Third victory of the year captured by Webb at SLC4

Forkner makes ground in 250SX West with pivotal Utah win.

Defending Monster Energy Supercross champion Cooper Webb picked up his third win of the 2020 season at SLC4, delivering a commanding performance tonight in Utah.

The Red Bull KTM rider won by 5.091s over the in-form Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), as Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) salvaged P3.

While Webb jumped out front early to withstand a challenge from a gritty Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) to lead every lap, Tomac was forced to climb from 12th at the end of the opening lap. Fourth was top-qualifier Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain KTM WPS).

Roczen, meanwhile, again dropped back down the order from around the halfway point, eventually crossing the finish in fifth place as he continues to battle health problems through the Salt Lake City rounds.

It was another strong showing from Martin Davalos (Monster Energy Team Tedder KTM) in P6, followed by Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), his teammate Dean Wilson, Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Benny Bloss (Rocky Mountain KTM WPS).

Anderson has now moved to fourth in the standings after Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia crashed out of the main event, his factory YZ450F too badly damaged to continue in what appeared to be a strange incident. Australia’s Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports CR22 Racing KTM) rode to 11th after a solid start inside the top five.

The 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Championship will again be staged inside Rice-Eccles Stadium this Sunday, 14 June. Tomac currently carries a 27-point advantage over Webb, with Roczen a further two behind.

Victory in Salt Lake City has lifted Austin Forkner into 250SX West title contention as the regional series restarted in 2020 Monster Energy Supercross.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider climbed to second in the standings with two rounds remaining, now within 10 points of the lead.

Forkner was able to get out front early and maintain the lead from there, keeping red plate-holder Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) at bay to win by 3.109s. Completing the podium was Forkner’s teammate Cameron McAdoo.

It was an important result for McAdoo as, although he wasn’t able to fend off Ferrandis, his finish took points away from top qualifier Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha), who is now third in the points.

Finishing fifth was Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), directly behind Cooper and comfortably ahead of Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki). Seventh through 10th included Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM), Christian Craig (Geico Honda), Derek Drake (TLD Red Bull KTM) and Mitchell Oldenburg (Penrite Honda Racing).

Returning for his first appearance since Anaheim 2, Geico Honda’s Jett Lawrence ran inside the top five early, but a fall demoted him to an 11th-place result. Elder brother and teammate Hunter endured a trying debut, going down on lap one of the final and ending up 13th, behind countryman Luke Clout (Penrite Honda Racing).

The 250SX West championship will continue with its penultimate round this Sunday, 14 June, with Ferrandis looking to set up back-to-back crowns in the final stages of the season.

Tomac extends advantage with Salt Lake City win

Controlled victory for McElrath as 250SX East series resumes.

Image: Octopi Media.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac stretched an eight-point lead in Monster Energy Supercross 2020 at Salt Lake City, winning in the sport’s return to competition today.

Tomac was all class in the 450SX main event, remaining patient in difficult, dry conditions to win by 3.771s over Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM).

It was Blake Baggett (Team Rocky Mountain WPS KTM) led an action-packed first half of the race, before Tomac – who had to overcome both Webb and Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) in a scrap for position – ultimately made his way by.

Both Webb and Roczen soon followed, however, they weren’t able to mount another true challenge to Tomac from that point. Roczen saved a major mishap on the penultimate lap to salvage the final place on the podium.

Behind the leading trio, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne were fourth and fifth respectively, with Martin Davalos (Monster Energy Team Tedder KTM) climbing to sixth. Baggett, meanwhile, faded to seventh.

Rounding out the top 10 this afternoon were Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha), a fast-starting Justin Brayton (Team Honda HRC) and Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).

The return to racing of Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was short-lived, going down heavily while in P2 on lap two. Both Tomac and Webb were momentarily caught up in the incident.

In addition, Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 KTM) was one of multiple riders to pit during the final, going out of the race but eventually credited with 19th.

The first Salt Lake City round of 250SX East saw Monster Energy Star Yamaha’s Shane McElrath race to a pivotal victory to recommence the 2020 season.

The result has enabled McElrath to close to within seven points of defending champion Chase Sexton (Geico Honda), both now having two wins apiece so far.

