74hp LC4 engine

At the heart of the 690 Enduro R is the latest version of the LC4 engine; a powerplant with origins 30 years ago in Hard Enduro KTM machines, which has since benefited from constant evolution, including experience learned from racing single-cylinder engines on and off-road in world championship competition.

The 690 Enduro R also ties into KTM’s commitment to producing high performance ‘monos’ with their distinctive character and abilities. More power and torque were logical progressions – 74hp and 73.5Nm – but this comes complete with refined delivery; improved smoothness, better response and fuel efficiency.

High end chassis with WP suspension

Under the new seat and fresh bodywork – both optimised for style and better movement on the bike – is an all-new chassis. Designed to be confidence-inspiring with ease of handling, the powder coated chromium-molybdenum-steel trellis frame is joined by an enlarged fuel tank capacity of 13.5 litres (+1.5 l), offering better than ever range.

Equipped with lightweight, CNC milled hubs mated to high-end 21in and 18in rims fitted with grippy and enduring Mitas E07 tires, both ends of the KTM 690 ENDURO R are fully adjustable WP XPLOR suspension, with performance akin to competition offroad bikes, while also offering strong road performance.

KTM Enduro R
2019 KTM 690 Enduro R

Specially adapted from the EXC range, the WP XPLOR fork provides a split-damping system and is bolted to the main chassis’ lightweight sections of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes via highly rigid forged triple clamps. The WP XPLOR shock absorber, connected to the single-piece cast swingarm by linkage, produces a progressive suspension character and high resistance against bottoming out.

Top shelf electronics

Allowing riders to get the most from the 690 Enduro R multi-terrain machine is an array of top-level electronic systems, including lean angle sensitivity braking and traction functions, and two different ride modes – Street and Offroad. These can be switched from the handlebar to provide different behavior from the throttle response and traction control systems.

KTM Enduro R
2019 KTM 690 Enduro R

Offroad ABS allows rear wheel lock-up and reduced ABS on the front wheel, while motor slip regulation (MSR) is an engine brake control designed to prevent rear wheel lock-up – even on low grip surfaces – perfect for street riding. The addition of the Quickshifter+ produces clutchless up and downshifting through the six speed transmission.

Is KTM really interested in buying Ducati?

The latest rumour about the sale of Ducati is that Austrian manufacturer KTM may be interested in buying the iconic Italian brand.

It comes from one interview with KTM CEO Stefan Pierer in German magazine Speedweek where he expresses he is interested in Ducati.

Reports across the world now say KTM will be a likely bidder for the company.

That’s an understandable conclusion since Pierer Industries AG, a company controlled by Stefan, did buy Husaberg and Husqvarna.

But what did Stefan really say?

Ducati is the Ferrari of the motorcycle industry. Of course, having such a brand in our group would be interesting. It is not a question of price, but it is about the topic: When does everyone realise the situation they are in.

It’s a bit of a stretch to go from someone expressing he would be interested in ownership to actually getting the wallet out.

Although, Stefan does suggest his wallet is fat enough and price is not an issue.

As for the “situation”, he is probably referring to the global slump in motorcycle sales. Perhaps he suggests more brand mergers to make companies more economically viable.

But is Ducati even up for sale?

Three years ago, VW hinted it may sell Ducati to help recoup multi-billion-dollar emissions scandal debts.

Since then, the debt has escalated even further. However, VW has continued to make record profits and ameliorated a lot of the debt.

At one stage, VW went so far as to accept informal bids on Ducati.

Several companies were interested and some even offered bids.

They included: Indian automotive giant Eicher Motors which owns Royal Enfield; American motorcycle and powered recreational vehicle company Polaris Industries; investment firm Bain Capital; private equity fund PAI; the Italian Benetton family through former Ducati owner Investindustrial; and even Harley-Davidson.

Then VW withdrew their unofficial sale offer.

Since then, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali and VW board members have issued conflicting statements about whether the company is up for sale.

Meanwhile, Ducati has recorded eight consecutive years of record sales growth and looks set for its ninth.

It certainly would be a worthwhile investment.

KTM look back on successful 2018 NZ Adventure Rallye

KTM NZ Adventure Rallye

KTM riders explore Northland and the Coromandel

It was always going to be a feat to top last year’s Southern Alps Rallye, yet trading up epic mountains for breathtaking coasts – and throwing in an Ultimate Race challenge for added entertainment – resulted in a truly remarkable week of adventure for the 2018 KTM New Zealand Adventure Rallye riders.

NZ KTM Adventure Rallye
KTM NZ Adventure Rallye

For six days and over 1700km, 101 KTM adventure riders, 3 pillions and 25 staff were treated to the best tracks the Northland and Coromandel regions had to offer, through way of expert local route coordinators Barry Reiher, Mike Johansen, Shaun Prescott and KTM Adventure Ambassador Chris Birch – who just so happens to be a Coromandel local.

