Modular Backpacks For Motorcyclists

Motorcyclists standing on a hill
Not everything can be stored on the bike itself, sometimes you have to be the one carrying the load and not the bike. MOLLE backpacks are an option.Karel Kramer

MOLLE backpacks are most commonly seen on, but not limited to, tactical personnel. MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment), however, can be used by motorcyclists as well. When one backpack could be adapted to carry more or less gear, it is understandable why you often see riders with this style of pack. Motorcycle riders tend to need storage options since not everything needed for a ride can fit into pockets, under the seat, or in saddlebags (if you even have them). From Nelson-Rigg gear to hydration packs, many have implemented the MOLLE webbing for attaching additional MOLLE-compatible pouches to increase storage. Here are a few selections of MOLLE backpacks to choose from.

Nelson-Rigg Hurricane 40L Backpack/Tail Pack

Nelson Rigg 40 Liter Waterproof Backpack
Strap it down or sling it on, the Nelson-Rigg gear with the MOLLE panel makes for an adaptable adventure pack.Nelson-Rigg

With a removable MOLLE panel that can also be flipped to show the waterproof map, this backpack just shines in the rainy weather with its adventure-readiness, not to mention the waterproof tarpaulin material and seams that are electronically heat welded together. The MOLLE-styled panel allows you to clip on additional items to the back. Within the 40-liter capacity compartment you can fit extra riding gear or tools for your journey, and if you have fuel bottles, the two mesh side pockets can hold those as well. Getting the pack compacted down is made possible with the purge valve and rolltop mouth.

Lancer Tactical Hydration Backpack

Lancer Tactical MOLLE Attachable Hydration Backpack
Unlike Dos Equis’ motto, you don’t want to stay thirsty on a ride, therefore a hydration pack is a key item to have.Lancer Tactical

Going for a ride on your dirt bike or dual sport? You need to take a mobile hydration station with you to ensure you don’t get thirsty on the trails. Now while this pack primarily focuses on storing a 2.5-liter bladder (sold separately), you can attach other items using the MOLLE-compatible straps. The pack is constructed out of 600-denier polyester material.

Seibertron MOLLE Backpack

A multitude of clips cinch many elements of the Seibertron backpack together.Seibertron

While any determined rider can clip his/her helmet using a carabiner clip and D-rings onto the MOLLE webbing of any backpack, this is designed to hold a full-face helmet in a designated helmet pouch. The 900-denier polyester material is claimed to be waterproof, however the zipper is not. Something to keep in mind when you take it with you on your ride. The expandable main compartment has an interior mesh enclosure for smaller gear. There is also a middle compartment with zippered interior small gear pouches, as well as a small exterior zippered compartment on the outside. It can be used as a hydration backpack, but you do need to purchase the 2.5-liter hydration bladder separately.

Champions were crowned on the sixth and final day of racing at the 2019 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship in Gillman, South Australia.

Continuing his run of perfect results, Alex Larwood earned the Junior Lites 15 Years crown after capturing his sixth straight final win over Blake Fox and Cameron Torpy, while in the 125cc 15 Years category, Fox emerged with the title as Levi Rogers won the final moto over Larwood and the newly-crowned champion.

Brad West rode dominantly to the Junior Lites 13-U15 Years championship with a commanding win in final six, where he comfortably defeated Deegan Mancinelli and Jackson Camilleri. The 125cc 13-U15 Years title came down to the wire, eventually won by Liam Atkinson. Ryan Alexanderson won final three over Atkinson and Hunter Collins.

A string of victories granted Ben Novak the Mini Lites BW 14-U16 Years crown, the New South Welshman winning final six over Collins and Jake Kowal.

The Mini Lites BW 12-U14 Years division was a thriller, where Ryder Kingsford was awarded the title on countback after equalling on points with Connor Towill. The third final was one by Byron Dennis ahead of Braden Plath and Cody Kilpatrick.

In another exciting tussle, Kayden Minear pushed through to the lift the Mini Lites SW 9-U12 crown, the Western Australian making last lap pass for the championship. The final outing was taken out by Hixson McCinnes over Jet Alsop and Minear.

