Royal Enfield reveal SG650 Concept with a classic ‘Bobber’ look

Royal Enfield SG650

The SG650 Concept is the result of a challenge set to Royal Enfield’s Industrial Design Team by Mark Wells, Chief of Design at Royal Enfield and the man largley responsible for steering the model/design strategy for Royal Enfield over the past seven years.

Royal Enfield call the SG650 a ‘concept’ model, but you can bet your bottom rupee that this will make it to market in the next 12-18 months, if not before.

Royal Enfield SG650

Mark Wells – Royal Enfield Head, Product Strategy & Industrial Design

We are a company in transition – so long a representation of the analog age and now developing new products that keep that same pure soul yet are fully integrated into the digital present. To celebrate this, we wanted to develop a project that really gave our design team an opportunity to stretch themselves creatively. The goal : to build a unique concept motorcycle that pays homage to Royal Enfield’s rich history of custom motorcycles, but one that wasn’t encumbered by the past. A neo-retro interpretation that pushes the boundaries of what a Royal Enfield motorcycle could look like, but at its core still celebrating that iconic Royal Enfield DNA.

“The advances of today are often inspired by the imaginations of the past – the mobile phone, the smart watch or even space travel. That desire to look forward with optimism and imagine the possibilities is fundamental to the progression of our culture. And so we started this concept with a context rather than a question – imagining a world in the not so distant future and our brand’s place in it. A cyber, neon saturated, urban jungle took shape – where old meets new in a tangle of concrete, metal, bright lights and shadowy streets, where the analog and the digital intertwine and blend – setting that felt both familiar and alien to us, and in doing so foster an environment that would force us to think differently about how we approached the aesthetics of a #royalenfield motorcycle.

“We believe that the resultant concept motorcycle, unveiled for the first time at EICMA 2021, inhabits this world fantastically well and offers up something very new, very original and entirely unique to fans of the brand and motorcycle enthusiasts more widely. The design team have done an amazing job in retaining the analog soul – those classic Royal Enfield lines and design nuances – subtle nods to the past – while creatively pushing the boundary of what the Royal Enfield’s of tomorrow could conceptually represent in form and function.”

Royal Enfield SG650

Adrian Sellers, Group Manager, Industrial Design and lead for the SG650 Concept project

We’re really excited to unveil this concept and write another chapter in the rapidly evolving story of Royal Enfield design. It is always exciting to design for a “What if…” scenario, and the brief to create a motorcycle that would both be recognizably Royal Enfield but at the same time push what a Royal Enfield could be was a real challenge. This was a wonderfully collaborative and rewarding project to develop, as it required the creative input of many different aspects of the design team – from Industrial Design to Color Trim and Graphics and CGI – each contributed a piece of the puzzle to bring this other world to life.

“The key concept of transition is conveyed throughout the motorcycle; from the choice of aesthetic finishes, to the materials that we used. From the heritage-inspired polished aluminium front end, flowing into the futuristic, digital graphic on the tank – this was about bringing the old and the new together and resulting in something timeless.

“There are some really special elements to this motorcycle that are a first for a Royal Enfield concept – many of the component parts have been individually, one-off fabricated or designed exclusively for this motorcycle. The tank has been CNC billet machined from a solid block of aluminium, as have the wheel rims with integrated ABS, bespoke designed brake calipers, and dual front brake disks. The upside down forks, integrated aluminium top yoke / nacelle unit and low rise extra-wider bars with all aluminium switch cubes all add elements of originality and design progression to the concept – while the twin rear shocks, mounted to the classic chassis loop, hand stitched black leather floating solo seat are a clear nod to our past. Graphically, the black out 650 Twin engine and exhaust system compliment our imagined near future, while the polished aluminum forms transitioning with a “digital transformation” graphic across the motorcycle speak to the progression of the brand. We’re delighted with the end result and truly believe this brings something completely new, in our 120th anniversary year, to the ever developing story of Royal Enfield.

Aprilia to power new North America Talent Cup

Aprilia RS250SP2-based Road to MotoGP series launches in US

The Road to MotoGP will expand in 2022, with the introduction of the North America Talent Cup in the USA, which will be a collaborative effort between MotoAmerica and Rise Moto, with Aprilia RS250SP2 machinery used for the single-make series.

The North America Talent Cup will look to follow the success of the Aprilia Sport Production Championship in Europe (pictured)

The new North America Talent Cup will aim to provide riders across the continent with a link on the Road to MotoGP program, creating the stepping-stone between the FIM MiniGP North America Series and the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup or FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship. The sanctioning body will be the American Motorcyclist Association and FIM North America.

Wayne Rainey – MotoAmerica President

“The new North America Talent Cup will most definitely help us with our goal of developing more young riders who aspire to compete and represent the U.S. internationally, and we’re happy to be working with Dorna, Aprilia and Rise Moto to help make this happen. This program ensures that we will continue to build a system where young racers can advance their talents in a program designed to give them the tools they need to succeed. We look forward to the first race at Circuit of The Americas in April and to having the North America Talent Cup join us in our season finale at Barber Motorsports Park in September.”

Aprilia RS250SP and SP2 machinery has been in use for a similar purpose in Europe for a while with great success

Riders will race on equal Aprilia RS250SP2 machinery and be between 13 and 16 years of age for the first season, with the minimum age raising to 14 from 2023 – as it will be globally for similar competitions.

