Intermot Motorcycle Show Returns Oct. 2022

Intermot
There’s always something to excite the crowd at Intermot.

It’s been a long wait since 2018, but Intermot is back for 2022. This massive 6-day European event will take place in Cologne, Germany, from Oct. 4-9 and feature 500 exhibiting companies and brands, new exhibitions and demonstrations, test tracks for attendees of all experience levels to test new bikes and scooters, stunt rides and competitions, and even a tattoo and barber shop.

We can’t wait to see what the biggest European companies in the industry have up their sleeves to unveil this year. Tickets and travel accommodations are still available on the Intermot website. For more information about Intermot 2022, see the press release below.

Intermot, the International Motorcycle, Scooter, and E-Bike Fair, is the first trade fair highlight of the year for motorcycle and scooter fans from Europe. This year, Intermot takes place from Oct. 4-9 in Cologne, Germany. Around 500 exhibiting companies and brands from around 29 countries, including many big names, will present their new and current models and product innovations to the international specialized trade and the biker community. In addition to motorcycles and scooters, Intermot also encompasses accessories, clothing, parts, heritage and customizing, and travel and workshop equipment.

Intermot is organized by Koelnmesse GmbH, and the conceptual sponsor of the event is the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM), based in Essen, Germany.

Many brands will be represented at Intermot, including Aprilia, Benelli, BMW Motorrad, Energica, Honda, Horex, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto Guzzi, MSA (Voge), Suzuki, Triumph, Vespa, and Zero. Intermot will take place at the Cologne fairgrounds in Halls 7, 8, and 9 and in the neighboring outdoor areas of the fairgrounds.

Demonstrations and Test Rides

As an event-oriented trade fair, Intermot 2022 will also offer its visitors special events on the topics of motorcycles and scooters in addition to exhibition presentations. Visitors will be able to try out the new models for themselves on the various test tracks in the directly neighboring outdoor areas. Whether novice or experienced motorcycle or scooter rider, there is a test track for everyone: rookies as young as 15 years old can make their first rounds on the 125cc test track, while experienced riders can test the new models on the big bike test track. On the e-test track, everything revolves around electromobility. Expert supervision and instruction will be present at all test tracks.

The best 40 stunt riders of Europe will compete at Intermot from Oct. 7-9 for the European Street Freestyle Championship. Organized by FIM Europe (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), the international umbrella organization for motorcycling, only absolute experts are at work here.

The Institute for Motorcycle Safety (ifz) dedicates itself to the theme of “safety” in breathtaking action shows. A mix of stunt, action, and riding demonstration takes place here four times a day. Important safety topics are thus presented in a uniquely entertaining and memorable way.

In the Halls

There are also exciting themes to be discovered in the halls. The major custom exhibition of Intermot will be presented in Hall 7, organized by Custombike magazine. This exhibition will cover a variety of categories, such as smaller two-wheelers (including small, kickstart, and standard mopeds, as well as light motorcycles), cafe racers, choppers, bobbers, cruisers, roadsters, dirtbikes, racebikes, factory customs, and radical bikes. In each themed area you’ll also receive expert advice from proven professionals. If you need a break from all the excitement, you can also sit back and talk shop with fellow enthusiasts in the Custom Lounge.

The special event “Wrap my ride” in Hall 7 informs on the professional wrapping of bikes, helmets, and panniers. Whether conspicuous design or protective foil against falling rocks, experts from the wrapping scene will demonstrate how you can apply your chosen design onto the surface correctly using self-adhesive foils and films.

And those who are looking for a new tattoo or want to shape their beard can take a short detour to the tattoo and barber shop of Intermot in Hall 7.

The Big Stage

Motorcycle fans can find the Intermot stage, the stage for the big appearance, in Hall 8. Here one can follow expert talks featuring the most interesting celebrities, influencers, and experts from the world of motorcycling. In addition, extraordinary motorcycles are presented and award ceremonies performed. The “Bike Woman of the Year” award, sponsored by the trade journal Bike und Business, will also be presented here on Oct. 5.

The 125 cc special show, presented by Motorrad magazine, encompasses the whole world of 125 cubic centimeter bikes. From petrol engines to electric drives. Whether cross/supermoto, street/naked, scooters, or specials, including cafe racers, flat-trackers, and choppers. You can also test-ride all the exhibited models on the 125 cc test track. And you don’t even need a license. Those 15 and over can participate when accompanied by an adult. Protective clothing will of course be provided on location.

World’s biggest bike show postponed

The world’s biggest motorbike show has been postponed from this November for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, switching new model launches to the virtual world.

The announcement that the EICMA show in Milan will be postponed a year follows the recent axing of the competing biennial Intermot in Cologne in October.

We wonder if this is the start of the end for motorcycle shows, anyway.

These shows have been the world’s biggest and most motorcycle companies have used them to launch new models, prototypes and concepts.

However, the strong competition for the limelight has forced many companies to conduct launch their new models on social media a few days before the shows open.

On Tuesday night, MV Agusta will hold a virtual media launch of its new Brutale 1000 RR.MV Agusta Brutale 1000 RR Blue & White M.L.

Other new model launches have also been conducted on social media, rather than flying moto journos around the world.

It’s cheaper and gets them just as much media exposure.

