A record sales year for BMW Motorrad across the globe

2021 BMW Motorrad Sales Figures

BMW Motorrad finished the year with a record sales result despite major logistical challenges stemming from the global pandemic. With 194,261 units (+14.8%), 2021 (previous year: 169,272), was the best year since BMW Motorrad was founded

Europe showed strong sales growth in 2021. Italy (16,034 units / +15.2 %), Spain (12,616 units / +14.4 %) and France (19,887 units / +13.4 %) were the most important growth drivers and able to continuously increase their sales figures.  In total, 9,100 more vehicles were delivered in Europe, than in the previous year.

Germany remains by far the largest single market for BMW Motorrad. With 25,972 units sold, BMW Motorrad will again defend its position as the most successful motorcycle manufacturer in the German market in 2021.

The UK’s exit from the EU had no significant impact on BMW sales. With an increase of 26.6% and sales of 9,263 units in Great Britain/Ireland (previous year 7,315 units), the British market is stronger than ever before.

BMW is also continuing to expand in the Asian market. China (14,309 units / +21.4%) is one of the strongest growth and volume markets in Asia with double-digit growth. India continues to develop strongly, posting significant growth of 102.5% and 5,191 units.  In Australia BMW sales were up a sight 0.5 per cent to 2891.

The market in the USA developed very positively for BMW Motorrad in 2021. With 16,030 motorcycles and scooters sold (previous year: 12,135 units), BMW Motorrad achieved an impressive +32.1% growth in the USA.

Sales in Brazil are not growing quite as fast, but they are increasing steadily. With 11,150 vehicles sold (previous year: 10,707 units) and a growth of +4.1%, the South American market is among the top 7 BMW Motorrad markets in 2021.

Sales of the traditionally strong R Series increased significantly overall. Thanks to the new top-of-the-line R 1250 RT tourer and the four emotional BMW cruisers from the R18 model family, sales figures in the flat-twin boxer segment once again grew strongly, accounting for around half of the total 194,261 vehicles sold.

A total of over 60,000 units of the two touring enduros R 1250 GS and GS Adventure alone, were delivered to customers in 2021.  In Australia sales of both the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure models were also up, with 821 sales registered.

In the big-bore Supersports market BMW performs very strongly in Australia with the S 1000 RR the #1 selling sportsbike in Australia by a considerable margin.  The S 1000 XR and F 900 XR sport-touring models also sold well in Australia.

The BMW M 1000 RR was the first true M motorcycle from BMW Motorrad to enter the market in 2021 and 1070 units of the model were sold globally.

Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad

I look forward to 2022 with great confidence as we start the year with what is sure to be the strongest product offering ever. Our four cruiser models from the BMW R 18 model family are entering their first full year of sales together. In addition, in the first few months of 2022 alone, the market launches of the all-electric BMW CE 04 and our four superior six-cylinder models K 1600 GT/GTL/B and Grand America, which have been further improved in all respects, are absolute highlights in our range and will generate a further sales drive in the first half of the year. We also have a lot planned for the second half of 2022, so our customers and fans are in store for a number of surprises.

BMW unveil two new R 18 specials at Verona Motor Bike Expo

BMW R 18 M and BMW R 18 Aurora

These two custom motorcycles borne from the bones of BMW’s R 18 are the result of a collaboration of BMW Motorrad Italy and two different customisers.

BMW R 18 M

The R 18 M is a project developed by Italian Magazine LowRide and created by American Dreams.

The R 18 Aurora, was created by Garage 221 that was engaged by BMW Motorrad Roma.

BMW R 18 M

M is the letter that distinguished the sport versions of BMW four-wheeled models, and today it also includes two-wheeled vehicles.

BMW R 18 M

The source of inspiration for the BMW R 18 M project by the editorial staff of LowRide is the following: the idea is to give the BMW Cruiser a more streamlined and sportier look, avoiding exaggerations and especially without forgetting the reference to the BMW R 18 retro lines.

BMW R 18 M

Stability, long wheelbase and readiness of the 1800 cc big boxer instigate lightning starts and deserve, in our opinion, a sporty and retro look. In the R 18 M design, we find suggestions from BMW Motorrad tradition and cues from the four-wheelers: M stands for Motorsport” as Giuseppe Roncen, director of LowRide and a great expert of the world of specials, described the BMW R 18 M project.

