JAKUB KORNFEIL – WithU Motorsport rider: “I have no words to describe what I feel at this moment. I want to thank the WithU Motorsport team for the opportunity they are giving me; to be honest I didn’t expect it at this moment in the year. I’m ready for this new challenge and I will give my all.

“My first contact with the MotoE bike will be at Jerez during the Spanish GP week, so I will have to adapt quickly to a completely new bike and competition. Official | Dovi undergoes succesful shoulder surgery

Dovi confident of being fit for Jerez season opener

Andrea Dovizioso underwent surgery at Policlinico di Modena yesterday evening after sustaining a left collarbone injury yesterday afternoon during a motocross race at Monte Coralli race track, in Faenza province.

The Ducati Team rider, following consultation with Professor Giuseppe Porcellini, decided to undergo immediate surgery to fix a plate on the injured collarbone to speed up his recuperation in time for the first 2020 MotoGP race in Jerez.

The operation took place yesterday evening with a positive outcome, and Dovizioso has been discharged this morning and will be able to start physiotherapy rehabilitation already this afternoon. The rider from Forlì will, therefore, participate in the next Spanish GP scheduled for the upcoming 19th July, and has declared to be confident to be able to arrive at the first meeting in Jerez in the best possible conditions.”

Andrea Dovizioso

The surgery went well, and I want to thank all the medical team that did the operation so quickly. I don’t feel much pain, and that makes me very optimistic. I came home this morning, and during the afternoon, I will plan my rehabilitation. I am confident that in these weeks I will be able to recover and that I will be in full shape in time for the first 2020 GP in Jerez.

Prof. Giuseppe Porcellini (Policlinico di Modena)

Andrea Dovizioso underwent surgery to correct a displaced fracture of the sternal margin of the clavicle. We proceeded with the internal fixation of a plate with six screws with anatomic reduction and, from a mechanical point of view, we are delighted with the outcome of the operation. Apart from me, the medical team was composed by Prof. Fabio Catani, who personally supervised the operation, Prof. Luigi Tarallo and Doctor Andrea Giorgini. I want to thank the Direction of the Policlinico di Modena that made the operating room available in three hours, and all the staff who made possible to perform the surgery quickly“.

Paolo Ciabatti (Ducati Corse Sports Director)

Although we know that motocross is an activity that presents several risks, we had still allowed Andrea to participate in this regional race, because he had explained to us that he needed to rediscover those stimuli and sensations that only a real competition can give. On the other hand, motocross is also the discipline with which many of the MotoGP riders train regularly. So, in the end, we must be relieved that the injury did not have serious consequences and that Andrea will be able to be regularly at the start of the 2020 championship in Jerez“.

Australian Supercross organisers pay tribute to WEM

Australian Supercross organisers pay tribute to WEM

Williams Event Management to retain SX motorsport management role.

Image: Foremost Media.

Australian Supercross Championship commercial rights-holder AUS SX Holdings has penned an open letter paying tribute to outgoing MX Nationals promoter Williams Event Management (WEM), which will almost certainly continue as motorsports manager in supercross.

WEM director Kevin Williams confirmed on Friday that WEM would be stepping down from its position operating the Australian Motocross Championship following over two decades leading the sport.

Williams has also been instrumental in assisting AUS SX Holdings in the operations of AUS Supercross, with WEM responsible for the race amanagement of the series in addition to the high-profile S-X Open International Supercross FIM Oceania Championship.

“On behalf of myself, Ryan [Sanderson] and the team at AME and AUS SX Holdings, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Kevin Williams and his family for their contribution to motorcycle racing in Australia for the past 20-plus years,” AME Management and AUS SX Holdings co-founder Adam Bailey stated.

“Like many, my first interactions with Kev, were as a racer competing in his events. Like many also I was guilty of being critical of ‘the promoter’ of any events I competed or was involved with. Not intentionally, but just out of innocent ignorance.

“Having graduated into being a promoter myself since 2015 alongside Sando and our team, of course now, I have the benefit of a completely different perspective. Promoting events is an incredibly taxing and sometimes thankless task. Those involved do it out of passion and love for the sport first with financial gain a far from guaranteed byproduct if everything falls into line for you, which sometimes they do not.

“In these situations the workload, stress and commitment does not decrease. The reality is, it is possible in events to work an entire year in planning, execution and operations, only to finish with further bills to pay rather than a chunk of cash in your pocket as per the outsiders’ perception.

