New suspension, styling and tech upgrades for KTM RC390

2022 KTM RC390

Seven years ago this week I was sampling the first RC390 from KTM in Italy, and if not for the plague I would be Italy again sampling this major 2022 redesign of the RC390 platform in Italy.. Bugger.

2022 KTM RC390

The suspension has received significant upgrades with WP APEX inverted open-cartridge forks complete with 30-stage compression and rebound damping adustments.

2022 KTM RC390

At the rear a WP APEX shock offers pre-load adjustment and five clicks of rebound settings.

2022 KTM RC390

The KTM RC 390 is fitted with a WP APEX rear shock absorber which offers pre-load adjustment and 5 clicks rebound settings.

2022 KTM RC390

New rims have helped shave an impressive 3.4 kg unsprung weight off the RC390 and the upgraded ByBre braking system shave another kg  while the frame is now 1.5 kg lighter also.

EURO5 updates on the liquid-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke engine with twin overhead camshafts, four valves, and electronic fuel injection have helped boost torque with the aid of a new air-box design.

2022 KTM RC390

From an electronic standpoint, the new generation KTM RC 390 sets the benchmark for the small displacement Supersport segment, boasting a selection of rider aids usually only available on bigger motorcycles, namely Supermoto ABS, Lean angle sensitive Cornering ABS and Cornering MTC, along with the optional Quickshifter+.

2022 KTM RC390

KTM MY RIDE can now also be added, thanks to a new TFT color display, which allows riders to access important information at a glance, with the added flexibility of being able to tailor the display to show what they want to see. The display also automatically adapts its brightness to ambient light.

2022 KTM RC390

The most immediately obvious update across the board is the racy styling, which sees almost every panel being redesigned, boasting race-inspired lines and two new colorways which clearly define the sporty character of these motorcycles.

2022 KTM RC390

This redesign has also been purposely done to increase the overall size of the RC 390, not only to give it a striking visual presence but also to optimise aerodynamics due to higher top speeds, thanks in part to a computational fluid dynamics design process.

2022 KTM RC390

This new design has also optimised wind and weather protection, with KTM claiming enhanced heat management by using a combination of inner and outer body panels to direct airflow away from the rider.

2022 KTM RC390

The rear bodywork has been reduced as much as possible for a more aggressive profile, but also to show off as much of the redesigned steel trellis subframe as possible.

2022 KTM RC390

The knee area has been refined to allow for easier, more fluid rider movement, being as narrow as possible with the largest possible contact area.

2022 KTM RC390

An all-new two-part cockpit and windscreen holder makes use of a cast aluminum upper area and a lower composite part that secures the headlight, while a larger fuel tank has been added for improved day-to-day riding, comfort, and fuel range.

2022 KTM RC390

The new bodywork is easily removable, with a reduced number of screws being used as well as a redesigned mounting system. This makes swapping out the street-legal bodywork for race-ready panels more practical. However, the most notable updates to the KTM RC 390 can be found underneath the new bodywork.

2022 KTM RC390

The new RC390 is scheduled to debut in Australian and New Zealand from March, 2022.

KTM Group almost double their sales in first half of 2021

Record breaking first half of 2021 for Pierer Mobility

Pierer Mobility Group has announced record breaking gains in the first half of 2021, with group revenue breaking the €1.078 billion mark, in comparison to 600 million in 2020, representing an 80 per cent increase.

That also represents an operating result of €102.6 million, compared to just €1.7 million in 2020, with motorcycle sales increasing to a total of 176,045 from the KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and Bajaj brands, or almost double the same period in 2020.

Pierer Group boasting record sales in early 2021

The bicycle and e-bike divisions likewise saw strong growth, up 25 per cent, to 53,378 units sold, with the majority being e-bikes under the R Raymon, GasGas and Husqvarna brands.

That marks a total of 215,646 motorcycle and e-bikes, up 73 per cent compared to the previous year, despite the ongoing challenges of Covid, and it’s impact on production and distribution.

In Australia KTM recorded a 64.3 per cent improvement in road sales but dirtbike sales fell by 10.9 per cent ahead of the arrival of the 2022 models, which made the overall lift in sales only 7.1 per cent when both sectors were combined.

