Teenage standout Jett Lawrence in line for S-X Open start

MEC Futures winner in discussions to line up in Auckland and Melbourne.

High-profile Australian teenage export Jett Lawrence could make a surprise return home for next month’s S-X Open Supercross FIM Oceania Championship in SX2, the possibility of it happening gaining momentum by the day.

Lawrence, 16, starred at the weekend’s Monster Energy Cup (MEC) by dominating the Futures category aboard his Factory Connection Honda CRF250R and his doughnut-eating tactics on the podium set social media alight afterwards.

It’s understood that discussions between Lawrence’s management in the US are ongoing with S-X Open organisers, as well as Honda Australia’s factory team, Penrite Honda Racing – all three associated parties fuelling speculation on social media this week. If a path to move forward on the plan is established, he would contest the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne.

For the younger Lawrence sibling, a start in Auckland and Melbourne could mark the beginning of his full-time professional career, with a decision looming on whether or not he will contest the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship in one of the 250SX regions with Geico Honda.

“Probably…” Lawrence indicated when questioned post-race at the MEC on whether he will race supercross next year. “We’ll see how my off-season goes and, if it goes well, then yeah, you’ll probably be seeing me at either the first round of East or West.”

Lawrence has been recognised as one of Australia’s brightest young talents for much of this decade alongside now 20-year-old brother Hunter, clinching the 2014 65cc World Championship and transitioning to Europe with his family in 2016.

The Queenslander has gone on to deliver strong results across a variety of championships since, including EMX in Europe and the US amateur circuit after moving to California for 2019. He also entered this year’s final three Pro Motocross rounds, picking up a best moto result of P8 at Unadilla.

After signing a long-term deal with Geico Honda that commenced this year, guest appearances at home would likely see Lawrence join the all-star roster at Penrite Honda Racing in one form or another, which is currently filled with American trio Justin Brayton, Mitchell Oldenburg and Chris Blose alongside South Australian mainstay Brett Metcalfe.

The arrival of Lawrence in the S-X Open series – which double as the final rounds of the Australian Supercross Championship – would be a welcome addition since Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Dean Wilson was injured at the MEC on the weekend. He confirmed earlier today that he’s officially been ruled out of both events.

Binder promoted to Red Bull KTM for MotoGP rookie season

Lecuona earns MotoGP seat with Red Bull KTM Tech3.

Brad Binder has been promoted to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing for his rookie season in the 2020 MotoGP World Championship, while his initial spot at Red Bull KTM Tech3 will be taken up by Spaniard Iker Lecuona.

The team shuffle comes after Johann Zarco departed the squad not even one full season into a two-year deal, prompting the Austrian manufacturer to cement its future with two premier class rookies.

Binder’s impressive progress through the Moto3 and Moto2 divisions meant the 24-year old was well on the road to a premier class saddle for 2020, but with a slot opening in the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, Binder has been placed next to Pol Espargaro for his first term.

Lecuona, who has taken Moto2 podium honours in both 2018 and 2019, had been signed for a Moto2 ride in 2020. The 19-year old has now been promoted to the Red Bull KTM Tech3 MotoGP effort alongside Miguel Oliveira.

“It was clear that our plans for 2020 needed to change following our mid-season announcement,” said KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer. “After some thought and talks we decided to move in this direction and let the young, hungry guys with good experience in the other categories of MotoGP show us what they can do.

“Brad is a rider that has made his way through the KTM structure and we have no doubt whatsoever that he can walk into the Red Bull KTM team and keep showing that same style and never-give-up attitude we have seen for a long time.

“Iker comes into the Red Bull KTM Tech3 team and we’re super-confident that Hervé and his guys will be able to help and develop another rookie like they have done so well with Miguel this year. We know we are making good and exciting steps with our MotoGP project and with next season now fixed we can really start building up to this new chapter.”

The current MotoGP season resumes this weekend at Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Barbagallo Raceway in Perth has been named as the venue that the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) will feature at alongside the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in 2020.

The Pirtek Perth SuperNight, scheduled for 15-17 May 2020, will offer up a day/night schedule, while marking the return of ASBK in Western Australia following a four-year hiatus.

It was revealed in August that the ASBK would support the Supercars program at a then to be determined venue, the two championships running alongside each other most previously in 2013.

“Combining two championship events such as Supercars and ASBK is an exciting endeavour and requires a great deal of coordination,” said Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle.

“I’d like to thank all those who helped bring it together and I’m really looking forward to seeing all the action in WA next year.

“The Barbagallo Wanneroo circuit has always been well-attended for both two and four-wheeled motorsport events, Western Australia is a highly important region for Motorcycling Australia, the motorcycle industry and ASBK partners, so it’s great to bring the nation’s fastest riders back to WA in front of a big and enthusiastic audience of race fans.”

Supercars CEO Sean Seamer added: “It’s great to be doing an event with the ASBK championship. We look forward to working with them in Perth to put on an amazing show for fans of both two and four-wheels.”

Further details on the event are expected to be released in the early stages of 2020.

Wilson MEC injury casts uncertainty over S-X Open appearances

Factory Husqvarna rider suffers dislocated hip in Las Vegas.