“Anyone that has promoted events can vouch for this and have spoken about it openly including Phil Christensen, Mike Porra and Yarrive Konsky, to name a few that have invested huge amounts of time (and money) into Australian motocross/supercross events our of passion and will to see them succeed.

“With this in mind, I think it remiss of us not to appreciate and respect a person and family, who can survive in this environment for an extended period of time like WEM have. With the current global challenges facing events, sport, entertainment and business in general, I can fully appreciate Kevin’s decision to step down from promoting the MX Nationals series and hope that we as an industry can show him and his family the gratitude they deserve for many years of commitment and sacrifice to the sport they love as much as we do. It is an extremely tough gig.

“Kevin and Christine have always been incredibly supportive of my personal career, even long before assisting Ryan and I in our supercross ventures, which I’d like to thank them both for, once again. From commentary to TV hosting at their events, they supported me despite the little experience I had at the time. I know I’m one of many that have benefited from such opportunities over the last couple of decades.

“Since 2015, Kevin and his family have worked hard with us to establish the AUS-X Open in the first place and more recently events in Auckland and our involvement as the series promoter for the Australian Supercross Championship. Kevin completely opened his archives and has been incredibly generous with his knowledge both in events and in life as a promoter in our industry.

“I have leaned on him personally as a councillor of sorts when times have been tough/frustrating and he has mentored both Ryan and I continuously as we continue to chase our dreams and passion for promoting dirt bike events in Australia. He has had our backs when others have not and he has stood by us through amazing success and significant stress of potential failure to the level on few could ever understand.

“He and his family have literally put their own blood sweat and tears into ensuring our events and our businesses are a great success. For this we are eternally grateful. I sincerely hope others will join us in saying a huge thank you to Kevin for 20-plus years at the helm of Australian motocross. We look forward to a continued relationship moving forward with regards to the Australian Supercross Championship and have no doubt that with his input and side-by-side, we can achieve great things together in the future.”

Plans are still in the works for AUS Supercross to be staged later this year, however, it remains uncertain if the annual AUS-X Open Melbourne or S-X Open Auckland events will be able to take place, pending international travel and ongoing government restrictions that are currently in place.

Fong breaks Yamaha stranglehold on MotoAmerica

2020 MotoAmerica
Round Two – Road America

2020 MotoAmerica Round Two – Road America – Image by Brian J Nelson

Cameron Beaubier continued to dominate the MotoAmerica Superbike field aboard his Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha Racing R1 with another stellar victory in race one at Road America 2 on Saturday. In that first race Beaubier rocketed down the straight to take the holeshot and never looked back. He crossed the line over six-seconds ahead of the competition to take his ninth-career victory at the 6.5-kilometre Road America Circuit and his third on the trot this season.

Beaubier dominated on Saturday

Beaubier looked set to repeat that come Sunday but instead Suzuki’s Bobby Fong won the first HONOS Superbike race of his career. The Californian took full advantage of a mistake by Cameron Beaubier to become the 59th rider in history to win an AMA Superbike National.

Fong was in second, a few seconds adrift of Beaubier, when the previously unbeaten Beaubier hit a bump in turn one, lost the front end and crashed. Fong took over at the front but soon had Beaubier’s Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha team-mate Jake Gagne nipping at his heels.

For whichever one of those two who won, it would be a career first, and both of them rode like it. Fong, however, was able to withstand the pressure in the closing laps and led Gagne across the finish line by .509 of a second and put his M4 Ecstar Suzuki on top of the podium.

I saw Cameron (Beaubier) go down and I knew immediately that there was going to be pressure on me,” Fong said. “I knew that (Jake) Gagne had extra motivation, near a race win. I didn’t know who was behind me. I just saw plus one on my board, and then I was looking at the big screen down the straightaway to see who it was. Just depending on who it was, I knew how aggressive they were and how defensive I needed to ride. I knew it was Gagne and he rides pretty well. He takes risks, takes risks to get that win. I just tried to keep a steady pace in the middle of the race and not push too hard and at least not try to put it all out there in the middle of the race. I knew he was going to be there at the end of the race. I just put the hammer down. Thankfully we got the win, but we have some work to do to actually beat Cameron. But we’re making big steps and I’m proud of the work we did this weekend.”

Gagne finished second, as he continues his solid start to the season that was briefly interrupted by a problem with his brakes that limited him to a sixth-place finish on Saturday at Road America.