Charli Cannon was unstoppable across the Junior Lites 13-U16 Years Girls and Mini Lites 12-U16 Years Girls classes, picking up both titles after dominant week. In the Junior Lites, she defeated Madison Healy and Taylah McCutcheon in the sixth final, while in the Mini Lites, she won ahead of Taylor Thompson and McCutcheon.

Minear earned his second title of the week in the 65cc 10-U12 Years class while also winning the finale, and in the 65cc 7-U10 Years class, Cooper Ford emerged with the title as Cooper Downing won the final outing. Mason Brown secured the 50cc Division 2 7-U9 Years title after winning all six of his finals.

Heat, dust storm and bushfire warning for riders

Heat, a dust storm and bushfires are expected over the next few days across much of the nation, making life difficult for riders.

Temperatures are expected to reach the 40s across much of South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Queensland on Sunday and Monday, causing a return of bushfire conditions.

Before heading off, riders should check online for bushfires in Queensland and in NSW on the RFS or SES websites.

Police and emergency services are urging all motorists, in particular vulnerable motorcyclists, to heed warnings, avoid danger areas and stay hydrated.Dust storm

Dust storm

The weather bureau is also predicting winds to pick up on Sunday and Monday, creating dust storm conditions over the parched outback.

Heatwave conditions are bad enough, but add in a dust storm and it makes dehydration a bigger risk for riders exposed to the elements.

Last year, a heatwave in Western Australia cost the lives of a rider and hiker from dehydration and in 2017, a 30-year-old father died from dehydration after riding in the forests of the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The dangers of becoming dehydrated in a heatwave are headaches, disorientation, heat stroke, muscle cramps, loss of concentration, drowsiness and nausea, each of which can cause crashes.

And the problem is that once any of these symptoms becomes evident, it is already too late to do anything about it.

The dust storm will also limit riders’ vision and clog your bike’s air filter, so remember to clean the filter after your ride.

Dehydration motorcycle gear Riders dies of dehydration in heatwave dust storm

Tips to avoid dehydration in a heatwave:

  1. Don’t drink too much alcohol the night before a ride. It has a diuretic effect which means it causes you to urinate more water than you take in which means you are losing fluid. And you can’t counteract that by drinking lots of water because most of it will go out in your urine. Obviously, don’t drink alcohol while you are riding!
  2. Start drinking water as soon as you wake and keep sipping water right up until you get on your bike. It takes about half an hour for water to reach your muscles. Guzzling water just before a ride is not good as it can make your stomach to cramp. The Royal Flying Doctor Service which has attended dehydrated riders in the Outback, recommends carrying 10 litres of water per day! Read their Outback riding tips here.
  3. Wear ventilated motorcycle clothing. Leathers may protect you better in a crash, but they create a “microclimate” which impairs your ability to lose heat. As a result you will produce more sweat to decrease your core temp. Instead, wear a flow-through jacket. There are heaps of options on the market. Make sure they have vents in the back so the air flows through. Also, loosen the sleeves so you get plenty of air on your wrists which have a lot of blood vessels close to the skin to effectively cool you down. However, be aware that a flow-through jacket cools you down because it is drying the sweat off your skin which can lead to dehydration. A set of Ventz up your sleeve will also keep you cool as air flows up your arms. However, don’t be fooled by your level of coolness as ventilation can also cause you to loose more water through evaporation. So you still need to keep drinking plenty of water.