Massimo Rivola – CEO of Aprilia Racing

“The North America Talent Cup, as a forge of future talent, fully reflects Aprilia’s racing philosophy of training technicians and riders who have gone on to make sports motorcycling history. Promising young American talent can count on a product we are proud of, the RS 250 SP2, already extremely popular as an intermediate step between MiniGP bikes and ‘high wheel’ bikes, thanks to its combination of performance and easy operation. I’m certain that we’ll see fun and educational races truly capable of launching new talent.”

Aprilia Racing Technical Director Romano Albesiano (L) with Rise Moto CEO Brandon Cretu

The Aprilia RS250SP is already in use in the Aprilia Sport Production Championship in Europe, as part of the CIV or Italian Speed Championship, offering a Junior event with riders aged over 11 able to get started track racing. The RS250SP used there was developed by Aprilia Racing in collaboration with Ohvale.

Both SP and SP2 versions of the bike are powered by 250 cc four-stroke engines, while running components from Öhlins, Brembo, SC Project and Marchesini to name a few.

North America Talent Cup Equipment & Partners

Riders will race on equal Aprilia RS250SP2 machinery, with an affordable, complete race package to be priced especially for competitors.

The sole, official tire supplier will be Dunlop. Seven sets of tires will be provided per rider, per season.

KYT will be the helmet provider, providing two helmets per rider per season along with trackside support.

2022 North America Talent Cup Calendar

The North America Talent Cup will be run across the USA as an Amateur National Series. The series will be limited to 20 riders for the first year with aims to expand the amount of riders permitted to 26 by 2023.

The season opener is planned to take place alongside MotoGP at the Circuit of the Americas. The remaining rounds will be held in partnership with AMA sanctioned racing organization WERA, and the final round will be with MotoAmerica at their season finale at Barber Motorsports Park.

Road to MotoGP Opportunities

Riders accepted into the North American Talent Cup will benefit from trackside coaching at each round from professional riders, as well as training in communication, fitness and nutrition.

The Champion of FIM MiniGP North America Series will automatically gain a place on the North America Talent Cup grid the following season.

The top two in each season of the North America Talent Cup will be invited to take part in the selection event for the following season of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

North America Talent Cup Applications

Applications for the inaugural Cup will open on the 1st of December and close on the 31st of December 2021. Find out more about the new series, and how to apply, at www.northamericatalentcup.com.

Carmelo Ezpeleta – CEO of Dorna Sports

“We are delighted to announce this new project with Rise Moto and MotoAmerica, creating a vital new path on the Road to MotoGP. With the incredible success of the first FIM MiniGP World Series, we are more committed than ever to creating the best possible pathway for young riders from all over the world to further their careers, and the new North America Talent Cup, along with the MotoAmerica Championship, will complete the Road to MotoGP for riders across that continent. The support of Aprilia sees a new manufacturer become a key player on the Road to MotoGP, and all our partners will ensure the series is competitive and affordable — removing as many barriers as we can for those who wish to begin a career in racing and ensuring young talent has the best possible stage on which it can shine.”

Rob Dingman – AMA and FIM North America President

“The North America Talent Cup is a perfect complement to MotoAmerica’s development efforts and will provide a critical element to the development of young road racers in North America.”

Bayliss flying solo at The Bend due to Mike Jones not wanting to get vaccinated

Oli Bayliss set to battle at The Bend

Oli Bayliss will be the sole rider to line up at The Bend on the DesmoSport Ducati for the final round of the 2021 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) on December 3-5 after it has been confirmed that Mike Jones is unable to travel to South Australia with the team.

DesmoSport Ducati personnel attend to the V4 R of Oli Bayliss on the grid – Image RbMotoLens

Ben Henry – Team Co-Owner

“I’m disappointed to not finish our season with Mike on the bike. His pace in Darwin was strong and he would have been challenging for race wins at The Bend, but we can’t change the situation, so all our attention will be on Oli and of course, supporting Jack (Miller) where required over the weekend. This will be the first time we get to see Oli race the Panigale V4 R on a long, open and flowing track and if anything, I think it will suit his style even more than Darwin so I’m confident we’ll finish the season strong.”

Ben Henry – DesmoSport Ducati – Image Half Light

Mike Jones

“Disappointingly, I’m unable to compete at The Bend due to the new double vaccination requirement for this round. It’s a shame for many reasons, but mostly because all the training, preparation and hard work is wasted, and of course it’s a bit sad I won’t get the last dance with the Ducati Panigale V4 R and the team. I felt great on the bike in Darwin before my crash, and even the racing we did at the Southern Downs Series gave me a lot of confidence that I could race for the win at The Bend, so I’m disappointed to not line up there. I’d really like to thank Ben and Troy for the opportunities and support over my time with DesmoSport Ducati, and now I look towards new opportunities in 2022.”