That trend was also reflected by Husqvarna with the sister brand increasing their road sales by 40.6 per cent, off what was an admittedly low base, while dirtbike sales dropped by 23.8 per cent.

Those figures were offset by 570 sales for GASGAS after the brand was reintroduced to Australia, which compares to 2974 off-road sales for KTM and 1163 off-road sales for Husqvarna.

If taking both off and on-road sales into account across the three brands just under 6800 sales were recorded over the first half of 2021 in Australia. This equates to around 4.2 per cent of the global motorcycle sales volume for the group.

The strongest improving markets have proven to be in Latin America, with a 62 per cent increase in Colombia, 43 per cent in Brazil and 31 per cent in Argentina, with growth of 25 per cent in Europe, on the back of strong demand for motorcycles.

2022 KTM 300 EXC TPI ErzbergRodeo

The strongest European nations were Italy, Spain and France, boasting 53, 41 and 28 per cent increases respectively, with market share in Europe reaching over 11 per cent. Market share in the US between the Pierer brands also now sits at 11.3 per cent, and reaches 18.9 per cent in the Oceania region.

In India Pierer saw an increase of 59 per cent in the S2 and S3 segment, with KTM and Husqvarna reaching a market share of 6.9 per cent

Employment figures were also strong, reaching 4,888, an increase of 559 from the first half of 2020, with 80 new apprentices beginning training this year, with 200 in total in training.

Pierer Mobility also entered into a joint venture with Maxcom, in e-bike manufacturing in Plovdiv in Bulgaria, investing €40 million, with a planned capacity of 350,000 units, with commissioning due to commend in the second half of 2023.

KTM 150 EXC

With strong growth continuing, Pierer has also revised their revenue for the 2021 fiscal year, raising the guidance to €1.9-2.0 billion, up €50 million on previous predictions.

Fernandez confirmed to partner Gardner in MotoGP next year

Moto2 team-mates move up to MotoGP together in 2022

Two wins and four podiums in two seasons of Moto3 and three victories with a total of six trophies to-date in Moto2: 20-year-old Raul Fernandez will continue his climb to the peak of MotoGP with a Tech3 KTM Factory Racing saddle next year.

Raul Fernandez

Honestly, I’m really pleased with this opportunity from KTM, as much for this year as for the next. I’ve been learning a lot and enjoying Moto2 and was able to get into a position where I have this chance to enter MotoGP and for which I’m very grateful: it’s the dream of any rider to arrive to this class. Right now, the most important thing is to keep focusing on this season and giving all I have up until the last race to try and fight for the championship. If it doesn’t work out then fine, everything happens for a reason, and you have to look towards the positives. I’ve been a rookie this year and I want to close the chapter and then start again for 2022 where I’ll be looking to find a good feeling on the bike and, above all, aiming to enjoy myself.

The Spaniard, along with Australian Remy Gardner, has been the dominant force as part of Aki Ajo’s Red Bull KTM Ajo team in Moto2 after graduating from the KTM RC4 in Moto3 during 2020. He sits 2nd behind Gardner in the championship at the mid-point of the campaign and on the eve of race day at the Michelin Grand Prix of Styria.

Fernandez’ adaptation to the demands of Moto2 and his continuing fast development as a professional GP rider has helped KTM race management take the decision to elevate #25 to the premier class.

Hervé Poncharal – Tech3 KTM Factory Racing Team Principal

Finally the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing Team is ready to announce its line-up for the 2022 MotoGP season and we are delighted, proud and excited to welcome Raul Fernandez next to Remy Gardner. I think it’s going to be a very exciting 2022 season with the two of the brightest talents of the Moto2 category moving to the premier class. Even though it will be their rookie season, I’m quite sure they will quickly learn and after a few races show their potential in the MotoGP as well. Raul has definitely done an unbelievable first part of his rookie Moto2 season, something that has not been achieved in a long time. Seeing him stepping up to MotoGP next Remy makes us very excited. Although we are very pleased with this announcement we know we still have half a season to go with our current riders, Danilo Petrucci and Iker Lecuona, which I want to thank for their dedication and their never-ending constructive attitude. We really hope we can give them what they expect and what they need to finish the 2021 season on a good note. And, we clearly wish them well and best of luck for their future. It’s always painful to take a decision, easy to welcome people but always very difficult to tell your riders our relationship will come to an end. I know this is the tough part of our job. We are competitors, racers and this is part of our world. Again, we really hope we can give the best support and the best atmosphere to both, Danilo and Iker for the remaining MotoGP season.