Behind them to complete the podium was Daytona winner Garrett Marchbanks (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), who managed to make his way by Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) in the early laps and that’s where they would remain.

Despite going down on the opening lap, Pierce Brown (TLD Red Bull KTM) charged back to fifth, followed by Kyle Peters (Phoenix Racing Honda), Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Enzo Lopes (ClubMX Yamaha), Jace Owen (Phoenix Racing Honda) and John Short (Manluk Racing Honda).

There was trouble on the opening lap for the returning Colt Nichols (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and he was forced to pit, before working his way back to 15th position. Geico Honda rookie Jo Shimoda was involved, also required to stop.

Round 12 of the Monster Energy Supercross championship will take place this Wednesday, again at Rice-Eccles Stadium, where each of the final seven rounds have been scheduled to round out the series.

Updated Supercross schedule remains a work in progress

Updated Supercross schedule remains a work in progress

Challenges mount for Feld Motor Sports to map out final seven rounds.

Image: Octopi Media.

Organisers of Monster Energy Supercross continue to evaluate options in order to complete all seven rounds remaining in the 2020 championship, determined to deliver the full series as planned.

The opening 10 rounds took place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic halting proceedings, with Eli Tomac currently atop the 450SX standings while Dylan Ferrandis and Chase Sexton lead the 250SX regions.

Speaking to the Real Talk 447 Podcast hosted by Jeff Emig alongside Ricky Carmichael (embedded below), Feld Motor Sports director of operations – Supercross Dave Prater outlined the challenges presented as the entertainment business seeks to save the season.

“Right now we’re planning for multiple situations,” Prater stated during the interview. “We’re working on different budget scenarios depending on where we end up racing and what dates we end up racing on, so that’s the biggest challenge.

“The uncertainty of not knowing when things will get back to normal, we’re trying to plan for the best possible scenario to get these seven rounds in and finishing the 2020 season. The goal is to finish rounds 11 through 17 before the end of 2020.”

Feld Motor Sports announced last week its intention to complete the series later this year, which will almost certainly follow the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship that’s tentatively scheduled to commence in mid-June with the Florida National and conclude in Southern California on 5 September.

“With all of the OEMs and teams it was unanimous, everyone wanted to finish the Supercross season, so that’s what we’re working towards,” he continued. “Everyone thought it was important that they get a complete 17-round championship.”

Ongoing teleconferences between Feld Motor Sports and the manufacturers involved continue to take place, gathering every Monday and Thursday to assess the ever-evolving situation. Communication with series sponsors are also continuing.

The added element of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season being delayed, as well as a looming National Football League (NFL) season scheduled to open in September, could complicate the ability for Supercross to secure traditional venues in the fall. Back-to-back double-header rounds aren’t a priority of Feld Motor Sports at this moment.

Postponements to a wide range of sporting events including the Major League Soccer (MLS) will also likely disrupt plans to host the 2020 Monster Energy Cup at the Dignity Health Sports Park – home stadium of the LA Galaxy – in October.

It’s unclear when an updated Supercross schedule will be finalized and announced, with Feld Motor Sports having to work around the revised MLB and NFL schedules when set. Once Supercross does resume, it’s anticipated it will run from mid-September through to the end of October over consecutive weekends in an ideal roster.

Despite widespread speculation that the series wouldn’t be able to be declared 10 rounds in, Prater did state that it could in fact be called now and still warrant a championship, not that Feld Motor Sport is considering that as a genuine option.

Late charge seals Tomac win in 50th Daytona Supercross

Marchbanks breaks through for Kawasaki double in 250SX East final.

Image: Octopi Media.

Monster Energy Supercross points-leader Eli Tomac charged to a fourth-career Daytona Supercross 450SX main event win in the historic race’s 50th edition.

Tomac and Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) were tied in points entering round 10 of the season, the pair separated by only 0.707s as the checkered flag flew.

Roczen led from the opening lap all the way through to the closing minutes when he made a minor error, when a late effort from Monster Energy Kawasaki-mounted Tomac saw him finally make his way to the front from as far back as fifth on lap one.

