Jeffrey Herlings Wins 2021 MXGP World Title

The 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship came down to the final round and saw Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings clinch the MXGP World Title to become a five-time FIM Motocross World Champion. The win also marks KTMs eighth title in the MXGP.

This season of racing was filled with nail-biting races and multiple title contenders. MXGP reports that the top riders were Herlings, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser. The championship went down to the very final race, and Herlings crossed the line in first place, clinching the title just 5 points ahead of Febvre, who crossed the line second.

Herlings has been a KTM racer since he started his career in 2010 as a 15-year-old. Entering the final two rounds at Mantova, Herlings, Febvre, and Gasjer were separated by just 3 points. Aboard his KTM 450 SX-F, he fended off pressure from the competition and claimed his fifth Motocross World Championship title and second in the MXGP division.

In 2021, he also put together 14 podiums, 9 wins, and 13 pole positions from 17 rounds. That puts him just two victories away from the all-time record of 101. With another two years left on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing contract, it looks like there’s going to be no stopping him from breaking this record.

Strong finishes from the other KTM riders — Tony Cairoli and Jorge Prado — also meant KTM took home the 2021 Manufacturers’ Championship.

Jeffrey Herlings was a true champ following his victory and said, “I’m super happy, but at the same time, I feel bad for the other two guys. I want to thank both of them for a great championship. The bad thing about our sport is that only one can win, but they have been great, and I have such respect for both of them. To go 1-1 today was special. I haven’t slept for a week thinking about what could happen, what might happen, and this-and-that. This wasn’t an easy championship. All three of us kept charging until the last moto, especially me and Romain in these last two races, and the pressure was on. I didn’t break, and I made the championship happen. It was the most difficult one ever, so many ups-and-downs, and I’ve needed nerves of steel these last weeks, but we made it.”

Herlings and his team celebrating their championship win

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director, also commented on the victory: “This was not a normal season. It was a difficult and special title to win. The competition was incredible so big compliments to them: Tim and Romain produced an incredible year, and any one of the guys would have deserved a title, but we also worked really hard for this. Jeffrey was amazing. He had ups-and-downs but was always fighting and coming back for more. It is always an emotional ride with him but, in the end, I feel that he deserved this title the most.“

“I have to thank the whole team because they have made so much effort, but in our motocross ‘world’ the rider is the superstar, and we have great ones in our team. Tony, Jorge, Mattia, Rene, and Tom: the relationship we have is also amazing and makes our work so much fun. We will go home tomorrow to work hard and continue to be strong next year.”

KTM Super Duke R EVO unveiled

KTM has added a limited-edition EVO model to its 1290 Super Duke R range with a host of new electronics.

The wild naked R and EVO bikes arrive in Australia and New Zealand in February 2022 in the familiar blue and orange livery plus a new silver and orange.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but expect an increase for the updated electronics on the EVO. Currently the R costs $28,395.

In 2020, the Super Duke R was trimmed down.

Now the EVO arrives with second-generation WP APEX semi-active suspension with three damping modes – Comfort, Street and Sport.

The spring preload of the rear suspension can be set via the TFT display to up to 20mm in 10 steps to allow for rider, pillion and luggage weight.

An optional Suspension Pro package offers three more damping modes: a stiff Track mode, Advanced which allows the rider to select damping in eight levels and Auto which automatically adjusts for rider behaviour.

Suspension Pro also offers three automatic preload auto-levelling settings to adjust the preload automatically to the weight of the rider, pillion and luggage.

In Low mode, it provides a “relaxed, less aggressive, more comfortable geometry, with a lower seat height. Standard mode is a “neutral and balanced geometry” while High is an “aggressive, agile track attack geometry, with a more loaded front end”.

Another optional and switchable feature on Suspension Pro is an anti-diving setting that keeps the front-end high under hard braking.

