Finding form: Binder ends Friday as the man to beat

However, the session would end in flames for Marquez after the title contender went down at Turn 3, his bike caught fire but luckily it was extinguished fairly quickly. That was Marquez’ day over but it wasn’t day over for Binder, the South African shot to the top of the times with three minutes to go by over three tenths, setting the first and what proved to be the only 1:23 of FP2. As the chequered flag came out, the Assen second place finisher would remain comfortably clear of the rest after finishing P15 in FP1, with Lecuona getting on terms with Vierge late in the session – the latter keeps P2 after setting the 1:24.328 first and improves massively on his P18 in FP1, despite a crash at Turn 1 in the second Free Practice.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing has released a statement revealing it’s mutually agreed to part ways with triple Australian champion Dean Ferris midway through the 2019 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Ferris, who was drafted in as a replacement for injured team regular Aaron Plessinger, was understood to be signed for the entire 12-round champion despite the premier class rookie’s looming return, which was eventually made at Southwick.

The statement read that Ferris will return home to Australia, although the popular New South Welshman is yet to address his new-found situation.

“It was a pleasure to have Dean filling in for the opening rounds of the 2019 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship while Aaron was recovering from injury,” said team manager Jim Perry.

“Now that Aaron has returned to his #7 YZ450F, the Aussie national champ has decided to return home down under. The Monster Energy Factory Yamaha team appreciated his strong work ethic and commitment while in the states, we wish him all the best in the future.”

Ferris is currently ranked eighth in the championship standings, directly behind lead Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing rider Justin Barcia. The Australian scored numerous top finishes in the opening six rounds, with the seventh stop scheduled for this weekend at RedBud.

Quartararo frustrated as Marquez reigns over Rins on Day 1

Rins would keep his P2 to improve from his P4 in FP1, just the start the Spaniard would have been looking for after his Assen crash, with Quartararo settling for P3. Viñales ends Friday in P4, 0.488 back from Marquez, with Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completing the top five after going well on the soft rear tyre in FP2 – the Spaniard improving from a P11 in FP1. Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol), despite riding with a right knee and tibia injury, had a solid day at the office to finish sixth overall, a nice jump from P10 in the morning session. Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) was a late improver to finish seventh, the Australian staying put after finishing seventh in FP1 to lead the Desmosedici charge.