BMW R 18 M

The work has focused on chassis, suspension set-up, bodywork, and accessories, leaving mechanics and electronics unchanged as the natural strengths of the R 18.

Lightened and with a different riding position, the BMW R 18 M promises to be even more fun to ride: “We remain curious to experience its potential. Significantly lightened, the bike should also be easy to handle due to its riding position, which is more compact and forward loaded, without exaggeration.

BMW R 18 M

The R 18 M project was made possible by BMW Italia and was born in the wake of the emotions that this bike can give: a fun cruiser, powerful and lively, with a big heart and an infinite torque.

LowRide has involved some of the best Italian craftsmanship and companies specialised in the sector.

The realisation of the sketches was entrusted to designer Oberdan Bezzi, already a partner of LowRide in the past. He has managed to make it an exciting power cruiser without upsetting the essence of the BMW R 18.

BMW R 18 M

American Dreams handled the assembly and coordinated the work; Elaboratorio, specialising in prototyping and modeling, created tail, tip and fiberglass windshield from scratch.

BMW R 18 M

Carbon Italy handled the head covers, intake ducts, and other carbon fiber details.

BMW R 18 M

The short exhaust pipe, designed to make the line more compact and allow greater lean angles, bears the signature of ER Exhaust Revolution.

The short exhaust pipes also give greater prominence to the splendid uncovered nickel-plated shaft, an evocative detail that deserves to be highlighted.

BMW R 18 M

L.R. Leather covered the saddle in leather, while the paintwork was entrusted to Dox Art Factory.

BMW R 18 M

Rizoma provided mirrors, grips, and universal indicators for the accessories, perfectly in line with the bike’s character.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The idea and desire of Garage 221 to create a custom bike based on the BMW R 18 found its origins a while ago, at the presentation of the bike at EICMA 2019.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The lines of the new BMW cruiser, innovative and at the same time faithfully traditional, deserved “complementary elements and an even more Heritage spirit, starting from the soft lines of the tank to the characteristic shapes of the boxer,” in the opinion of Pier Francesco Marchio of Garage 221.

The project initially focused on the study of the different sections of the bike, keeping in mind the need to connect the new elements in a unique harmony of lines, taking inspiration from the cruisers of the 1970s, which have always particularly involved Pier Francesco “for their impressive aesthetic fluidity.”

BMW R 18 Aurora

Distinctive elements of the BMW R 18 Aurora by Garage 221 are the wraparound fenders and adherent to the wheel, like the “batwing”, to leave space and thus highlight the central area of the bike.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The modifications that led to the R 18 Aurora stem from Garage 221’s experience in the BMW world and indeed all used elements come from other models of BMW Motorrad.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The saddle was borrowed in its entirety from a BMW 1200 C of 2005, the Batwing supports were made using the supports for indicators of a BMW R 100 of 1982 and a part of the rear frame of a BMW K 75 of 1991.

BMW R 18 Aurora

Even for the colour of the body, the code of a 1983 BMW RT 100 was taken as a reference, customising the graphics in its shades and intensity.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The front and rear fender supports, saddle supports, and license plate holder arms are entirely hand-made.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The exhaust pipes were made in collaboration with Leo Vince, for an even more full-bodied and captivating exhaust note. Their design has been specifically studied to give a very personal and muscular line to the central part of the R 18.

BMW R 18 Aurora

The R 18 Aurora’s oil cooler grille gives a classy natural touch, inspired by the grille of BMW’s cars from the 1960s.

BMW R 18 Aurora

It was a lot of hard work,” said Pier Francesco, “but the result is truly stunning. The textured paintwork of the cylinder head covers, the injection housings, the central crankcase and our oil cooler grille make everything look homogeneous, creating a unique effect with the cylinder block and the bevel gear.

Kinderis plans to run Josh Waters alongside Allerton in ASBK

SMSP Night Series saw Waters debut with BMW

If Shane Kinderis gets his way the BMW presence in Australian Superbike might be the strongest ever come 2022 as he works to secure enough funding to run Josh Waters alongside Glenn Allerton next season.

Maxima Oils S1K Racing BMW M 1000 RR – Shane Kinderis and Josh Waters – Image HalfLight

While half of the NextGen BMW squad recently went their separate ways after long-term team backers Wayne Hepburn and Nathan Webb formed a new BMW Alliance Racing squad, the main man behind the spanners and electronics throughout recent history on the BMW Superbikes in ASBK, Shane Kinderis, chose to continue on without his previous partners and race under the Maxima Racing Oils BMW and his S1K Racing banners with Glenn Allerton.