KTM’s MotoGP wing for 2022 is set as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will field Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira, and Tech3 KTM Factory Racing will work with the rookie Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner.

Pit Beirer – KTM Motorsport Director

I’m happy to announce that Raul will move into the MotoGP class with us, and this further proves that our KTM GP Academy project is working from the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup all the way to MotoGP. We all know that Raul is an outstanding talent. His jump from Moto3 to Moto2 had some question marks but he showed repeatedly that he is an excellent rider on the bigger bike, which was our original thought and hope because he was quite tall for Moto3. Going to MotoGP so quickly wasn’t part of the initial plan but he has demonstrated that he has the potential. The Moto2 line-up at the moment with Remy is like a dream team, so to move both of them to the premier class makes it very strong and means we now have riders for MotoGP that have come through our system. We had – and still have – a similar ‘dream team’ with Brad and Miguel and now we can repeat the same story with another Moto2 line-up. If you know the guys, their background and how they work and how they feel in the KTM surroundings then it makes the whole effort stronger.

Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo)

KTM reveals RC 8C racing prototype | 128 hp | 140 kg

KTM RC 8C Racing Prototype

KTM RC 8C racing prototype

KTM have just taken the covers off their RC 8C racing prototype, a machine developed in partnership with Krämer Motorcycles and dedicated to track performance. The RC 8C boasts some impressive figures, including a 140 kg dry weight, 128 hp power figure matched to dedicated race components and a bespoke frame. The price for Australia is yet to be announced and the pre-ordering process opens later this week.

The KTM RC 8C racing prototype will weigh just 140 kg dry

The engine is the same unit seen in the 890 Duke R but with different intake and engine management systems. With the benefit of it being a production engine this means maintenance, parts availability and tuning can all be done relatively easily in comparison to most dedicated track based machines.

The engine in the KTM RC 8C racing prototype comes from the 890 Duke R

The engine will produce 101 Nm of torque from the 889 cc LC8c powerplant and benefits from a special airbox and Twin Air filter combo and incorporates a ram air intake on the upper fairing.

Akrapovič titanium muffler

Krämer Motorcycles are responsible for a built for purpose stainless steel racing exhaust which incorporates a Akrapovič titanium muffler with carbon end cap. There will be an optional 98 dBA muffler that is purchasable separately for those with stricter regulations locally.

AIM MXS 1.2 RACE dashboard and data logger

The KTM RC 8C will also run a full factory AIM MXS 1.2 RACE dashboard and data logger, including GPS integrations, with a 5″ TFT display also including data recording and totally programmable as to what can be displayed, including ECU settings engine stats and live lap info. Logged data can also be analysed in AIM RaceStudio at no additional cost.

ChroMoly steel frame and integrated fuel tank and subframe

On the chassis side of things is the dedicated race frame, a unit with adjustable 66.7° steering head angle and 98.6 mm trail, with the bike running a 1400 mm wheelbase.

Suspension is by WP, with Apex Pro 7543 close cartridge forks with full adjustability, alongside an adjustable Apex Pro 7117 steering damper, which is the same unit run by WP supported race teams.

WP Apex Pro 7543 close cartridge forks & Apex Pro 7117 steering damper

At the rear is a WP Apex Pro 7746 shock with preload adjuster and high and low rebound and compression settings, while Dymag UP7X forged aluminium wheels are run, with a 3.50 x 17 in front and 6.00 x 17 in rear, clad in Pirelli Superbike Racing slicks. Standard fitment is a 120/70 – 17 front and 180/60 – 17 rear, however a 200/55 rear can also be used.

Dymag UP7X forged aluminium rims

Brembo Stylema calipers are mated to 290 mm full-floating aluminium rotors on the front, with a 230 mm unit on the rear and Brembo two-piston caliper. Controlling the front brakes is a Brembo 19RCS Corsa Corta radial master-cylinder, with MotoGP inspired design that includes three settings – Normal, Sport and Race.

