Aprilia launches lightweight RS660

Aprilia seems to have faith in the supersport segment with the final unveiling of its lightweight RS660 to be followed by a naked Tuono version next year.

Ever since the RS660 concept hit the EICMA stage in Milan a year ago, there has been a lot of interest in this bike in a segment that is diminishing.

Lightweight funAprilia RS660 lightweight

To many, supersport means lightweight and a good power-to-weight ratio.

The Aprilia RS660 won’t disappoint.

It is powered by two cylinders from a Tuono/RSV4 1100 engine as a 660c parallel twin.

Weighing in at 169kg with 100hp (75kW) of power, that’s a formula for fun!

But Aprilia doesn’t just see it as a track weapon, but also as an everyday commuter.

In fact, its five riding modes spell it out: Commute, Dynamic, Individual (we imagine that’s a customisable mode), Challenge and Time Attack.

There is not a lot of information available yet, so we can only speculate on what all that means.

It has adjustable Kayaba suspension, a double aero fairing and smartphone connectivity with navigation display on the instruments.Aprilia RS660 lightweight

Lightweight twins

It will be the first of a new platform of lightweight 660 twins.

The first will be a Tuono naked version like the concept presented at EICMA. It is slightly downtuned at 96hp (71kW).

There will also be a restricted version that may come in under Australia’s LAMS rules for novice riders.

And, who knows, maybe it will be followed by an adventure, cafe racer or scrambler version.

2020 Yamaha MT-10 Preview

Yamaha is really putting an emphasis on the MT-series these days and the MT-10 just happens to be the flagship of its Hyper Naked lineup. It’s big, bad, and downright nasty plus it’s a blast to ride.
Yamaha is really putting an emphasis on the MT-series these days and the MT-10 just happens to be the flagship of its Hyper Naked lineup. It’s big, bad, and downright nasty plus it’s a blast to ride.Yamaha

The 2020 Yamaha MT-10 is the flagship model of Yamaha’s Hyper Naked street motorcycle segment that includes the new MT-03, MT-07, and the MT-09. As the leader of this self-proclaimed army of darkness, the MT-10 is equipped with the exciting 998cc crossplane inline four-cylinder engine derived from the high-tech R1 superbike. The similarities don’t stop there either.

The 2020 Yamaha MT-10 features the powerful 998cc inline four-cylinder engine with crossplane crankshaft technology developed for the YZF-R1 superbike. Tuned specifically for the MT-10, this engine develops strong low- to mid-rpm torque.

The MT-10 chassis is designed around the lightweight Deltabox aluminum frame, again similar to the R1, along with fully adjustable 43mm inverted KYB fork and piggyback rear shock. Brakes are equally impressive with standard ABS assisting a pair of radial-mount four-piston calipers gripping large 330mm front rotors. Lightweight alloy wheels and a low-slung exhaust help the MT-10 offer excellent agility in the corners while remaining locked to the road under acceleration. We’ve ridden the MT-10 enough to know that this is a streetfighter that provides an exciting ride no matter where you find yourself.

The MT-10 features a range of systems powered by YCC-T ride-by-wire throttle system that provides precise throttle control.

But it is the look of the MT-series that Yamaha is hoping you will embrace. Sure, the performance is there but it’s the sinister-looking, futuristic stance of the big Hyper Naked that seems to be the appeal. An angular front light pod houses a pair of projector beam headlamps and LED running lights while providing spectators a memorable first impression as it approaches them from the dark seedy underbelly of Anytown, USA.

The MT-10 comes with standard cruise control, D-Mode allows the rider to choose their preferred level of engine response, while the Traction Control System (TCS) helps maximize available traction based on road conditions.

Yes, it is a bit of play on the streetfighter segment, but you cannot deny that Yamaha is having a great time developing and marketing the MT-10 and its smaller cousins. It is a hooligan bike with the requisite combination of awesome power, nasty looks, and high-tech hardware and software that make this motorcycle such an intriguing option. It ticks all the boxes, has that dreamy crossplane crank howl from its open-class engine, and will be available in two colors for the 2020 model year: Ice Fluo (white) and Matte Raven Black with an MSRP of $12,999.

Binder: “To be where we are is a gift”

KTM’s well-documented struggles in the opening exchanges of the 2019 Championship saw Binder fail to see the podium until Assen – Round 8. However, from there, Binder’s form has been sensational. Podiums in Germany, Great Britain and Thailand have been coupled with victories in Austria, Aragon, Australia and Malaysia as Binder now sits P2 in the Championship. Speaking after the race at the Sepang International Circuit, the 24-year-old was beaming. And understandably so. The 2020 factory KTM rider could hardly believe how far he and the team have come from their opening part of the season troubles, as he now aims to finish his Moto2™ career on a high in Valencia before hopping onto the RC16.

Ducati Reveals Two Scrambler Concepts At EICMA 2019

Similarly, the DesertX is clearly aimed at the adventure market, and Ducati has strayed even further from the stock Scrambler design. Claudio Domenicali explained in his presentation that the DesertX will make use of the 1,079cc L-twin engine platform, and its design is meant to invoke the spirit of ’90s rally bikes, specifically the Cagiva Elefant. And its shrouds, windscreen, fuel tank, seat, rear rack, tailsection, tires, and engine protection all suggest this bike will be a blast off road.

“I want to continue for many years, this is my family”

“The first time I tried the bike in Valencia, in the preseason test, also in Jerez, with last year’s bike, I was quite quick. My confidence was ok. With the 2019 bike, even if it was a very nice year for Marc, because he got the record points, he rode unbelievable. But the rest of the riders have struggled with the front a little bit. On the straight it’s very good to have extra power but on the corners, there is some little problem that we are trying to solve for next year and we will see at the Valencia Test.”
