MotoGP Statistics update heading to Thailand

Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing in Asia

This is the second time that Thailand has hosted a Grand Prix and below are some facts and statistics related to the previous events in Asia:

Buriram (Chang International Circuit) is the 28th circuit to hold a MotoGP race since it replaced the 500cc class as the premier class of motorcycle Grand Prix racing in 2002.

In addition, Thailand is the 20th different country to host a MotoGP race since 2002 and the seventh different Asian country to host a Grand Prix event (all solo classes) along with Qatar, Turkey, Japan, Malaysia, China and Indonesia.

A total of 285 Grand Prix races for solo motorcycles have taken place in Asia as follows: MotoGP –59, 500cc–30, Moto2 –48, 350cc–4, 250cc–47, Moto3 –44, 125cc–49, 80cc–4.

Last year, Buriram became the 11th different circuit that has been used for Grand Prix racing in Asia.

The circuits that have been used in Asia are as follows: Suzuka (56 Grand Prix races), Motegi (60), Losail (48), Fisco/Fuji (8), Sepang (59), Shah Alam (21), Johor (3), Shanghai (12), Istanbul Park (9), Sentul (6) and Buriram (3).

Asian riders have had great success across all solo Grand Prix classes in Asia, winning 44 of the 285 GP races (15.4%) that have taken place, all of them coming from Japan. The last Asian rider to win on any of the Asian tracks is Kaito Toba in Moto3 in Qatar earlier this year.

Honda is the most successful manufacturer in Asia in the MotoGP class since 2002 with 23 victories, with nine different riders: Dani Pedrosa (7), Marc Márquez (6), Valentino Rossi (3), Marco Melandri (2), Makoto Tamada (1), Max Biaggi (1), Casey Stoner (1), Sete Gibernau (1) and Alex Barros (1).

Yamaha has had 19 wins in the MotoGP class throughout Asia since 2002, with four different riders: Valentino Rossi (11), Jorge Lorenzo (6), Max Biaggi (1) and Maverick Viñales (1).

Massimo Meregalli – Monster Energy Yamaha Team Director

“We now start the Asian and Oceanian leg, which is always a crucial and very demanding part of the season for both the team and the riders. We have four races in five weeks, all in different time zones and the climates in these countries can also be quite different from each other. We will start with what we expect to be a very hot and humid race weekend at the Chang International Circuit. The team are very much looking forward to getting to work, especially because we really enjoyed last year‘s race weekend in Thailand. The Buriram track has great facilities, the track seems to suit our bike, and the fans are fantastic here as well. It was at this track where we started to see improvements last year, so we are very keen to compare our current shape and measure the progress we‘ve made since then.”

Ducati has had 17 wins in the MotoGP class in Asia. The last Ducati rider to win in Asia is Andrea Dovizioso this year in Qatar.

The best result in Asia for Suzuki in the MotoGP class is the second-place finish achieved in 2002 by Akira Ryo at Suzuka and Alex Rins at Sepang last year.

The Chang International Circuit venue is the 37th different circuit that Valentino Rossi has raced at during his Grand Prix career and his 28th in the premier class. Buriram is one of just four circuits on the current Grand Prix schedule where Valentino Rossi has not had a MotoGP victory yet, along with Austin, the Red Bull Ring in Austria and Aragon. Rossi has won in 23 different circuits so far in the premier class of GP racing.

Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider in the MotoGP class in Asia with 14 wins: Sepang (5), Losail (4), Suzuka (2), Shanghai (2) and Motegi (1).

MotoGP Facts and Stats

At the Aragon GP, Marc Márquez won for the 52nd time on what was his 122nd start in the premier class, which represents a winning rate of 42.6%: 25 times on his 37 visits on anticlockwise circuit and 27 on his 85 visits on clockwise circuits.

At MotorLand, Marquez won after qualifying on pole position. Of his 52nd victories in the premier class, 36 came after qualifying on pole. In addition, 47 of his 52 wins in the class came after qualifying within the top three.

Marquez’ win in Aragon is the seventh time that he had won at any circuit in the MotoGP class after qualifying on pole position, leading across the line on every lap and setting the fastest lap of the race along with Jerez (2014), Austin (2014, 2016, 2018), Argentina (2019) and Sachsenring (2019).