The 2022 1290 Super Duke R and EVO models retain the Rain, Street and Sports modes with optional Track and Performance settings which provide feedback about what the engine is doing, with less intrusive traction control and anti-wheelie mitigation.

All can be selected without having to stop.

Throttle response has been boosted with the addition of a new quick-turn throttle twist grip, reduced by 7 degrees to 65 degrees.

KTM says this not only offers a faster and more responsive throttle, but also reduces the rider wrist angle as well as the elbow drop at full throttle.

2022 KTM 1290 Super Duke R Evo Incoming

It seems KTM has yet another update in store for its flagship super-naked. Asphalt and Rubber report the arrival of a KTM 1290 Super Duke R EVO, and it’s set to replace the 1290 Super Duke RR, which debuted just last year as a replacement to the already mental 2019 KTM 1290 Super Duke R.

This time around, the number of changes the 2022 update brings is minimal, but the role they’ll play is quite significant. A&R reports that “The Beast” will include a new quick-turn throttle (65° of twist), higher spec active suspension sourced from WP, and bold new color schemes.

The semi-active suspension is the most notable change and is a welcome move away from the manually adjustable units on the previous iteration of the Super Duke. The update will also allow the bike to be better poised to take on the competition in the segment, like the Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory (which received Öhlins semi-active suspension for 2021) and the Ducati Streetfighter V4.

KTM has mentioned that the new suspension kit is more reactive and precise in its adjustments. KTM will also offer an optional “Suspension Pro” package, bringing individually adjustable front and rear damping and an anti-dive feature.

The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Duke R Evo has been priced at $19,599, a $900 hike over the KTM 1290 Super Duke R that currently retails in the U.S market (the Super Duke RR was not sold there.) Despite the considerable hike in price, the new Super Duke is still a superbly impressive bike that sits in one of the hottest segments right now.

KTM recalls all LC4 models

KTM Australia has recalled all LC4-powered 690 models from 2018 to 2020 over a clutch issue.

Owners have been asked to book their bikes into the workshops of authorised KTM dealers for an inspection and possible free replacement of the clutch slave cylinder.

“Damage to the seal caused by deviations in assembly may impair the function of the clutch slave cylinder,” the official notice issued through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and says.

“All components of the version with a bellow gasket must therefore be replaced with the  new version without a bellow gasket.

“If the clutch fails to disengage it could result in a loss of motorcycle control increasing the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to the rider and/or passenger or bystanders.”

Customers with affected motorcycles have been advised by letter, but those who have bought the bikes second-hand in a private sale may not yet be aware.

The recall affects 576 motorcycles including the 690 Enduro R and 690 SMC R.

It follows a July recall of KTM motorcycles over an issue with the engine locking.

It’s not been a good year for KTM with four other recalls so far which is more than any other manufacturer.

VINs of affected bikes are:

‘Why We Ride’ with Trail Bound Moto & Jeff Leisk

Trail Bound Moto – ‘Why We Ride’

Looking for some trail inspiration? Check out the Why We Ride video by Trail Bound Moto on two wheels aboard the latest KTM EXC machinery in the company – and under the guidance – of moto legend Jeff Leisk.

KTM Why We Ride
KTM Why We Ride

Complete with tree-lined single-trail, technical creek crossings, a share of hillclimbs including the ever-challenging Diggers Hill and a mixture of scenic sections with views to remember throughout the 32-acre property, the day wound up by fireside with a well-earned barbecue and story-telling to recap the action.

A BBQ To Remember is Swiss 8’s annual mental health connection campaign, currently taking place between 11 October-11 November 2021. You can support the cause by entering the raffle at bbqtoremember.com/raffle for your chance to win a remarkable prize at the value of $180,000, inclusive of a KTM 350 EXC-F!

KTM Why We Ride
KTM Why We Ride

Swiss 8 is a proactive mental health charity, founded by Australian combat Veterans, and A BBQ To Remember connects millions of Australians in the aim to reduce anxiety, depression and suicide. Ignite change – stand alongside our Veterans and sporting legends Wendell Sailor, Drew Mitchell, Isaac Heeney and Harries Carroll by registering to host A BBQ To Remember.