NZ KTM Adventure Rallye

Throw in special guests, V8 Supercars legend Greg Murphy, 5-time American National Enduro Champion Russell Bobbitt as well as riders from 13 different nationalities, and the third annual KTM NZ Adventure Rallye was set to deliver an outstanding experience.

NZ KTM Adventure Rallye

Starting at the iconic Bay of Islands, riders explored the Northland region for three days with highlights including: stopping by Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s oldest living Kauri tree; riding East Beach with it’s pure white silica sand; visiting the lighthouse at Cape Reinga, the northern most accessible point of New Zealand; traversing the zig-zagging Te Paki Steam, next to the great Te Paki Dunes to access the iconic Ninety Mile Beach; and exclusive access to outstanding sandy pine forest tracks and private farms overlooking stunning coastal waters.

NZ KTM Adventure Rallye

A final send-off from Northland at The Butter Factory in Whangarei saw plenty of laughs as stories started to emerge – the winner being an epic tale of a drowned 1090 rescued from a 10-foot-deep hole to one side of a water crossing. Riders were then off through Auckland to Thames on Day 4 for the Coromandel leg, as well as the start of the Ultimate Race Qualifications.

A new initiative, introduced by the KTM Factory for this year’s KTM Adventure Rallye events, sees two lucky participants from each Rally around the world win the chance to compete against each other in the KTM Ultimate Race at the 2019 Merzouga Rally in Morocco.

The qualification challenges kicked off in Thames with a bike lift, wheel change and timed special test. A fantastic atmosphere had all the Rallye riders cheering on the participants, with the top 10 going through to the next day’s challenges.

Coromandel lived up to its hype on Day 5 and delivered an outstanding Rallye experience, with the route winding along the iconic coastal Port Jackson road to the tip of the Peninsula, where a fundraising roast lunch was provided by the Colville School and over $2000 was raised by riders.

NZ KTM Adventure Rallye

The afternoon’s action was provided by another Ultimate Race Qualification challenge, a timed special set against the dramatic backdrop of Port Jackson bay. Rallye riders were able to watch the action before partaking in a special breakout route around the Port Jackson farm, which offered breathtaking ocean views against endless green hills.

And with the final day over the range to Whangamata, even though the route had to be amended due to the amount of rain in the region, it was still all smiles as riders rolled into the final coastal town for a night of awards, laughs and reminiscing about an unforgettable week.

The Ultimate Race Qualifications proved to be an outstanding addition to the event, with best mates Kevin Archer and Elliot Kent taking out the honours to represent New Zealand in Morocco.

KTM New Zealand would like to thank all of the Rallye riders who participated, as well as the staff, land owners and helpers who made it possible. With special mention to wonder tech Harry, who not only dived in to save the 1090, but also brought it back to life to finish the Rallye!

Greg Murphy

“What a way to see the country! The 2018 KTM Adventure Rallye took me places I have never been and probably wouldn’t have visited, which being I am a kiwi, is a bit embarrassing. The scenery was breathtaking and the variable terrain covered was amazing, exactly what the KTM Adventure Bike range was designed and built for. A huge congrats to the whole KTM organising team who delivered such a memorable week.”

KTM’s new MotoGP riders try to adapt to RC16 at Valencia

2019 MotoGP Testing with KTM

After the poor weather across the nineteenth and final round of 2018 MotoGP in Spain, Red Bull KTM were able to count on sunnier and brighter conditions for their first work towards the 2019 FIM World Championship with a host of new riders, including two that have made the jump across from Tech3 Yamaha machinery to the KTM RC16.

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport Director

“Today was the start of a new phase for us in MotoGP and it was impressive and emotional to see four KTMs pulling out of the pitlane these days. We had a great end to 2018 and the work did not stop on Monday to get everything and everyone ready for Tuesday and today. It was another special moment to see the Tech 3 guys warming up those RC16s and making their first steps with us. It was a big effort to put it all together for these two days so thanks to everyone involved. On the track we went about our work. Pol carried over his confidence from Sunday while Johann came into the team and started to learn the bike and the guys around him. The same could be said for Tech 3. We’ll keep pushing now until next week and then come out strong when we can run on the track again next year.”

MotoGP Valencia KTM Johann Zarco
Johann Zarco

Mike Leitner, Red Bull KTM Team Manager

“It was quite an interesting test. We brought Johann into the team and we’d been looking forward to that for quite some time. The target of the test with him was to get him familiar with our bike and how it works and reacts. He tried many different things with the settings. He also has a new Crew Chief and some other team members so it was a good start. He crashed today but luckily nothing big and it showed him some limits and understanding. We’ll make some analysis this week and hope to make another step in Jerez. Pol gave some good feedback about the new parts we had for him and we have some exciting potential for a new direction. The job these days was firmly towards 2019 and overall we’re happy.”