A hip injury sustained during qualifying at the Monster Energy Cup over the weekend has cast uncertainty over Dean Wilson’s attendance at the Auckland and Melbourne stops of the 2019 S-X Open International FIM Oceania Supercross Championship next month.

The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team released a statement yesterday, indicating the popular contender suffered a dislocated hip in the frightening fall.

The extent of the injury and subsequent recovery time is yet to be determined, however early reports suggest Wilson could be on the sidelines for an extended period of time.

It potentially rules him out of the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland and AUS-X Open Melbourne rounds, scheduled for 16 November and 30 November respectively.

Both of the prestigious supercross races currently boast an incredible international line-up consisting of Chad Reed (Honda), Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing), Joey Savatgy, and three-time Australian supercross champion Justin Brayton (Penrite Honda Racing).

Ricky Carmichael will also be on-hand at both stops, while New Zealand great and former world champion Ben Townley will be in attendance at the Auckland round.

Title hopes in doubt for Hayes after round two concussion

Former points leader scores DNF in SX1 main event.

Former SX2 points leader Jacob Hayes has had his title hopes thrown into doubt after a concussion in the opening laps of Port Adelaide’s main event saw him forced to prematurely exit round two of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship.

The Serco Yamaha contender was tipped as the favourite to win in South Australia, as the then red-plate holder boasted exceptional speed throughout every session, including topping Superpole.

The American import suffered a poor start and was forced to make a number of quick passes in the main, however while attempting to cut under Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) and Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing), he came up short as he tripled into the third rhythm lane, causing him to crash heavily.

“Aaron [Tanti] made a move on Jay Wilson, and Jacob squared the corner off and thought he could still make the triple in,” team owner Gavin Eales explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “He didn’t make it- he didn’t get the front wheel across and knocked himself out, but he’s all good. He’s very sore, but he’s fine.”

Hayes now sits seventh in the championship standings, 17 points behind newly-appointed leader Tanti as just three rounds remain. The next stop on the calendar is scheduled for 9 November at Wollongong in New South Wales.

Suspected pelvic injury for the DPH Motorsport Husqvarna rider.

Dual Pirelli MX Nationals MX2 champion Wilson Todd was transported to hospital last night after suffering a heavy fall in the SX2 main event at Port Adelaide’s second round of the Australian Supercross Championship.

The DPH Motorsport Husqvarna rider, who was already battling with a rib injury that reaggravated at Brisbane’s opener, crashed heavily at the end of a rhythm section moments after relinquishing the lead during the initial laps of the encounter.

The Queenslander is suspected to have suffered an injury to his pelvis, prompting him to be hospitalised for further medical evaluation.

“From what they told us – he’s with Race Safe – but he’s in a bit of pain,” team manager Boyd Hocking told MotoOnline.com.au. “He’s stable and going to Royal Adelaide Hospital to get x-rays on his pelvis. He had a lot of assistance to get off the track, but he’s in a lot of pain. We don’t know too much more at the moment.”

Todd had shown great form throughout the night, qualifying sixth before finishing third in his heat race. The 21-year-old indicated in August that he has signed a deal to contest the 2020 MX2 World Championship.

Defending SX1 champion Brayton soars to Port Adelaide win

Image: Foremost Media.

Triple Australian supercross champion Justin Brayton delivered another commanding ride for Penrite Honda Racing to win the SX1 main event at Port Adelaide tonight.

Brayton worked his way into the lead on the opening lap and sprinted ahead from there in what was the only traditional format final of the 2019 season.

In the end the American lit the candles with a 9.757s advantage from Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy), who managed to turn the tables on teammate Dan Reardon in South Australia. Local Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing) rode to fourth position.

SX1 newcomer Richie Evans (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) showed he belongs in the class by recording fifth place, ahead of Honda-mounted privateer Joel Wightman in a solid P6.

Next best was Jesse Dobson (Husqvarna), while national champion Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) made a late move on Jackson Richardson (Rockstar Energy Honda), as Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki) completed the top 10.

In the championship standings following two of five rounds, Brayton now leads by eight points over Clout and Reardon, with the series set to continue at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium in New South Wales on Saturday, 9 November.

Oldenburg rises for first SX2 victory in South Australia

Opening round winner Hayes and outdoor champion Todd crash out of final.

Penrite Honda Racing’s Mitchell Oldenburg has won round two of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship in SX2, delivering a dominant performance at Port Adelaide in South Australia.

Oldenburg scored his first win on Australian soil by a commanding 6.555s over fellow American import Josh Osby (Raceline KTM Thor).

Fast-finishing Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) almost made it consecutive runner-up results, however an error on the final lap allowed Osby back through for position. Defending champion Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) and Chris Blose (Penrite Honda Racing) filled the top five.

Supercross rookie Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor) impressed with sixth place, followed by lead privateer Connor Tierney (Yamaha), Tomas Ravenhorst (KTM), Bradley Taft (Empire Kawasaki) and Dylan Wills (Davey Motorsports KTM).

Major news in the SX2 main was the exit of early leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) and opening round winner Jacob Hayes (Serco Yamaha) – separately going down in the same rhythm lane on lap three.

As a result, it’s now Tanti who leads the championship following two of five rounds, two points ahead of Osby and a further two ahead of tonight’s winner Oldenburg. Previous leader Hayes has now dropped down the order to seventh.
