SA1NT armoured puffer jacket

Melbourne denim riding gear company SA1NT has branched out from denim pants and jackets into nylon Cordura, releasing an armoured puffer jacket.

SA1NT famously developed a six-second single-layer denim, but has now added nylon Cordura products to their lineup.

Cordura is durable and lightweight and has reasonable abrasion resistance. It’s not race track or touring standard, but good enough for street use.

Their new stylish puffer jacket is not cheap at $600 and at that price you only get the jacket – no impact protectors.

However, you can buy D30 Ghost Armour for the shoulders and elbows at an extra $100 and D30 viper stealth back armour for $59.99.

SA1NT ecommerce manager Michael Baxter says they certified the jacket both with and without armour.

The fabric in the impact zones is rated 5.9 seconds (using CE-EN 13595 testing), but without armour the jacket has a class B garment CE-EN 17092 rating which is the third highest of the five levels of protection.

“When sold with the armour our jacket has a AA rating,” Michael says.

“Moving forward we have developed our own SA1NT armours and will start including these in most of our CE-rated moto garments.”

Deakin University Fibre Science and Technology researcher Dr Chris Hurren says that to meet the CE “AAA” and “AA” certifications, jackets must be fitted with shoulder and elbow impact protectors.

I have been riding with this stylish puffer jacket for a few weeks in changeable weather from single digits to the high 20s.

It’s not really a winter jacket as it doesn’t have enough thermal protection for comfortable riding under the low 20s. And on the one day the temperature climbed toward 30C, I was sweating because there is no ventilation.

It’s not waterproof but is claimed to have a “water repellant” coating with a waterproof zipper. I haven’t tested it out in heavy rain, but got caught in a brief shower where the jacket kept me dry.

However, a piece of paper in my outside pocket did get damp because the pocket zippers are not waterproof.

The jacket features some clever ideas such as the wind-cheating cuffs that also stop the loose sleeves from riding up your arms in the wind.

I also like the pocket tag with a catch to hold your keys or in my case to hold my earplug container.

The jacket is extra long so it covers the space between pants and jacket for better protection in a slide and to keep your lower back warm.

It sits up way too high in the front collar which rubs against the helmet buckle.

It’s only mildly uncomfortable if you are sitting bolt upright such as on a cruiser but is quite uncomfortable in any other riding position where you have to lean slightly forward.

The jacket features two outside pockets and one internal wallet/phone pocket. I would prefer at least one more internal pocket.

Some people like hoodies. They can be useful when you get off the bike, but I don’t like how they flap around and hit your helmet.

Thankfully the hoodie is easily detachable with a couple of clips and a zip.

There are no reflective materials, so it’s not really suitable for night riding.

This jacket comes in sizes small to XXXL and can be washed inside out with the armour removed.

Tyler OHara Secures 2022 King of the Baggers Championship with Indian Motorcycle Racing and SS Cycle

Tyler O’Hara brings the number one plate back to Indian Motorcycle Racing.

Begin Press Release:

TYLER O’HARA CAPTURES 2022 MOTOAMERICA MISSION KING OF THE BAGGERS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR INDIAN MOTORCYCLE RACING AND S&S CYCLE

Riding the Mission® Foods S&S® Indian Challenger, O’Hara’s Consistency Through the Seven-Round MotoAmerica Series Carries Indian Motorcycle Over Rival Harley-Davidson to Reclaim Coveted Crown

Minneapolis, MN. (September 14, 2022) – This past weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Tyler O’Hara battled through rain-soaked conditions to finish second in the Main Event, earning the necessary points to capture the 2022 Mission King of the Baggers (KOTB) Championship for Indian Motorcycle Racing and S&S® Cycle.  This is the second KOTB Championship in three years for O’Hara and the Indian Motorcycle Racing-S&S team in the increasingly popular MotoAmerican bagger-racing class.

O’Hara’s 2022 Championship run was a picture of consistency throughout the seven-round series. The Petaluma, Calif. native captured five podium finishes over seven rounds; including a victory at the Daytona Speedway season opener, along with two fourth-place finishes aboard his ever-reliable Mission® Foods S&S® Indian Challenger. This year’s Championship came at the expense of Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle rider Travis Wyman, who entered the series’ final round with a three-point lead in the Championship point race, only to see his hopes literally slip away when he crashed midway through the second lap while frantically chasing O’Hara through the rain soaked circuit in New Jersey.

It was an afternoon rainstorm that spoiled the best-laid plans for points leader Wyman and served up a golden opportunity for O’Hara and teammate Jeremy McWilliams, who both thrive in wet conditions. Starting from the fourth and fifth positions respectively, O’Hara and McWilliams jumped out to a fast start, overtaking Wyman and Vance-Hines Harley Davidson rider James Rispoli and moving into second and third position respectively coming out of turn one. This allowed McWilliams to slow the pace for the field behind him, including Wyman, and create breathing room for O’Hara who consistently maintained pace behind race leader Kyle Wyman. With an added level of urgency thanks to McWilliams’ stifling efforts, the younger Wyman made an aggressive outside pass on McWilliams and immediately began aggressively pushing to close the gap with O‘Hara, ultimately low-siding and sliding into the infield late into the second lap. Although he was able to get back on his bike and continue the race, Wyman fell to the back of the pack, while O’Hara stayed close behind the older Wyman brother, holding his second-place position to the finish and capturing his second KOTB Championship.