Oli Bayliss

“I’ve had some time off the bike over the last few weeks after finishing school, so I’m looking forward to getting back into it and going racing again, especially at The Bend, it’s such a cool track. I love the Panigale V4 R, I even rode it to my formal a few weeks ago, so to have my last ride on it at The Bend before moving to the Panigale V2 is going to be great and I’m confident that I can give Ben, Dad, Byron, Bryan and everyone at DesmoSport a strong finish to the year. We’ve got Jack in the truck and pit box with us over the weekend too. It’s pretty awesome to be able to share the track and race a current MotoGP factory-level rider, it’s great for the series and it’s great for racing fans to have an opportunity to see Jack ride here again, and hopefully also show even more people just how good the racing is in the ASBK.”

Herfoss tests at Winton/Wakefield in quest to get strong enough to race at The Bend

Troy Herfoss Interview

Penrite Honda’s Troy Herfoss is continuing to recover from those massive hip and shoulder injuries he sustained at Hidden Valley, five months ago almost to the day.

Herf’ had some subsequent setbacks after the first bout of surgery and went under the knife again three months ago (August).

We last spoke to Herfoss about five weeks ago (Oct) where he stated that he was eager to try and make the ASBK finale at The Bend.

Troy Herfoss at Winton yesterday – Image by Carlo Parisella

The 34-year-old turned some laps last week at Wakefield Park and again this week at Winton, in the company of World Endurance star Josh Hook, who will make a guest appearance for Penrite Honda at The Bend.

Josh Hook and Troy Herfoss at Winton yesterday – Image by Carlo Parisella

Troy Herfoss Recovery Update Interview

Trevor Hedge: I believe you rode the bike last week and then got a little bit more serious today at Winton?

Troy Herfoss: “That’s right, I’ve done a couple of laps at Wakefield, just to make sure its possible, and then let my body rest for a few days, to see how I felt. Then I rode again today, I didn’t really – not full commitment, but I did more laps today than the first day that’s for sure.”

Trev: How did you go moving around the bike, etc.

Herfoss: “It’s still not great, it’s hard to move on the bike really. I have to shimmy across and I’m just really weak and it hurts at the moment.”

Trev: I imagine it will hurt more tomorrow.

Herfoss: “I think so, I pulled up pretty good from Wakefield, but really it’s like I’d been to the gym for the first time in my life, and that was only a couple of laps. I imagine the next few days will be interesting.”

Trev: I know when we last spoke a few weeks ago, you said if you could manage it you would love to race at The Bend, and maybe even solidify that second place in the championship, or third if you could bring some top 10 finishes home. What do you think your chances are?

Herfoss: “I don’t really know what I’m going to be doing yet. In all honesty, following a couple of guys today for a lap here and there, I’ve got to think about their safety too. I’m not very strong on the bike and the last thing I need to do is crash, and the absolute last thing I want to do is be weak on the bike and take some other poor guy out… So at the moment it’s just a really really big mental fight with myself to work out what I want to do. I really want to race but you know, I want to be competitive. So we’ll wait and see.”

Troy Herfoss at Winton yesterday – Image by Carlo Parisella

“I just don’t know what I’m going to be doing, if I had to say today, I’d probably say I wouldn’t – I probably wouldn’t be racing, but two weeks is a long time. In the last few weeks I’ve come a long way, so I just don’t know where I’m at.”

Trev: So you’d love to, but just not sure you’ll be strong enough. If you are strong enough you’ll have a crack, is that a good way to sum it up?

Herfoss: “I don’t just want to go there just to conserve second in the championship, I want to be competitive, and there’s all these great reasons to be there in my mind, so I’ve just got to work out if its possible.”

Trev: Would you describe The Bend as a particularly physical track?

Herfoss: “You know what? No. The reason is because when you go to Wakefield or Winton, the bike is capable of doing a lap time the whole time, so really it’s whoever can physically get around that track the best. Whereas traditionally Tailem Bend is not like that.

“If we can get the bike to where I can save the tyre, then physically that track is not hard to ride, because guys definitely have a lot of trouble towards the end of the race. So if we go there this year and the tyres do hold up, it will be quite a physical race. But there is a possibility it could be a tyre war again and that could benefit us. That could make it a lot less physical for me.”

Trev: Well all the best, I hope you don’t pull up too sore. Any plans to get back on the bike again before the Bend?

Herfoss: “No, I’m basically just now trying to get moving in the limbs in the next few weeks, to get stronger and just trying to get a bit more comfortable in certain positions. That was the best part about the last two days. Just getting my body in certain positions it’s not used to being in, and seeing how it reacts to it.”

Trev: You’ll have to get out there doing yoga with the hippies on the beach at Byron in the mornings mate…

Herfoss: “That’s probably exactly what I need.” *laughs*

Trev: Best travels and hopefully I’ll see you at The Bend.

Herfoss: “One things for sure, I’ll be there watching even if it turns out that I can’t race.”

Yamaha YZF-R6 a track only ‘Race’ model for Australia in 2022

2022 Yamaha YZF-R6 Race

2022 Yamaha YZF-R6 Race

Yamaha have introduced a new race ready YZF-R6 for 2022 and you can have it any colour you like, as long as it’s black… But they will only be coming Down Under in very small numbers, and only in the more base spec’ of the two offerings that have been released overseas.

2022 Yamaha YZF-R6 Race

Some markets will have two options, a full GYTR race kitted version straight from the dealer, or as in our case, a more standard version that is essentially a regular YZF-R6, but in race fairings with no road gear on it.

