WorldSBK to auction memorabilia for bushfire relief

WSBK supports Australian bushfire relief with charity auction

Ahead of the 2020 season opener at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit next weekend (February 28-March 1), the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship paddock has united to stage a charity auction in aid of the victims of the recent Australian bushfires.

The funds raised will go to BlazeAid, a volunteer-based set-up working alongside rural families and individuals impacted by the fires and floods. Since being founded in 2009, they’ve worked with over 20,000 volunteers in tackling bushfires.

Five-time world superbike champion Jonathan Rea spoke about the WorldSBK Paddock auction today in Melbourne, retelling how he and his Australia wife, Tatia, were tied up in the bushfire catastrophe despite being in the northern hemisphere in January. Their family owns a house just out of Bright, and for three weeks they watched from afar as the fires threatened their home, evacuations took place, and they saw farms and communities surrounding Bright ravaged.

The WorldSBK auction is organised through CharityStars and will see an incredible selection of rider and team merchandise and memorabilia – as well as some awesome fan experiences – go under the hammer. The Championship, riders and teams have come together during the recent tests at Jerez and Portimao to source their own gear, with exclusive helmets, leathers, gloves and various other ‘money-can’t-buy’ team apparel clothing set to get auctioned.

Newcomer Scott Redding (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati) is one headliner as he offers up his leathers from testing, and they join the likes of teammate Chaz Davies’ helmet and Toprak Razgatlioglu’s (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) gloves and visor.

Reigning Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) has also donated gloves and boots, with multiple race winner Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team) putting in some knee sliders, a visor and boots. BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team’s mudguard hand-signed by Tom Sykes and teammate Eugene Laverty is another highlight.

There are also some experiences up for grabs as Dorna WSBK Organization offers exclusive pit lounge passes and behind the scenes experiences, perfect for every WorldSBK fan who wants to get up close and personal with the world’s fastest production-based motorcycle racing Championship.

They include two pairs of WorldSBK Pit Lounge Passes to any 2020 round (winning bidder’s choice) and one pair of WorldSBK Behind the Scenes Experience passes, giving the winning bidder a money-can’t-buy weekend from starting grid access to a lap in the Safety Car and plenty more in between.

The auction begins on 17th February at 11am CET (Central European Time) and ends on 3rd March midnight, so get bidding to secure your piece of WorldSBK history – and lend a helping hand to the host country of the 2020 season opener.

Australia has, is and will continue to be close to the World Superbike paddock, with Phillip Island hosting timeless classics – as well as the closest ever WorldSBK finish 10 years ago. Some of the biggest names in the history of the sport including Troy Corser and Troy Bayliss also hail from Down Under, making it a cause close to the heart of the paddock.

Gresini Racing launch 2020 campaign

Alongside the aforementioned Ferrari and Rodrigo, there will be Alessandro Zaccone for Team Trentino Gresini MotoE and Jeremy Alcoba for the Kömmerling Gresini Moto3 outfit: two raw diamonds that Fausto Gresini selected from the CIV and FIM CEV Repsol series – and strongly wanted on board. The 21-year-old Italian, Zaccone, will make his World Championship debut this year, however, for the Catalan, Alcoba, this is true only partly true after he earned his full-time spot after last year performing well as a substitute rider for Rodrigo in Austria and Great Britain.

Footpath parking fate heard tonight

The fate of footpath parking in some areas of Melbourne’s CBD will be considered tonight (18 February 2020) at a meeting where council will also be asked to regulate rogue delivery scooter parking.

Riders have been encourage to attend the Future Melbourne Committee meeting at 5.30pm on the Council Meeting Room, Level 2, Town Hall Administration Building, to hear council’s plan to remove footpath parking from some areas and add 151 free on-street parking bays, replacing 36 car bays. It is also being live streamed here. Click here to make a submission by 10am today.

Click here to read more about the plan to free up more footpath space for pedestrians and the expansion of cafes.

Transport Portfolio Chair Councillor Nicolas Frances-Gilley said Victoria is the only state in Australia that allows motorcycles to park on footpaths under the road rules.

Melbourne Council draft transport motorcycle parking conspiracy theory transport spokesman Cr Frances GilleyCr Frances Gilley and his Trans Alp

Currently around 1200 motorcycles park on footpaths in the central city per day and there are 245 existing motorcycle parking spaces.

Fate rejected

The move was initially supported by the Victorian Motorcycle Council which has now withdrawn that support and issued this statement:

Whilst we support the intent of managing footpath congestion in the face of increasing pedestrian numbers, the proposal has several critical flaws and significant concerns in its current form. It is also significantly different to the proposal that was reviewed and endorsed at the November 2019 Motorcycles in the City of Melbourne Committee meeting which in essence was a 1:1 displaced bike to on-road parking proposal. The committee was not informed of the changes and had no opportunity to review them. In engineering circles, this is called an ‘uncontrolled change’.