We expect this virtual launch program will accelerate in the wake of these motorcycle shows being postponed over the pandemic.

Shows and events postponed

Many other motorcycle shows and events have been cancelled or postponed, including the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride which this year goes virtual.

Yet the world’s biggest motorcycle event, the Sturgis Rally in South Dakota will go ahead.

It can attract up to a half a million riders and pillions. Perhaps not this year, though.

The 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 7-16 will not include the usual parade, opening ceremony and B-1 bomber flyover.

Vendors will be required to wear personal protective equipment.

Mass testing is being considered for the safety of residents, but has not been approved.

Each test could cost $75 to $150 per person.

Pandemic forces virtual DGR and INTERMOT

The pandemic has forced the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and INTERMOT motorcycle show to go virtual, while the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will go ahead.

DGR operations manager Ramsey Sayed says it will still go ahead on 27 September 2020 around the globe, but as a “ride solo, together” event.

Riders around the world will be encouraged to dapper up and either hop on their bikes if they’re able to, or snap a shot of them with their classic and vintage styled motorcycle and join us online,” he says.

In the absence of formally organised rides, participants are asked to register online, fundraise for Movember, dress-up, and ride as individuals and/or with a pillion.

While it could conceivably have gone ahead in some countries such as Australia, it would not be possible to conduct the event in the usual manner in many other countries as they still have stringent lockdowns in place.

“The focus for this year will be to connect riders from all around the world, despite their COVID-19 social distancing restrictions,” Ramsey says.

“We want riders to know that we may be socially distanced, but we can still be connected digitally. It definitely came at a difficult time.

“We not only need to take people’s local lockdown restrictions into consideration, but we also needed to consider how riders and hosts have been financially affected in losing jobs and security, and how this may have impacted their lives. It’s a three-degrees of separation thing, some hosts either had COVID-19, or knew someone who did, and even have family members who lost their lives because of it. We wanted to be sensitive to those who spend countless hours volunteering to run their ride, who may not be able to get involved.

“The main thing we’d want people to be aware of here is that we know that some areas of the world might be opened up by the time DGR hits in 2020, but DGR isn’t only a local event – it’s a global movement – and when we have so many folks who are integral in running their rides who have been heavily impacted by this, we need to look out for each other.”

Many DGR fans may not like the virtual DGR idea but it will be a real test of the commitment of participants and whether they are doing it for the benefit of others and in the spirit of the event, or just for pleasure.

Movember fundsDistinguished Gentleman’s Ride record year Brisbane

Meanwhile, Movember has released the $A1.15 million DGR-funded Social Connections Challenge to provide grants for new programs helping the mental and physical health of men in motorcycling.

Movember and DGR are looking for ideas that:

  • Cast a wider net to engage socially isolated men and strengthen social connections;
  • Leverage opportunities to engage hard-to-reach men;
  • Strengthen peer-to-peer support;
  • Improve knowledge about mental health and suicide prevention; and
  • Create opportunities for role modelling and mentorship.

If you are interested in submitting an idea, click here to learn more or email [email protected]. The closing date for submissions in all markets is 6 July 2020.

Meanwhile, the biennial Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne in October has been cancelled.

While the pandemic has forced events, races and shows to go virtual, the world’s biggest motorcycle rally will go ahead in real life.

The Sturgis City Council has voted to go ahead with the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 7-16.

The event may not draw the usual hundreds of thousands f spectators this year and it will not include the usual parade, opening ceremony and B-1 bomber flyover.

Coronavirus hits major motorcycle shows

The biennial Intermot and annual EICMA motorcycle shows in October and November appear to be in jeopardy with BMW Motorrad the first to declare they will not attend.

The shows in Cologne and Milan are the biggest in the world and are the showcase for manufacturers around the world to debut their new models.

Despite being more than seven months away, BMW Motorrad has issued a statement saying they won’t attend.

It follows their recent decision to halt manufacturing at its Spandau factory in Berlin and their G 310 production in India for two weeks. They are expected to return to production next week.

BMW’s decision not to attend the motorcycle shows several months from now is significant as BMW uses these major shows to launch all their next-year models.

Their withdrawal could be the first of many companies to do the same.

Here is the official statement:

Due to the hardly foreseeable development of the corona pandemic and its effects, BMW Motorrad will not be participating in the two leading motorcycle shows Intermot in Cologne in October and EICMA in Milan in November in 2020.

This decision was made in order to counteract current planning uncertainty at an early stage, also for all our partners involved in BMW Motorrad motorshow appearances, in the interests of the greatest possible security, predictability and transparency.

BMW Motorrad will present the world premieres and product highlights planned for these motorcycle shows on alternative platforms in autumn 2020. In doing so, the company will increasingly rely on its own formats and digital communication channels.

The move comes just a day before BMW Motorrad was expected to do a “virtual launch” for their much-vaunted R 18 cruiser and tourer tomorrow (3 April 2020).

However, they now tell us it has been postponed and to “stay tuned”.

We have published several photos of the various models configurations as shown below and will update you with the production model when it is released.

Virtual shows

It follows recent motorcycle show closures in Japan, forcing companies such as Suzuki and Honda to stage “virtual” exhibits and launches.

Yet, the organisers of the world’s biggest motorcycle rally in the world at Sturgis are still confident it will go ahead as planned in August.