That paid dividends as the pair wrapped up second outright in the Australian Superbike Championship after carding two second place finishes behind Wayne Maxwell at the ASBK finale staged at The Bend.

We covered the separation in some detail while it was still quite raw here, but chose to run a conciliatory line rather than amplified clickbait headlines as the dust settled and the respective teams set about finalising their plans with BMW Motorrad HQ, and their respective sponsors. Do no harm and all that… But there certainly does seem to be some animosity going on behind the scenes between the new BMW Alliance squad and the Kinderis managed outfit.

In that piece on the split we mentioned that Kinderis would love to run another rider alongside Glenn Allerton in 2022, if enough finances could be raised to make that a viable possibility for the Maxima Oils backed squad.

After the BCperformance Kawasaki squad lost their backing from KMA in the lead up to the 2021 ASBK finale and Josh Waters was thus left without a ride, the three-time Aussie Superbike Champ, and Kinderis started talking about Waters testing the M 1000 RR.

Consequently Waters rode the BMW for the first time at Wakefield Park the Tuesday before the ASBK finale to help run in a new bike for the team and get a feel for the M 1000 RR. Josh loved the bike.

At the invitation of Kinderis he then had his competitive baptism of fire at Sydney Motorsport Park on the weekend when he contested the second round of the St. George Motorcycle Club Summer Night Series with the squad.

A third place in the opening bout behind Allerton and Halliday was followed up with a second place in the following race.

Unfortunately the team was not completely set-up for a two-rider effort as it was a bit of a last minute arrangement and with such a quick-fire race schedule they missed getting Josh out on the grid for the final race after having to change a wheel speed sensor due to a lack of spare rims, that meant Josh had to start the final bout from pit-lane. He still came through the field for seventh which was good enough to tally enough points to score fourth overall on the night.

Josh Waters

It was great to battle with the guys that got second (Allerton) and third (Halliday) in the Australian Superbike Championship after not running up front for a fair while, really enjoyed that part of it for sure.

“100 per cent I would love to race with Shane and Glenn in 2022 and a big thanks to Shane for putting me on the bike this weekend, it’s so great to be competitive again, I would love to be part of the journey with the team in 2022.”

Glenn Allerton set the fastest lap of the Friday night at 1m30.879 in the final race after switching to the harder W spec’ Pirelli, while Josh carded a best of 1m31.584 in race two. Racers remarked that the V8 Supercars have really knocked the track around of late and the surface now has more ripples than before and is not in the best of shape.

Glenn Allerton

I really enjoy the format of the night racing, the racing is short, fast and exciting under lights in front of a really great crowd. Even a lot of my mates come out after work on Friday with their kids and really enjoy it.

“I had a great weekend, pole position, and then the overall on the night, but I have found in the night racing it can be hard to lead from the front, as the guys have you as a target to follow.

“It was really good to have Josh there and get a different opinion on the bike, he picked up a couple of things in regards to the rear when trying to put that 200 horsepower down to the ground, and we made some good headway today on the back of his feedback. He will only make the team stronger and having another champion level rider in the team will only make ours and BMW’s presence in ASBK the strongest it has ever been.

“In the racing it was really close but to come out on top was really great, with the races only being five laps, it comes down to who can hold it on the longest and brake the deepest, to see who can come out on top.

Maxima Oils S1K Racing BMW M 1000 RR – Josh Waters and Glenn Allerton – Image RbMotoLens

There was a ride day at SMSP on Saturday where the team stayed on for three sessions in 40-degree heat and made some big chassis changes to the motorcycle which Allerton and Waters could both evaluate by swapping between motorcycles. The pair providing plenty of testing data for Kinderis to process when back at his SKR workshop and Alpine Performance Centre at Whorouly in Northern Victoria.

Shane Kinderis

I have to try and find some serious sponsorship to make it happen, but my intention is to have Josh on my bikes with Glenn in 2022 and I will move heaven and earth to try and make that happen.

Josh Waters is expected to join the team again when they contest the next round of the St. George Motorcycle Club Summer Night Series on January 8th, again under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Guarnoni has first hit-out with BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team

BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team test in Spain

The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team has been back on track with new team-mate Jéremy Guarnoni at Almeria in Spain, preparing for season 2022.