MotoGP Valencia KTM Pol Espargaro
Pol Espargaro

Pol Espargaro, still elated after his run to a brilliant third position in the Valencia rain, notched 35 laps on Tuesday (before more untimely showers cut the afternoon short) and 47 on a dry Wednesday to focus mainly on electronics and other key points of the ’19 KTM RC16. The Spaniard showed top ten pace when pushing for a quick lap.

Pol Espargaro

“It has been a positive test: you can always take the positive parts of whatever you do. We tried many, many things, especially electronics. We had a nice test, even if we had a problem going for a really fast lap in the end. The team is happy. We still have much to do but we have Jerez in a few days. Last year we were quite good there with a test after the race. I have good memories. The bike has changed much since then and we still have some changes to make. It is good to have more fast riders on the bike like Johann, the test riders and the young guys at Tech 3. They just need time and experience.”

MotoGP Valencia KTM Pol Espargaro
Pol Espargaro

Across the garage Johann Zarco made his eagerly awaited Red Bull KTM debut and spent both days feeling his way around the motorcycle and altering the characteristics to suit his style. The former double Moto2 World Champion and 2017 Rookie of the Year clocked 86 laps in total. He suffered two small crashes on Wednesday but otherwise profited from his initial taste of the Austrian machinery.

MotoGP Valencia KTM Johann Zarco
Johann Zarco

Johann Zarco

“I wanted to improve my lap-time more today but we could not do it. I can really feel the potential of the bike but we still need to get the speed. It was a shame to have two crashes but I didn’t have any injuries and it helped to understand things about the bike and what I might have to change with my riding style. Step-by step. I’m building up this adventure. We are working on corner entry feeling and to find a direction but we improved and I felt I could play with the bike. I’m already thinking about what changes I need to make. Anyway, it was pretty nice to get on that bike and something so different that I’ve discovered in MotoGP until now. Even all the colours, the suit: it was exciting!”

MotoGP Valencia KTM Johann Zarco

Another significant sight in Valencia was the all-black KTM Team Tech 3 KTM’s of Hafizh Syahrin and Miguel Oliveira. The Malaysian is beginning his first full MotoGP pre-season while the Portuguese is one of four rookies in the premier class for 2019. Both were also busy with their acclimatisation.

MotoGP Valencia KTM Hazifh Syharin
Hafizh Syahrin

Hafizh Syahrin

“Overall, we had a decent test. I didn’t look at the lap time these two days, but tried to feel good on the bike, to get used to it and to understand the electronics. On the first day, we didn’t touch anything on the bike but this afternoon we changed some things on the front and the rear, which was positive. Later today, it was quite cold and we used the medium tyre. I had a small crash in turn 10, but I was in a good shape and had a good rhythm to understand the bike. We try to continue working hard. I hope we have some great weather in Jerez and aim to improve with every session.”

MotoGP Valencia KTM Hazifh Syharin
Hafizh Syahrin

Miguel Oliveira

“We did much more laps than yesterday and just continued to work on the bike. Toady we started to touch some areas after we had the same bike throughout the day on Tuesday. Now we were able to make some changes. Because everything is new, it took the team a bit of time to make these changes and also to adapt my comments from what I wish to have from the bike, so it’s a learning curve for everyone in this particular situation. So far, it has been positive.”

MotoGP will now move further south and to Jerez to continue testing on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th November and the last track days before the winter period.

790 Adventure leads KTM assault

KTM Australia says the new 790 Adventure and R models will arrive here in June 2019, several months before its major new mid-mid-sized competitor, the Yamaha Ténéré 700.

The 790 Adventure is not the only new product from KTM on display at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan.

They also feature the new 690 SMC R (arriving in March 2019), 690 Enduro R (April), 1290 Super Duke GT (February) and SX-E 5 mini electric trail bike (December).

The latter is a KTM version of the Husqvarna EE 5 electric minicycle, tapping into the Euro frenzy over electric motorcycles.

790 AdventureKTM 790 Adventure

The much anticipated 790 Adventure is powered by KTM’s new-generation LC8c 799cc in-line twin-engine with 70kW of power (95hp) and weighing in at only 189kg.

KTM claims 400km of range from the 20-litre tank. And it should all be smooth riding with two balancer shafts and long service intervals of 15,000km.KTM 790 Adventure

Suspension is, of course, WP, with 43mm forks, 200mm of travel, 233mm clearance and an 850mm seat height, compared with the Ténéré 700 at 880mm.

