel, and a drip-free oil filter funnel. These are made from high-quality ABS plastic that is sturdy and corrosion resistant. While the transmission crankcase fill funnel can work on Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha models as well. The primary case oil fill funnel is compatible with 1999–2000 Evolution 1340, 1999–2017 Dyna, 1999–2017 Softail, and 1999–2015 touring and trike Harley models. The drip-free oil filter funnel is also limited to 2004–later Sportster XL, 2008–2013 XR, 1999–2017 Dyna, 1999–2016 touring, and 2009–2016 trike models.

While this funnel/tank combo may require a lift to be of any use, this is still a great all-in-one option for oil changes. You can either extract the waste using the venturi-vacuum extracting system or simply use gravity. Situated on two 3-inch swivel casters on the front and two 6-inch rear wheels you can move the tank around your garage with ease. The 15-inch-diameter funnel will be sure to catch any oil dripping from the sump and you can adjust its height between 45 inches up to 75.5 inches for vehicles on lifts.
