MIC: Economic Data Shows Motorcycling, ATV Riding, Side-by-Side Driving Among Nation’s Largest Outdoor Recreation Activities

As far as recreational outdoor activities go, motorcycling is high up there.

Begin press release:

Motorcycling, ATV riding, and side-by-side driving are among the country’s five largest traditional or conventional outdoor recreation activities, when ranked by economic output, according to data released last week by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

This was the first time that the BEA provided preliminary data on economic contribution in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, demonstrating how important outdoor recreation is to both local business as well as the nation’s gross domestic product.

And, it’s a growth sector.

According to the BEA release, its Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account “shows that inflation-adjusted (real) GDP for the outdoor recreation economy grew by 3.9 percent in 2017, faster than the 2.4 percent growth of the overall U.S. economy. Real gross output, compensation, and employment all grew faster in outdoor recreation than for the economy as a whole.”

The bureau defines “conventional” outdoor recreation as activities done for pleasure, such as camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing, and involving some physical effort.

The Five Largest Conventional Outdoor Recreation Activities by Economic Output

“We have long known that motorcycling, ATV riding and side-by-side driving are major contributors to the economy, to our country’s GDP, in so many ways,” said Tim Buche, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. “We boost local economies, too, and not just through powersports dealers and retailers. Our enthusiasts book hotel stays, pay park fees, buy food, supplies, and other gear they need for all sorts of great outdoor adventures. All of that makes them, and our industry, a powerful economic engine that merits the attention of policymakers and those who manage public lands.”

The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable is a coalition of outdoor recreation trade associations and the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association are members. Looking at the BEA’s latest report, the ORR noted some additional highlights:

  • Outdoor recreation accounts for 2.2 percent of U.S. GDP, creating $778 billion in gross output supporting 5.2 million jobs.
  • Outdoor recreation is responsible for a larger share of GDP than many major industries, including chemical products manufacturing, farming and ranching, mining, and utilities.

“[The] release of state data is a significant step forward for the entire outdoor recreation industry,” said Jessica Wahl, executive director of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “This second full year of national data – together with prototype state-level numbers – proves that our industry is a driving economic force across the country. ORR will continue to work with Congress, federal agencies, state governments and others to ensure that everyone has access to our public lands and waters and that our nation’s outdoor infrastructure can sustain and grow healthy communities and healthy economies.”

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers, distributors, dealers and retailers of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, ROVs, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts, accessories and related goods and services, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at mic.org.

Webster equipped with world championship-spec bike for MXoN

MX2 rider to pilot Team Honda 114 Motorsports CRF250R this weekend.

Image: Foremost Media.

Team Australia’s Kyle Webster will be equipped with a Team Honda 114 Motorsports CRF250R at this weekend’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), the same specification bike piloted by compatriot Mitch Evans in the MX2 World Championship.

The Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing rider, who will make his MXoN debut at Assen, arrived in the Netherlands a week ahead of the event, allowing him to sample the bike on European soil.

The Western Australian will utilise the full package on offer, including KYB suspension, which after testing with the team has injected confidence into him for the prestigious race.

“I will be using their bike for the race this weekend,” Webster told MotoOnline.com.au. “It’s definitely a very strong bike – it’s just a bit different to my bike in Australia. I feel this one has more bottom end power and mine has more top end – they just have so much stuff on theirs. I am using their whole bike, suspension and all.

“I was feeling so average for a couple days [after arriving], just being tired and lethargic. It was such a cool experience going to the test track with them and seeing how they work. I feel much more confident after riding the bike a couple of times this week and getting used to it.”

Webster will joined on the Australian team by triple MX Nationals MX1 champion Dean Ferris (Raceline Recover8 KTM) and Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor), who’s replacing Evans after the Queenslander withdrew due to ongoing injures.

Learning Magny Cours layout key for Bautista

Spaniard still holds hope in trimming Rea’s staggering points lead.

Image: Supplied.