“Even though it’s one rider that earns the Championship, this was a situation where the support from Jeremy and our ability to work together made all the difference, and I could not be more grateful for his support and the tireless work of my entire Indian Motorcycle-S&S team,” said O’Hara. “Every member of this team sacrificed so much of themselves over this past year and to stand on that podium and celebrate this Championship with them is a testament to our commitment and nothing short of a dream come true. I’m so proud to reclaim the crown and the number-one plate for such an incredible and talented group of guys who put their hearts and souls into this season.”

McWilliams, a veteran road racer of Moto GP fame, joined the Indian Motorcycle-S&S factory team at the start of the 2022 season. Along with a virtually unmatched level of experience and skill that resulted in a Round Two victory at Daytona and fourth-place finish overall, McWilliams brought an invaluable wealth of knowledge to the team. His technical input and collaboration with Indian Motorcycle-S&S engineers and mechanics throughout the season allowed the team to continually evolve, refine and improve the Indian Challenger, optimizing set ups specific to track conditions at each and every round.

“Jeremy’s expertise and experience, combined with Tyler’s skill and competitive fire is something truly special,” said Gary Gray, Vice President Racing, Service and Technology for Indian Motorcycle. “When you back those two guys up with the expertise, commitment and heart of this entire Indian Motorcycle-S&S crew, you come away with a Championship. On behalf of everyone at Indian Motorcycle, I could not be prouder of our team and what we’ve accomplished this season.”

Ultimately, it’s the commitment of the entire team, including the engineers and mechanics behind the riders, that makes the difference between winning or losing a championship. This was no better evidenced then by the consistency of O’Hara and his Mission® Foods S&S® Indian Challenger throughout the entire season. Not only did O’Hara’s #29 bike finish every race during the season without fail, it never finished lower than fourth place.

“This Championship is the result of the sacrifices and commitment made by each and every member of our team – so many days on the road away from their families and sleepless nights working to ensure our bikes were dialed-in for Tyler and Jeremy,” said Jeff Bailey, S&S Cycle Crew Chief. “Every member of our crew played a critical role, making unique sacrifices and sharing in the highs and lows we experienced together throughout the season, and that’s truly what makes this Championship so gratifying. I could not be prouder of this group of incredible individuals.”

Volcon ePowersports has announced its entry into the e-bicycle market with its new Brat e-bike. The Brat is made to handle both on and off-road riding and takes its styling cues from the Grunt and Runt motorcycles in the brand’s line. The Brat will be available starting November 2022 at $2,799.

“While our brand was built on the dirt, we have a passion for all things performance and the Brat meets our expectations,” Volcon CEO Jordan Davis said in a company press release. “We set out to enter the market with not only a high-performance machine but a bike that had style as well. The ebike market is saturated with look-alike products, and we believe the Brat stands out from the crowd in both looks and performance.”

That performance comes from the Brat’s 750Wh battery and 750W motor, which enable the bike to reach speeds of up to 28 mph. Charge time is between six and seven hours on a Level 1 outlet. It’s capable of 70 miles per charge in Ride Mode 1, and 30 miles in Modes 2–4. Mode 1 supplies the least amount of pedal assistance and does not engage the throttle. The throttle is activated in Mode 2, but assistance is still light. Mode 3 provides more power and torque while Mode 4 gives riders full access to the Brat’s performance capabilities.

The Brat also has front and rear suspension, with an adjustable USD fork at the front and an adjustable monoshock at the rear. Hydraulic disc brakes provide stopping power.

It also comes with a 4-inch LED color display that, in addition to providing all the bike’s vital information, is Bluetooth compatible, allowing you to connect your smartphone and use the Volcon app to access even more detailed information.

LED lights are used front and rear, and a lockable storage compartment also features a USB charging port.

Reservations are free to make at volcon.com/brat.

The Brat has full suspension, four ride modes, and is capable of reaching up to 28 mph.

Gabriel Rodrigo announces his retirement from racing

His real breakthrough year would come in 2018 when he claimed his first podium and seventh in the overall standings. In 2019, he joined Kömmerling Gresini Moto3™ as one of the favourites, but his campaign was hampered by injuries. For 2020 he switched to the number 2, in honour of his brother Juan, but he was unable to stand on the rostrum and finished again with a best of P4. Rodrigo remained with Gresini in Moto3™ for the 2021 campaign and although it was a difficult season, he was able to stand on the podium.

“I won’t come in as bad as last year” – Cal Crutchlow

“I know the staff, I know the people there, I worked with Wilco Zeelenberg back in 2009 when I won my WorldSSP Championship so I’ve got a long history with a lot of the mechanics even there too. I’m looking forward to getting back into it, six races… I think it’s six races in eight weeks, and I have two tests in those eight weeks. It’s going to be a busy period, I went from being the least busy person to probably being the busiest person, but yeah, I’m looking forward to it. Seeing a lot of friends in the paddock, as I said I’ve been actively riding a little bit of late so I won’t come into it as bad as last year.”