2022 Yamaha YZF-R6 Race

And this is now the only way you can buy an R6 as they are no longer being sold for registered road use via the Australian Yamaha dealership network.

2022 Yamaha YZF-R6 Race

Yamaha have dominated World Supersport competition in recent years but next season the World Supersport Championship will have its biggest shake-up since its inception. No doubt the new YZF-R6 Race GYTR model is aimed at helping to stave off the looming onslaught from Ducati and others as the series opens up to larger twin-cylinder motorcycles in 2022.  Organisers will use various methods to try and artificially achieve parity, including torque mapping the engines to reduce outputs at various RPM to try and level the playing field somewhat, but it will be very interesting to see how season 2022 pans out…

Yamaha enjoy record breaking road race success across the globe in 2021

A year to remember for Yamaha

Yamaha has had an astonishing year in the FIM Superbike World Championship in 2021, with Toprak Razgatlıoğlu leading the manufacturer to a Superbike victory which came right down to the line in Indonesia, with just 13-points separating Toprak and Rea. But it didn’t stop there, with Yamaha also wrapping up every other title in the WorldSBK and Supersport World Championships.

Toprak Razgatlioglu

On Sunday morning at the Mandalika International Street Circuit, Razgatlıoğlu crossed the line in second place in Race 1, ensuring he was crowned the 2021 WorldSBK champion, the first for a Turkish rider and Yamaha’s first since Ben Spies won in 2009.

Toprak Razgatlioglu

The 25-year-old ended the season with 13 victories, 29 podiums and three pole positions, following a history-making title battle with Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea.

Razgatlıoğlu and rookie teammate Andrea Locatelli’s sensational performances saw the Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK team crowned teams’ champions, while Yamaha claimed the manufactures’ title for the first time since 2007 thanks to the efforts of all the riders and teams.

The GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team were the top Independent Team, courtesy of Independent Riders’ champion Garrett Gerloff and teammate Kohta Nozane, who scored a best result of seventh at the Indonesian finale to cap off his maiden season.

Garrett Gerloff

Rookie of the Year was awarded to Locatelli, who took four podium finishes on his way to fourth overall in the riders’ championship, which marks Yamaha’s highest finishing rookie since 2011.

Dominique Aegerter had already claimed the WorldSSP riders’ title at the penultimate round in Argentina, becoming the ninth Yamaha rider to be crowned champion, winning 10 races and finishing on the podium 16 times.

Yamaha had sealed their fifth consecutive WorldSSP manufacturers’ championship at Jerez, while the battle for the teams’ title went down to the wire, with the Ten Kate Yamaha WorldSSP Supported Team coming out on top.

Evan Bros Yamaha WorldSSP Supported Team’s Steven Odendaal and ParkinGO Yamaha’s Manuel Gonzalez finished second and third in the championship, while Kevin Manfredi was the WorldSSP Challenge winner.

Steven Odendaal

Andrea Dosoli – Yamaha Motor Europe Road Racing Manager

“It has been an amazing season, a word that doesn’t justify how good this year has been. The Triple Crown in the FIM Superbike World Championship is something that means a lot. I believe it’s been the best-ever season in WorldSBK history. I don’t remember a season where three riders and three manufacturers are fighting every single lap, every single race for the podium.

Toprak Razgatlioglu

“The level of competition has been so high, so I must congratulate Toprak and the team for a fantastic job. Toprak didn’t make any mistakes and he has been very well supported by a strong team. After a difficult season in 2020, even though it’s been tough to get here, we’ve been able to better understand what the riders need to be on the podium.

Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jonathan Rea

“We established a very efficient way of working, so thanks to the engineers, Yamaha in Japan, Toprak and the team. It has been 12 years since we won the riders’ title, but since coming back we’ve been able to improve step-by-step and what makes this year so special is that the level of competition is like never seen before. It means a lot to all of us.

Garrett Gerloff

“I would like to congratulate Garrett and the GRT Yamaha team on the Independent Riders’ and Teams’ titles. It has not been an easy season, but this is a great achievement that I’m sure they will build on for next year. What a year also for Andrea, who was fourth in the overall standings in his first season, while he was also named top rookie. This shows Yamaha’s step-up program is really working well and we’re excited for the future.

Andrea Locatelli – Image by 2snap

“Also, at the national level we have been very successful, winning BSB, MotoAmerica, JSB, and others, which shows how good the Yamaha R1 package is. It has not only been a fantastic year for Yamaha in WorldSBK, but also in WorldSSP where we won the title as a manufacturer, rider and team, so another Triple Crown for us there. Congratulations to Dominique, Ten Kate Yamaha, and of course all the Yamaha teams who did such an excellent job.”

Odendaal, Aegerter, Gonzalez

Not only did Yamaha clean up in World Superbike and World Supersport, but they also won the 2021 British Superbike Championship (Tarran Mackenzie), the MotoAmerica Championship (Jake Gagne), along with the biggest prize of them all, the MotoGP World Championship with Fabio Quartararo.

Then off-road we had the Motocross Championships – Dylan Ferrandis winning the 450 AMA Motocross Championship, and the World MX2 Title was bagged by Maxime Renaux.   In the 250SX West Yamaha’s Justin Cooper also followed up his 2020 win with another title in 2021, while Colt Nichols took out the 2021 250SX East, also on a YZ250F. Curiously three of those biggest titles were won by Frenchmen, Quartararo in MotoGP, Ferrandis in AMA MX and Renaux in MX2.. So not only a good year for Yamaha, but a good year for the French too!