Jeremy Guarnoni joins the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team

2021 was a successful season, including victory in Most (CZE) and second place overall in the FIM Endurance World Championship (FIM EWC), with the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team now concentrating fully on preparations for 2022.

Team manager Werner Daemen has taken the team to Almeria in Spain for the first three-day winter testing session. A new face is in action on the #37 BMW M 1000 RR alongside Markus Reiterberger (GER), Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR) and Kenny Foray (FRA): Jéremy Guarnoni (FRA).

Jeremy Guarnoni – BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team

The 28-year-old Frenchman Guarnoni is a familiar face in the Endurance World Championship. He appeared in his first FIM EWC race at the age of 18, competing in the 2012 Bol d’Or in Magny-Cours (FRA). He has been a fixture in the FIM EWC since 2018 and became world champion in the 2018/19 season.

He was also the 2010 Superstock 600 European champion before competing for many years in the FIM Superstock 1000 Championship, where he claimed third place in the championship on two occasions and also got to know his new team-mates Reiterberger and Mikhalchik. Guarnoni spent a season racing in the FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) in 2014.

Jéremy Guarnoni

“I have a very good impression of the bike. The performance is really unbelievable, and I immediately felt good on it. I am also very happy with the team, which is very professional. I have a really good feeling about the mechanics, the crew chief and my team-mates. I already knew Ilya, Markus and Kenny as opponents, and now they are my team-mates. That is really cool. I am sure we can achieve great things next season, and I am looking forward to it.”

Jéremy Guarnoni

The BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team is using the test in Almeria to continue work on optimising the #37 BMW M 1000 RR. New components and set-up solutions are being evaluated. Together with tyre partner Dunlop, the team is testing a range of tyre options. Guarnoni also has the option of using the testing to familiarise himself with the motorbike and the team.

Werner Daemen – Team Manager BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team

“It has been a fantastic year for us, our first full year in FIM EWC. I am very proud of the whole team and everyone at BMW, as we finished second in the championship together. I think we really deserved that, especially the victory in the final race. We are now here testing for 2022 already. We have a lot to do over the next few days, but I am very happy with the set-up we have now. Markus, Ilya and Kenny are excellent guys and top riders. Jéremy Guarnoni is new to the team. I have been a fan of his since day one. He is a real endurance rider and a very good addition to the group. We have already had a lot of fun, which I feel is very important.”

Three race dates have already been confirmed for the 2022 season in the FIM EWC. The season starts on 16th/17th April with the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA), the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps will take place on 4th/5th June and the 8 Hours of Suzuka (JPN) will return to the FIM EWC calendar on 7th August. Further race dates are yet to be confirmed.

Markus Reiterberger

“Firstly, after a good season in 2021, we know exactly what we need to work on. I am very pleased that we still have a test this year. That is very important for us, as it allows us to lay important foundations for the coming year. I am pleased to be able to welcome Jéremy – another strong rider and a former world champion – to the team. The first day of testing was really tiring for everyone, as it was very cold and there was a lot to test. We got through most of the programme, but there are still a few important things to do. The initial impressions are definitely promising. With the improvements we can still make, I believe we will be able to make up that one position we missed out on this season. I am very confident and pleased to be part of the team.”

BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team

Ilya Mikhalchik

“It feels really good to be able to start preparations for 2022 this year. Firstly, I would like to welcome our new team member, Jéremy. I hope we can achieve some good results together. He is a very experienced endurance rider and I think we will learn a lot from each other. I am very happy to be riding with him in the team and on this bike. We have made a few improvements. I think we have a good overall package, with which we can win. We showed that in the last race. We are now testing a few things, to give ourselves an even better chance. I believe we have the potential to challenge at the top next year.”

Kenny Foray

“Our winter test is very early, but that is very good for us. The new bike is even better than the old one. It is really enjoyable to ride. I am hoping for a really good year for the whole team. If I am able to contribute to us improving, then I am definitely ready.”

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle offers all-in-one mobile solution

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

For riders who don’t want to invest in a full independent navigation system, with all the ensuing costs, BMW have released the ConnectedRide Cradle, designed to mount a variety of smartphones and offering a host of extra features.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

The ConnectedRide Cradle serves not only as a simple cradle but also offers a navigation map and vehicle data such as lean angle, acceleration, deceleration and much more can be displayed via the BMW Motorrad Connected App using the Multi-Controller.