This was Marquez’ sixth GP win at MotorLand, which is the fourth track where he has won at least six times in GP racing along with the Sachsenring (10 wins), Austin (6) and Misano (6). Only four riders have won at least six times at more than four different tracks: Giacomo Agostini (11 tracks), Rossi (9), Mike Hailwood (6), Angel Nieto (5).

Marquez has won at least eight GPs per season in five different seasons of his GP career, equalling Angel Nieto and Giacomo Agostini. Only Valentino Rossi did better with at least eight wins per season over eight years.

In Aragon, Marquez made it 11 successive races on the podium for the first time since he finished on the podium 12 times in a row from the last two races of 2013 through the opening 10 races of 2014, which is his record in the MotoGP class.

Marquez is now leading the Championship with 98 points ahead of Andrea Dovizioso; this is the highest margin after the opening 14 races of the season in the premier class since 2005 and the 147-point margin between Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi after the Qatar GP.

In Aragon, Andrea Dovizioso stood on the podium for the first time since he won in Austria and the seventh time this year, equalling last year after the opening 14 races.

Andrea Dovizioso

“We needed that podium at Aragón to demonstrate that the work we are doing is right and to tackle these last five races with more confidence. Throughout the weekend in Spain, we made some small steps forward that helped us to finalize the set-up for the race and this must be our objective in every Grand Prix: improve the bike and my sensations in each session. Last year we completed a fantastic weekend at Buriram and we hope to start well again this year on Friday, even though in Thailand the weather factor always plays an important role and we will have to be clever to interpret it.”

Jack Miller was third at the Aragon GP, which is his fourth podium finish in the premier class and his third so far this year along with Austin and Brno. In addition, this is his 14th podium finish in Grand Prix racing, equalling Daryl Beattie in 11th place on the list of the Australian riders with most podium finishes.

2019 Aragon MotoGP Race results:
1 – Marc Marquez (SPA – Honda) 41’57.221
2 – Andrea Dovizioso (ITA – Ducati) +4.836
3 – Jack Miller* (AUS – Ducati) +5.430

With Andrea Dovizioso and Jack Miller’s podium finishes at the MotorLand, this was the fourth time this year there were at least two Ducati riders on the podium, one more than last year.

In addition, this was the 13th podium finish for Ducati after the opening 14 races of the season, one more than 2018 at this stage of the season. Only once have Ducati riders had more podium finishes at this stage of the season in the MotoGP class: 14 in 2007 with Casey Stoner, Loris Capirossi and Alex Barros.

Only one rider has now scored points in all 14 of the MotoGP races in 2019: Danilo Petrucci, who crossed the line in 12th place at MotorLand, although it was his worst result across the line since he was also 12th in Australia last year.

Danilo Petrucci

“I believe that we have got over the most difficult races of the season and from here on we can only improve. After the disappointment of Aragón, this week we’ve been working back in Borgo Panigale to find the answers to my problems and at Buriram I think we will see the first results. I can’t wait to arrive in Thailand and I hope to recapture the feeling I had in the first part of the season because I absolutely want to change this situation.”

MotoGP Rnd Aragon Petrucci

Fabio Quartararo, who crossed the line in fifth place in Aragon, is still leading the fight for the Rookie of the Year with 123 points ahead Joan Mir (49 points), followed by Francesco Bagnaia (29) and Miguel Oliveira (29), who was the top KTM rider across the line at MotorLand.

In addition, Fabio Quartararo is leading the Independent Team rider classification, six points ahead of Jack Miller and 25 ahead of Cal Crutchlow.

Aleix Espargaro finished seventh at the Aragon GP, which his best result since he was sixth at MotorLand last year.

Valentino Rossi, who crossed the line in eighth place in Aragon as the third Yamaha rider, has not won since Assen back in 2017, 41 successive races. The last time he failed to win in more than 41 successive races was from Portugal/2010 to Catalunya/2013 (44 successive races).

Valentino Rossi

“Now begins a series of races that will take us outside of Europe. The first of these GPs is the round held in Thailand. Last year the Buriram race weekend was really nice because I had the second place in qualifying and I was fast in the race. I fought for the podium until the end. I didn‘t get it and finished fourth, but I was fast. So, this year the goal is to be fast again and try to do even better than last year.”

Following the Aragon GP, Suzuki have scored 181 points in the Constructor’s World Championship classification thanks to Alex Rins’ ninth place, which is the highest points accumulated after the opening 14 races by Suzuki since 2007 when the Japanese manufacturer had 201 points after the Portuguese GP.