Meanwhile, defending champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) crossed the line in third, fending off 2018 title-winner Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), while the top five was filled by Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha).

Barcia’s teammate Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha) delivered an inspiring ride for sixth, followed by Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Malcolm Stewart (Smartop Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda), his teammate Justin Hill and Justin Brayton (Team Honda HRC).

The final appearance of Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 Racing Honda) saw him ride to 13th position, matching his best result of the season from Arlington two races ago.

The 2020 season will now move on to Indianapolis for round 11 of 17 next Saturday night, with Tomac leading by three points over Roczen in the premier class standings.

Image: Octopi Media.

A first-career victory was earned by Garrett Marchbanks in 250SX East at Daytona.

After winning his heat race earlier in the night, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Marchbanks went wire-to-wire in the main event.

His eventual margin over defending champion and red plate-holder Chase Sexton (Geico Honda) was 2.019s, as fast qualifier Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) completed the podium.

Martin managed a late move on RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) for position with just three laps remaining, while fifth was Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Yamaha) despite an opening lap incident with Jordon Smith (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki). The latter went out of the race.

In sixth position was Pierce Brown (Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM), joined in the top 10 by Jo Shimoda (Geico Honda), Enzo Lopes (Yamaha), Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Cedric Soubeyras (Husqvarna).

At the top of the point-standings remains Sexton, extending his advantage to 10 points over McElrath entering Indianapolis next Saturday, 14 March.

Roczen dominates Atlanta main event to level championship lead

Image: Octopi Media.

The points at the top of the 450SX standings have been levelled after Ken Roczen dominated Atlanta’s ninth round of Monster Energy Supercross.

The Team Honda HRC rider grabbed the hole-shot and never looked back as he went onto record a stunning 13.612s over Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia, which now sees him share the points lead with Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki).

There was chaos unfolding behind Roczen, as Tomac went down after an aggressive pass on Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM) in the early stages, while a pile up later in proceedings caught out Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), Vince Friese (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda) and Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing).

Martin Davalos (Team Tedder KTM) held a podium position until the final lap, where he was ultimately passed by reigning champion Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Tomac to finish in fifth.

Justin Hill claimed sixth (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda) followed by Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing), Malcolm Stewart (Smarttop Bullfrog MCR Honda), Friese, and Wilson. Australian Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports) was 15th.

Image: Octopi Media.

Reigning champion Chase Sexton has taken sole possession of the 250SX East points lead after claiming a commanding victory at Atlanta’s third round of the series.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s RJ Hampshire secured the hole-shot and early lead, controlling the field for the opening laps of the main event meanwhile fending off Sexton, who was also in the midst of a battle with Shane McElrath (Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing).

McElrath actually made the pass on the Sexton, however the number one made the pass back before going onto make an aggressive yet fair move on Hampshire for the lead.

Jeremy Martin (Geico Honda) was in the mix during the opening half, however an error by Hampshire left tuff-blocks on the circuit, and the number six was caught out by the debris and crashed heavily as a result. He remounted for 19th.

In the end, Hampshire secured runner-up honours ahead of McElrath, while the top five was rounded out by Jordon Smith (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and rookie Jo Shimoda (Geico Honda).

Enzo Lopes (Yamaha) was sixth followed by Garrett Marchbanks (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), Nick Gaines (Yamaha), Jalek Swoll (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), and Josh Hill (Yamaha).

Monster Energy Supercross heads to Daytona, Florida, next weekend.

Defending 450SX champion Webb breaks through in San Diego

Defending 450SX champion Webb breaks through in San Diego

Ferrandis extends advantage with another win in 250SX West.

Image: Octopi Media.

Defending Monster Energy Supercross champion Cooper Webb has risen for his first victory of the 2020 season in a pivotal result at San Diego tonight.

Six rounds in and the number one plate-holder delivered a breakout performance for Red Bull KTM to climb to third in the 450SX standings, now within nine points of the lead.

It was a well-earned result for Webb, who was able to overcome longtime leader Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) with just two minutes remaining in the premier class main event. That pair finished 1-2, with Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS) landing third.

At the beginning, Baggett took the holeshot before Cianciarulo stormed into the lead, but it was Webb who moved to the head of the pack through the first few turns. Cianciarulo countered and led the majority prior to Webb’s late surge and an important win for his title hopes.