Tony Cairoli’s World Championship boots up for auction

Tony Cairoli’s World Championship boots are being auctioned off for charity, with the Sidi No. 222 of the Atojo LTD listed on the Catawiki online platform, in size 43. The proceeds will go to support Two Wheels For Life, supporting motorcyclists in very remote communities to save and improve lives in Africa, delivering much needed health care.

Unfortunately no shipping is available if you’re in Australia and interested.

Tony Cairoli

“I know I’ve been lucky, I could follow my passion and make a job out of it and an important part of my life. Of course I’ve faced and managed some difficult situations, I’ve made some sacrifices, but I think I’ve really been privileged,’ says the champion from Patti. ‘I am particularly fond of these boots. They are the result of a special collaboration with #sidi and an undisputed evolution in motorbike boots. There were a few points we wanted to bring out and we succeeded. They’re definitely my favourite boots and I’m happy that someone can buy them at the auction and help us support someone in need.”

Tom Pagès launches double front flip off cliff in Avoriaz

Pagès decided to bridge the two different sporting seasons with an audacious stunt in Avoriaz, which follows speedriding pioneer Valentin Delluc’s memorable stunt last year that went viral globally.

The 36-year-old – who also has five X Games gold medals, two silvers and a bronze – wanted to combine freestyle motocross (FMX) and parachuting in a thrilling world-first project that would see him launch a double front flip off an Avoriaz cliff, land with a parachute and ride away.

Tom Pagès

“I enjoy parachuting in my spare time, when I’m not riding. I took it step by step. I started training in a wind tunnel, then skydiving in 2015 with the Soul Flyers – Vince Reffet and Fred Fugen. Next came my initiation to BASE jumping from a helicopter, then from a bridge on Reunion Island with Loïc Jean Albert (air sports pioneer). Afterwards I learned to jump from a cliff with Aurélien Chatard aka Bras Noir (Black Arm). I was petrified by the idea, but I couldn’t help imagining what it would be like jumping on a motorcycle. In 2020, I went to Dubai with this in mind, but COVID hit so everything was put on standby until March. Finally with the support of my sponsors and, in spite of the complexity of the project, I’ve had the opportunity to realise my dream.”

After a three-trick freestyle run on the pedestrian streets of the famous Alpine resort, Pagès shifted into fourth gear and accelerated up a seven-metre high ramp (standard ramp averages 2m70) at 80km/h.

He shot out over 55m from the cliff, doing a double front flip in the air then free falling on his motorcycle at 150 km/h before deploying his parachutes for the landing 30 seconds later and 170 m below.

Australian Supercross Championship (AUS SX) to return in late 2022

The Australian Supercross Championship (AUS SX) has been officially postponed, with a series return planned for late 2022. Continued border restrictions, evolving stadium requirements, and key industry stakeholders preferring a fully-fledged return to racing, has led the decision.

Australian SX Rnd Melbourne Yamaharace
Aus SX 2019

Since the pandemic began, promoters, industry partners and stakeholders have navigated a multitude of scheduling options to get racing back underway. The most recent proposal considered a three-round condensed (2021) Championship in January/February 2022 however restrictions made it untenable.

Event organisers will now focus on the 2022 series with exciting plans already underway for Australia’s most prestigious motorcycle championship.

Director of AUS SX Holdings, the commercial rights holder of AUS SX, Adam Bailey believes it’s imperative Supercross has a secure and stable pathway to ensure a successful return.

Adam Bailey – Director of AUS SX Holdings

“Like all live sport and entertainment events, the last two years have been an incredibly challenging period for Supercross. After the record-breaking end to 2019 with 35,000 fans at Marvel Stadium for the AUS-X Open, we are itching to get back to racing, and build on this success/swell of interest in the sport. The heartbreaking decision was made after discussions with key stakeholders including sponsors, government partners, racing teams and Motorcycling Australia – our priority is ensuring we have a successful and prosperous return to racing, and will now do this in 2022.”

** Details for the emphatic return of the FOX Australian Supercross Championship will be announced in early 2022 **

Beaton returns to F&H Kawasaki Racing Team in 2022

Jed Beaton returns to the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team next year as he moves up to contest the premier MXGP class of the FIM Motocross World Championships for the first time.

Having already shown his potential in 2016 when he travelled from his native Tasmania to Europe to replace an injured rider in the European championships, Jed joined the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team two years later to contest the MX2 World Championship for the first time.

Jed Beaton in Portugal in 2018

After regularly posting top eight results during the early rounds of his rookie season Jed claimed the team’s first-ever World Championship podium with a third position in the Portuguese GP at Agueda. Holding fifth in the series after eight rounds he unfortunately suffered a broken leg at the British GP and was forced to miss the remainder of the season.

Ranked top-five in the MX2 World Championship in each of the last two seasons after scoring a further six GP podiums the Australian opens another chapter in his career in 2022 as, having reached the age-related cut-off of twenty-three, he transfers to the MXGP class with the Dutch F&H Kawasaki Racing Team based in Moordrecht.

