Yamaha brings a second innovative electric bicycle to the US market in 2022 with the new Wabash RT, which shares many of the features found on the CrossCore RC but is designed for road riders who want the option to do a little adventuring off the beaten path. The Wabash will be available in a Blue Steel colorway this summer for $4,099.

As with the CrossCore, the Wabash RT has a newly designed hydroformed aluminum frame with a 500-watt battery integrated in the downtube. It will also feature the new (to the US) PWSeries ST drive unit providing four user-selectable ride modes plus an automatic mode. The Eco+, Eco, Standard, and High modes are informed by four different sensors monitoring torque, speed, crank rotation, and bike angle. This drive/battery combo results in a top speed of up to 28 mph.

“The Wabash RT is made for paved and unpaved exploration and adventure,” Yamaha’s Power Assist Bicycle Sales and Marketing Manager Drew Engelmann said in a press release.

To put its power to the ground, the Wabash comes on Maxxis Rambler tires to provide grip on and off road. The flared drop-bar handlebars are designed to improve stability and to accommodate handlebar packs; the back of the bike is also rack compatible. Shimano GRX RX400 hydraulic brakes offer reliable stopping power in a variety of terrain, while the Shimano GRX drivetrain is equipped with 11 speeds.

The Wabash RT will be available in small, medium, and large versions.

Suzuki fills out its 2022 lineup with existing models.

Begin Press Release:

Suzuki Launches Additional 2022 Models

Suzuki Adventure Touring, Off-Road, Cruiser and Street Models Round Out 2022 Models

Brea, CA (March 2, 2022) – Extending the momentum gained from exciting models like the all-new 2022 Hayabusa and GSX-S1000GT+, Suzuki Motor USA, LLC launches another wave of dynamic motorcycles to the lineup. This additional group of motorcycles brings together a collection of proven Suzuki products including highly capable adventure and off-road machines; wind in your face Boulevard cruisers and an exciting street bike that punches above its weight all while delivering great value.

Adventure Models:

Renowned for their reliability and value, Suzuki’s V-STROM models have attracted many riders who use their motorcycles for touring, commuting, and exploring new trails and roads with spirited performance. These are touchstone motorcycles balanced with a natural riding position, comfortable ergonomics, and a flexible engine character that produce riding excitement during daily commutes, cross-country trips, or a high-mile adventure.

V-STROM 1050XT and V-STROM 1050XT Adventure – The 2022 V-STROM 1050XT and the V-STROM 1050XT Adventure models return with the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.). These V-STROMs lead the Adventure category in technology as this advanced suite of features is interconnected to an ECM via a Controller Area Network (CAN) wire harness that quickly transmits information from a six-direction, three-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU). This IMU measures six directions of movement along three axes (as compared to the five directions measured on the previous generation). The IMU detects pitch, roll, and yaw movement based on the motorcycle’s position, movement, and acceleration. Other key technologies include:

  • Traction Control* with four sensitivity modes, Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS), and Cruise Control that effectively maintains road speed through the Ride-by-Wire electronic throttle bodies.
  • Adjustable Motion Track Antilock** & Combined Brake System includes a Hill Hold Control system to aid the rider when stopped on an incline.
  • Slope Dependent Control System helps manage braking force to avoid rear wheel lift when riding downhill.
  • Load Dependent Control System monitors and retains braking force information to optimize braking force when riding with a passenger or heavy cargo.
  • Each element of S.I.R.S. helps provide V-STROM 1050XT riders with stress-free use and convenience during long-distance adventures, commuting, or pleasure riding.

The V-STROM 1050XT and V-STROM 1050XT Adventure’s S.I.R.S. electronic suite with key features that makes Adventure touring enjoyable, such as:

The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) is a three-mode system that lets the rider select the engine’s power delivery characteristic to match riding ability and conditions. Working in concert with the Traction Control System*, S-DMS permits peak power in each mode while changing the nature of the power delivery.

  • A Mode – provides sharp throttle response.
  • B Mode – provides a moderate throttle response.
  • C Mode – provides the softest throttle response of the three modes.

The Cruise Control System maintains the selected road speed without the rider having to hold the throttle open. A button on the right handlebar control can be pressed to put cruise control into standby, and a rocker-style selector switch on the left handlebar control lets the rider adjust the speed up or down. Cruise control function icons and indicators are located on the instrument panel.

*The Traction Control System is not a substitute for the rider’s throttle control. It cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when the rider enters a turn and/or applies the brakes. Neither can it prevent the front wheel from losing grip.
**Depending on road surface conditions, such as wet, loose, or uneven roads, braking distance for an ABS-equipped vehicle may be longer than for a vehicle not equipped with ABS. ABS cannot prevent wheel skidding caused by braking while cornering. Please ride carefully and do not overly rely on ABS.

“It’s going to be an insane season”

All six manufacturers were represented in the Qatar GP Press Conference as we get set for 2022 revving into life

After months of waiting, we’re finally ready for the talking to be done on track. 2022 is almost in full flow and in the first Pre-Event Press Conference of the year, at the Grand Prix of Qatar, reigning World Champion Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) was joined by Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing).

Closer than ever

Many people are suggesting this could be the closest, hardest fought season ever in MotoGP™. By the sounds of it, the riders agree as we get set for six manufacturers and 24 immensely fast riders going head-to-head over 21 races. The riders themselves had their say on the season ahead.