Adrian Sutter – Swiss 8 Founder & CEO

“With the country just coming out of lockdown, we wanted to offer the ultimate adventure prize that would inspire Aussies to get out and explore this amazing country. And, of course, every good adventure ends with mates telling stories around a barbie. My main objective with this campaign is to connect Australians – isolation and social disconnection is the leading cause of anxiety and depression. Covid has forced this on all of us. It’s times like this we need to look to our defence and Veteran community who have lived through this before and learned valuable lessons. We want to share these lessons with all Aussies and the biggest lesson here is the need to stay connected to our people in order to maintain positive mental health. If we can motivate Australians to connect in a way that is iconic to Australian culture, while finding a strong sense of purpose through helping our Veterans drive this grassroots mental health movement, we are all winning.

2022 KTM Why We Ride
2022 KTM Why We Ride

“When I returned from Afghanistan then left the military, I had my own mental health rollercoaster ride. I had no education or information on what I was experiencing or how to deal with it. Learning these lessons the hard way, I wanted to make sure future generations had all the resources they needed to maintain a positive headspace and overcome anxiety and depression. This started as a hobby. The catalyst to create a charity and make this my full time purpose in life came when I lost one of my best mates to suicide, Afghan Veteran Jesse Bird. In the two years following Jesse’s death, I lost another three mates to suicide. While the world wanted to focus on PTSD and a reactive approach to solving the suicide problem, it was my belief that we had to take a proactive approach. Mental ill-health is a human problem, not a Veteran problem. Finding purpose in life, having a healthy routine, and of course staying connected to our tribe is the best way to proactively improve our mental health. This is what Swiss 8 is all about.”

KTM and Swiss 8 first came together at this year’s Finke Desert Race, in which Swiss 8 founder and CEO Adrian Sutter and his crew were on location for the high-profile event and met the KTM Racing Team in Alice Springs. From there, the 2022 KTM Enduro Why We Ride project was born.

KTM Why We Ride
KTM Why We Ride

Rosie Lalonde – KTM Group Marketing Manager

“Mental health is a topic that is just not discussed enough, especially with the challenges we have all faced in the past few years. So when the opportunity came up to support Swiss 8, we jumped at the chance to take action and help spread awareness for their hard work and positive mental health messages. And how best to help them by doing what we do at KTM – getting a group of riders out to experience why we ride, as motorcycling is not only good for the body and the soul, but also a great way to reconnect with your mates. It truly creates a vibe that needs to be felt to be understood and can help combat the stresses of life and the mental health issues that are so hard to discuss. We hope the Why We Ride project inspires others to reach out and reconnect with friends, and support positive mental health activities, like Swiss 8 with their BBQ To Remember.”

The championship-winning engine from KTM’s motocross and supercross machines has been adjusted and modified for optimum Supermoto use. The motor weighs just 27 kg but growls with torque and bites hard with 63 hp.

The power curve is both explored and exploited by the Pankl Racing Systems five-speed gearbox that benefits from a sensor which permits specific engine maps for each gear. A 44 mm Keihin throttle is key to the sensitive and confidence-inspiring way to summon the most of the KTM 450 SMR powerplant.

Handling comes through a special chromium molybdenum steel frame, fabricated by robotic laser-wielding for utmost precision and quality and the meld of perfect torsion and flex characteristics. The 16 mm offset geometry brings a natural and attackable sensation through the CNC-machined triple clamps with three-way amendable handlebar.

The KTM is equipped with a long list of premium quality parts, that includes WP Suspension XACT technology helps the 2022 KTM 450 SMR both stick and slide as the forces of physics drive through the Supermoto 16.5″/17″ ALPINA spoked tubeless wheels and Bridgestone slick tyres.