Thanks to individually adjustable side clamps, the ConnectedRide Cradle is suitable for many different smartphone sizes and charges the smartphone inductively according to the Qi standard with a maximum of 7.5W or wired via a USB-C connection with a maximum of 7.5W (1.5A at 5V). An LED charging indicator (can be switched off) provides information about the phone’s charging status.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

For security, the ConnectedRide Cradle can be locked to the motorcycle’s holder, if the holder supports this.

The ConnectedRide Cradle can also be used on older BMW Motorrad models (e.g. BMW R 1200 GS K50) and fits all BMW Motorrad models equipped with the optional equipment “Preparation for navigation system (option 272)” – as well as models equipped with Multi-Controller and the option of retrofitting the navigation preparation via the BMW Motorrad workshop system (except R 1200 RT, R 1250 RT, K 1600 models).

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

On older motorcycles without a TFT instrument cluster, operation is possible via the control element of the “Preparation for navigation unit SA 272”. The prerequisite for displaying vehicle data is “On-board computer Pro (option 221)”. The ConnectedRide Cradle cannot be used with the Navigator 4-Button Mount Cradle.

In order to be able to fully use the functions described, the BMW Motorrad Connected App version 4.0 or higher must be used. BMW Motorrad recommends that you always install the latest updates to ensure proper functioning.

A Bluetooth connection is required to enable the app to be controlled via the motorcycle’s navigation preparation control element. The smartphone must be equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy version 4.2 at least in order to comply with the security requirements (LE Secure Connections) for the connection. Smartphones with older Bluetooth versions are therefore not supported.

BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

Bluetooth pairing takes place within the BMW Motorrad Connected App and is only required once during initial setup.

The following smartphones fit in the ConnectedRide Cradle:

  • All mobile phones with the following dimensions:
    • Minimum 130,1×65, 5×6.9mm; maximum 162.5×78,1×8.8mm.

Custom ‘The Wal’ BMW R 18 by Shinya Kimura

‘The Wal’ Custom BMW R 18 by Shinya Kimura

Following on from the unveiling of the Roland Sands and Dirk Oehlerking custom R 18 creations, Japanese customiser Shinya Kimura has now introduced ‘The Wal’ which was transformed for the SoulFuel series, as BMW Motorrad and select customisers collaborate.

Until recently, Shinya Kimura worked mainly on older motorcycles, but the Japanese customiser is increasingly also devoting himself to projects involving modern bikes. The Wal is one of them.

Shinya Kimura

“The basis is the R 18, powered by the latest and greatest engine I have ever worked on. It all started with a visit to the BMW Motorrad R 18 development team in Germany. I got to know the unbounded passion and innovative power that prevails at BMW Motorrad.

“Finally, in February 2021 in California, I rode the standard R 18 for a few hundred kilometres to get to know the character of the bike. Following a whole series of conversations, this eventually led to my personal interpretation of the R 18, in which I applied the entire range of my activities as a customizer.”

Kimura then began work in mid-February and The Wal was already built up by the end of June. Shinya Kimura’s craftsmanship can be aptly described by the term “hands-on”, as there are no sketches, drawings, blueprints or mock-ups during the building process. But there is a precise idea of what the customer, or in this case the customiser, wants.

Shinya Kimura

“I built the R 18 entirely for myself. When I rode the production R 18, I thought it might suit my build and riding preferences better if I designed it to be a little more front-facing with a fairing. I decided to adopt the frame, wheels and tyres as well as suspension elements and brakes because I didn’t feel the need to change them after I had ridden the bike. I also wanted to be able to ride for long distances with my R 18 while feeling and enjoying the legendary boxer engine.

‘The Wal’ Custom BMW R 18 by Shinya Kimura

“It was very important to me to preserve the two characters of the R 18 as I experienced them when riding. Thanks to its mighty engine, the bike is wild and has almost inexhaustible power on the one hand, yet it is completely good-natured on the other. Just like a whale, hence the German animal name for this R 18, which for me is something like a “Sports Endurancer”.”

‘The Wal’ Custom BMW R 18 by Shinya Kimura

The “Sports Endurancer” is unmistakably evident in Kimura’s R 18 The Wal. This is ensured by a larger and, completely differently designed fuel tank compared to the original, an elongated, harmoniously rounded seat hump and a half-shell fairing.