Alex Rins

“It’s been a pity for me not to get the results I’m capable of during the last couple of rounds, but now we sort of ‘restart’ the season with all these overseas races and it’s a good chance to reset. Despite my recent results, I’m still feeling very strong in general, and I hope to bring my bike to a good result this weekend. The atmosphere in Thailand is always impressive with so many fans! It will be exciting.”

The only one of the four rookies in the MotoGP class this year to have won at the Thai GP in any of the smaller classes last season is Francesco Bagnaia in Moto2.

However, fellow rookie Miguel Oliveira is the only other rookie who has stood on the podium in Thailand, finishing third in the Moto2 class last year.

At the Thai GP, Pol Espargaro, who missed the race in Aragon due to a wrist injury, is scheduled to start his 100th race in the premier class of GP racing.

Motom | Italy’s third biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the mid 1950s

Obscure Italian marque Motom

With Phil Aynsley

The now little known Motom marque was in fact the third biggest producer of motorcycles in Italy during the mid 1950s (after Moto Guzzi and Garelli), yet most people wouldn’t even recognise the name!

PA Motom
Motom 48cc Motomic

PA Motom

It saw a spectacular rise from its founding in 1947 by Lancia engineer Battista Falchetto and businessman Frua Ernesto De Angelis. They had been inspired by the sales of Ducati’s Cucciolo motor and set about designing a complete motorcycle with a similar style of engine. The 48cc Motomic appeared later that year at the Geneva Show.

The bike proved to be a success and was soon followed by a succession of derivative models, all 48cc in capacity until 1957.

Famed Gilera designer Piero Remor joined the company briefly in 1953 and both the styling and mechanical details were tidied up during this time. Output was over 2hp at 4500rpm which was quite high for its capacity (and was easily tuned to produce more) and as a result the Motom was soon used in small capacity racing.

In 1953 it won its class in the 3200km Giro d’Italia at an average speed of almost 65km/h. In 1958 the factory team won every 50cc race held in Italy!

Motom had further success with the very avant-garde 98TS and 163 Delfino but closed its doors in 1971.

Honda, Rever Join Forces To Help Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation has long been one of the most active motorcycle-involved charities we know of, and we’re happy to see Rever team up with it to help deserving kids.

Begin Press Release:

Honda, Rever Team Up to Benefit Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Riders could raise $10,000 through Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge

American Honda and ride-planning/tracking/sharing app Rever have challenged riders of all motorcycle brands to collectively track 250,000 miles with the app prior to October 20, 2019. If participants reach that goal, Honda will donate $10,000 to the Los Angeles Ride for Kids/Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation charity event, taking place October 20 at American Honda’s headquarters in Torrance, California.

Current Rever users can go directly to the Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge, click “Join” and start tracking every ride. Individuals not currently signed up for Rever can do so for free, join the challenge and start tracking and saving rides. People can also benefit the cause by attending and taking part in the L.A. Ride for Kids in person. Riders, kids and families will gather to check out some cool motorcycles, have a fun motorcycle ride, enjoy lunch and enter to win raffle prizes.

“Ride for Kids is all about channeling what we love to do (riding motorcycles) into a good cause,” said Chuck Boderman, Vice President of American Honda’s Powersports Division. “Rever’s app-based challenge will help increase awareness of the ride and get riders out on two wheels. This challenge will also help riders discover the joy of supporting kids in need through our daily riding adventures.”

“We are so excited about this new partnership with Honda and Rever, which will not only get more people out on their motorcycles, but also raise awareness and funds for kids with brain cancer,” said Kelly Dooley, Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Ride for Kids program. “Thank you to everyone who participates—every mile counts in our pursuit of a cure!”

“We can’t think of a better reason to track a ride in Rever than helping kids with cancer,” said Justin Bradshaw, Rever cofounder and President. “Honda and RFK have done an incredible job over the years, and we are honored to be joining them to help spread the word of such a great cause.”

Challenge Details

The Honda L.A. Ride for Kids Challenge is based on miles tracked in the Rever app between 12 a.m. MST September 20 and 11:59 p.m. MST October 20, 2019. Rides imported from another source or rides that have been planned but not recorded, do not count. This challenge is free to join for any member of Rever, with no purchase necessary. Riders may join the challenge at any point between the start and end dates, but only rides after joining the challenge will be counted. Rides marked private will not count.