Ultimate braking performance is achieved with premium Brembo four-piston radial caliper and master cylinder set-up with 310 mm and 220 mm front and rear discs.

For 2022, the KTM 450 SMR introduces a frame finishing coated in racing orange to further reinforce the proximity to the race winning machines of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing stars.

A special model in the 2022 KTM EXC line-up, the new 2022 KTM 350 EXC-F Factory Edition features a long list of race-inspired parts combined with WP XACT air fork technology. The air fork introduces key weight savings together with quick and dependable adjustment possibilities thanks to the easy-to-access clickers and air pump. All in all, two key factors for the demanding and changing conditions found in Enduro competition.

2022 KTM 350 EXC-F Factory Edition

The combination of the compact state-of-the-art chromoly steel frame and the lively 28 kg 350cc fuel-injected DOHC engine bring the best compromise for a myriad of offroad conditions. From the slow, technical precision of wooded and rocky paths to miles of throttle-heavy trails, the 350 EXC-F Factory Edition is here to ace all challenges and challengers.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Josep Garcia on the 2022 KTM 350 EXC-F Factory Edition

Some of the hard hits of racing and riding can be deflected by the 350 EXC-F Factory Edition’s factory wheels and anodized hubs, the engine skid plate as well as the front brake disc guard. Other race-derived upgrades include the radiator fan and radiator protection, the map selector switch and the Supersprox Stealth rear sprocket, which all help enhance the premium experience of the 2022 KTM 350 EXC-F Factory Edition.

Lastly – for a bike that will keep riders noticeable in first place – is the aesthetic for 2022. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing graphics is the clearest and easiest sign that the 2022 KTM 350 EXC-F is firmly Factory Edition but there are other details too. Cast an eye over the factory blue seat, orange oil plug, CNC-machined orange triple clamps and, of course, that sumptuous orange frame.

New suspension, styling and tech upgrades for KTM RC390

2022 KTM RC390

Seven years ago this week I was sampling the first RC390 from KTM in Italy, and if not for the plague I would be Italy again sampling this major 2022 redesign of the RC390 platform in Italy.. Bugger.

2022 KTM RC390

The suspension has received significant upgrades with WP APEX inverted open-cartridge forks complete with 30-stage compression and rebound damping adustments.

2022 KTM RC390

At the rear a WP APEX shock offers pre-load adjustment and five clicks of rebound settings.

2022 KTM RC390

The KTM RC 390 is fitted with a WP APEX rear shock absorber which offers pre-load adjustment and 5 clicks rebound settings.

2022 KTM RC390

New rims have helped shave an impressive 3.4 kg unsprung weight off the RC390 and the upgraded ByBre braking system shave another kg  while the frame is now 1.5 kg lighter also.

EURO5 updates on the liquid-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke engine with twin overhead camshafts, four valves, and electronic fuel injection have helped boost torque with the aid of a new air-box design.

2022 KTM RC390

From an electronic standpoint, the new generation KTM RC 390 sets the benchmark for the small displacement Supersport segment, boasting a selection of rider aids usually only available on bigger motorcycles, namely Supermoto ABS, Lean angle sensitive Cornering ABS and Cornering MTC, along with the optional Quickshifter+.

2022 KTM RC390

KTM MY RIDE can now also be added, thanks to a new TFT color display, which allows riders to access important information at a glance, with the added flexibility of being able to tailor the display to show what they want to see. The display also automatically adapts its brightness to ambient light.

2022 KTM RC390

The most immediately obvious update across the board is the racy styling, which sees almost every panel being redesigned, boasting race-inspired lines and two new colorways which clearly define the sporty character of these motorcycles.

2022 KTM RC390

This redesign has also been purposely done to increase the overall size of the RC 390, not only to give it a striking visual presence but also to optimise aerodynamics due to higher top speeds, thanks in part to a computational fluid dynamics design process.