Jed Beaton

”I am really excited to sign again with F&H Kawasaki Racing Team. We have achieved great things together in the past and I feel like we can now do the same in the MXGP class; it’s a big step for both myself and the team but we are both excited and ready for it.”

Jed Beaton

Nathalie Fase – F&H Kawasaki Team Manager

“We are very much looking forward to our renewed collaboration with Jed as he has always been part of our family. The fact that Jed returns to us says something about our mutual trust and the bond we have with each other. In 2018 we achieved our first MX2 podium with him, and we hope to take on this exciting challenge together in the MXGP class. We are confident that it will once again be a great collaboration with each other. We all can’t wait to get started!”

Steve Guttridge – Racing Manager Kawasaki Motors Europe

“Adding Jed to the MXGP line up on our KX450 inside the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team is an exciting prospect! The team continue to gain big experience and learn quickly each season and so for KME to add more green back into the MXGP start line, inside a top team and with talented rider combination, was the way forward for the 2022 season.”

Dean Ferris ready for AMX MX Open return with Factory Honda

It’s less than a month until Dean Ferris returns to full-time competition, where he will saddle up on the CRF450R at the AMX MX OPEN with Factory Honda.

The three-time Australian national MX1 champion grew up riding motorbikes on his parents’ farm, where he mustered cattle. This first taste of life on two wheels lit a fire in him that would prove difficult to extinguish.

A crash in training back in August 2020, where he sustained fractures from T4 through to T7 and 10 broken ribs, became the catalyst for Ferris’s decision to retire.

After months of rehabilitation, Ferris got back on the bike and acknowledges its positive impact on his journey to recovery, both physically and mentally.

Dean Ferris

“I loved my first race when I was 11 and ever since then I have just loved racing, sure there are some ups and downs, and the business of racing can wear on you, but nothing compares to a gate drop, and wanting to win and better yourself. After that crash I kept thinking of my family, they rely on me as a dad and a husband. You need to be selfish when you’re competing in any sport at the highest level, the risks can be high so I made the call to retire. There were many people who thought my decision was premature, but I wrestled with it for a while and it was right for how I felt at that exact moment.

Dean Ferris back with Factory Honda in 2022
Dean Ferris

“There were some dark times, as racing has been a big part of my life. Getting on the bike was the best medicine, I realised that I still have more left in me and felt like myself again. I spoke to my wife Renae and told her I wasn’t feeling any pain. We then talked about racing again and decided racing is what we love doing as a family, my two girls love riding as well so we are completely invested in my return. I couldn’t do it without their support and I encourage everyone to do what makes them happiest.”

Honda Australia’s off road racing director Yarrive Konsky admits he didn’t think this opportunity would ever present itself again.

Yarrive Konsky

“I have admired Dean’s abilities and results from afar. I had a feeling he might return to racing, but I respected his decision to retire as he respects the efforts everyone is required to put in to take someone of his calibre racing and he didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. I am proud he has chosen Honda, and I am looking forward to the season ahead.”

Aaron Tanti joins Clout at CDR Yamaha Monster Energy for 2022

The signing of the 25-year-old Aaron Tanti is an exciting addition to the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team as a tough, reliable and determined competitor who is equally skilled in both motocross and supercross.

Aaron Tanti

He appeared on the radar of Craig Dack, owner of CDR Yamaha, over the last two seasons as he continued his climb up the ladder based on hard work and a ‘never say die’ attitude on the track.

Aaron Tanti

“Every year I set a goal to improve my position not just on the track, but also off it, so I give myself every opportunity at success. Signing with CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team for 2022 means I now have the best team around me with the best people and best bike in the YZ450F, so my goals are then elevated to match that on the track. It’s always been a long-term goal of mine to ride for the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team but now that has become a reality, the real work has only just begun. They leave no stone unturned with the bike, so it’s now up to me to ensure I do the same with my training and preparation and I’m all in for 2022. I can’t wait to get the year started and develop a relationship with Craig and everyone on the team. I already have a friendship with Luke and I’m sure we can work well together to elevate both of us and make 2022 a success for the team.”

Aaron Tanti
Aaron Tanti

Luke Clout will remain with the team as he wants to build on the momentum started in 2021. Clout claimed the 2021 Pro MX Championship, his first 450cc national success, and is aiming even higher in 2022 with the industry optimistic a full and regular season can be completed in 2022.

Luke Clout

“Despite the Covid issues we all faced over the last two years, 2021 was good to me in that I was able to secure my first national 450cc championship. The goal at the start of the year was to win both Pro MX and ASX championships and that won’t change for 2022. Great riders are successful at both and win motocross and supercross championships. We have great chemistry in the team and the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team has always had a winning culture. I plan on keeping that going in 2022 and the break in racing has only motivated me more.”

Luke Clout

The duo of Clout and Tanti sees the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team enter 2022 with two serious and legitimate contenders at every event they compete at. The pairing has Dack excited for what’s to come.

Craig Dack

“For 2022 we have two riders in the prime of their careers in terms of age and experience, two riders who are fit athletes and take their riding and training seriously and two riders that are happy to do what it takes for success. We look forward to getting out teeth stuck into the coming season and all going well, 2022 will be a complete calendar and racing restored to normal. The team are excited with the rider line-up as our are partners and sponsors so now its full steam ahead and everyone focussed on a successful 2022 season at the CDR Yamaha Monster Team.”