The engine sits in a CroMo steel frame with an open-lattice swingarm.

Finally, a manufacturer has provided an easy-to-adjust handlebar. It can be set in six different positions with a 30mm adjustment range making it comfortable no matter what size the rider and whether standing or sitting.

Instruments are in a 5-inch TFT display with a wide range of configurable information. The display varies according to light and the rev counter blinks to indicate when to shift.

KTM 790 Adventure

Electronic rider aids include traction control, cornering ABS, and an off-road mode with a smooth throttle response.

Other tasty features are LED lighting, steering damper and hefty 320mm twin discs with four-piston radially mounted callipers.

Factory accessories include an up/down quickshifter, heated grips and cruise control, as well as the usual protection parts and luggage.

KTM 790 Adventure R

The R model adds longer-travel 240mm suspension, Karoo 3 dirt tyres, 48mm WP XPLOR forks, upgraded shock and different bodywork.

KTM engineers have tweaked the 1301cc 75° V-twin LC8 engine from the 1290 Super Duke R and revised resonator chambers, titanium inlet valves and a new mapping.

The result is only an kilowatt of power to 130kW, while torque is actually down 3Nm to 141Nm.

KTM has also added and up/down Quickshifter.

Electronic rider aids include lean angle sensitivity for braking power and traction control and different ride modes – including the optional ‘Track’ mode.

There is a new aerodynamic windshield developed in a wind tunnel with multiple height positions and improved one-handed adjustability.

The new 6.5-inch TFT full-colour screen is claimed to be visible in direct sunlight and has a variety of menus chock full of info.

KTM MY RIDE smartphone connectivity allows the rider to use phone functions (navigation, phone, music) via an app through the bike’s screen.

Cosmetically it now has a Duke family appearance and a new LED headlight with daytime running light and tank spoiler-mounted LED cornering lights.

The latest generation WP semi-active chassis has “deeper analysing sensors” to adjust to surface conditions with a switch to select damping for Comfort, Street and Sport.

There are two new storage compartments on the side of the tank for a mobile phone, wallet, etc. One side has a USB charging socket.

Heated grips come standard.

The 690 Enduro R returns in 2019 with several updates.

One of the best for long-range touring is the addition of two balancer shafts to smooth out the LC4 single.

It also now gets the super-duper fully-adjustable WP XPLOR suspension.

There are two changeable rider modes (off-road and street), cornering ABS and traction control.

Styling is now sharper and slimmer, with a redesigned seat.

Also returning for 2019 is the R supermotard version with an advanced electronics package and 6kW more power to 55kW and 73.5Nm of torque.

It also features two balancer shafts and dual-spark cylinder head.

KTM promises improved rider ergonomics, multiple electronic rider aid systems and new WP suspension.

KTM 790 Adventure R | 95hp | 88Nm | 189kg | June 2019

After seeing first hand the lengths that KTM have gone to in order to make the dimensions of their new 75-degree offset crank-pin 790 cc parallel twin as minimalist as possible, and then sampling how strong and linear the performance of the 435-degree firing interval engine is myself over many kilometres of fanging the 790 Duke, I am dying to see just how well this engine will translate in to the 790 Adventure, but unfortunately we are going to have to wait until its June 2019 arrival to sample it!

KTM 799cc Parallel Twin – LC8c

KTM quote 95 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 88 Nm at 6600 rpm for both 790 Adventure models.  This is 10 hp down on the 790 Duke, but the claimed 88 Nm torque is marginally higher while at 6600 rpm, that peak twist arrives 1400 rpm earlier than the 790 Duke.

The incredibly small engine packaging (only fractionally larger externally than the 375cc single in the 390 Duke), gives KTM the room to fit a long swingarm and more space for the fuel cell.

The small engine dimensions also allow for plenty of ground clearance while maintaining a reasonable seat height.

Clearance on the 790 Adventure is 233 mm while the 790 Adventure R has 263 mm of clearance.

Both are also claimed to tip the scales at 189kg without their 20-litre fuel cells being topped up.

Thus we can extrapolate that the 790 Adventure weighs in at 204kg fully fuelled and ready to ride.

Again those slim and compact engine dimensions have played their part in keeping the fuel low with the tank extending down alongside the engine, similar to what we once saw in the 990 Adventure models some years ago.

KTM claim a fuel range as high as 450 km from the new bikes and while this might be possible when being nursed, realistically a rider will more likely able to count on a 350+ km range in most touring duties.

KTM Adventure Brakes
KTM 790 Adventure and Adventure R feature radial mount four-piston calipers and 320 mm discs up front and 260 mm rear

Changing a ride mode changes the throttle response, the traction control level and, depending on the mode, the peak power.