Fourth tonight was the best that Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) could manage after working his way from as far back as 10th at the close of the opening lap, getting the better of Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) following a series of exchanges between them, while Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) also had a bad start on his way to P6.

Roczen’s teammate Justin Brayton was directly behind in seventh, as Malcolm Stewart (Smartop MotoConcepts Bullfrog Spas Honda), his teammate Justin Hill and the fast-starting Aaron Plessinger (Monster Energy Yamaha) filled the top 10. Plessinger was as high as third before a fall five minutes in.

Australian legend Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 Honda) was able to return for his send-off in San Diego after transferring through his heat race, but exited the main event in the closing stages.

The red plate remains in Roczen’s position, now just a single point ahead of Tomac as Webb homes in on them in third prior to the 20202 Monster Energy Supercross heading east to Tampa next Saturday, 15 February.

Image: Octopi Media.

Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis extended his advantage in 250SX West after winning tonight in San Diego.

It was Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) who led early, before Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) took charge for his turn at the front.

Working his way from third on the opening lap, defending champion Ferrandis sliced his way by Forkner in the closing laps to take victory by 6.123s as the checkered flag flew. It was Ferrandis and Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) who joined him on the podium.

Mosiman, meanwhile, rode to a solid fourth following the disappointment of a DNF in Oakland one week ago, comfortably ahead of Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM), who managed to take fifth from Luke Clout (Penrite Honda Racing) toward the end of the final.

Finishing seventh was Jacob Hayes (Gas Monkey AJE Motorsports Husqvarna), ahead of Carson Brown (JME Motorsports Husqvarna), Derek Drake (TLD Red Bull KTM) and Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki).

Australians Jay Wilson (Yamaha) and Aaron Tanti (Yamaha) finished 11th and 14th respectively. A notable non-finisher was Cameron McAdoo (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), his bike stopping while he was in fifth.

Entering the mid-season break for 250SX West, Ferrandis now holds an important seven-point lead in the standings ahead of Cooper, with Forkner a further six in arrears in third position. Their next round will come in Seattle on 28 March.

Second win of Supercross season for Tomac in Oakland

Second win of Supercross season for Tomac in Oakland

Victory of champion Ferrandis earns 250SX West red plate.

Image: Octopi Media.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac stood atop the podium for the second time in this 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season with a convincing performance at Oakland.

It was Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) who led early, before Tomac made his move into the lead at halfway on the deteriorating circuit.

However, a mistake from Tomac soon afterwards enabled Roczen to retake the advantage. There was no stopping Tomac though, responding with two minutes left on the clock and going on to win by 3.557s.

The major talking point came on the final lap as a fast-finishing Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM) first passed Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) for third, before striking on Roczen on the final lap at the final corner.

Contact made between the pair – Webb finishing second and Roczen third – appeared to cause Roczen pain in his right leg following the checkered flag. The latter still retains the red plate following five rounds.

Fourth came Cianciarulo despite riding with a bruised tailbone from his crash at Glendale, while Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) rounded out the top five. Sixth was an inspired ride from Justin Barcia, who went through via the LCQ due to an engine failure on his Monster Energy Yamaha in his heat.

It was a strong result for Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) in seventh, with heat two winner Justin Hill (Smartop Bullfrog Spas Motoconcepts Honda), Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS) and Malcolm Stewart (Smartop Bullfrog Spas Motoconcepts Honda) in places eight to 10.

In the championship it’s still Roczen who holds the red plate, three points ahead of Tomac as Monster Energy Supercross travels to San Diego next Saturday, 8 February. Chad Reed sat out tonight’s round with an ongoing rib injury.

Image: Octopi Media.

Defending 250SX West champion Dylan Ferrandis has taken over the points-lead with his second win of the year in Oakland.

The Monster Energy Star Yamaha rider stalked Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) until making an aggressive move with five minutes remaining.

From there he extended a 2.336s advantage, while the podium was completed by Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Yamaha), who made a late move by early leader Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) for position.

Penrite Honda Racing teammates Luke Clout and Mitchell Oldenburg were fifth and sixth respectively, benefiting from a late mishap of Brendan Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM), who was fifth but dropped to eighth towards the end.