Zach Osborne retires from professional MX and SX citing health issues

Zach Osborne has announced his retirement from professional motocross and supercross racing, citing issues in getting back to peak fitness. Over the last seven years, the 32-year-old has secured four major U.S. championships and countless triumphs with the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team.

Zach Osborne

Known for his tenacity and never-give-up mentality, Osborne has established himself as a fan favorite over the years while amassing an impressive list of accomplishments together with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing. Beginning a tenacious run in 2017 aboard the FC 250, Osborne swept both the 250SX Eastern Championship and the AMA 250MX Championship in the same season before returning to successfully defend his 250SX Eastern title in 2018.

Zach Osborne – Image by Jeff Kardas

He stepped up to the premier 450 class in 2019 and he quickly hit his stride on the FC 450 ROCKSTAR EDITION, finishing on the podium seven times (six in motocross, one in supercross) during his rookie season. He went on to secure his first-career 450SX Main Event win at the Salt Lake City SX finale in 2020 and he set fire throughout the summer claiming the 450MX Championship in what would ultimately serve as his last full season of racing due to an ongoing back injury throughout 2021. Ending his career on a high note with plenty to be proud of, Husqvarna Motorcycles sends a big congratulations to Zach on a successful career.

Zach Osborne – Image by Jeff Kardas

Zach Osborne

“After 16 years of professional racing, the time has come for me to call it a career. I’ve tried everything in my power over the last six months to get my health back up to the standard it needs to be to race at the highest level and after just a few weeks of riding supercross at full intensity, I realised it just wasn’t meant to be. I’m so grateful for the journey I’ve had as a professional. I’ve met so many incredible people and been a part of some of the finest organizations in motorsports. This was not an easy decision, or one I took lightly, but it was the right decision. I’m forever grateful to my family, fans and teams for their support throughout my time as a professional. In the next chapter, I want to focus my time more on giving back to those who have given to me.”

Husqvarna and IceOne Racing part ways after eight years

Husqvarna Motorcycles have thanked IceOne Racing for its dedication and professionalism throughout the rewarding eight-year partnership that delivered notable success in the FIM Motocross World Championship. With the 2021 racing season reaching its conclusion, the official relationship between Husqvarna Motorcycles and IceOne Racing now draws to a close.

Arminas Jasikonis and Thomas Kjer Olsen

Officially representing Husqvarna Motorcycles in the MXGP class since the 2014 season, IceOne Racing, run by former Grand Prix racer Antti Pyrhönen, has enjoyed many achievements on the world stage.

Antti Pyrhönen – Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MXGP Team Manager

“Personally, and on behalf of Kimi Räikkönen and IceOne Racing, I want to say a big thank you to Husqvarna Motorcycles, to Robert Jonas and Pit Beirer for the great years together, and the fantastic opportunity they gave us, which became an almost decade-long working relationship. We always pushed hard together, and we were always proud partners. I also want to say thank you to all great people who work so hard inside motorsports in Austria. Now is the time for a new chapter for IceOne Racing but, like we know, respect, friendship, and memories live forever.”

In 2016, Max Nagl claimed third overall in the MXGP World Championship with Gautier Paulin replicating the same feat the following year as both riders clearly demonstrated the true capabilities of FC 450 machinery.

Undoubtedly, the team’s most prosperous season came in 2017. With Paulin placing third in the MXGP World Championship, Nagl claimed eighth with Max Anstie close behind in ninth.

The year was underlined by further success at the FIM Motocross of Nations where Anstie dominated both races at the biggest motocross event in the world to round out a truly remarkable season for the team.

Arminas Jasikonis

Since that highly memorable year, Pauls Jonass placed sixth overall in the 2019 MXGP World Championship while Arminas Jasikonis secured his debut moto win during the 2020 season.

Robert Jonas – Vice President Motorsports Offroad

“Husqvarna Motorcycles has enjoyed a fantastic relationship with IceOne Racing since the brand returned to the FIM Motocross World Championship in 2014. Antti and his team have been an excellent partner, always showing incredible professionalism and commitment to everything they do. The team has really helped grow the Husqvarna Motorcycles brand thanks to the many notable achievements of its riders in MXGP, in turn also helping us develop our range of motocross machines. It has been a tremendous partnership throughout the last eight years, and on behalf of everyone at Husqvarna Motorcycles I would like to sincerely wish the whole team all the very best for the future.”

Toni Bou claims 30th title in Barcelona with X-Trial win

Toni Bou is on top of the world after having claimed yet another world title, this time in Barcelona, with a 15th consecutive X-Trial title and the 30th of his career as the legend goes from strength to strength.

Toni Bou crowned 2021 X-Trial Champion

In front of more than 6100 fans and spectators who filled the Olympic Palau Sant Jordi, the Repsol Honda Team rider won convincingly over his rivals to achieve a new career milestone: 15 titles in X-Trial bringing his career total of 30.

Bou, aboard the Montesa Cota 4RT, came out guns blazing in the semi-final to qualify for a final as the newly crowned world champion. In the final, the difficulty of the sections did little to prevent the champion from once again demonstrating his skills as the world’s greatest trial rider.