BUY Ventz motorcycle jacket vents NOW

  4. Don’t be tempted to remove your jacket in the heat! Exposed skin may feel cooler, but that’s because the sweat is evaporating quicker, but that is just making you more dehydrated. And while your skin feels cool, you’ll be tricked into staying in the sun longer which leads to sunburn. That also leads to dehydration because your body needs water to repair and renew damaged skin.
  5. Get a Camelbak or other brand of water-dispensing unit so you can continue to take small sips of water while you are riding. I’ve seen riders on GoldWings and other big tourers with cup holders so they can take slurps from a water bottle. That’s obviously not as safe as the hands-free Camelback option, but anything is better than nothing. Some people don’t like Camelbaks because the water gets hot, but the temperature of the water doesn’t affect dehydration.Camelbak reduces dehydration heatwave dust storm
  6. Stop more often than usual and hang out in the shade or in an air-conditioned cafe. Since you are drinking lots of fluids, you will probably need to stop anyway!
  7. While you’re stopped, have a coffee, but take it easy. No need to swear off your favourite caramel latte, but avoid excess coffee. That also goes for caffeinated drinks such as Red Bull. High levels of caffeine have a diuretic effect just like alcohol.
  8. While having a coffee break, avoid having too many sweet cakes, donuts and muffins. Sugar can dehydrate you if it gets to very high levels in your blood. This can happen if you are a diabetic, take certain medications or have an infection or some organ diseases. Sugar causes your kidneys to produce more urine to eliminate the sugar, leading to dehydration. Likewise, don’t drink too many sugary drinks. Best to stick to plain water, real fruit juices with no added sugar or drinks such as Gatorade that replace salts and minerals lost in sweat.
  9. We’ve talked a lot about urine and it’s important that you monitor the colour. It should be a straw colour. If it’s too dark, you are dehydrated.
  10. Sweat also depletes your body of sodium and if it becomes too low, it can cause many of the same symptoms as dehydration. The average diet probably has enough sodium, but it’s good to have a little bit of salt on your meals or drink sports drinks that have a sodium supplement. However, beware of sports drinks with caffeine and sugar.
  11. Ok, I know I said there were only 10 tips, but dehydration doesn’t just occur in a heatwave. In winter, the cold can shut off the body’s thirst mechanism and trick you into thinking you’re not sweating. Meanwhile, your body is losing fluids as the air passes over your body.

Championships tighten on penultimate day of Gillman’s AJMX

Finals action intensifies as one day remains in the South Australian event.

Image: Foremost Media.

Title fights across a number of classes tightened on the penultimate day of racing at Gillman’s 2019 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship (AJMX) in South Australia.

Alex Larwood maintained his stranglehold on the Junior Lites 15 Years division, securing victories in finals four and five over Levi Rogers and Blake Fox – the duo trading positions in the fifth outing. In the 125cc 15 Years class, it was once again Larwood who reigned supreme over Fox and Rogers.

Ryan Alexanderson broke through for a thrilling victory over Brad West and Jackson Camilleri in Junior Lites 13-U15 Years final five, while Camilleri was victorious in the opening 125cc 13-U15 Years final ahead of Brock Flynn and Jack Mather. In final two, Liam Atkinson edged out Camilleri and Zachary Watson for the top spot.

Final five of the Mini Lites BW 14-U16 Years division went to Ben Novak over Hunter Collins and Watson, as the second final of the Mini Lites BW 12-U14 Years class was taken out by Connor Towill, followed by Seth Burchell and Ryder Kingsford.

Mini Lites SW 9-U12 Years final two was awarded to Kayden Minear ahead of Liam Owens and Jet Alsop following a post-race penalty to the first initial three finishers, including Alsop who crossed the line in P1.

Charli Cannon remained unstoppable in Junio Lites 13-U16 Years Girls after securing another victory in final five over Taylor Thompson and Madison Healy, while she also topped the Mini Lites BW 12-U16 Years final five, finishing ahead of Taylor McCutcheon and Thompson.

Minear was victorious in final five of the 65cc 10-U12 Years class, while the second 65cc 7-U10 Years final was won by Cooper Downing. Mason Brown won finals four and five in the 50cc Division 2 7-U9 Years class. Racing resumes tomorrow for the final day of the event.

Honda, Rever Join Forces To Help Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation has long been one of the most active motorcycle-involved charities we know of, and we’re happy to see Rever team up with it to help deserving kids.

Begin Press Release:

Honda, Rever Team Up to Benefit Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Riders could raise $10,000 through Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge

American Honda and ride-planning/tracking/sharing app Rever have challenged riders of all motorcycle brands to collectively track 250,000 miles with the app prior to October 20, 2019. If participants reach that goal, Honda will donate $10,000 to the Los Angeles Ride for Kids/Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation charity event, taking place October 20 at American Honda’s headquarters in Torrance, California.