2022 KTM RC390

This new design has also optimised wind and weather protection, with KTM claiming enhanced heat management by using a combination of inner and outer body panels to direct airflow away from the rider.

2022 KTM RC390

The rear bodywork has been reduced as much as possible for a more aggressive profile, but also to show off as much of the redesigned steel trellis subframe as possible.

2022 KTM RC390

The knee area has been refined to allow for easier, more fluid rider movement, being as narrow as possible with the largest possible contact area.

2022 KTM RC390

An all-new two-part cockpit and windscreen holder makes use of a cast aluminum upper area and a lower composite part that secures the headlight, while a larger fuel tank has been added for improved day-to-day riding, comfort, and fuel range.

2022 KTM RC390

The new bodywork is easily removable, with a reduced number of screws being used as well as a redesigned mounting system. This makes swapping out the street-legal bodywork for race-ready panels more practical. However, the most notable updates to the KTM RC 390 can be found underneath the new bodywork.

2022 KTM RC390

The new RC390 is scheduled to debut in Australian and New Zealand from March, 2022.

KTM Group almost double their sales in first half of 2021

Record breaking first half of 2021 for Pierer Mobility

Pierer Mobility Group has announced record breaking gains in the first half of 2021, with group revenue breaking the €1.078 billion mark, in comparison to 600 million in 2020, representing an 80 per cent increase.

That also represents an operating result of €102.6 million, compared to just €1.7 million in 2020, with motorcycle sales increasing to a total of 176,045 from the KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and Bajaj brands, or almost double the same period in 2020.

The bicycle and e-bike divisions likewise saw strong growth, up 25 per cent, to 53,378 units sold, with the majority being e-bikes under the R Raymon, GasGas and Husqvarna brands.

That marks a total of 215,646 motorcycle and e-bikes, up 73 per cent compared to the previous year, despite the ongoing challenges of Covid, and it’s impact on production and distribution.

In Australia KTM recorded a 64.3 per cent improvement in road sales but dirtbike sales fell by 10.9 per cent ahead of the arrival of the 2022 models, which made the overall lift in sales only 7.1 per cent when both sectors were combined.

That trend was also reflected by Husqvarna with the sister brand increasing their road sales by 40.6 per cent, off what was an admittedly low base, while dirtbike sales dropped by 23.8 per cent.

Those figures were offset by 570 sales for GASGAS after the brand was reintroduced to Australia, which compares to 2974 off-road sales for KTM and 1163 off-road sales for Husqvarna.

If taking both off and on-road sales into account across the three brands just under 6800 sales were recorded over the first half of 2021 in Australia. This equates to around 4.2 per cent of the global motorcycle sales volume for the group.

The strongest improving markets have proven to be in Latin America, with a 62 per cent increase in Colombia, 43 per cent in Brazil and 31 per cent in Argentina, with growth of 25 per cent in Europe, on the back of strong demand for motorcycles.

2022 KTM 300 EXC TPI ErzbergRodeo

The strongest European nations were Italy, Spain and France, boasting 53, 41 and 28 per cent increases respectively, with market share in Europe reaching over 11 per cent. Market share in the US between the Pierer brands also now sits at 11.3 per cent, and reaches 18.9 per cent in the Oceania region.

In India Pierer saw an increase of 59 per cent in the S2 and S3 segment, with KTM and Husqvarna reaching a market share of 6.9 per cent

Employment figures were also strong, reaching 4,888, an increase of 559 from the first half of 2020, with 80 new apprentices beginning training this year, with 200 in total in training.

Pierer Mobility also entered into a joint venture with Maxcom, in e-bike manufacturing in Plovdiv in Bulgaria, investing €40 million, with a planned capacity of 350,000 units, with commissioning due to commend in the second half of 2023.

KTM 150 EXC

With strong growth continuing, Pierer has also revised their revenue for the 2021 fiscal year, raising the guidance to €1.9-2.0 billion, up €50 million on previous predictions.