Brembo Stylema calipers on 290 mm front rotors, with a carbon-fibre front guard

Styling is based on the RC16 racer, carrying the iconic KTM styling, with a focus on easy removal and installation, ideal for trackside work, as well as incorporating crash protection for the most at risk areas when pushing the limits at the track.

Styling on the KTM RC 8C racing prototype is based on the RC16

This includes quick release GRP body panels, with a carbon fibre front fender including quick change system, and RC16 style winglets for high speed stability.

Crash protection is incorporated into the design of the KTM RC 8C racing prototype

Integrated crash protection includes crash pads on the frame, forks and swingarm, as well as on both sides of the 16 L fuel tank which is integrated into the seat unit. The tank therefore functions as rear subframe and seat as well, and includes a click-on fuel line connector for easy draining.

The fuel cap is found in the tail

On the rider ergonomics side of things, there’s CNC machined footrest holders which are adjustable across 66 mm in three steps and run interchangeable pegs. An eccentric subframe mount also allows for two seat heights, alongside ride height adjustment via length adjustment of the WP shock.

Standard foot controls are adjustable

Adjustable CNC machined handlebar clamps include laser engraved markings for easy positioning, and there’s 30 degrees of adjustment, with 25 mm of height and 30 mm of width adjustability.

The clip-on bars on the KTM RC 8C racing prototype likewise offer a wide range of adjustability

The adjustable headstock offers a degree of adjustment in each direction in half degree steps, while the fork offset can be adjusted between 26 and 28 mm.

Dani Pedrosa confirmed wildcard in Austria

Dani Pedrosa to race Grand Prix of Styria

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing test rider Dani Pedrosa will make a debut competitive outing with the KTM RC16 by entering the tenth round of the 2021 MotoGP series: the Michelin Grand Prix of Styria at the Red Bull Ring, Austria on August 6-8.

The 35-year-old MotoGP Legend retired from full time racing with 31 victories and 112 podium results from 13 seasons in the premier class between 2006 and 2018. Since 2019 he has been an integral part of KTM’s development program for MotoGP and with the KTM RC16 that made its debut at the 2016 Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana and then joined the grid on a permanent basis in 2017.

Dani Pedrosa

It’s been super-interesting to be part of this project from the beginning with KTM in MotoGP and being able to share my experience with them. Step-by-step we did the best we could and now it’s interesting again to go into a race because it gives you a different perspective compared to a normal test. It has been a long time since my last race and, of course, the mentality for a GP is very different to a test. My focus for the GP is to try to test the things we have on the bike in a race situation. I wish to understand the requests riders might have for different sessions and technical features. Watching from home I can sense the improvements in the bikes and the racing but in order to understand more about MotoGP now, the new technologies and how to race and use strategies against the others we’ll make this wildcard. It’s difficult to talk about my expectations after being so long away from competition. It might all click into a racing mentality or it might not but we’ll try to enjoy the weekend as much as we can.”

Pedrosa finished in the top five of the MotoGP championship 11 times from 13 campaigns and was a three-time runner-up. The Spaniard’s last Grand Prix was almost a thousand days ago with the 2018 event at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia where he classified 5th. He has since shared a race track with the current MotoGP field at both IRTA and private test days. Red Bull Ring will represent his first race with KTM.

The long-term Red Bull athlete will steer an adapted development version of the KTM RC16 to gain further valuable data in Grand Prix conditions.

Mike Leitner – Red Bull KTM Race Manager

It will be curious to see Dani in MotoGP again. He has been away from racing for quite a long time but it will be valuable to have him in garage at Red Bull Ring to analyze the strong and not-so-strong parts of our KTM RC16 package in GP conditions and it will give him a good indication for his testing work. Dani has had a big influence in our MotoGP project thanks to all of his experience. The company was working and pushing hard to follow his requests, along with Mika’s [Kallio]. Dani was a good reference as he retired at the end of 2018 while still at the top of the sport and we can see some of his influence in the current success of the KTM RC16. He will have a mixture of the current race bike and some small upgrades and he will have some testing to do during the weekend but we also don’t want to overload him. We want him to enjoy the Grand Prix! There are a lot of young, strong riders in MotoGP at the moment, so he will be busy but this is a good way for him to learn more and feel the current benchmark in the sport and this will help us for future testing.”