Our deliberations with CoM identified that critical changes were introduced following a stakeholder group’s instigated footpath walking inspection with CoM engineers. From this meeting, CoM were under the impression that more bikes on average would be able to be parked in a standard car space if those car spaces were not marked and painted with Australian Standard angled motorcycle parking bays. The assumption saw CoM factor in on-street parking for 151 bikes across 36 car spaces, whereas approximately 126 (a ratio of 3.5 bikes per car space as originally proposed) was more likely. This dropped the nearly 1:1 replacement ratio to 1 : 0.72 and exacerbated the misalignment between the location of proposed restrictions and the potential location of the 36 car spaces.

At an average of 3.5 bikes per car spaces, CoM needs to review the impact of the additional car spaces that would be needed to meet the originally endorsed proposal. And also factor in the impact of future bike use growth.

It has also been rejected by the Victorian Motorcycle Riders Association who believe it could be the first step toward a total ban on footpath parking.

Scooters crowding foopathsubereats scooter bag fate

Emeritus professor of transport Marcus Wigan says he will make a formal submission tonight to ban commercial motorcycles and scooters from footpath parking, leaving space for legitimate commuter parking.

He says the rapid growth of commercial food delivery scooters and some small motorcycles has not been addressed in the council’s paper.

“These take up a great deal of space in the areas that they congregate, and are in general less likely to respect the other users of the footpath due to inexperience and commercial time pressures,” his submission says.

“It is also likely that they are unaware of the footpath parking guidelines that have been so successful over the years.”

Prof Wigan suggests that commercial use of the footpath be regulated, including the parking of commercial vehicles such as delivery scooters.

He says this would not only regulate parking, but also improve the “briefing and management of the riders”.

“Road space, kerb space and footpath space are all under pressure, and space allocation and usage are all increasingly important,” says Prof Wigan who is selling his 2017 Indian Scout for a Yamaha MT-01. (Click here if you would like more info on his Scout!)

It’s a real team effort with Dale and Julie also. We are extremely privileged to have some great partners from out of industry as well as within the motorcycle industry for this season and I can’t wait for the first round to get underway.”

Tomac wins in Florida to take series lead

450 SX

Eli Tomac arrived on the east coast having trimmed Ken Roczen’s championship lead to only a single point. Defending champion Cooper Webb had also recently come in to some better form and was victorious last week in San Diego to land in Florida only nine-points adrift of Roczen.

Tomac and Malcolm Stewart both started the opening heat race strongly but it was the Kawasaki man that was quickest on the opening lap to fend off Stewart and streak away to a dominant win.

Starts have been Tomac’s achilles heel all season but he was very quick out of the blocks in that heat race and apart from one significant moment in the whoops was untroubled on his way to victory. Cooper Webb was third in the first heat ahead of Justin Brayton and Dean Wilson. Chad Reed was 12th and would have to go to the LCQ to earn his spot in the Main.

Adam Cianciarulo

Adam Cianciarulo scored the holeshot in the second 450 Heat and had clear air while two incidents on the opening lap caused dramas for many of his opposition. Blake Baggett losing a lot of ground in one of those incidents which meant the #4 KTM had to ride hard in order to fight his way back up the field to earn his transfer spot to the main.

Ken Roczen managed to get within striking distance of Cianciarulo a couple of times and finally managed to sneak past the Kawasaki man after he made a mistake in the sand. Lapped traffic saw Roczen held up a little late in that heat and allowed Cianciarulo to almost steal the win on the run to the flag but the Honda man held on to take victory.

Zach Osborne rounded out the top three ahead of Broc Tickle, the Suzuki rider making his return to competition after serving a two-year suspension for testing positive to stimulants.

Vince Friese scored the holeshot in the Main ahead of Adam Cianciarulo, Eli Tomac and Malcolm Stewart, while Ken Roczen was languishing outside the top ten as the 22-rider field negotiated the first turns of the layout inside the Raymond James Stadium.

Cianciarulo was quickly through to the lead

Cianciarulo was into the lead before turn two and streaking away from Friese. Eli Tomac was the next rider to pass Friese, quickly followed by Malcolm Stewart pushing Friese further back to fourth ahead of Cooper Webb and Ken Roczen. That pair also made short work of Friese.

Eli Tomac steadily pulled back tenth here and there to close on his team-mate before making his move with just over 11-minutes remaining in the Main. It initially looked as though Cianciarulo would have enough speed to stay with and shadow Tomac but it didn’t turn out that way as his more experienced teammate pulled away to a clear lead.

Cooper Webb and Malcolm Stewart tussled hard over third place in the middle stages of the race race but eventually it was the KTM man that got the better of that battle. Ken Roczen momentarily also sneaked past Stewart but then went down after losing the front and had to watch Stewart blow by him.

Cianciarulo went down after getting crossed-up in the whoops while in a strong second place to really upset the race. Adam was hung up on tough blocks and by the time he get going again he had been relegated all the way back to tenth place.