Alvaro Bautista believes learning and adapting to the Magny Cours layout will be key to his competitiveness this weekend at round 11 of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Bautista, who will depart Aruba.it Racing – Ducati at the end of the season after signing to a newly-formed Honda Racing Corporation squad for 2020, captured victory last time out at Portimao, and is still endeavouring to trim Jonathan Rea’s (Kawaskai Racing Team) staggering 91-point advantage in the championship rankings.

“My shoulder is much better than at Portimao,” said Bautista. “So we will immediately see what it’s like when I go on the track.

“I think I will have no problem to ride, but it will be very important for me to do a lot of laps on the track, learn the layout and be competitive in the race. We have to try and keep cutting the gap to Jonathan, but we are ready for the weekend and I hope to enjoy this new track.”

Only three rounds and a total of nine races remain for Bautista to miraculously place himself back in title contention, the Spaniard once holding a 60-point lead in the championship before downfall in form.

Vlaanderen sensing pressure of being MXoN favourite with Team Holland

Vlaanderen sensing pressure of being MXoN favourite with Team Holland

Dutch squad tipped as the favourite at home event in Assen.

Image: Supplied.

Calvin Vlaanderen is sensing the pressure of Team Holland being tipped as the favourite for this weekend’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), which will be staged at Assen in the Netherlands.

The Honda HRC rider, who will be joined by powerhouse contenders Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Glenn Coldenhoff (Standing Construct KTM), is confident he can withstand the mounting pressure of winning in front of a home crowd.

Finishing this year’s MX2 World Championship with a ranking of eighth after missing a number of rounds due to injury, Vlaanderen was ultimately chosen for the MX2 spot on the Dutch team over Roan Van De Moosdijk (F&H Kawasaki) as the federation initially named the two riders as possibilities.

“I am extremely excited for this years’ Motocross of Nations,” Vlaanderen stated. “It is a massive honour to get picked for the Netherlands at this race, and even bigger because the event is in Assen, where there will be huge home support.

“With myself, Jeffrey and Glenn we have a really good chance at winning the event but we know that comes with big pressure, so now that is probably the biggest thing. However I think I have shown this year that I can cope with that, and that I am a good sand rider and that I can keep pushing until the very end, and that will be my main target.

“It won’t be easy racing against 450s but I am confident with my Honda CRF250RW and I think we’ll have a good setup for this race. Also a big thanks to all the fans who have shown their support after it was announced I was in the team, it makes me extremely proud to have you cheering me on.”

In 2018, Team Holland was primed for victory following dominant performances by Herlings and Coldenhoff, however an eye injury denied Vlaanderen of finishing race one and ruled him out of race two. Still, the squad finished second in the classification.

Rea confident Magny Cours will play to Ninja ZX-10RR strengths

Rea confident Magny Cours will play to Ninja ZX-10RR strengths

Kawasaki Racing Team rider carries 91-point lead into the French round.

Image: Supplied.

Four-time defending champion Jonathan Rea is confident portions of the Magny Cours circuit will play to the strengths of his Kawasaki Racing Team Ninja ZX-10RR this weekend as the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship heads to France.

Rea has stretched his points advantage out to 91 over Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), placing the Irishman in a comfortable position as the series winds down.

“It is very exciting to go to Magny Cours because it feels like the previous round in Portugal was a long time ago,” Rea explained. “I am ready to get back on the bike. Now we turn our attentions to Magny Cours. It is a circuit that requires really good stability on the brakes and also a bike set-up that changes direction well.

“I feel that we are prepared as it is will play to the strengths of the Ninja ZX-10RR in some areas and in some areas we need to find a set-up compromise. We need to keep one eye on the weather and one eye on performance. At Magny Cours you never really know what weather cards you are going to get dealt. In any case I am ready to get stuck in.”

Following this weekend’s stop, just two round remain in WorldSBK at Argentina and Qatar.

European MXoN preparation worthwhile insists Osborne

European MXoN preparation worthwhile insists Osborne

Team USA rider confident extended European visit will pay off this weekend.

Image: Supplied.

Team USA’s Zach Osborne insists travelling to Europe to prepare weeks in advance of the 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) has been worthwhile, as he and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Jason Anderson have spent considerable time acquainting themselves with a selection of notoriously sandy circuits.

