Coronavirus prompts cancellation of Seattle Supercross

13th round of the Supercross series to be rescheduled

Increased restrictions on large-scale events in a number of Washington counties due to the coronavirus has prompted promoters of Monster Energy Supercross to cancel Seattle’s stop on 28 March, while it’s understood the 13th round will be rescheduled.

The decision comes in accordance with the governor’s restrictions on group gatherings in King County amid coronavirus concerns, which has banned events with an attendance of over 250 people.

The Seattle round is the first Supercross venue to be impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, with a number of global motorcycle events, including the MXGP World Championship, already cancelling or postponing events.

SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki announces new-look 2020 line-up

Tierney and Ellis to contest the MX1 and MX2 categories respectively.

SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki revealed a new-look line-up for the 2020 MXstore MX Nationals and Australian Supercross Championship, confirming the signing of Connor Tierney and Brodie Ellis.

Tierney, 21, will pilot the Suzuki RM-Z450 after campaigning in the premier class outdoors last year, where a health issue saw him complete just the back half of the season.

“It’s great to be a part of the SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki team,” Tierney commented. “It’s been a really smooth transition to the RM-Z450, I feel like the bike’s handling really compliments my riding style well.

“We’ve been working hard with the team and Steve from SPMX to get everything dialled in for me. I’m healthy, feeling fit and can’t wait to head to Horsham.”

Tasmanian Ellis will graduate to the MX2 category in 2020 aboard the Suzuki RM-Z250, the 19-year-old coming off a promising year in MXD that saw him claim multiple podium results.

“I’m excited to step up to MX2 this year with the support from SB Motorsports Ecstar Suzuki team and Cycleworld Suzuki,” Ellis said. “The bike and team have both been awesome so far, I’m really looking forward to round one and getting the season started.”

SB Motorsports team owner Scott Brewster shared his excitement in welcoming Tierney and Ellis to the squad for the 2020 race season, and believes that this year will see continued growth and successes in their second year as a Suzuki-backed effort.

“We are very pleased to be able to finally announce that Connor and Brodie will be joining us this year,” Brewster stated. “As a team, we had a great first season with Suzuki last year with a string of podium finishes and we aim to build upon that this year with the boys.”

The MX Nationals kicks off on 4-5 April at Horsham in Victoria.

Call for less slippery paint on roads

If you’ve ever crashed on slippery painted road markings, you will be glad to hear that an Australian company is helping make our roads safer for motorcyclists with a coloured surface.

SmarterLite’s OmniGrip is not paint, but a coloured aggregate which has the same grip levels as the surrounding tarmac and wears at the same rate.

It is used for bicycle and bus lanes and pedestrian crossings by councils and road authorities in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Main Roads Western Australia.

Slippery when wet

Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd Research and Evaluations Lead, Dr Tana Tan, says it should be considered for use on popular motorcycle routes where a loss of friction between the motorcycle tyre and road surface or painted areas/lines can result in a crash.

The company has audited thousands of kilometres of Australian roads for specific motorcycling hazards, one of which is slippery paint markings.

“Most road markings use polymer-based paints which are slippery in the wet and can increase the risk of a crash for riders,” Dr Tan says.

“We’re not as concerned about centreline and edge lines being painted with thermoplastic line marking as compared to line markings which riders are likely to ride over. You shouldn’t be riding on centre and edgelines anyway,” he says.

“But we should consider high friction markings areas such as bus lanes in states where it is legal for motorcyclists to ride in the bus lane and near stopping areas.

“It (OmniGrip or other high skid resistance pavements) doesn’t need to be used everywhere, but should be considered on popular motorcycle routes where a loss of friction between the motorcycle tyre and road surface can result in a crash.

“We have to be smart with where we use it because it is more expensive than thermoplastics but we also need to consider the long-term costs as thermoplastics are not necessarily as durable as OmniGrip.”

Lifecycle cost

SmarterLife Director External Affairs Dave Jones says the lifecycle cost of their product is lower than other products.

“The proven safety benefits are the durability of its skid resistance and retention of its colour, which outlasts cheaper products,” he says.

“OmniGrip CST lasts five to eight years, depending on traffic. OmniGrip HF, using calcined bauxite, can last more than ten years.

“In heavily trafficked locations, painted products may be renewed as often as every two years, and they can be of concern to vulnerable road uses like pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcycle riders because worn painted surfaces can be slippery in damp, wet or dusty conditions.”

OmniGrip Direct uses a propriety resin to bond a range of synthetic and natural aggregates to a wide range of road surfaces. OmniGrip CST uses specially prepared coloured Australian recycled glass to achieve durable coloured surfaces where safety is critical.

Where colour isn’t required, but skidding and stopping distance are important, OmniGrip HF (High Friction) uses calcined bauxite for skid resistance.

VicRoads data says that High Friction Surface Treatments using calcined bauxite reduce overall crashes by 40% and wet-weather crashes by 50%.

Overseas, studies have found crash reductions in wet weather up to 80%. OmniGrip Direct recommends it for intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as winding roads where there is a risk of loss of control approaching and on sharp bends.

Day two of Jerez MotoE test topped by Granado

Day two of Jerez MotoE test topped by Granado

Pramac Racing’s Hook winds up 10th on the timesheets.

Image: Supplied.

Eric Granado (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) went fastest for the second-consecutive day of FIM Enel MotoE World Cup testing at Jerez, with a 1m47.546s enough to see him edge out nearest challenger and 2019 Cup winner Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE) by just 0.098s.

Alex De Angelis (Octo Pramac MotoE) completed the top three, into the 1m48s as the timesheets tightened up behind the duo at the top.

Granado and Ferrari were, therefore, the only two riders to dip below the 1m47s barrier on Wednesday, with the Brazilian finding around eight tenths on his previous best as the grid continue to get to grips with a few updates for 2020.

Xavier Simeon (LCR E-Team) was fourth quickest on day two in Andalucia with a best of 1m48.294s, moving up from having ended Tuesday outside the top five, with 2019 Cup runner-up Bradley Smith (WithU Motorsport) shuffled down a couple of places to take P5 on day two, his quickest a 1m48.451s.

Niki Tuuli (Avant Ajo MotoE) continued his return from injury and surgery in P6, the Finn impressing again and just getting the better of Niccolo Canepa (LCR E-Team) on Wednesday. Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) slipped down to eighth on day two.

Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP), meanwhile, took ninth. The Swiss rider was once again the fastest rookie, and ended the day just ahead of Australian Josh Hook (Octo Pramac MotoE), who completed the top 10.