Yeah. No doubt,” Gagne said when asked if he saw an opportunity to win an HONOS Superbike race when he saw Beaubier crash. “That’s definitely what we were thinking. It was a bummer to see Cameron go down. Obviously, he’s been pushing the pace all year long. It just shows how well these things are doing. Hats off to Bobby (Fong). He really rode his heart out. I could tell. I was seeing those tyres and it was greasy out there. It was tough out there. I feel like I’m happy to bring it home in second. Obviously, we know we were fighting for a win, so that’s extra motivation to get it up there. It was a fun race. There were some sections, the first section and last section, where I could close in and then there was some sections in the middle where Bobby really pulled away. So, we were kind of teeter-tottering and that makes it real tough to even try to find a place to stick it in. Bobby is really strong on the brakes in some of the sections where I wanted to make passes. I’m happy. We brought it home. Like Bobby said, it was a slick, greasy race out there. So hats off to the team, Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha. These guys are working really hard. Obviously, we still got to go catch Cam when we get to Road Atlanta. See if we can do some work on him. But it’s been fun battling these guys. It was a good race.”

Superbike Race Two Results
Bobby Fong (Suzuki)
Jake Gagne (Yamaha) +0.509s
Kyle Wyman (Ducati) +10.348s

KATO Fastening/KWR Ducati’s Kyle Wyman waited 1022 days between podiums, ending his drought in Saturday’s HONOS Superbike race. Then he only waited a day to do it all gain, the New Yorker getting his second podium in a row after holding off the ever-persistent Mathew Scholtz on the Westby Racing Yamaha.

It feels great,” Wyman said. “I saw Cam go down and inherited… Actually, I don’t even know if I was in third at that point. I had to pass Toni (Elias) into Canada Corner I think on lap three or so. He was really strong in the first few laps. I think our only weakness really at this point, I think the middle of the race these guys, every time they tipped into turn eight was the same time every lap from lap four to lap eight or nine, so we need to get our first laps’ pace down and try to get closer there. Mathew (Scholtz) put on a really good fight. He was plus .6 for four laps in a row, and then plus .9 for the last three laps. It was tough to just stay focused and not make any mistakes. But Ducati’s on the podium.”

Scholtz, meanwhile, had an eventful race and was in a battle with Wyman and M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Toni Elias when he clashed with Elias in the chicane, causing the luckless Spaniard to crash. Elias was able to remount to finish seventh.

Fifth place went to Scheibe BMW’s Josh Herrin, the Georgian some three seconds ahead of FLY Racing ADR Motorsports’ David Anthony, the Australian continuing his consistent start to the season. With Elias seventh, Altus Motorsports’ Cameron Petersen raced to eighth, well clear of RideHVMC’s Corey Alexander. Thrashed Bike Racing LLC’s Max Flinders rounded out the top 10.

Beaubier now leads the championship by just nine points over Gagne, 75-66, with Fong jumping up to third with 58 points, just two points ahead of Wyman’s 56. Herrin rounds out the top five in the series with 46 points.

Dovizioso heads for shoulder surgery after MX accident

Setback for Dovi and Ducati

Overnight social media lit up as these images of Andrea Dovizioso was shared across various platforms.

The 34-year-old was competing in a motocross race near his home in central Italy

Ducati Corse confirmed the injury on social media and Dovi is now being operated on to affix a plate his collarbone in order to stabilise it and speed the recovery process.

After suffering a crash during a motocross race in Faenza,  @andreadovizioso has sustained a left collarbone injury. After consultation with Prof. Porcellini, Dovi has decided to proceed with surgery this evening in Modena to be fit in time for the start of the 2020 @motogp season.”

The MotoGP season is scheduled to commence on July 19 at Jerez with practice and testing earlier that week.

It will be a very intense quick-fire season this year and thus this is one that no rider would want to carry injuries in to as there is no real break for recovery.  The injury however does not seem to be particularly serious and there is little doubt that Dovi will be on the bike come round one.

Dovizioso regularly uses motocross competition as a base for his fitness training regimen.

GoFundMe started for rider’s family

A GoFundMe page has started for the family of Brian Carter, a father of four who died when his motorcycle collided head-on with a Toyota last Friday on the Sunshine Coast.

Queensland Police say Brian, 37, was riding south on the Nambour Connection Rd at Parklands when it collided with the car heading in the opposite direction from the Bruce Highway offramp about 11.30am.

“The rider was taken to Nambour Hospital but was declared deceased shortly afterwards,” police say.

A GoFundMe page for Brian’s family has now been started and already raised more than $11,000.

Brian leaves behind his wife Alana and their four young daughters.

Family, friends and the motorcycle community are asked to go to the GoFundMe page help raise some financial support for this young family in their time of need.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been travelling in the area at the time of the crash or has dash cam vision to come forward.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