The Assen event will see sand trucked into the road racing venue, making for a unique track will test the world’s best riders this weekend in the Netherlands.

Osborne and Anderson were recently joined by MX2 challenger Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Yamaha Yamalube Star Racing), as the American squad endeavours to claims its first Chamberlain Trophy since 2011.

“It’s a real honour for me to be competing for Team USA at the Motocross of Nations this year, and something I’ve been focusing on for a while,” said Osborne. “Coming over to Europe early to get set-up and ready for the race has been great – a lot of fun and very worthwhile.

“Assen is going to be tough, but I think we have a pretty strong team. We have three guys who really want to be here, they’re enthusiastic about the event and I think that’s half the battle. The track is certainly unique, but I feel like I’m as ready as I can be. I’m focused on making it happen and looking forward to racing for my country.”

Saturday will see the opening practice sessions and qualification races take place, while Sunday will play host to the motos for the MXoN crown.

Rumi Motorcycles | 125cc two-stroke twin broke new ground

Junior Racer

With Phil Aynsley

An anchor hardly seems to be an appropriate part of a motorcycle company’s emblem, but for Rumi it made sense. Originally formed in the early 1900s to produce cast metal products such as propellers, during WWII it turned to armaments manufacture including miniature submarines, periscopes and torpedoes.

PA RumiJnr
Rumi Junior Racer – Rumi started off producing cast metal products, but later expanded

After the war Donnino Rumi (the founder’s son and a noted artist and sculptor) diversified the company’s products to include dough mixers, textile machinery and, from 1950, an individualistic range of 125cc twin cylinder 2-stoke motorcycles and scooters, all powered by the same basic engine designed by Pietro Vassena.

PA RumiJnr

This engine (in competition form) was the first in a motorcycle to employ alloy barrels with a chrome plated bore and expansion chamber exhausts – at least in a rather basic form.

The Gobetto in ‘Rumi | From submarines to motorcycles’ (link) was the factory’s top of the line race bike and was produced from 1951 to 1955 when it was replaced by the Junior. The Junior continued the use of chrome plated, alloy barrels and was fitted with two 18mm Dell’Orto carburettors and 10.5:1 compression pistons as standard.

PA RumiJnr
A race kit was also available for the Rumi Junior

Top speed was over 112km/h, however with the factory race kit, including larger carburettors, 11.5:1 pistons and racing exhaust pipes, this was raised to around 130km/h.

Earles front forks were standard but telescopic units were an option. The Sturcher rear shocks were air-assisted and featured adjustable dampening.

The Junior was the bike to beat in sport production racing in Italy and France during the late ‘50s. In 1959 it was in turn superseded by the Junior Gentleman.

Apart from having the motor rebuilt this bike is in original, unrestored condition.

Camier returning this weekend at Magny Cours WorldSBK

Camier returning this weekend at Magny Cours WorldSBK

Honda pilot overcomes shoulder injury in time for the French round.

Image: Supplied.

Moriwaki Althea Honda Team’s Leon Camier will return to racing this weekend for round 11 of the 2019 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship at Magny Cours in France, the British ace recently overcoming a shoulder injury.

Camier injured his left shoulder ligaments during the Superpole qualifying session at Imola, and underwent surgery in July when it became clear that despite his progress, he was not re-gaining the necessary strength and range of movement to ride.

“I’m happy and eager to get back to the team and to racing this weekend,” said Camier. “Being forced to stay away has been tough but the situation was what it was, so I just tried to cope as well as possible, focusing on my physiotherapy and training as soon as I was able to start that.

“Since the operation, my shoulder has got better and better day by day and now I can’t wait to ride my bike on Friday. I probably won’t be at 100% right from free practice 1 but I don’t expect any problems in getting through the weekend.”

It was announced this week that Honda Racing Corporation will field an in-house factory team in WorldSBK next year to be spearheaded by Alvaro Bautista, placing uncertainty on the future of Camier and the Moriwaki operation.