Hollywood Electrics Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

Electric motorcycle dealership, Hollywood Electrics is celebrating ten years of business.

Begin Press Release:

#1 Electric Motorcycle Dealership Hollywood Electrics Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

The All-Electric 2-Wheeled Vehicle Dealer Celebrates a Decade of Zero Emissions Riding and Racing

LOS ANGELES Oct. 1, 2019 PRLog Hollywood Electrics, the World’s Leading Electric Motorcycle Dealership, has announced its 10th Anniversary. The Los Angeles-based dealer is #1 in global Electric Motorcycle sales and is known for its premium product selection, custom motorcycles, and award-winning racing team.

Hollywood Electrics began as Founder/CEO Harlan Flagg’s dream of delivering electric two-wheeled vehicles that were easy, fast, and green. “As an electrical engineer and motorcycle enthusiast, Hollywood Electrics was an opportunity for me to combine my passions,” said Flagg. In September 2009, Hollywood Electrics first opened its doors and shortly thereafter became the top electric motorcycle dealer worldwide. Over the past decade, customers have logged over 1 million miles on its electric two-wheeled vehicles.

The year 2009 was a different world, with significantly fewer electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations. Battery technology has progressed, dedicated fast-charging infrastructure has proliferated, and consumer demand has increased for zero-emissions vehicles. Today, every demographic has access to EVs from Teslas to BMWs, and ride-on-demand electric scooters to rentable electric bicycles. The hope of an all-electric zero-emissions future has become a reality, spurred on by EV visionaries and a consumer market that is becoming more eco-conscious.

Alongside its #1 position in Electric Motorcycle sales, Hollywood Electrics offers a high-end product line of aftermarket parts and custom motorcycles. The Hollywood Electrics Motorcycle Racing Team tests these products on a competitive national level. The 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb inspired modification of the then-current Zero S motorcycle with a larger controller, in what would become Zero’s flagship Zero SR in 2014. The Zero FX platform was also modified as a Supermoto for the race, which would eventually become the next flagship: the Zero FXS in 2016. Race data and real-world stress testing led to the development of the Hollywood Electrics Fairing Kits that have proven their worth with the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) and its eMotoRacing Class, where Hollywood Electrics has consistently topped the podiums at locations like Willow Springs Raceway in CA, Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, and Utah Motorsports Park.

As the worldwide Electric Motorcycle community continues to thrive, Hollywood Electrics looks forward to expanding upon its success to date. Hollywood Electrics’ goal is to make electric two-wheeled vehicles as ubiquitous as the internal combustion machines they are steadily replacing. A future of clearer skies, less dependency on oil, and reduced urban congestion awaits, beginning with each individual rider’s simple choice of riding electric motorcycles.

“Australia and New Zealand have always been key strategic markets for Ducati and we believe that it is the right moment to enhance our presence by investing in a National Sales Company. Ducati received from Australia some of our greatest heroes, Troy Corser, Troy Bayliss and Casey Stoner, and it is time for us to return the favor to the market through a subsidiary that will fuel the passion of all Ducatisti even further”

“I am extremely happy and honored to take this responsibility. Ducati has been well represented by NF Importers and I am looking forward to continue the fruitful relationship with them on the retail side. Establishing the subsidiary in Australia and New Zealand will assert the brand’s DNA and values of Ducati, translating them into an enhanced experience for all our Ducatisti across Australia and New Zealand”

Mr. Canovas, for the last three years, had also headed up the team of Ducati India, as Managing Director, successfully positioning Ducati as the most premium and desired motorcycle brand in the market.

NF Importers, the current Ducati importer, started the Ducati distribution in Sydney in 1964, expanding the network throughout the years up to 24 dealerships that today cover the entire continent as well as New Zealand, providing Ducati customers with hubs and points of reference for their passion and needs in terms of service, community and products.

After 55 years of partnership, NF Importers and Ducati together decided to make a step forward to take further advantage of the current state of the Australian market.

“I believe that we have represented the Ducati brand very successfully in good and bad market conditions since 1964 and have established the Ducati brand as one of the predominant prestige motorcycle marques in Australia and more recently New Zealand. We have built the brand together with our Ducati friends from virtually nil in this country to where it is today. We have put an estimated 55,000 Ducati motorcycles into the Australian and New Zealand markets, we have consistently been one of the highest achieving countries in terms of market share and we have built a large and loyal band of Ducatisti”

Pata Yamaha announces Razgatlioglu signing for WorldSBK 2020

Switch from Kawasaki Puccetti Racing made official alongside Van der Mark.