Quartararo: “Well it will make life more difficult but for the show and everyone it will be nice to not have that big difference. I remember maybe 10 years ago we had a few riders and then the rest, but now basically everything is so tight and the level of riders is really high. Now I think it’s the closest ever and it will be fun.”

Bagnaia: “It’s something good for the show, but I think years ago, the way of working was different. Now you have to do the time attack. I was feeling years ago, I was doing the time attack my first year in MotoGP and with the lap time I did in 2020 I was fifth, and this year like 17th; a big difference. I think it’s the way to work in the test.”

Mir: “Yeah I think that for the show it will be really good. During the test on the last day it looked like qualifying, but it means that there’s a lot of competitiveness between the manufacturers and riders and everything, for the show it’s amazing. Like Fabio said it makes our lives a bit more difficult, but we are here for this. Better like this, we’ll enjoy more from inside and the people from outside, and yeah, we will enjoy.”

Marc Marquez: “Of course as you say in the test it was very close but it’s not the first year that in the test it was very close. Let’s see during the first four or five races we will understand who the top guys are. Anyway it will be interesting to have equal bikes, equal level between the riders and this makes everything more interesting.”

Brad Binder: “It’s going to be an insane year. Times are as close as ever and things are super competitive. I expect a little bit of Moto3 style racing on Sunday, it’s going to be super cool to watch so let’s see how it pans out.”

Viñales: “Honestly, it’s always nice. The competition is getting closer and closer. One second covers almost all the grid. This is fantastic, the bikes are more or less equal and the competition is real.”

How are the top two from 2021 feeling ahead of 2022?

2021 Champion Quartararo and runner-up Bagnaia come into the season as two of the early favourites. Yamaha didn’t find the top speed gains they were looking for as Ducati continue to look like they’ve got one of – if not the – strongest packages on the grid. So how are they feeling ahead of the opening round of the season in Qatar?

Quartararo: “To be honest it’s great to be back and when the season is over, the weeks are going quickly, but when you’re close to riding in Qatar, the last week was long and it’s great to be here. I think pre-season was good, we expected a bit more top speed. It is what it is, we need to give 100% in any case. I’m ready and looking forward to starting tomorrow.”

Bagnaia: “I think we worked well in the pre-season. It’s difficult to understand the level of bikes at these tests because anyone did what they want about how to work. I think the potential of our bike is high and we chose the best package during the tests. I’m quite confident like the end of the last season and I think we can start from there.”

Marc Marquez and Honda – where do they stack up?

It’s a question on everyone’s lips. How will Marc Marquez get on in Qatar, and just how good is Honda’s brand-new RC213V? The answer to both will come in a matter of days at the Lusail International Circuit.

Marc Marquez: “Yeah of course I’m happy to be here. It’s already better than last year and that’s important. After the winter it wasn’t clear but it was important to test in Malaysia and Mandalika, after Mandalika I felt a step with my physical condition and that’s important. Let’s see how to, the way to start the first race, for 2022 I want to fight all these guys for the title of course, maybe for the Qatar GP I’m not ready, during the weekend we will understand where we are.

“They did a big step on the bike. Honestly it feels like I changed the brand because it’s a completely different bike. Since I arrived in Honda there was always improvement but the character of the bike was always similar, but now it’s a big change. In Malaysia I struggled a bit but I feel the potential because in one lap the lap time was coming, but in Mandalika I was bringing the bike to my riding style already and I felt a step. During the first races we will find small things, but the base is nice, it’s good, and yeah let’s see in qualifying and race conditions where we are.”

The sound of Grand Prix motorcycles rumbling out of pitlane in Qatar is just around the corner. 2022 is here and what a season it’s shaping up to be. If last year’s races just a stone’s throw away from Doha are anything to go by, then this weekend will be absolutely sensational.

Yamaha’s already robust selection of electric bicycles gets a little more substantial with the introduction of the 2022 CrossCore RC. The new bike is aimed at commuters and fitness riders and brings some never-before-seen tech to the United States. It will be available this summer in Shiver White, Painted Desert, and Urban Sage colorways, starting at $3,099.

Yamaha has been in the electric bicycle game for a relatively long time, with its first prototype introduced in 1989 and its first power-assist bike coming to the Japanese market in 1993. It’s since built bikes in a number of categories. The CrossCore RC marks a step forward for the existing CrossCore urban platform.

Designers started with a whole new frame built to accommodate a new Yamaha PWSeries ST drive unit. This marks the first time riders stateside will see the PWSeries ST on a production bike. The drive features four ride assist modes (Eco+, Eco, Standard, and High) along with an automatic mode. These ride modes are fed data from a torque sensor, which calculates pedal power coming from the rider; a speed sensor; a crank sensor; and an angle sensor. Collectively these inputs create a drive unit Yamaha describes as “the most natural feeling power assist system on the market.”

The RC will be capable of reaching a 28-mph maximum speed, thanks to downtube-integrated 500-watt-hour lithium batteries.

As the CrossCore RC is a commuter-focused bike, ergonomics are upright and neutral. It features flat handlebars, optimized switch placement, an LED headlight, and a multifunction LCD display. A Shimano drivetrain provides nine speeds; hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping duties. The bike rolls on CST Brooklyn Pro tires which feature stiffened sidewalls and a puncture-resistant layering.

Small, medium, and large versions of the CrossCore RC will be available.