Toni Bou

Bou’s domination of the world trial scene has now run for fifteen years in a row. As yet nobody has been able to outshine him in this period. During this time Bou has accumulated no less than 194 wins, 69 of them in the indoor competition.

Toni Bou

“Luckily, the mistake in section one just after the start made me get into the trial. From then on, I knew that I had a tough heat with Adam in the same group and I had to do really well. It was another great night at the Palau Sant Jordi. I am very happy and grateful to everyone who has helped me. We’ve worked very hard, we’ve done things very well and that’s the only way to do it. We have long since surpassed our limits, we are living a dream and to have reached 30 consecutive titles is a great achievement. I also want to congratulate Gabriel Marcelli, because he deserved his second place. He works very hard and is a strong rider. He has been doing really well for quite a while now.”

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle offers all-in-one mobile solution

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

For riders who don’t want to invest in a full independent navigation system, with all the ensuing costs, BMW have released the ConnectedRide Cradle, designed to mount a variety of smartphones and offering a host of extra features.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

The ConnectedRide Cradle serves not only as a simple cradle but also offers a navigation map and vehicle data such as lean angle, acceleration, deceleration and much more can be displayed via the BMW Motorrad Connected App using the Multi-Controller.

Thanks to individually adjustable side clamps, the ConnectedRide Cradle is suitable for many different smartphone sizes and charges the smartphone inductively according to the Qi standard with a maximum of 7.5W or wired via a USB-C connection with a maximum of 7.5W (1.5A at 5V). An LED charging indicator (can be switched off) provides information about the phone’s charging status.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

For security, the ConnectedRide Cradle can be locked to the motorcycle’s holder, if the holder supports this.

The ConnectedRide Cradle can also be used on older BMW Motorrad models (e.g. BMW R 1200 GS K50) and fits all BMW Motorrad models equipped with the optional equipment “Preparation for navigation system (option 272)” – as well as models equipped with Multi-Controller and the option of retrofitting the navigation preparation via the BMW Motorrad workshop system (except R 1200 RT, R 1250 RT, K 1600 models).

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

On older motorcycles without a TFT instrument cluster, operation is possible via the control element of the “Preparation for navigation unit SA 272”. The prerequisite for displaying vehicle data is “On-board computer Pro (option 221)”. The ConnectedRide Cradle cannot be used with the Navigator 4-Button Mount Cradle.

In order to be able to fully use the functions described, the BMW Motorrad Connected App version 4.0 or higher must be used. BMW Motorrad recommends that you always install the latest updates to ensure proper functioning.

A Bluetooth connection is required to enable the app to be controlled via the motorcycle’s navigation preparation control element. The smartphone must be equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy version 4.2 at least in order to comply with the security requirements (LE Secure Connections) for the connection. Smartphones with older Bluetooth versions are therefore not supported.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

Bluetooth pairing takes place within the BMW Motorrad Connected App and is only required once during initial setup.

The following smartphones fit in the ConnectedRide Cradle:

  • All mobile phones with the following dimensions:
    • Minimum 130,1×65, 5×6.9mm; maximum 162.5×78,1×8.8mm.
  • The following mobile phones for example.
    • Apple: iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max

Ducati’s 2021 MotoGP season by the numbers

Ducati’s 2021 MotoGP season in review

The 2021 MotoGP season will be one to remember for Ducati as the Italian marque had their most successful season ever as far as podiums on their way to lifting the constructors title.

Jack Miller

With seven victories in MotoGP in 2021, Ducati is the manufacturer that achieved the most successes this year. Eleven is the record of wins obtained by the Italian manufacturer in a single season and dates back to 2007.

Ducati 1-2-3 on the grid at Misano II

2021 was the best year ever for Ducati in terms of podium finishes in MotoGP. Ducati scored 24 podiums with five different riders: Pecco Bagnaia, Jack Miller, Jorge Martín, Johann Zarco and Enea Bastianini. It is a record for Ducati, which has 2019 as its second-best year with 17 podiums.

Pecco Bagnaia

For the first time since its MotoGP debut in 2003, Ducati placed three of its bikes on the podium in a single Grand Prix. This happened in the final round of the 2021 season; the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana won by Pecco Bagnaia ahead of Jorge Martín and Jack Miller.

Jack Miller

Ducati won the Constructors’ Title for the second consecutive year and the third in its MotoGP history. The Ducati Lenovo Team won the MotoGP Teams’ World Title with 433 points. It is the second World Title won by Ducati’s factory team. The first came in 2007 when Ducati also won its first Constructors’ World Title, and Casey Stoner became World Champion.

Jack Miller and Pecco Bagnaia

For the first time in Ducati’s MotoGP history, the front row of the grid at the Grand Prix of Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna was occupied by three Ducati bikes. Bagnaia took pole position in qualifying ahead of team-mate Jack Miller and fellow Ducati rider Luca Marini. The same thing happened in the last Grand Prix of the season where Jorge Martín (Pramac Racing Team) started from pole position, ahead of Bagnaia and Miller.

The Ducati Lenovo Team riders have started from the front row of the grid, from the first two positions, on three occasions this year: at the San Marino GP, the Emilia Romagna GP and the Algarve GP.