Turkish rising star Toprak Razgatlioglu will join Michael van der Mark at Pata Yamaha from the 2020 Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) season, the move made official by Yamaha Motor Europe.

The 22-year-old won his first WorldSBK race last weekend at Magny-Cours, however, he will switch from Kawasaki Puccetti Racing to the factory Yamaha squad in place of Alex Lowes next year.

“Toprak Razgatlioglu is the most exciting young rider in WorldSBK and I’m both happy and proud that he will race for Yamaha in 2020,” stated Eric de Seynes, president of Yamaha Motor Europe. “When you consider Toprak’s progression this year, only his second in WorldSBK, his prodigious talent is obvious, but so is his warrior spirit.

“Like his teammate for next season, Michael van der Mark, he’s a rider who always finds that little bit extra on race day and is prepared to push to the limit to overcome any obstacle – we saw that clearly in Magny-Cours, where he came from the sixth row of the grid to claim his first WorldSBK race win.

“We have also seen this season that Yamaha has closed the gap to our rivals on track and I’m excited to see what Toprak can do on our Yamaha YZF-R1 in 2020. With Michael and Toprak, I think we will have one of the strongest and most dynamic rider line-ups on the WorldSBK grid next year.”

Razgatlioglu arrived in the WorldSBK paddock in 2015 to contest the European 600 Superstock Championship, which he won in his debut season. A move up the European 1000 Superstock Championship followed, where the young Turkish rider was a title contender for two years before stepping up to the WorldSBK class in 2018.

Last year saw Razgatlioglu secure two podium finishes in his debut season with second place at Donington Park and third place in the penultimate round in Argentina. He has developed even more strongly in 2019, securing his first top-three finish of the season at the Italian WorldSBK round in Imola and finishing on the podium at every round since.

Razgatlioglu secured his maiden WorldSBK win with a scintillating performance in race one at Magny-Cours, which he started from 16th position on the grid. The young Turk backed that up with victory in the Superpole sprint race the following day, before crashing out of race two.

Multi-year Kawasaki MXGP contract confirmed for Febvre

Frenchman to join Desalle in factory Kawasaki Racing Team from 2020.

Former MXGP world champion Romain Febvre’s move to Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team from 2020 has been made official, the Frenchman signing a multi-year contract to pilot the factory KX450.

The 28-year-old will transfer from Yamaha to Kawasaki alongside Belgian Clement Desalle, who will remain with KRT next year for a fifth-straight season.

“We turn to a new page, but the book is still open and there is a new adventure on the horizon!” Febvre commented. “I’m very happy with this choice – it’s never easy to change after five years on the same team, but I’m sure this is the best moment to do it.

“My injury late this season will delay my first days with the team, but I will be even more motivated later this winter when I can get back on a bike again – everyone in the team is highly motivated and I’m impatient to be with them and on the bike.”

Febvre is currently recovering from the broken femur he sustained at the Swedish round of MXGP. Prior to that in 2019 he took a double victory in the Czech Republic for the overall, won four motos in total and earned five GP podiums.

“As far as my injury is concerned it’s taking a long time, of course, but everything is going as planned by the medical staff,” he explained. “I will soon have the first examination six weeks after surgery – we’ll see how it is with the femur and we’ll be able to make our plans for the rehabilitation.

“I will take a longer winter break than usual, but patience is the only option and I don’t want to endanger any stage, so I will be able to start testing in good conditions and to open this new chapter of my career on a good basis. The team is 100 per cent behind me, they have a strong experience of racing and I’m sure we’ll achieve great things together.”

KRT team owner Thierry Chizat Suzzoni commented: “We are very happy to welcome Romain to the team alongside Clement. Both have a lot of experience and I’m convinced that they will join forces to cooperate and get the best from our Kawasaki – it’s a great bike which both of them will want to put on the podium.

“We know that Romain always gives 100 per cent and we confidently expect that both he and Clement will put the bike in the leading pack. It gives us great satisfaction to see one of this season’s GP winners so enthusiastic to join us. We are confident that the new KX450 has a huge potential. It’s a winning bike and we now have two GP winners on the team to show that to the world.”