With five-minutes remaining on the shot clock Tomac had a 13-second lead over Webb while Ken Roczen had managed to move up to third place after getting past Stewart.

Justin Hill then also pushed past Stewart to move the #27 Honda back to sixth place where he immediately came under further attack by Dean Wilson, Justin Brayton and the recovering Adam Cianciarulo.

Eli Tomac backed the pace off in the closing laps and cruised to his third victory of the season. Cooper Webb was a clear second place, well ahead of Ken Roczen.

Justin Barcia got fourth by a nose over Justin Hill at the flag. Dean Wilson was sixth ahead of Malcolm Stewart who just managed to stave off the advances of a closing Adam Cianciarulo who salvaged eighth place.

Justin Brayton scored ninth while Jason Anderson rounded out the top ten after being penalised two positions for gaining a track advantage.

Chad Reed, the only Australian in the SX field across both classes on the east coast, won the LCQ before finishing 19th in the Main.

Yamaha Racing Team to debut updated 2020 R1 at Phillip Island

Halliday confident the updated package will be beneficial for round one.

Yamaha Racing Team will debut the updated 2020 R1 at Phillip Island’s opening round of the Mi-Bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) after an initial test last week at Wakefield Park yielded positive results according to Cru Halliday.

The 2018 Supersport champion rolled out the revised Superbike contender in ASBK trim alongside teammate Aiden Wagner at the New South Wales venue, where they evaluated if the package was at an adequate level to start the championship.

Halliday admits he adapted quickly to the bike, and believes the boost in power thanks to an upgraded engine and electronics package will be beneficial for the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.

“We will be starting the year on the 2020 R1,” Halliday confirmed to CycleOnline.com.au. “A bit more power down the first straight will definitely help us [at Phillip Island]. I gelled really quickly with the bike, and I think Aiden did as well. It’s going to be exciting, and the new livery looks good too, so it’s a whole new package and new look.

“The bike was flawless – it felt like I had been riding it all season. It’s a very comfortable bike, and there’s a lot more bottom end in the engine. The electronic throttle is pretty good – it’s a bit strange at first, but once you get used, I actually prefer it now.

“I was just getting my head around the new electronics on the bike, but also in the back of my mind I was thinking I can’t crash it. It was a pretty good day.”

The ASBK opener, which will run in conjunction with the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), will be staged over 28 February-1 March.

French podium reassures Febvre ahead of MXGP assault

French podium reassures Febvre ahead of MXGP assault

Former world champion returns to form at Lacapelle Marival.

Image: Supplied.

A podium result at the Mastercross Lacapelle Marival in France has reassured Romain Febvre as he plots a return to the MXGP World Championship after his 2019 campaign was shortened due to injury.

The Frenchman, who’s made the high-profile move to Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing for 2020, broke his femur at the Uddevalla grand prix in August last year.

Febvre made his Kawasaki debut last month in Italy, where he scored 14-11 race results. The former world champion has gone onto make significant improvements at the French pre-season event, recording a 6-2 scorecard for third overall, finishing behind Jeremy Seewer (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) and Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

“It’s a great feeling to have such a strong day with good starts, good lap time and podium results,” said Febvre. “We have worked a lot with Jacky [Vimond] and I have made a lot of progress since Riola three weeks ago.

“I love my KX450-SR and we saw today that I got good starts even if this one here is really short to the first turn. I can say that tonight I am reassured – now we’ll go back home and practice on several different tracks to be ready for Matterley Basin.”

The opening round of the MXGP World Championship is scheduled for 1 March at Matterley Basin in Great Britain.

Lacapelle Marival runner-up a timely boost for Beaton

Lacapelle Marival runner-up a timely boost for Beaton

Factory Husqvarna rider performs strongly at pre-season event in France.

Image: Supplied.

A runner-up result at the Mastercross Lacapelle Marival event in France has offered Jed Beaton a timely boost of confidence ahead of the 2020 MX2 World Championship.

The Tasmanian rode strongly throughout the French pre-season race, going onto record a 3-2 scorecard for second overall behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle.

The podium has put the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing entry in a positive frame of mind for Great Britain’s season-opener in two weeks’ time, the Australian bouncing back from an injury-riddled 2019.

“I’m pretty pleased with the way today went,” Beaton commented. “It’s really nice to get to race a pre-season event that’s not super wet and is in good condition and has good grip. The two motos went well enough for me. In the first race I didn’t get the best of starts, I think I was down in fifth or sixth before getting up to third.

“I stayed there for quite a few laps, before the top two guys got into the lappers. It got pretty intense there for a while and I was able to close up a lot. Third was a good result. I took a little while to get into a rhythm in the second race although I was in second for most of the time.

“I felt like I rode a lot better in the second half and to finish second overall is positive ahead of the first GP in a couple of weeks.”

Fellow Australians and Team Honda 114 Motorsports teammates Nathan Crawford and Bailey Malkiewicz were fifth and 29th respectively in the MX2 category.