“I also moved the foot rests back about two inches to have more flexibility for positioning the legs. At the same time, I lowered the handlebars and changed the seat to my liking. The seat cushion was also designed by me and then handmade by BACKDROP Leathers in Japan. It all added up to the very natural posture that I like.”

The semi-shell fairing houses two asymmetrically arranged headlights that almost look like eyes and, with a little imagination, actually give Kimura’s R 18 the appearance of a whale together with a “set of teeth” incorporated underneath. The colour scheme and the coarsely textured paintwork also match the theme of The Wal.

“What I like best about my version of the R 18 is that I was able to change the style and seating position to my liking without destroying the excellent original functionality of the R 18. But drastically changing the seating position and adding my own style and taste was a big challenge in my interpretation of the BMW Heritage. Besides, all these computerised systems and wiring were quite new to me and I learned a lot.”

‘The Wal’ Custom BMW R 18 by Shinya Kimura

R 18 Custom ‘The Wal’ features:

  • Handlebars – eight inches narrower, six inches lower.
  • Fuel tank – Made longer to move the seating position rearward and gain additional fuel capacity of about one gallon for longer trips.
  • Seat pad designed by Kimura himself, handmade by BACKDROP Leathers in Japan in bucket style for more bottom support.
  • Seat designed so that it creates a natural flow from the seat cushion and leads to the round rear light.
  • Semi-shell fairing for comfortable handling at high speed.
  • The side covers have been designed in such a way that they do not destroy the look of the original frame.
  • Special paint finish in the form of a bronze powder coating, after the components have previously been hammered to give the surface texture.
  • After Kimura had completed all the bodywork, he decided to keep the classic symbolic shape of the standard exhaust system, but paint it black.

About Shinya Kimura

Born and raised in a family that ran a small rivet factory in downtown Tokyo, Shinya Kimura was always surrounded by the smell of steel and oil and the sound of machinery and metals.

Perhaps that’s why, after studying entomology, Kimura decided to return to what felt most natural to him – tinkering in his workshop and building things from different metals.

Kimura, the father of the so-called “Zero Style” motorbike, began his career as a customiser in Japan at Zero Engineering, a company he founded in 1992.

He rose to international fame as early as the 1990s, when his custom Harley-Davidson “Samurai Chopper” was created. It followed his characteristic wabi-sabi influenced style.

In search of new inspiration, Kimura later moved to Azusa, California, where he founded his own independent company, Chabott Engineering, in 2006. Today, the sought-after customiser only makes a handful of motorcycles a year – exclusively for customers with whom he feels a mutual understanding and no time pressure.

The great passion that drives him? “Passion for all the motorbikes that were born into this world”, as he says himself. While working on “The Wal” project, he discovered new things every day that stimulated and motivated him. Looking back, he added, “I greatly appreciate BMW Motorrad and all the people who supported me in this project. It was such a valuable and impactful experience for me.”

New BMW Superbike Team to debut at The Bend

More M 1000 RR BMW Superbikes on the ASBK grid

In recent years BMW has been ably represented in the ranks of the Australian Superbike Championship primarily through Next Generation (NextGen) Motorsports. A tie up between Shane Kinderis and his SKR workshop and Alpine Performance Centre at Whorouly in northeast Victoria. Wayne Hepburn’s Hepburn Concrete Services, Nathan Webb’s Zoom Recruitment and Greg Stevens’ Signpro.

Maxima Racing Oils have also backed their efforts which in recent years have primarily been concentrated on helping Glenn Allerton compete at a high level in ASBK.  Since the formation of the team highlights have included two Australian Superbike Championship Titles, in 2011 and 2014, both titles coming with Glenn Allerton at the controls.

Shane Kinderis has been responsible for building the motorcycles, tuning them and setting up the motorcycles at the circuit, along with technician Brad Lewis and other hands on help from the likes of Glenn’s dad George and some other keen supporters.

Kinderis will run Glenn Allerton himself next year and at this stage could run under the existing NextGen Motorsports or S1K Racing banners as they shoot for Glenn’s fourth Australian Superbike Championship crown, and their third together as a team.

Glenn Allerton tested at Winton last week and has been testing at Phillip Island this week. On Tuesday Glenn circulated the 4.445 kilometre circuit quicker than they have ever been before, Breaking the 300 km/h barrier consistently every lap and revelling in the performance of the new M 1000 RR.