Current Rever users can go directly to the Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge, click “Join” and start tracking every ride. Individuals not currently signed up for Rever can do so for free, join the challenge and start tracking and saving rides. People can also benefit the cause by attending and taking part in the L.A. Ride for Kids in person. Riders, kids and families will gather to check out some cool motorcycles, have a fun motorcycle ride, enjoy lunch and enter to win raffle prizes.

“Ride for Kids is all about channeling what we love to do (riding motorcycles) into a good cause,” said Chuck Boderman, Vice President of American Honda’s Powersports Division. “Rever’s app-based challenge will help increase awareness of the ride and get riders out on two wheels. This challenge will also help riders discover the joy of supporting kids in need through our daily riding adventures.”

“We are so excited about this new partnership with Honda and Rever, which will not only get more people out on their motorcycles, but also raise awareness and funds for kids with brain cancer,” said Kelly Dooley, Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Ride for Kids program. “Thank you to everyone who participates—every mile counts in our pursuit of a cure!”

“We can’t think of a better reason to track a ride in Rever than helping kids with cancer,” said Justin Bradshaw, Rever cofounder and President. “Honda and RFK have done an incredible job over the years, and we are honored to be joining them to help spread the word of such a great cause.”

Challenge Details

The Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge is based on miles tracked in the Rever app between 12 a.m. MST September 20 and 11:59 p.m. MST October 20, 2019. Rides imported from another source or rides that have been planned but not recorded, do not count. This challenge is free to join for any member of Rever, with no purchase necessary. Riders may join the challenge at any point between the start and end dates, but only rides after joining the challenge will be counted. Rides marked private will not count.

Rider safety to count in ANCAP ratings

Rider safety will become an important ingredient in cars obtaining star ratings from 2022 under the ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) ratings.

That means it will be tougher for cars to obtain a full five stars unless they have active mechanisms to detect and avoid crashes with motorcycles.

They include blind spot alerts, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and other automated technologies that steer cars away from crashing with riders.

ANCAP chief technical officer Mark Terrell says the 2022 introduction of the “Powered Two Wheeler – PTW” test target will be based on the “MUSE” project (Motorcycle Users Safety Enhancement), undertaken by Euro NCAP.

The testing used a special motorcycle dummy to simulate various common motorcycle scenarios.

Tougher ANCAP tests

Mark says a similar series of tougher tests for the detection of pedestrians and bicycles has already been incorporated in ANCAP.

“From the start of 2020, the proportion of points for pedestrian and cyclist AEB does increase – making it more likely that manufacturers will need to fit advanced systems to achieve a good star rating,” he says.

“In reality most five-star cars in 2018/19 do have AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
“The actual test scenarios and scoring for 2022 (for motorcycles and scooters) are still under consideration, so I don’t have further detail on these that I can provide at the moment.”

However, we expect they will be similarly tougher.

Hopefully this leads to safer cars on the road and will avoid the SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You) syndrome.

Mistakes To Avoid While Shipping Your Motorcycle

(Shipping article by contributor)

An automobile is indeed one of your most valuable possessions, and you cannot hand it over to someone leniently. But there are certain unavoidable situations when you have no other alternative than to trust third-party organizations to get your motorcycle transported.

If you need to transport your motorbike from one city to another, you must look up the websites offering these services. There are many car transport companies that can provide quick transportation of motorbikes as well as cars, along with simple procedures and complete assurance of security. However, you should also be proactive on your part before signing the deal and shipping your motorbike. Some of the most prevalent blunders to avoid while shipping your automobile are:

Ignoring a background check

The shipping company you choose for your bike must be registered with the Department of Transportation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration necessitates to permit them when shipping across the borders.

Before handing over your vehicle, check their unique registration numbers on government websites. If the company is not presenting you with MC or DoT number, make sure that you get the entire document authenticated in writing. Also, look out for genuine reviews of the company over the internet.