In seventh was Hartranft’s teammate Derek Drake, while another Australian in Aaron Tanti (Yamaha) took a season-best of ninth place. Martin Castelo (JMC Motorsports Racing Fly Husqvarna) finished 10th.

Disaster struck in-form Rockstar Energy Husqvarna contender Michael Mosiman, who crashed out at the halfway point and was ruled out with bike damage sustained in the multi-rider pile-up. Next of the Australians in the field was Jay Wilson (Yamaha) as he rode to P16.

The final 250SX West round prior to their mid-season break will be San Diego next Saturday night, with Ferrandis now two points ahead of Cooper and Forkner a further eight markers back.

Dominant 450SX performance from Tomac at Anaheim 2

Dominant 450SX performance from Tomac at Anaheim 2

First victory of season for Ferrandis in chaotic 250SX West final.

Image: Octopi Media.

There was no stopping Eli Tomac at Anaheim 2 as he became the third different 450SX main event winner three rounds into the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tomac dominated the premier class to win by 1.979s over Ken Roczen (Team Honda HRC) and a resurgent Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM).

It was Roczen who led the early laps, fending off a challenge from Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WPS KTM) after the latter went down, but Tomac worked his way from 10th on lap one into the lead by the seven-minute mark.

From there it was all Tomac at the front ahead of a composed Roczen, who held Webb at bay for podium results. Fourth was an inspired ride from Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), from teammate Jason Anderson in fifth.

Rookie Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) settled into sixth place as Justin Brayton (Team Honda HRC), Malcolm Stewart (Smartop MotoConcepts Bullfrog Spas Honda), red plate-holder Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) and Dean Wilson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).

It is now Roczen who leads the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, standings by three points over Barcia and a further two ahead of Tomac entering Glendale’s fourth round in Arizona next Saturday, 25 January.

Image: Octopi Media.

Outgoing Australian Chad Reed (Mountain Motorsports cbdMD CR22 Honda) once again qualified via the LCQ and went on to cross the line in 18th position for what will be his final appearance at Angel Stadium.

Defending champion Dylan Ferrandis has won his first round of 2020 in a spectacular 250SX West main event at Anaheim 2 that saw Jett Lawrence crash out of contention on the final lap.

Ferrandis took the lead on the final lap after rookie Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda) led much of the final, however, he crashed out heavily on the final lap in an attempt to counter on the Frenchman.

The victory of Monster Energy Star Yamaha’s Ferrandis was placed under review due to contact made with Christian Craig (Geico Honda) while passing for second at halfway – the pair of them going down and Craig forced out altogether. Ferrandis was soon cleared afterwards.

It was initially Craig who led the way before Lawrence took charge early and stretched his lead to over 10 seconds mid-race. A mistake and fall enabled Ferrandis to catch and make a final lap pass, with Lawrence going over the ‘bars in the final set of whoops while fighting back for the lead.

Lawrence, 16, wasn’t the only big-name casualty in the whoops, with Austin Forkner (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) also falling victim while in podium contention in the latter stages and ultimately crossing the line in 17th position.

In the end it was Ferrandis who won round three by 21.013s ahead of teammate Justin Cooper, who retains the championship lead by 12 points. Completing the podium for the second week in a row was Brandon Hartranft (TLD Red Bull KTM) in third.

Despite both going through the LCQ, Michael Mosiman (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and Alex Martin (JGRMX Yoshimura Suzuki) were fourth and fifth respectively, with Australian Luke Clout (Penrite Honda Racing) scoring a career-best sixth.

Clout’s teammate Mitchell Oldenburg was directly behind him in P7, followed by Jacob Hayes (Gas Monkey AJE Husqvarna), Lawrence credited ninth despite breaking his collarbone and Killian Auberson (Gas Monkey AJE Husqvarna) 10th.

A2 was also a solid outing for Australian championship regulars Jay Wilson (Yamaha) – who sat out last weekend in St. Louis – and Aaron Tanti (Yamaha), riding to 11th and 13th places respectively.

The 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, series now moves onto Glendale, Arizona, next Saturday night on 25 January.