Allerton and Kinderis have also not given up hope of wrestling the 2021 Australian Superbike Championship crown this year from the hands of Wayne Maxwell. Allerton will arrive at The Bend 32-points behind series leader Wayne Maxwell, but with 51-points up for grabs in South Australia, it’s not over yet…

As it stands at the moment the Kinderis family will only run Allerton in 2022, but if finances allow could expand to a two-rider outfit.

The remaining personnel from the original NextGen squad will go their own way and form a new team called BMW Alliance Racing. That means Wayne Hepburn, Nathan Webb, Brad Lewis and Greg Stevens will all back and be integral parts of the new team.

Nathan Spiteri and his Livson Construction business will be a part of the new BMW Alliance Racing outfit and Nathan will also race an M 1000 RR for the new team. Spiteri envisages his role will eventually evolve to be more as part of the team organisation when he eventually decides to no longer compete.

Spiteri’s team-mate at BMW Alliance Racing will be 21-year-old Lachlan Epis. Lachlan has displayed improving speed this season and his current intention will be to race two more seasons in Australia before pursuing a dream to race in Europe, something he has done quite a bit of already with starts in European Superstock, World Supersport and most recently a couple of World Superbike rounds on a TPR OutDo Pedercini ZX-10RR.

While Kinderis has built the current M 1000 RR BMW motorcycles that Alliance BMW Racing will field, the next builds and ongoing technical work for the new team will move to their premises in Melbourne’s western suburbs under the stewardship of Jake Skate.

The new look team will hit the track for the first time at a Phillip Island two-day test later this month before heading to The Bend to contest the final round of the Australian Superbike Championship on the first weekend in December.

Wayne Hepburn told MCNews.com.au that the new team came together almost by accident and at this stage is a work in progress.  However, they are determined to become a force in ASBK and help Lachlan build some consistency towards top five results. The eventual plan for the future is to then bring young new riders through into the category with the backing of the people behind the team.

BMW K 1600 model line-up scores great new TFT display and bit more poke

2022 BMW K1600 range

2022 BMW K1600 range

Many had feared that Euro5 emissions and noise legislation might sound the death nell of BMW’s awesome K series six-cylinder platform but BMW confirmed today that they have made the necessary changes in order to achieve the certification that guarantees the dynasty will continue.

Euro5 and a little more poke…

Not only is the engine now burning cleaner than ever but it has actually scored a performance boost along the way. An extra 5 Nm of torque is certainly better than going backwards and while peak power remains the same at 160 horsepower, it is reached 1000 rpm sooner than before.  180 Nm at 5250 rpm and 160 hp at 6750 rpm are the quoted figures.

2022 BMW K 1600 B

An updated ECU, two knock sensors and an extra two broadband lambda probes helped get the 1649 cc straight six over the EU-5 line. Engine drag torque control (MSR) is now across the line-up for 2022 and the engine can now better cope with lower octane fuels when required.

BMW K 1600 GTL

The K bike line-up includes the surprisingly agile K 1600 GT, the K 1600 GTL full dress tourer, the K 1600 B is the bagger of the brood while the K 1600 Grand America is big daddy. The most affordable model in the range is also our pick of the litter, the K 1600 GT is priced from $41,120 +ORC.

2022 BMW K 1600 GT

The ‘Next Generation’ Dynamic ESA electronic suspension has been updated and takes its cues from a new six-axis sensor along with two displacement sensors at the front and rear of the motorcycle.

New screen across the range

The headlight is now all LED but the big news on the specification front for me is the new 10.25-inch TFT colour display with integrated map navigation and connectivity as standard across the four model K 1600 range. It is a high-definition 1920 x 720 pixel screen covered by hardened glass.

2022 BMW K 1600 Grand America

An upgraded audio system becomes available on the GTL and Grand America but we are unsure as yet if this new Audio System 2.0 will be standard or optional in the Australian market.

2022 BMW K 1600 B

A smartphone can be safely accommodated in a splash-proof and  electrically ventilated storage compartment above the TFT display, and its battery can be kept topped up via a USB-C connection.

2022 BMW K 1600 B and Grand America

New Option 719 variants are added to the range with a ‘Midnight’ option on the K 1600 B and Grand America models in which a Meteoric Dust II metallic with the “Galaxy” theme is depicted using a water transfer printing method.

The new K 1600 range is scheduled to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2022.