Failing to produce documents

To safely ship your motorcycle outside the city, the companies will require certain original documents like your insurance certificate and automobile registration paperwork. You may also have to present documents supporting your ownership of the vehicle. To stay out of complications, make sure to gather these documents, prior to requirement.

You should also make sure to go through the inspection report they create, after a thorough scrutiny of your bike. Keep a copy of the report with your documents, and once you receive the motorbike after shipping, run a manual check. If there are any new damages because of shipping, bring this to their notice immediately.

Keeping insurance aside

When you are finalizing the shipment, make sure that the company is providing you with proper insurance over the delivery. If required, go through their certificate and understand what sort of damages will be covered under their policy, if your vehicle faces any accident during the transportation.

If the shipping company is not providing you with any assistance, you can ask for extended support from your insurance firm. You can also purchase these additional facilities from the shipping companies, separately.

Ignoring fragile parts

Regardless of how sturdy your vehicle might seem, there remain several components that are breakable. Thus, it becomes crucial to keep these safeguarded before you send your motorcycle for shipping. Most of the time, shipping companies tend to pack the vehicle in a box container so that fragile parts don’t incur any significant damage.

These components include headlights, which can be removed and shipped separately. Ignoring this aspect can take a hit on the overall integrity of your motorbike, as these might face considerable damage during the process. It is also advised to take a picture of your motorcycle before you hand it over so that you can assess if there is any damage situation.

Hollywood Electrics Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

Electric motorcycle dealership, Hollywood Electrics is celebrating ten years of business.

Begin Press Release:

#1 Electric Motorcycle Dealership Hollywood Electrics Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

The All-Electric 2-Wheeled Vehicle Dealer Celebrates a Decade of Zero Emissions Riding and Racing

LOS ANGELES Oct. 1, 2019 PRLog Hollywood Electrics, the World’s Leading Electric Motorcycle Dealership, has announced its 10th Anniversary. The Los Angeles-based dealer is #1 in global Electric Motorcycle sales and is known for its premium product selection, custom motorcycles, and award-winning racing team.

Hollywood Electrics began as Founder/CEO Harlan Flagg’s dream of delivering electric two-wheeled vehicles that were easy, fast, and green. “As an electrical engineer and motorcycle enthusiast, Hollywood Electrics was an opportunity for me to combine my passions,” said Flagg. In September 2009, Hollywood Electrics first opened its doors and shortly thereafter became the top electric motorcycle dealer worldwide. Over the past decade, customers have logged over 1 million miles on its electric two-wheeled vehicles.

The year 2009 was a different world, with significantly fewer electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations. Battery technology has progressed, dedicated fast-charging infrastructure has proliferated, and consumer demand has increased for zero-emissions vehicles. Today, every demographic has access to EVs from Teslas to BMWs, and ride-on-demand electric scooters to rentable electric bicycles. The hope of an all-electric zero-emissions future has become a reality, spurred on by EV visionaries and a consumer market that is becoming more eco-conscious.

Alongside its #1 position in Electric Motorcycle sales, Hollywood Electrics offers a high-end product line of aftermarket parts and custom motorcycles. The Hollywood Electrics Motorcycle Racing Team tests these products on a competitive national level. The 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb inspired modification of the then-current Zero S motorcycle with a larger controller, in what would become Zero’s flagship Zero SR in 2014. The Zero FX platform was also modified as a Supermoto for the race, which would eventually become the next flagship: the Zero FXS in 2016. Race data and real-world stress testing led to the development of the Hollywood Electrics Fairing Kits that have proven their worth with the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) and its eMotoRacing Class, where Hollywood Electrics has consistently topped the podiums at locations like Willow Springs Raceway in CA, Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, and Utah Motorsports Park.

As the worldwide Electric Motorcycle community continues to thrive, Hollywood Electrics looks forward to expanding upon its success to date. Hollywood Electrics’ goal is to make electric two-wheeled vehicles as ubiquitous as the internal combustion machines they are steadily replacing. A future of clearer skies, less dependency on oil, and reduced urban congestion awaits, beginning with each individual rider’s simple choice of riding electric motorcycles.
